Education department explores grace period for intermediate exam entry following tragic incident


Hyderabad: The Education department is contemplating on allowing intermediate students late up to five minutes, into exam centres.

However, it could be case by case on a genuine issue only. The move comes after the TS BIE’s one-late rule claimed the life of a student in Adilabad on Thursday.


The intermediate second year student, Shiva Kumar, died allegedly by jumping into an irrigation project, after he was refused entry into the examination hall citing the one minute late rule.

On Friday, Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumar held a meeting on exams with Principal Secretary to Government (Education) Burra Venkatesham, Collectors and SPs other Education department officials at Secretariat here.

The Intermediate Examinations that began on February 28 is being conducted from 9 am to 12 noon. Students are allowed into the centre one-hour prior to the examination and they are instructed to occupy their seats by 8.45 am.

However, a grace period of 15 minutes from 8.45 am to 9 am is extended for students, who are strictly not allowed after 9 am. A total of 22,394 intermediate first year students missed the English paper-I examination on Friday.

Out of 5,00,936 students who registered 4,80,542 appeared for the examination during which four malpractice cases with three in Karimnagar and one Nizamabad were booked. Meanwhile, the TS BIE will hold spot evaluation camps for the IPE in four phases commencing March 4.
