Indian Men's Squash Team Enters Final; Women Sign Off With Bronze

The Indian team humbled defending champions Malaysia 2-0 to reach the final of the men’s squash event after the seasoned Saurav Ghosal and Abhay Singh registered identical wins at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Friday. India thus set up a marquee gold medal clash with Pakistan, against whom they lost in the pool stage and will seek revenge heading into the final. Abhay Singh started the proceedings for India on a positive note, securing a 3-1 (11-3 12-10 9-11 11-6) win over Muhammad Addeen Idrakie Bin Bahtiar in the opening match. He took 57 minutes to ward off the challenge of Bin Bahtiar.

The experienced Ghosal then got the better of Eain Yow NG 3-1 (11-8 11-6 12-10 11-3) in 69 minutes to wrap up the second semifinal in favour of India.

Mahesh Mangaonkar was not required to play his match against Mohammad Syafiq Bin Mohd Kamal.

The Indian men had settled for the bronze medal in the last edition of the Games in Indonesia.

Earlier, the Indian women’s squash team signed off with a bronze medal after going down fighting to Hong Kong in the semifinals of the continental showpiece.

Joshna was the only Indian who won her match as she defeated world number 24 Tze Lok Ho 3-2 (7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8) to level the tie after Tanvi went down meekly (3-0) to Sin Yuk Chan in the opener.

“Sometimes it’s just about hanging in there and fighting through. There were moments where that’s exactly what I did. I didn’t think too much about having a plan or a strategy. I knew today no matter what happens I had to keep fighting through,” Joshna said.

Playing against high-ranked and experienced opponent in Lee Ka Yi, the 15-year-old Anahat then tried her best but was undone by her inexperience.

The teenager saved eight match points as she went from 10-2 to 10-10 in the third game but eventually lost the final (0-3) 8-11, 7-11, 10-12 and the tie.

India had finished with a silver in the previous edition. They had lost to Hong Kong in the final at the 2018 Jakarta Games.

“It was 1-1 (in matches) and my match was a really important match, and if we had won that we would have gone to the finals. I feel like it could have gone better and I could have won it. They were really pushing me and hoping I would win the match and we would get a better medal,” Anahat said.

Joshna, who was a part of the silver winning side in 2018, was left a “little disappointed that they couldn’t get over the finish line”.

“We came in and we gave our best I’m just happy to have that fighting spirit on court. That’s who I am as a player.

“I was really happy I could play at a big stage for my country. Playing for India always brings out the best in me. I’m just glad I could do it today.”

Suryapet: The late R. Vidyasagar Rao’s dream of developing his native village, Jajireddygudem, has become a reality through the combined efforts of the state government and elected representatives.

During his lifetime, Vidyasagar Rao generously donated 40 guntas of his property in Jajireddygudem for the construction of a Kalyana Mandapam and contributed over Rs. one crore. His vision was to hand over the Kalyana Mandapam to the Grama Panchayat for maintenance, allowing the village to use the facility for functions free of charge.

Paris:

Airbus said Friday that it had secured an order for 32 A320neo planes from Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, as the airline expands its flights to the Chinese mainland and elsewhere in Asia.

Financial details of the sale were not disclosed, though at current list prices the deal would be worth $3.2 to $4.1 billion.

Cathay Pacific had signalled in August that it intended to bulk up its fleet of the popular medium-haul jets, on top of an original order for 32 A320neos in 2017.

Airbus says the more fuel-efficient versions of the single-aisle A320 planes are the best sellers in the industry, competing with the 737 MAX from Boeing.

“Cathay is one of the world’s leading airline groups and we are proud to be part of its recovery and growth plan,” the European planemaker’s chief commercial officer Christian Scherer said in a statement.

Thirteen planes from the original 2017 order have already been delivered, and Cathay said on August 10 that the new jets are expected to be delivered by 2029.

“These aircraft feature the latest technological enhancements to provide a quieter, more comfortable and more fuel-efficient journey for our customers,” Cathay’s chief Ronald Lam said at the time.

Probe finds ex-Pak PM Imran Khan and top party leadership involved in orchestrating May 9 violence

Lahore: Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and several top leaders of his party were directly involved in orchestrating the unprecedented anti-government violence on May 9, a joint investigation team has informed an anti-terrorism court here.

A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was constituted to probe the violence in Punjab province following the arrest of Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in connection with a corruption case on May 9.

The JIT headed by DIG Operations Imran Kishwar on Thursday submitted chargesheets against PTI leaders and hundreds of workers before an anti-terrorism court, reported the Dawn newspaper on Friday.
According to Lahore police, Khan, 70, and over 900 other party leaders and activists named in the May 9 cases have been “declared guilty of serious offences”, the report said.

In the chargesheets filed before the court, the prosecution alleged that the violent protests led by the suspects on May 9 were part of a planned conspiracy against the state.

It said over “400 pieces of video evidence, including speeches of the PTI chairman, proved that the attacks on military installations and premises in cantonment areas were pre-planned”.

A large number of PTI activists had attacked military installations, police vehicles, and other public and private properties in Lahore, according to the cases registered with the police. The vandalism at the Lahore Corps Commander’s House (Jinnah House), Askari Tower, and the Shadman police station were some of the major incidents during the violence.

“We have declared them prime accused in 12 out of the total 14 cases registered under the anti-terrorism act and other charges at Lahore’s various police stations… [and] challans have been submitted in the ATC,” the Dawn newspaper quoted DIG Kishwar as saying.

He said the JIT obtained “sufficient evidence” against the nominated persons, including Imran Khan, former Punjab governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema, former provincial ministers Mian Mehmoodur Rashid, Dr Yasmin Rashid, and others.

The digital and photogrammetric evidence as well as voice messages of the suspects “confirmed the allegations” levelled against them in over a dozen cases lodged at different police stations in the provincial capital, the DIG said.

According to the JIT report, Khan along with the cooperation of central, provincial and local leaderships, constituted this plan to push Pakistan towards civil war and the public was incited through fake and self-created stories, reported The Express Tribune.

Following the arrest of Imran Khan by paramilitary Rangers on May 9, unrest broke out in Pakistan that saw the torching and vandalising of dozens of military and state buildings, including the Army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad.

Police arrested over 10,000 workers of PTI and over 100 are being tried under the Army Act.

Khan has denied masterminding or inciting the attacks stating that it was a well-planned conspiracy to oust its party from upcoming elections.

He served as the country’s prime minister until April last year and currently faces around 180 cases, most of which stem from incidents on May 9.

Khan, who has been detained since August 5 after his arrest following his conviction in the Toshakhana case, is currently serving his sentence in the cipher case in Adiala jail.

The Islamabad High Court suspended his sentence in the Toshakhana case on August 29.

Sachin Waze gets bail in 2021 extortion case filed on complaint of hotelier in Mumbai

Sachin Waze gets bail in 2021 extortion case filed on complaint of hotelier in Mumbai

Mumbai: A special CBI court in Mumbai on Friday granted bail to former policeman Sachin Waze in connection with a 2021 extortion case filed on the complaint of a hotelier.

Waze had approached the special court in August this year after being denied bail by a metropolitan magistrate.

Waze, currently in judicial custody in the Antilia bomb scare and other cases being probed by Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation, was placed under arrest in the extortion case in November 2021.

Waze’s bail plea was allowed by special judge S U Hake, informed his lawyer Aarti Kelkar.

In his plea filed before the special court, Waze contended he is accused of offences for which the maximum sentence is three years in jail.

Since he had completed more than half this term as an undertrial prisoner, the plea said he was entitled for bail under the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

The CBI opposed the plea and told court the charges invoked against Waze are punishable with imprisonment of upto 10 years.

The CBI further said Waze has been in judicial custody(in this case) since November 2021. Hence, it is apparent the accused has not undergone detention extending up to half of the maximum period of imprisonment provided for the offence, the CBI submitted.

Goregaon police had, in August 2021, registered a case against Waze, former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh and others based on a complaint filed by hotelier and civic contractor Bimal Agarwal.

Agarwal alleged the accused had threatened to register cases against two bars owned by him and extorted ?11.92 lakh. The offence had reportedly taken place between January 2020 and March 2021.

The case was later transferred to the CBI following a Supreme court order.

"The Higher The Position…": Vice President's Swipe At Ashok Gehlot

'The Higher The Position...': Vice President's Swipe At Ashok Gehlot

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and wife Sudesh Dhankhar in Rajasthan

New Delhi:

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has some advice for Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who has been questioning the Vice President’s frequent visit to the Congress-ruled state where the assembly election will be held soon.

At an election campaign in Rajasthan’s Neemrana, Mr Gehlot had objected to the Vice President’s visit to five districts since the election is near and the visit would “send all kinds of message, which is not good for democracy.”

“Politicians should come, but please do not send the Vice President; it is a constitutional post. We respect the President and the Vice President. Yesterday the Vice President came and visited five districts. It is election season. If you come now it will send all kinds of message which is not good for democracy,” Mr Gehlot told a gathering in Neemrana.

Vice President Dhankhar in an apparent response to Mr Gehlot said those in high positions should use responsible words.

“The higher the position a person holds, the more dignified his conduct should be. Making any comment to gain political advantage is not a good thing. I call upon everyone to be responsible when it comes to constitutional institutions,” the Vice President said.

The Vice President said it is a matter of “contemplation and concern that some people make indecent comments on constitutional institutions, wearing political glasses.”

“They should not do this; such behaviour is against our cultural heritage,” he said. “We must not look at constitutional functionaries with a political prism to score political points. That is not acceptable,” he added.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had also asked Mr Gehlot whether the Vice President needs to take the Chief Minister’s permission for visiting Rajasthan.

“For the Vice President, the Chief Minister said why is he coming now? So the Vice President will come after getting permission from him?” Mr Meghwal told reporters in Jaipur on Thursday.

Mr Gehlot is on an intensive campaign across Rajasthan, touching 18 districts and heading into 38 constituencies. It’s also a part of “Mission 2030” outreach where Mr Gehlot is talking about his vision for Rajasthan till 2030.

Mr Gehlot strategy has a soft Hindutva subtext as he will also visit important temples during this campaign. His schedule shows he will visit at least 10 prominent and local temples during the third leg of this nine-day campaign before the election code kicks in.
