Prime Volleyball League: Calicut Heroes beat Hyderabad Black Hawks in straight sets

Hyderabad: Calicut Heroes returned to winning ways in a dominant fashion, defeating the Hyderabad Black Hawks 15-13, 18-16, 16-14 in the third season of the Prime Volleyball League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai on Saturday.

Chirag Yadav was named the player of the match. Sahil Kumar began well, justifying his selection in the starting line-up for Hyderabad. Jerome Vinith’s fiery attacks helped Calicut gain momentum. Mohan Ukkrapandian’s passing allowed Vikas Maan to attack from the middle, but strong blocks from Stefan Kovacevic, Sahil, and Prince kept things close. But Chirag Yadav’s involvement in attacking moves pushed Calicut ahead.

As Stefan began swinging from the middle to push Hyderabad, Calicut’s Vikas showed his swings from the region to help his side. Sahil’s threat from Zone 4 and a few unforced errors from Calicut allowed Hyderabad to make way back into the contest. But Danial Moatazedi made crucial blocks and Chirag’s incessant attacks gave Calicut control of the topsy-turvy battle.

Despite being on the back foot, Hyderabad’s defensive game remained strong, keeping them in the hunt. Sahil’s swings proved hard for Calicut’s two-man block to tackle. Hemanth’s consistent pipe attacks helped Hyderabad and the momentum shifted. But two massive blocks from Ukkra and Chirag helped Calicut find their way back and win the game in straight sets.

Ravi Kishan, who emerged victorious in the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, has been nominated once more by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Transitioning from an actor to a politician, Ravi Kishan is now recognized as the Amitabh Bachchan of Bhojpuri cinema.

However, he has indeed made a significant mark in the pan-Indian entertainment industry. Ravi Kishan has acted in numerous Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu films, earning recognition for his performances. Apart from his work in films, Ravi Kishan has also ventured into the digital streaming space on several popular web services on OTT platforms.

Manoj Tiwari, who secured victories in the North-East Delhi Lok Sabha seat in both the 2014 and 2019 elections, was the subject of speculation regarding a potential shift to contest from a seat in Bihar. However, it has been confirmed that he will, for the third consecutive time, vie for the Lok Sabha seat in North-East Delhi.

Dinesh Lal Yadav, popularly known as ‘Nirahua,’ contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Azamgarh constituency in 2019, where he faced a defeat against the Samajwadi Party’s national president, Akhilesh Yadav. However, in the 2022 elections, Akhilesh Yadav decided to contest the assembly elections, leading to his resignation from the Lok Sabha seat. Subsequently, a by-election was conducted to fill the vacant position, and Nirahua emerged victorious by defeating Akhilesh’s brother and Samajwadi Party candidate, Dharmendra Yadav.

Pawan Singh, renowned as a Bhojpuri singer, actor, music composer, and stage performer, has made a significant move into the political arena. Recognized for his contributions to the Bhojpuri film industry, Singh has now been named as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Asansol Lok Sabha seat in Bengal. This marks a notable transition in his career as he ventures into the realm of politics.

Simultaneously, several prominent figures from the film industry have been announced as candidates for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Notable names include Hema Malini, set to contest from the Mathura Lok Sabha seat, Locket Chatterjee, who will vie for the Hooghly seat in West Bengal, and singer-actor Suresh Gopi, who is slated to contest from the Thrissur seat in Kerala.

Bar Association wants family, labour, SC/ST courts in Kothagudem

Kothagudem Bar Association appealed to High Court judge EV Venugopal to establish family, SC/ST and labour courts in Kothagudem.

Kothagudem: Kothagudem Bar Association has appealed to High Court judge EV Venugopal to establish family court, SC/ST court and labour court in Kothagudem.

The Bar Association president Ramesh Kumar Makkad, general secretary Ravilala Rama Rao and vice president Dundra Ramesh met Justice Venugopal during his visit to the district court on Saturday and submitted a memorandum.

The association office bearers said that there was a serious shortage of staff in the eight courts that were currently being run in Kothagudem district court premises and asked justice Venugopal, who was Kothagudem district portfolio judge, to fill up those vacancies.

In the year 2017, the State government sanctioned Rs 60 lakh to Kothagudem court and the amount remained unspent. The funds could be used for the construction of SC/ST court and family court, they noted.

The association wanted a government pleader appointed to Kothagudem principal district court, to construct new court buildings on ten acres of land and to shift the first additional judicial magistrate court into the premises of the district court.

Appointment of regular judicial officers to the agency courts and monitoring the functioning of the agent to government (district Collector) court, special assistant agent and sub-divisional magistrate (mobile court) by the High Court from time to time were among the issues brought to the notice of the High Court judge.

The association sports secretary Pittala Rama Rao, library secretary Yasa Yugandhar, advocate Mendu Rajamallu and others were present.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the government would consider the suggestions to install the statues of Telangana’s prominent leaders on Tank Bund in Hyderabad, besides examining the installation of statues of Chakali Ailamma and Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud, former union Minister S Jaipal Reddy and former Speaker D Sripada Rao.

The Government would constitute a Cabinet Sub-Committee and take a policy decision in this regard shortly, he said while participating in the 87th birth anniversary celebrations of Sripada Rao here on Saturday.

Sripada Rao played a key role as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.

He won as MLA from Manthani Assembly constituency three times, he said.

UK ship attacked by Yemeni army sinks in Red Sea

The Yemeni army said it attacked the Rubymar on Feb.18, with several naval missiles in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait — a strategic waterway linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, Press TV reported.

The cargo ship had been drifting northward when it came under attack.

Yemen said the Rubymar sank late Friday as stormy weather took hold over the Red Sea.

The cargo ship was abandoned for 12 days, even after Yemen warned that the vessel “is in a tragic situation and is on the verge of sinking after water leaked into the engine room.”

Yemeni officials had warned about “a major environmental disaster if it sinks.”

Yemen has targeted ships either owned by the Israeli regime or sailing toward Israeli ports in a strong gesture sympathetic to Palestinians in Gaza over the past few months.

The Yemenis have made it clear that they will not hesitate to carry out qualitative operations against all hostile targets in defense of their homeland and in reaffirmation of their unwavering support for the Palestinian nation.

They said earlier that strikes targeting those ships in the Red Sea will not stop unless the regime ends its genocidal campaign.

International shipping companies, however, are safe to sail in the area if they are neither owned by Israel nor destined for ports in the occupied Palestinian territories, according to the Yemeni Armed Forces.

PM, 34 Ministers On BJP's 1st List Of 195 Candidates For Lok Sabha Polls

The list also includes 28 women and 47 leaders under the age of 50.

New Delhi:

Hoping to get a massive first-mover advantage as it works towards its target of winning 370 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has announced a list of 195 candidates even before the poll dates have been notified. The list includes the party’s heaviest hitters, PM Narendra Modi, who will be contesting from Varanasi for the third time, and Home Minister Amit Shah, who will be fielded again from Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will contest from Lucknow and Smriti Irani will be fighting from Amethi, where she had pulled off a shock victory against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in 2019.

As many as 34 Central and state ministers and two former chief ministers are on the list, which also includes 28 women, 47 leaders under the age of 50 and 57 members from the OBC community. Of the 195, 51 are from the all-important state of Uttar Pradesh, 20 from West Bengal and five from Delhi.

For Delhi, Praveen Khandelwal, Manoj Tiwari and Sushma Swaraj’s daughter Bansuri Swaraj are among the candidates. Ramesh Bidhuri, who was at the centre of a huge controversy following his alleged communal remarks against BSP lawmaker Danish Ali in the Lok Sabha last year, has not been repeated from the South Delhi seat. The seat will now be fought by Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, the leader of the opposition in the Delhi Assembly.

Ministers In The Fray

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who had been elected from the Rajya Sabha earlier, will be contesting from Porbandar in Gujarat. Thiruvananthapuram is expected to see an interesting contest as another Rajya Sabha member and minister, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has been named from the seat, which is held by the Congress’ Shashi Tharoor.

Among other Union ministers, Rajya Sabha MP Jyotiraditya Scindia will contest from Guna in Madhya Pradesh, a constituency the former Congress leader had held since 2002 until his loss to the BJP’s Krishna Pal Singh Yadav in 2019. His fellow Rajya Sabha colleague Bhupender Yadav will be fielded from Alwar and Kiren Rijiju will contest from Arunachal West.

Sarbananda Sonowal will contest from Dibrugarh in Assam, Arjun Ram Meghwal from Bikaner, G Kishan Reddy from Secunderabad and Arjun Munda from Khunti in Jharkhand.

In a surprising move amid the farmers’ protest, Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni will contest from the Kheri constituency again. Mr Teni’s son, Ashish, had been jailed for his alleged involvement in mowing down four farmers in Lakhmipur Kheri in 2021 and justice for the victims has been one of the key demands in the ongoing protests against the Union government.

Shivraj Chouhan To Contest

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who wasn’t made the Madhya Pradesh chief minister despite the BJP’s stunning victory last year, seems to be headed for a national role as he will be contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Vidisha. Another big headline from the state is that controversial MP Pragya Singh Thakur has not been repeated from Bhopal, which will now be contested by Alok Sharma.

Among the other key candidates, Hema Malini will be fielded from Mathura, a constituency she has represented since 2014. Former Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb has been named from Tripura West.

4 of 5 MPs Replaced In Delhi

Apart from Mr Bidhuri, Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi, former Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, and Parvesh Verma have not been given tickets for the Lok Sabha seats in Delhi that they had contested and won in 2019. Manoj Tiwari, the MP from North East Delhi, is the only one who has kept his seat and candidates are yet to be named for the remaining two constituencies.

Exhaustive Process

The list, which also focuses on some constituencies in which the party is perceived to be weak, has been released after a series of deliberations, including a late-night, five-hour meeting chaired by PM Modi on Thursday.

The timing of the list’s release also indicates an effort to put pressure on the opposition INDIA bloc, which is still finalising seat-sharing deals in some states and has failed to arrive at a consensus on others, including West Bengal and Punjab.

The decision on the candidates was taken after an exhaustive process in which feedback from voters in each constituency and evaluation of the sitting MPs’ performance played a key role. The use of technology, including the Namo App, was crucial in this. In seats where the party had not won in 2019, names of probables were finalised after conducting extensive surveys.

Armed with the data, the national brass held deliberations with the leadership from each state. Caste equations were also taken into account before picking the candidates.
