Hamas: Israel’s ‘extermination zones’ war crime, violation of all laws

This file photo shows the moment when an Israeli missile fired from a drone killed four young unarmed Palestinian men in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, in early January.

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has strongly condemned imposition of so-called extermination or kill zones by Israeli army across the Gaza Strip, describing it as a war crime.

The announcement by Hamas came after some Israeli media outlets reported that the regime has designated certain areas of Gaza as extermination zones where Israeli forces are authorized to shoot and kill any Palestinian, even if they are not armed.

Based to these reports, the boundaries of such extermination areas are not determined in advance, but according to the conditions on the ground and the distance of people from the building where Israeli forces are staying. In general, the limits of the kill zones and the exact procedure regarding the operation in them are subject to the interpretation of the commanders of that combat unit.

“As soon as people, especially adult men, enter the extermination area … the order is to shoot, even to kill, even if the suspect is not armed,” an Israeli reserve officer was quoted as saying.

“What has been revealed by the Zionist media today, that the criminal occupation army has established ‘extermination zones’ along the Gaza Strip, where anyone who moves there is killed without any discrimination, is a brutal war crime,” Hamas said in its statement.

The movement added that the move is also “a violation of all customs and laws of war by targeting unarmed civilians in ongoing incidents, some of which were revealed in video clips previously broadcast…”

“We call on the United Nations and international judicial institutions, led by the International Criminal Court, to begin an immediate investigation into these heinous crimes and other scandalous violations that occur in sound and sight in front of the entire world,” Hamas noted.

It stressed that the goal of such investigation must be “to prosecute the leaders of the Nazi occupation [regime], to … stop the ongoing massacre [of Palestinians] and the genocidal war that is being waged against defenseless civilians [in Gaza], and protect human values trampled by the occupation [regime] with the support and a green light from the administration of [US] President [Joe] Biden.”

Punjab Congress Should Clear Stand On Arvind Kejriwal: Akali Dal MP

Punjab Congress Should Clear Stand On Arvind Kejriwal: Akali Dal MP

“The people of Punjab are ready to give them a befitting reply this time,” she said.

Bathinda:

Hitting out at the ruling AAP in the state and its INDIA partner Congress over the ‘friendly fight’ in the state in the Lok Sabha elections, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Sunday said the grand old party should come clean on whether it was standing with the people of Punjab or supporting the ‘corrupt’ Arvind Kejriwal.

Speaking to ANI on Sunday, SAD MP said, “I call on the Punjab Congress to clear its stand. They should clarify whether they were standing with the people of Punjab or supporting a corrupt (Delhi chief minister and AAP national convenor) Kejriwal.”

Scoffing at the Maha Rally of the AAP and its partners in the INDIA bloc at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, Kaur said all leaders in the Opposition alliance gathered to pledge support to a leader, who dodged repeated summons by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in connection with the excise policy case before being arrested.

“Despite repeated summons, Arvind Kejriwal did not appear before the ED. The court has refused to grant him bail. His ministers (Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain) have been languishing in jail over the last one-and-a-half years. They indulged in a similar liquor scam in Punjab as well,” Kaur added.

Despite the AAP and the Congress failing to clinch a seat-sharing deal for the Lok Sabha polls in Punjab, she claimed that the two parties are together in the state and the people are being ‘misled’ for the sake of votes.

“The people of Punjab are ready to give them a befitting reply this time,” the SAD lawmaker said.

Also hitting out at the BJP over accepting deserters from rival camps, especially the grand old party, she called them the “new Congress”.

“The BJP is the new Congress. Leaders, who were with the Congress till the other day, switched over to the BJP and tickets to contest the Lok Sabha elections. The SAD, on the other hand, are not raiding rival camps and will fight the polls on its ideology and farmers’ interests,” she added.

Earlier in the day, INDIA leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, NC patriarch Farooq Abdullah, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, and Jharkhand CM Champai Soren, among others, headlined the mega show of strength for the embattled Kejriwal at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 and is currently in the custody of the central agency till April 1.

Benjamin Netanyahu Undergoes "Successful" Hernia Surgery: Israel PM Office

Benjamin Netanyahu Undergoes 'Successful' Hernia Surgery: Israel PM Office

Doctors discovered the hernia on Saturday during a routine checkup

Jerusalem:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent “successful” hernia surgery, his office said on Monday.

Netanyahu was “in good shape and beginning to recover”, his office said in a statement after the operation on Sunday evening, which was closely watched as the war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip nears six months.

Doctors discovered the hernia on Saturday during a routine checkup, and after consultations the decision was made for the premier to undergo surgery after completing his daily schedule, his office said.

Thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Jerusalem on Sunday evening to call for Netanyahu’s resignation and the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

The war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7 that resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has so far killed at least 32,782 people, mostly women and children, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said Sunday.

Tiny Lanka Island Takes Centre Stage In Tamil Nadu Politics Ahead Of Polls

Katchatheevu: Tiny Lanka Island Takes Centre Stage In Tamil Nadu Politics Ahead Of Polls

New Delhi:

A tiny island between India and Sri Lanka on Palk Straight has become the hot button issue ahead of the general election in Tamil Nadu, where the BJP is trying to find a toehold. The island of Katchatheevu, a disputed area, was given to Sri Lanka by the Congress government headed by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi through an agreement in 1974. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now posted a message on social media saying the Congress has “callously” given it away.

“Eye-opening and startling! New facts reveal how Congress callously gave away Katchatheevu. This has angered every Indian and reaffirmed in people’s minds – we can’t ever trust Congress,” PM Modi posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Weakening India’s unity, integrity and interests has been Congress’ way of working for 75 years and counting,” he added, posting a report by Times of India that is based on based on an RTI reply Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai.

He later raised the matter at a rally in Meerut meant to flag off the BJP campaign in Uttar Pradesh and linked it to the capture of Tamil fishermen and the seizure of their boats by the Lankan forces.

Mr Annamalai’s RTI had sought details on the decision of the Indira Gandhi government to hand over the island, which has always been a grouse in Tamil Nadu. With the Congress being an ally of the state’s ruling DMK, the BJP is hoping to gain political traction in the state dominated by Dravidian politics.

The Controversy

Katchatheevu — around 33 km from the Indian coast near Rameswaram — has been a disputed territory between India and Sri Lanka since the British period. Back then both nations were British colonies. The British, citing the traditional claims of the Ramnad zamindari of Ramanathapuram, had attached it to the Madras Presidency.

But dispute broke out again after Independence over fishing rights around the island.

To settle the discord and strengthen ties with Sri Lanka, the government headed by Indira Gandhi had agreed to cede it to island nation under the 1974 “Indo-Sri Lankan Maritime agreement”.

At the time, the uninhabited volcanic island — 1.6 km in length and around 300 m wide — was thought to have little strategic value. But over the last decades, the situation has changed owing to the rise of China and its growing influence over Sri Lanka.

Why Katchatheevu Is Important For Tamil Nadu

Indian fishermen who go into the area and face action from the Lankan authorities are mostly from Tamil Nadu.

The DMK, which ruled Tamil Nadu in 1974, claimed the Congress government had not factored in its views before signing the agreement with Sri Lanka. At the time, the party had held multiple protests.

The government headed by J Jayalalithaa had routinely flagged the issue and had even gone to court over it.

Last year, ahead of Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s visit to India, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had written to PM Modi, asking the matter be discussed.

He wrote to PM Modi later as well, after multiple fishermen were arrested by the Lankan authorities.

“The traditional fishing waters that Tamil fishermen have relied upon for generations are getting increasingly restricted, making it difficult to sustain their livelihood impacting the economic stability of these communities. This also threatens the cultural and social fabric of the region that revolves around the fishing industry,” read his letter in February this year.

Claiming that the number of arrests is spiralling, he added, “During 2023, the Sri Lankan navy arrested 243 fishermen and seized 37 boats. However, in the past 28 days alone, 88 fishermen and 12 boats were apprehended in six incidents”.

Political Hot Button

Following PM Modi’s comments, the leaders of the BJP and Congress have clashed over Katchatheevu.

Senior DMK leader RS Bharathi said the Prime Minister has “no achievements” to showcase and was only spreading “lies”. If PM Modi was keen on Katchatheevu, he could have reclaimed that island during his 10 years in office. “Why did not he take up the Katchatheevu issue?” Mr Bharathi said.

The argument has been seconded by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. The Katchatheevu island was given to Sri Lanka as part of a friendly agreement in 1974, Mr Kharge added, pointing out that the BJP-led government too had undertaken a similar “friendly gesture” towards Bangladesh on exchange of border enclaves.

The filmmaker wrote: “Rashmika has dubbed for the teaser in all five languages. She pulled off dubbing in Malayalam too! A language she’s not worked in yet. This won’t be the case with the film… but for the teaser all five languages.”

The teaser of the film will be released on Rashmika’s birthday on April 5.

Parag, Burger Have A Huge Role To Play For RR In IPL 2024: Boult

Rajasthan Royals’ seasoned campaigner Trent Boult on Sunday picked Riyan Parag and Nandre Burger as the two players in his side who would have a key role to play in the ongoing IPL season for the 2008 winners. With two consecutive wins in the bag, the Sanju Samson-led side will take on a struggling Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday looking to build on their momentum. With knocks of 43 and 84 not out, Parag has showed his penchant for accumulating runs at a fast clip, signalling a heavy shift from someone who would struggle to harness his talent to one who seems to have come of age.

On the other hand, the young left-arm South African quick Burger has flourished sharing the new ball with Boult, grabbing three wickets so far to make a dent on his IPL debut.

“The first experience I had with him (Parag) was (at) a warm-up game here in the bubble when the IPL was based in Mumbai, a couple of years ago. He got 85 off probably 30 balls and I just thought he was the most amazing player,” Boult recalled while talking to the media ahead of Royals’ training session.

“Obviously, everyone is very happy to see him have some success early in the tournament this year. He’s always been pinned as an exciting player to watch, so of course, it’s always very satisfying to see a guy go out and his game come off,” he said.

“One hundred per cent he’s got a huge role to play for us in this tournament,” Boult added.

Boult praised Burger for showing no struggles while playing a challenging white-ball tournament such as the IPL without much experience.

“Nandre is a guy that I’ve only just met, but bowls with good pace, good skills and comes from South Africa where conditions are very different,” Boult said.

“He’s brought his game in nicely and delivered very nicely for us so far, so another guy who should play a huge role in our tournament,” he added.

Coming off a successful Test series against England wherein he smacked more than 700 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal is yet to make his presence felt in this IPL. But Boult, on his part, was full of praise for his young teammate.

“(He is) a phenomenal player. Obviously (I have) played with him for a couple of years. I don’t want to say last year was his breakout season but he’s had brilliant 15-or-so months,” Boult said.

“The guy is hungry for runs; he’s desperate to get better. You can see it from the way he trains. He takes that game from the nets straight into the middle. There’s no wonder why he is one of India’s up-and-coming talents with the bat. A very exciting future (is) ahead for him,” Boult added.

Boult, however, declined any suggestions that Rajasthan Royals are concerned with the form of opening batter Jos Buttler, who has had his struggle for runs of late.

“Jos Butler is a player whose record speaks for itself. You can’t keep (scoring) runs every day but I know he’s very eager to make a contribution and get his tournament underway. I don’t think we have anything to worry about there,” Boult said.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians’ senior spin bowler Piyush Chawla confirmed that the five-time champions are still waiting to hear from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) over the status of world No 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav.

Suryakumar has been sidelined since January this year as he has been stationed at NCA in Bengaluru while he recovers from injuries to his ankle and groin.

“NCA still has to look after that and coaches know more about it rather than us players,” Chawla replied when asked about Suryakumar’s progress.

Turkey's Opposition Knocks Erdogan In Key Local Elections

Turkey's Opposition Knocks Erdogan In Key Local Elections

Hours after voting ended, the president was headed to Ankara from Istanbul to address the nation.

Turks punished President Tayyip Erdogan and his party on Sunday in nationwide local elections that reasserted the opposition as a political force and reinforced Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as the president’s chief future rival.

With more than half of votes counted, Imamoglu led by nearly 10 percentage points in the mayoral race in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, while his Republican People’s Party (CHP) retained Ankara and gained nine other mayoral seats in big cities nationwide.

Analysts said Erdogan and his AK Party (AKP) – which have ruled Turkey for more than two decades – fared worse than polls predicted due to soaring inflation, dissatisfied Islamist voters and, in Istanbul, Imamoglu’s appeal beyond the CHP’s secular base.

“The favour and trust our citizens have in us have indeed been demonstrated,” said Imamoglu, 53, a former businessman who entered politics in 2008 and is now seen by analsyts as a potential presidential challenger.

In Ankara, the capital, thousands of supporters gathered into the night waving CHP flags for a speech by CHP Mayor Mansur Yavas, who trounced his AKP challenger in another blow for Erdogan.

Erdogan had campaigned hard ahead of the municipal elections, which analysts described as a gauge of both his support and the opposition’s durability. The president’s disappointing showing could signal a change in the major emerging economy’s divided political landscape.

Hours after voting ended, the president was headed to Ankara from Istanbul to address the nation.

According to 79.77% of ballot boxes opened in Istanbul, Europe’s largest city with more than 16 million people, Imamoglu had 50.53% support compared with 40.73% for AKP challenger Murat Kurum, a former minister in Erdogan’s national government.

Polls had predicted a tight contest in Istanbul and possible CHP losses across the country.

Yet partial official results reported by state-run Anadolu Agency showed AKP and its main ally giving up mayoralties in 10 big cities including Bursa and Balikesir in the industrialised northwest.

The CHP is leading nationwide by almost 1% of the votes, a first in 35 years, the results showed.

Mert Arslanalp, assistant professor of political science at Istanbul’s Bogazici University, said it was Erdogan’s “severest election defeat” since coming to national power in 2002.

“Imamoglu demonstrated he could reach across the deep socio-political divisions that define Turkey’s opposition electorate even without their institutional support,” he said. “This makes him the most politically competitive rival to Erdogan’s regime at the national level.”

IMAMOGLU’S RISE

In 2019, Imamoglu had dealt Erdogan a sharp electoral blow when he first won Istanbul, ending 25 years of rule in the city by AKP and its Islamist predecessors, including Erdogan’s own run as its mayor in the 1990s. CHP also won Ankara that year.

The president struck back in 2023 by securing re-election and a parliamentary majority with his nationalist allies, despite a years-long cost-of-living crisis.

Analysts said the economic strains, including nearly 70% inflation and a slowdown in growth brought on by an aggressive monetary-tightening regime, moved voters to punish AKP this time.

“The economy was the decisive factor,” said Hakan Akbas, a senior adviser at the Albright Stonebridge Group. “Turkish people demanded change and Imamoglu is now the default nemesis to President Erdogan.”

Flag-waving supporters in front of the Istanbul Municipality building said they wanted to see Imamoglu challenge Erdogan for the presidency in the future.

“We are very happy. I love him so much. We would like to see him as president,” said Esra, a housewife.

Rising popular support for the Islamist New Welfare Party, which took an even more hardline stance than Erdogan against Israel over the Gaza conflict, also sapped AKP support. The party took Sanliurfa from an AKP incumbant in the southeast.

Imamoglu was reelected despite the collapse of the opposition alliance that failed to topple Erdogan last year.

The main pro-Kurdish party, which backed Imamoglu in 2019, fielded its own candidate under the DEM banner in Istanbul this time. But many Kurds put aside party loyalty and voted for him again, the results suggest.

In the mainly Kurdish southeast, DEM reaffirmed its strength, winning 10 provinces. Following previous elections, the state has replaced pro-Kurdish mayors with state-appointed “trustees” following previous elections over alleged militant ties.

Violence erupted earlier in the day, including one incident in the southeast in clashes by groups armed with guns, sticks and stones, killing one and wounding 11. In another, one neighbourhood official, or “muhtar”, candidate was killed and four people were wounded in a fight, Anadolu reported.

Several others were hurt in other incidents while one person was shot dead and two were wounded overnight ahead of the vote in Bursa, Demiroren reported.
