Congress Ahead In Chhattisgarh, BJP Close Behind: NDTV Poll Of Polls

New Delhi:

The Congress has a distinct edge over the BJP in its bid to retain power in Chhattisgarh, an NDTV poll of polls indicated Thursday evening. The Congress may win 49 seats – just above the majority mark of 46 – while the BJP bag only 38 seats, it showed.

If the Congress and Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel do go on and win this election, it will be a big boost for the ruling party ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha polls.

The most definitive predictions are from News24-Today’s Chanakya and Times Now-ETG.

The former gave the Congress 57 seats in the 90-member Assembly, where the majority mark is 46, and the BJP 33. Times Now said the Congress will win between 48 and 56 seats, and the BJP 32-40.

Chhattisgarh voted in a single phase on November 7. Results will be declared on Sunday.

Among the rest, Republic TV-Matrize, Dainik Bhaskar and India TV-CNX also indicated a win for the Congress. Republic TV gave the ruling party 44-52 seats, and Dainik Bhaskar and India TV 46-55/6.

Republic TV gave the BJP 34-42 seats. Dainik Bhaskar gave it 35-45 seats and India TV 30-40.

The other exit polls gave the Congress an edge, but suggested it might be short of majority and that the BJP might have a chance. Between them, ABP News-C Voter, India Today-My Axis, and Republic TV-Matrize gave the Congress between 40 and 53 seats, while the BJP got between 34 and 42 seats.

The other two polls – Jan Ki Baat and TV9 Bharatvarsh-Polstrat – also hinted at a Congress win. Jan Ki Baat indicated 42-53 seats and TV9 Bharatvarsh gave it 40-50, while the BJP got between 34 and 45.

Health Warning: Exit polls often get it wrong!

NDTV’s Pre-Poll Survey

The exit poll data seems to tally with opinions canvassed by NDTV in its October pre-poll survey, which indicated 79 per cent of voters are happy with Mr Baghel’s government.

They indicated that key infrastructure, such as drinking water supply, construction of roads, and the quality of state-run hospitals and schools have all improved under the Congress government.

A significant result was that 45 per cent of voters said Chief Minister Baghel had improved the condition of various tribal communities, compared to only 21 per cent who thought this was not the case.

And Mr Baghel was overwhelmingly respondents’ choice to be the next Chief Minister – 39 per cent compared to 24 per cent for the BJP’s campaign face – Raman Singh.

What Happened In 2018?

.In the 2018 election, the Congress swept to a landslide win with 68 seats to its name and the BJP, which won 49 seats in 2013, got just 15. Interestingly, the vote share difference wasn’t as pronounced as the split of seats suggested; the BJP got 33 per cent of the votes and the Congress got 43 per cent.

"Haven't Signed…": Rahul Dravid On Team India Coaching Contract Duration

Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid on Thursday stated that he hasn’t signed any papers regarding the length of his contract extension with Team India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced the extension of contracts for head coach Rahul Dravid and the support staff of Team India (Senior Men). “The BCCI engaged in productive discussions with Rahul Dravid after the term of his contract ended following the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and unanimously agreed to further the tenure,” BCCI said in an official statement.

However, the official statement from BCCI didn’t state the contract length of Dravid as well as the rest of the staff.

When quizzed about his contract length Dravid said, “It’s announced officially, I haven’t signed anything yet, let the papers come officially from the BCCI.”.

Batting coach Vikram Rathour, fielding coach T Dilip and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey will continue their stint with Team India as BCCI also extended contracts of the support staff of Team India.

Dravid’s second stint with Team India will be the tour of South Africa from December 10, which will have three ODIs and T20Is each and two Tests. The red-ball leg will start from December 26.

Following that will be a five-match Test series against England at home, before the ICC T20 World Cup in June in West Indies/USA.

Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri following a disappointing ICC T20 World Cup campaign in 2021, which saw India exit in the Super 12 stage. He was appointed for a two-year term, which ended with India’s runners-up finish in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup at home.

After the announcement of the contract extension, Dravid said, “The last two years with Team India have been thoroughly memorable. Together, we have witnessed the highs and lows, and throughout this journey, the support and camaraderie within the group have been phenomenal. I am genuinely proud of the culture we have set in the dressing room. It’s a culture that stands resilient, whether in moments of triumph or adversity. The skills and talent that our team possesses are phenomenal, and what we’ve stressed is following the right process and sticking to our preparations, which has had a direct impact on the overall result.”

“I thank the BCCI and the Office Bearers for placing their trust in me, endorsing my vision, and providing support during this period. The demands of this role necessitate considerable time away from home, and I deeply appreciate my family’s sacrifices and support. Their instrumental role behind the scenes has been invaluable. As we embrace new challenges post the World Cup, we remain committed to the pursuit of excellence,” he added.

Trump Gag Order Reimposed After Flood Of Online Abuse

Trump Gag Order Reimposed After Flood Of Online Abuse

Trump testified on November 6 and is expected to again take the witness stand on December 11.

New York:

An appeals court on Thursday reimposed a limited gag order on former president Donald Trump intended to protect court staff at his New York civil fraud trial after a flood of online abuse.

Judge Arthur Engoron had slapped the gag order on Trump on October 3 after he insulted the judge’s principal law clerk in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Trump’s attorneys appealed the order claiming it violated his right to free speech and it had been suspended pending a hearing.

The appeals court panel on Thursday rejected Trump’s appeal and reimposed the speech restrictions.

“On a daily basis, the judge and his staff are being inundated with hundreds of harassing and threatening phone calls, voicemail messages, and emails,” some of them anti-Semitic, according to a document in the decision.

It said personal details of the clerk who has faced Trump’s ire, including her phone number, had been revealed, and that she was receiving 20 to 30 calls a day.

Engoron has fined the 77-year-old Trump a total of $15,000 for two violations of the restriction.

Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and his two eldest sons are accused of inflating the value of their real estate assets to receive more favorable bank loans and insurance terms.

Trump testified on November 6 and is expected to again take the witness stand on December 11.

He has called Engoron “crazy” and “unhinged,” and denounced New York state prosecutor Letitia James, who is Black, as “corrupt” and “racist.”

Trump lawyer Christopher Kise in a statement to US media called Thursday’s decision to reinstate the gag order “tragic day for the rule of law.”

– Other trials –

Trump’s freedom of speech is also an issue in the federal trial due to open on March 4 in Washington, where he is accused of seeking to upend the results of the 2020 election in a concerted effort that led to the violent January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters.

Trump additionally faces federal charges for alleged mishandling top-secret documents after he left the White House, and has been indicted for racketeering in Georgia on accusations that he tried to overturn the 2020 election results in the southern state.

Insurgency Waned Drastically In Northeast In Past 9 Years, Data Shows

Insurgency Waned Drastically In Northeast In Past 9 Years, Data Shows

At least 8,000 insurgents in northeast have surrendered since 2014, sources said

New Delhi:

The historic signing of the peace deal with Manipur’s oldest valley-based armed group UNLF brings into focus the Centre’s huge success in bringing peace and development to the northeast region, sources have said.

The scale of violence has also reduced drastically in the past nine years, compared to the decade before 2014, data shows.

Between 2004 and 2014, the northeast saw 11,121 violent incidents, which fell by 73 per cent to 3,033 between 2014 and 2023. Some 458 security personnel were killed in action between 2004 and 2014, while the casualties fell by 72 per cent in the past nine years; 2,625 civilians were killed in violence in the northeast between 2004 and 2014, while in the past nine years the deaths fell by 86 per cent to 356.

The Centre released Rs 2,878 crore to the northeast as reimbursement of security-related expenses by the state governments in the past nine years, or the two terms of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sources said.

At least 8,000 insurgents have surrendered since 2014, sources said.

The Centre has signed nine key peace agreements during this period – Achik National Volunteer Council agreement (2014), National Liberation Front of Twipra (Sabir Kumar Debbarma) of 2019, Bru Accord (2020), Bodo Accord (2020), Karbi Accord (2021), Tribal Peace Agreement (2022), Dimasa National Liberation Army Agreement (2023), Assam-Meghalaya Interstate Border Agreement (2022), and the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh Inter-State Boundary Agreement (2023).

The scope of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA, has also been reduced in many parts of the northeast as peace returned gradually.

Over 70 per cent of Assam is out of the AFSPA’s cover now. In Manipur, 19 police station areas in seven districts have been kept out of the Disturbed Area tag as these places have seen stability in recent years.

In Arunachal Pradesh, AFSPA remains only in three districts and three police station areas in another district. In Nagaland, the Disturbed Area notification has been removed from 18 police station areas in eight districts.

AFSPA has been removed completely from Tripura and Meghalaya.

Six More Hostages Released By Hamas, Confirms Israel

Six More Hostages Released By Hamas, Confirms Israel

More than 90 hostages have been released by Hamas since the start of Gaza truce deal.

Jerusalem:

Six Israeli hostages released in the Gaza Strip returned to Israel late Thursday, the Israeli prime minister’s office said, hours before a truce extension was due to expire.

The release of the six — four adults, a 17-old girl and an 18-year-old man — who mediator Qatar said included Uruguayan, Mexican and Russian dual nationals, came after two women, including a French-Israeli dual national, were released earlier in the day.

That brought the total freed on Thursday to eight, while the truce agreement stipulates that a minimum of 10 Israeli hostages should be released alive each day.

The discrepancy came as mediators pursued discussions to extend the truce, which was due to expire at 0500 GMT on Friday.

A source close to Hamas told AFP that it considered two Russian-Israeli women released on Wednesday in addition to the required 10 as part of the seventh group freed, so that “as a result, the number of (hostages) in the seventh group is 10”.

Mediator Qatar appeared to back the calculation.

The agreement requires Israel to release three Palestinian prisoners for every hostage freed, and Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said 30 Palestinians would be released from Israeli prisons, in exchange for a total of 10 hostages, a tally which included “two Russian citizens who were released yesterday”.

No Clear Winner In Mizoram, Hung Assembly Likely: NDTV Poll Of Polls

No Clear Winner In Mizoram, Hung Assembly Likely: NDTV Poll Of Polls

There are 40 seats in the Mizoram assembly

New Delhi:

An NDTV poll of polls shows Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) getting at least 17 seats and the Congress seven seats in the 40-member Mizoram assembly. Chief Minister Zoramthanga’s Mizo National Front (MNF) is projected to get 14 seats, according to NDTV’s poll of polls.

Earlier, exit polls showed no clear winner in the Mizoram assembly election. Initial exit polls by Jan Ki Baat showed the ZPM may win at least anywhere between 15 and 25 seats in the 40-member assembly, followed by the MNF with 10 to 14 seats.

India TV-CNX exit polls, however, show MNF winning 14-18 seats, ZPM 12-16, and Congress 8-10. ABP News-C Voter gives the MNF 15-21 seats and the ZPM 12-18 seats; the Congress trails with 2-8 seats.

Times Now-ETG exit polls show the MNF winning 14-18 seats, ZPM winning 10-14 seats, and the Congress 9-13 seats.

Republic TV-Matrize exit polls gave the MNF 17-22 seats, ZPM 7-12 seats and the Congress 7-10 seats.

All the exit polls for Mizoram gave the BJP a maximum of two seats.

These numbers indicate either a neck and neck fight or no clear winner, raising the possibility of alliance formation. The exit polls hence indicate a likely hung assembly.

Health warning: exit polls often get it wrong.

Polling for the 40-member Mizoram assembly was held on November 7, where more than 80 per cent of the 8.57 lakh voters turned up to decide the fate of 174 candidates. According to the 2011 census, Christians constitute more than 87 per cent of Mizoram’s population.

Chief Minister Zoramthanga has expressed confidence there won’t be a hung assembly in Mizoram and his Mizo National Front (MNF) will form government again.

Iran praises Yemen's support for Palestinians amid brutal Israeli aggression

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has praised Yemen’s support for the Palestinian people at a time of exceptionally heightened Israeli aggression.

The top Iranian diplomat visited the Yemeni Embassy in Tehran on Thursday to convey the Islamic Republic’s gratitude towards Sana’a for the support.

“Yemen’s support for the people of Gaza [Strip] and the [occupied] West Bank is admirable,” Amir-Abdollahian said, meeting with Yemeni Ambassador, Ibrahim Mohammed al-Dailami.

The meeting came amid a war that the Israeli regime has been waging against Gaza since October 7, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 15,500 Palestinians. The regime has also intensified its attacks against the West Bank since the onset of the war.

Yemeni forces have staged several operations against the occupied territories since the beginning of the Israeli military campaign, including ballistic and cruise missile attacks, and have seized at least three Israeli ships traveling through Yemen’s territorial waters.

The forces have also staged at least two operations targeting the United States’ interests in protest at Washington’s unreserved military and political support for the Israeli war.

“We consider defending the people of Palestine and Gaza to be our duty, and will continue supporting Palestine as long as it is necessary,” the Yemeni envoy said.

“The decision by the [Yemeni] leaders in Sana’a towards targeting the Zionist regime’s interests in the occupied territories and at sea is in line with our strong belief in defending the people of Gaza,” he added.

Also on Thursday, Yemen’s Armed Forces released a statement, pledging to renew their attacks against Israeli targets if the regime resumed its war on Gaza following an underway truce that is expected to expire later in the day.

Kourtney Kardashian blames ‘generational trauma’ for family’s ‘toxic’ relationships

She opened up about her past ‘wounds’ while waxing lyrical about therapy to her clan on the latest episode of ‘The Kardashians’, reports Female First UK.

Kourtney Kardashian blames ‘generational trauma’ for family’s ‘toxic’ relationships

Los Angeles: Kourtney Kardashian thinks her family chose ‘toxic’ partners due to ‘generational trauma’. The reality star, 44, was previously in an on-off relationship with her ex, Scott Disick, 40, for nearly 10 years, before getting together with her musician-husband Travis Barker.

She opened up about her past ‘wounds’ while waxing lyrical about therapy to her clan on the latest episode of ‘The Kardashians’, reports Female First UK.

She said: “I didn’t start a self-awareness journey knowing what I was doing. I started therapy through a toxic relationship and then learned so much about myself, about my family, about why I do certain things, about our childhood wounds, about how they show up in intimate relationships ‘generational trauma’.”

As per Female First UK, Kourtney has three children with Scott Mason, Penelope and Reign and recently gave birth to her first child with husband Travis, son Rocky.

Despite her support for therapy, her sister Khloe, 39, told her sister counselling isn’t always the answer in life. She said: “No offence or anything, but we all have problems just buckle up and let’s go.”

But Kourtney insisted: “There’s certain patterns to break. You don’t want to pass things down to your kids.” Khloe then asked if Kourtney felt choosing ‘bad partners’ was a genetic trait. Kourtney replied: “I think it’s generational. It’s from MJ (their mum Kris Jenner’s mother.) She was married three times, we all have picked people we thought we could change different things about them and we can’t.”

Kris, 68, replied: “I’m not even thinking about that. In a billion years I’ve got a full, fabulous life, why am I going back to reimagine?”

Khloe also joked in a confessional interview: “God bless Kourtney, because she’s definitely trying to have this therapy talk, and God bless my mom because she’s definitely not.”

Kourtney added later in the episode: “I know that people in my family would benefit from therapy. But I’m letting go of trying to change other people and just accepting everyone for who they are. This is me. This is my journey. That’s you and that’s your journey.”
