'Doesn't Scare Me': Asaduddin Owaisi Says Delhi Home Vandalised With Black Ink

New Delhi:

AIMIM chief and the party’s lone Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi claimed his home in Delhi’s high-security Ashoka Road area was vandalised with black ink by some unknown miscreants today.

Sharing a video of police officers wiping the ink off the plaque outside his residence, the MP wrote: “Some “unknown miscreants” vandalised my house with black ink today. I have now lost count of the number of times my Delhi residence has been targeted. When I asked the Delhi Police officials how this was happening right under their noses, they expressed helplessness.”

Tagging Home Minister Amit Shah and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Mr Owaisi said. “Amit Shah, this is happening under your oversight. Om Birla, please tell us if MPs’ safety will be guaranteed or not.”

The MP, who registered a decisive win from Hyderabad by defeating the BJP’s firebrand candidate Kompella Madhavi Latha by over 3.38 lakh votes, also sent out a message for the “two-bit goons who keep targeting my house”.

“To the two-bit goons who keep targeting my house: this does not scare me… be men enough to face me. Do not scurry away after throwing some ink or pelting a few stones,” he wrote.

Last year, his Delhi home was attacked twice – once in August, when two glass panels on a door were found broken and another in February, when stones were thrown and the nameplate was damaged.

In 2022, his convoy came under fire in Uttar Pradesh while the MP was travelling from Meerut to Delhi. Mr Owaisi, who had a close shave, had said that four shots were fired at his cavalcade. Later two men were arrested in the case.

The five-time Hyderabad MP stirred a huge controversy earlier this week as he expressed solidarity with war-torn Palestine while taking oath as an MP.

The mention triggered massive outrage and strong reactions from members of the treasury benches, prompting the Chair to expunge it.

However, Mr Owaisi defended his Palestine chant and said: “Other members are also saying different things. I said ‘Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine’. How is it wrong? Tell me the provision of the Constitution. You should also listen to what others said. I said what I had to. Read what Mahatma Gandhi had said about Palestine.”

Asked why he mentioned Palestine, Mr Owaisi clarified, “They are oppressed people”.

The Hyderabad MP could be disqualified for “demonstrating adherence to a foreign State, that is Palestine”, sources in the BJP said.

Union Minister and BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje wrote to the Home Minister’s office objecting to the speech and requested the pro tem Speaker to ask Mr Owaisi to take oath once again.

He said, “You all know what is happening to us, how the elected CM has been kept in jail and how he was arrested by CBI yesterday…We will definitely boycott the President’s address because this is not the President’s own statement, rather she reads the government’s statement. Vacation Judge Amitabh Rawat after taking note of all the submissions of both sides, allowed Arvind Kejriwal to be on CBI remand till June 29, 2024.

During the remand period, the court allowed Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, to meet him for 30 minutes and his lawyer to meet him every day for 30 minutes. The court has also allowed him to carry his prescribed medicines during the remand period.

PIL in SC against implementation of three new criminal laws

New Delhi: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Supreme Court against the implementation of the new criminal laws abolishing the colonial-era IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act.

It may be recalled that the top court in May had refused to entertain a similar PIL saying that the plea was liable to be dismissed.

The fresh plea, filed through advocate Sanjeev Malhotra, seeks directions to immediately constitute an expert committee to assess, identify the viability of the three criminal laws namely, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

It said, The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita retains most offences from the Indian Penal Code, 1860. It adds community service as a form of punishment. Sedition is no longer an offence. Instead, there is a new offence for acts endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita adds terrorism as an offence. “The PIL said the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, allows up to 15 days of police custody, which can be authorised in parts during the initial 40 or 60 days of the 60 or 90 days” period of judicial custody.

“This may lead to denial of bail for the entire period if the police have not exhausted the 15 days custody and the provision could be misused since people, particularly those hailing from marginalised backgrounds, may be subjected to extreme custodial violence,” it added.

Further, the plea said that there remains irregularity in the passing of laws in the Parliament as many members of Parliament were suspended with very less people participating in the passing of the three Bills.

It referred to the speech made by former Chief Justice of India NV Ramana expressing his concern regarding enacting laws without debate in the Parliament as it leaves ambiguity in legislation and leads to a lot of litigation.

“The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 retains most provisions of the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 including those on confessions, relevancy of facts, and burden of proof,” the PIL said.

In a press statement, the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Wednesday urged all Bar associations across the country to refrain from any form of agitation or protest against the introduction of new criminal laws and said that it will initiate discussions with the Union Government to convey the concerns of the legal fraternity.

Harish Rao slams Revanth’s allegations of BRS-BJP collusion

Harish Rao slams Revanth’s allegations of BRS-BJP collusion

Hyderabad: Senior BRS leader and former Minister T Harish Rao refuted Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s claims that the BRS and the BJP colluded in the recent Lok Sabha elections, dismissing them as baseless and inappropriate. He pointed out that the BRS outperformed the BJP in numerous Assembly constituencies, but the Congress had failed to do the same in the Chief Minister’s own constituency in Kodangal.

In a statement, Harish Rao said the BRS party scored majority votes in three of seven Assembly constituencies within the Medak Parliament constituency, including Dubbak, which is the constituency of BJP MP M Raghunandan Rao. “It is not appropriate for a Chief Minister to make such unfounded allegations,” he said.

The former Minister pointed out the inconsistency in Revanth Reddy‘s claims referring to the Congress party’s performance in Mahabubnagar constituency where the BJP won, despite having Congress MLAs in all seven Assembly constituencies. “Did the Congress divert votes to BJP there?” he asked.

Harish Rao also challenged Revanth Reddy over the BJP securing majority votes in the latter’s native village of Kondareddypalli as well as his Kodangal Assembly constituency during the Lok Sabha polls. “In Kodangal where the Chief Minister won with 32,000 votes in the Assembly elections, the Congress candidate secured only a 21,000 majority during the parliamentary elections. Does that mean he is in cahoots with the BJP?” he asked sarcastically. He also questioned BJP’s significant victory in Malkajigiri, represented by Revanth Reddy earlier, implying a possible Congress-BJP collusion there.

Harish Rao also said Revanth Reddy was aligning with the BJP and implementing their agenda while in the Congress. He cited instances where Revanth Reddy referred Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “Bade Bhai” and accused him of failing to condemn the Modi government on various issues. “The two national parties have come together to target Telangana’s regional power – BRS. It is a shame that Revanth Reddy said that BJP and BRS have colluded,” he remarked.
