Narayana Murthy Says Climate Change May Trigger Mass Migration To Bengaluru, Pune

Mr Murthy expressed optimism about India’s ability to tackle these challenges

Highlighting the urgency of climate action, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy warned that climate change poses a significant risk of mass migration to urban centres like Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad, as rising temperatures and extreme weather events force people to abandon their homes in less resilient areas.

Speaking at an event in Pune on Friday, Mr Murthy issued a stark warning about the effects of rising temperatures and shifting weather patterns. He cautioned that within the next 20-25 years, certain rural areas in India may become uninhabitable, potentially forcing millions to migrate to urban centres that are already struggling with modern-day challenges.

“What is likely to happen is that there will be a mass migration from rural parts of states… into habitable places like Bangalore, maybe Pune, maybe Hyderabad,” Murthy remarked during an award ceremony in Pune.

He further pointed out that Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad are grappling with their own issues, such as pollution and traffic congestion, making them increasingly difficult to live in. “These cities have become extremely challenging to live in, difficult to navigate, and have witnessed rising pollution levels. They are heading toward becoming unlivable,” Murthy warned.

Mr Murthy stressed the urgency of collaboration among the corporate sector, political leaders, and bureaucrats to address climate change and mitigate rural-to-urban migration. He highlighted the critical need for such cooperation to prevent India’s urban hubs from becoming overwhelmed by an influx of migrants, which would further strain their already burdened infrastructure.

“We in India, particularly the corporate sector, have to cooperate with politicians and bureaucrats and ensure that there is no mass migration,” Murthy was quoted as saying by The Economic Times.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Mr Murthy expressed optimism about India’s ability to tackle these challenges. While acknowledging that India often acts reactively, he conveyed confidence that by 2030, the country would achieve significant progress in meeting climate targets and addressing the migration crisis.

“I am optimistic that we will make progress by 2030,” Murthy added, reassuring the audience that with timely intervention and collective efforts, India could overcome these pressing issues.

India’s rapid urbanisation and population growth have already stretched cities to their limits. The anticipated influx of migrants driven by climate change could exacerbate existing challenges, intensifying shortages of infrastructure and resources.

Three And Easy As Borussia Dortmund Move Into Bundesliga Top Six

Borussia Dortmund scored three goals in a devastating five-minute spell to beat Wolfsburg 3-1 and end the year in the top six of the Bundesliga. Dortmund came into this game without a win in their previous three league outings but produced some stylish attacking moments to blow Wolfsburg away on the road. Dutchman Donyell Malen got things moving, turning in Ramy Bensebaini’s corner from close range. The visitors doubled their lead through the impressive young Germany star Max Beier, who met Julian Brandt‘s through ball with a sublime first-time finish with the outside of his right foot.

Beier turned provider just two minutes later, cutting back a low cross for an unmarked Brandt to find the bottom corner.

Wolfsburg were stunned, having conceded in the 25th, 28th and 30th minutes and the rest of the contest was a damage limitation exercise for Ralph Hasenhuettl’s side, although they pulled one back in the second half through Denis Vavro.

Dortmund had Pascal Gross sent off just after the hour but it didn’t threaten to derail a win that keeps them within two points of third place.

“In the first half we played really well, had very good positional play and kept moving forward with determination,” said Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin.

“In the second half we allowed the opponent back into the game completely unnecessarily and you have to defend. Then you get a red card, which is totally unnecessary.”

On a good weekend for the teams from Germany’s Ruhr region, Bochum beat relegation rivals Heidenheim 2-0 for their first victory of the Bundesliga season.

Rooted in last place in the table, Bochum took an early lead courtesy of striker Moritz Broschinski, whose expert low volley was reward for Ibrahima Sissoko’s quality cross from the right.

Bochum, who brought in veteran coach Dieter Hecking last month in the hope of igniting their season and saving them from relegation, appeared the hungrier of the sides.

When the second goal came, it was no less than Bochum deserved.

Matus Bero created space on the edge of the box and drilled in from 15 yards, putting the hosts in complete control before the break.

Heidenheim improved after the restart but the damage was already done and Bochum, who had lost 11 of their previous 14 games, closed it out for a precious three points.

Bochum stay bottom going into the winter break but end the calendar year having picked up four points from their last two games and stay within two points of Holstein Kiel, who are directly above them in 17th.

Meanwhile, 16th-placed Heidenheim are in freefall.

Last season, their first in the Bundesliga, was a huge success, finishing eighth and qualifying for Europe.

But they are now coming to terms with their seventh-straight Bundesliga defeat and sit just two points ahead of Kiel.

Why Chinese Women Are Doing Maternity Photoshoots With Fake Baby Bumps

Reflecting a changing societal landscape, single women in China are now opting for maternity photoshoots with fake baby bumps, capturing this milestone in their lives despite the country’s declining birth rate and low marriage rates. This trend, as reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), challenges traditional Chinese values that once stigmatized single pregnancy.

The rise of this trend can be attributed to women’s desire to capture beautiful maternity photos while maintaining their current physique, anticipating potential body changes during future pregnancies.

The “premade maternity photos” trend gained national attention after a Generation Z influencer shared a video and photos of her experience on social media. Meizi Gege, who boasts over 5.7 million followers on a prominent social media platform, explained, “While I’m still slim, I wore a fake belly to take maternity photos and enjoyed a pre-made life. I even did it with my best friend!”

In the video, Meizi proudly displays her slim figure while wearing the “fake belly.” According to SCMP, a 26-year-old woman revealed she had taken her maternity photos at 23, despite not being married, while another woman mentioned taking wedding photos at 22, “just in case I get wrinkles by 30.”

However, the trend has sparked criticism for promoting narrow beauty standards that idealize being “white, skinny, and young.” Critics argue that it fosters body image anxiety among new mothers by perpetuating the unrealistic expectation that women should maintain a youthful, slim figure during pregnancy.

A user wrote, ” I will shoot my 70th birthday photos now and then post them on social media later. It will make me look so young!”

“I will find some time to arrange my funeral pictures before I die,” another user wrote on Chinese social media platform.

ISRO To Study How Crops Grow In Space On PSLV C60 Mission

ISRO To Study How Crops Grow In Space On PSLV C60 Mission

The PSLV Orbital Experiment Module (POEM) will carry 24 experiments.

New Delhi:

Demonstration of seed germination in outer space, a robotic arm to catch a tethered debris there, and testing of green propulsion systems are some of the experiments planned on the POEM-4 — the fourth stage of ISRO’s PSLV rocket that remains in orbit after launching a satellite.

The PSLV-C60 mission, slated for an yearend launch, is scheduled to place the twin satellites ‘Chaser and Target’ to demonstrate the space docking technologies that are crucial for building India’s space station.

The PSLV Orbital Experiment Module (POEM) will carry 24 experiments — 14 from various ISRO labs and 10 from private universities and start-ups — to demonstrate various technologies in space.

ISRO plans to grow eight cowpea seeds from seed germination and plant sustenance until the two-leaf stage in a closed-box environment with active thermal control as part of the Compact Research Module for Orbital Plant Studies (CROPS) developed by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.

The Amity Plant Experimental Module in Space (APEMS), developed by Amity University, Mumbai, plans to study the growth of spinach in a microgravity environment.

Two parallel experiments will be carried out simultaneously — one on POEM-4 in space and one on the ground at the university.

The experiment’s outcome will provide insights into how higher plants sense the direction of gravity and light.

The Debris Capture Robotic Manipulator, developed by VSSC, will demonstrate the capturing of tethered debris by a robotic manipulator using visual serving and object motion prediction in the space environment.

The robotic manipulator will be capable of capturing free-floating debris and refuelling tethered and free-floating spacecraft in future POEM missions.

Mumbai-based start-up Manastu Space will test Vyom-2U, the green propulsion thruster, that uses a blend of hydrogen peroxide and in-house additives as fuel, with the goal of providing a safer and higher-performing alternative to hydrazine for space applications.

The Varuna payload, developed by Piersight Space-Ahmedabad, is an in-orbit demonstration of a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in a CubeSat form factor.

This mission marks the initial step towards establishing a constellation of SAR and Automatic Identification System (AIS) satellites, aiming to provide persistent, near real-time monitoring of all human and industrial activity at sea.

'Sunny Leone' Got Rs 1000/Month Under Chhattisgarh Scheme For Married Women

'Sunny Leone' Got Rs 1000/Month Under Chhattisgarh Scheme For Married Women

One of the accounts receiving money every month was opened in Sunny Leone’s name

Raipur:

In a shocking case of fraud in a Chhattisgarh government scheme for married women, a man allegedly opened an account in the name of actor Sunny Leone and had been pocketing the sum of Rs 1,000 deposited in it every month.

Under the BJP government’s Mahtari Vandan Yojana, married women in Chhattisgarh receive Rs 1,000 into their accounts every month. It has now come to light that one of the accounts where the sum was being deposited was in the name of Sunny Leone.

The man who allegedly opened and operated this account has been identified as Virendra Joshi and a case is being registered against him for further action. Officials responsible for verification of eligible beneficiaries of the scheme are also being identified.

The fraud has been reported at Talur village in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region. District collector Haris S has asked the Women and Child Development Department to carry out an in-depth probe into this matter and seize the bank account for recovery. According to officials, media reports had drawn their attention to this shocking case of fraud.

The revelation has sparked a heated exchange between the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress.

State Congress chief Deepak Baij has alleged that over 50 per cent of beneficiaries under the Mahtari Vandan Yojana are fake. Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao shot back that the Congress is pained because women of the state are now receiving the monthly assistance that the Congress could not provide in its previous term.

Donald Trump Vows To "Stop Transgender Lunacy" On Day One In Office

US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday pledged to “stop the transgender lunacy” on day one of his presidency, as Republicans — set to control both chambers of Congress and the White House — continue their push against LGBTQ rights.

“I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high schools,” the president-elect said at an event for young conservatives in Phoenix, Arizona.

He also vowed to “keep men out of women’s sports,” adding that “it will be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.”

Speaking to the AmericaFest conference in a border state he easily carried in the November election, Trump further promised immediate measures against “migrant crime,” vowed to designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and doubled down on his talk of restoring US control of the Panama Canal.

Transgender issues have roiled US politics in recent years, as Democratic- and Republican-controlled states have moved in opposite directions on policy such as medical treatment and what books on the topic are allowed in public or school libraries.

Last week, when the US Congress approved its annual defense budget, it included a provision to block funding of some gender-affirming care for the transgender children of service members.

In his speech Sunday, which amounted to something of a victory lap, Trump made expansive promises for his second term — and drew a dark picture of the four years preceding it, under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the latter of whom he defeated in the 2024 election.

“On January 20, the United States will turn the page forever on four long, horrible years of failure, incompetence, national decline, and we will inaugurate a new era of peace, prosperity and national greatness,” Trump said, referring to his swearing-in.

“I will end the war in Ukraine. I will stop the chaos in the Middle East, and I will prevent, I promise, World War III.”

He added: “The golden age of America is upon us.”

The president-elect has yet to explain publicly how he plans to bring a quick end to the war in Ukraine, or to bring peace to the Middle East.

But in the sort of bellicose language he sometimes used even against US allies in the past, Trump said Sunday that Panamanian authorities “haven’t treated us fairly” in their operation of the Panama Canal.

He had said earlier that fees for use of the canal — construction of which was begun by France and completed by the United States — are “ridiculous.”

And he added Sunday that if the principles behind the 1970s treaty that gave Panama full control of the canal are not followed, “then we will demand” that it be returned to the United States “in full, quickly and without question.”

Thousands of ships transit the key Central American waterway every year, making it critical to US and international commerce.

The president-elect, who regularly blames migrants from Latin America for America’s drug problems, renewed his vow to immediately begin “the largest deportation operation in American history” upon taking office, and later went further, saying he would “immediately designate the (drug) cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.”

“This criminal network operating on American soil will be dismantled, deported and destroyed,” Trump said.

During his first term in 2019, after the killing in Mexico of nine American citizens from a Mormon community, Trump vowed to apply the terrorist designation to Mexican cartels.

But he relented following a plea from then-Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
