Watch: RCB Star's Gravity-Defying Save In WPL Reminds Fans Of De Villiers

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers holds a special in the hearts of all Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) fans. De Villiers, who joined RCB in 2011, played with the franchise for over a decade before hanging his boots in 2021. Apart from his unmatched skills with the bat, which saw him pile plenty of runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the former South Africa batter was also a force to reckon with on the outfield. In 2018, de Villiers had pulled off a gravity-defying catch on the boundary ropes during a match against the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH).

On Thursday, RCB fans got to witness a similar moment as Australia all-rounder Georgia Wareham saved a certain six with her acrobatic effort, which had a hint of nostalgia to it.

Wareham’s effort reminded RCB fans of de Villiers’ stunning catch in 2018. The incident took place during the WPL 2024 match between RCB and Delhi Capitals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Here’s how Internet reacted:

Meanwhile, DC braved a sensational battering from Smriti Mandhana to hand a fighting RCB a 25-run defeat.

Mandhana fused power and grace to score 74 (43b, 10×4, 3×6) but other batters did not quite make it big as Royal Challengers, who were without indisposed star all-rounder Elysse Perry, ended up at 169 for nine.

The Capitals made a challenging 194 for five as Shafali Varma mustered a 31-ball 50 after they were asked to bat first.

But that total was under severe threat when Mandhana tore into the DC attack with panache.

After her dismissal, the task only grew steeper for RCB as left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen (3/21) produced an excellent spell. RCB lost six wickets for 18 runs at that stage.

This was RCB’s first defeat of the season.

Meta To Stop Paying Australian News Media

Meta To Stop Paying Australian News Media

Sydney:

Facebook parent Meta announced Friday it would no longer pay Australian media companies for news, prompting a government warning that the firm was in “dereliction” of past promises.

Extending a global retreat from news content, Meta said it would scrap the Facebook News tab in Australia and would not renew deals with news publishers worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

“People don’t come to Facebook for news and political content,” the firm said, explaining the move.

The decision had been on the cards, but will come as a hammer blow for Australian news outlets already struggling to stay afloat.

Meta had previously announced it would not renew content deals with news publishers in the United States, Britain, France and Germany.

The social media giant had been pushed into paying for news by governments hoping to level the media playing field and support struggling news firms.

Media companies around the world have seen a decline in revenues for years, with advertisers flocking to popular digital platforms like Google and Facebook to reach consumers.

Three years ago, Meta’s promise to pay news outlets prompted the Australian government to water down legislation governing online platforms and their relationships with the news media.

On Friday, Communications Minister Michelle Rowland expressed anger at Meta’s announcement and suggested the government may take retaliatory measures.

“Meta’s decision to no longer pay for news content in a number of jurisdictions represents a dereliction of its commitment to the sustainability of Australian news media,” Rowland said.

“The decision removes a significant source of revenue for Australian news media businesses. Australian news publishers deserve fair compensation for the content they provide.”

Rowland said the government would “work through all available options” to address the issue, in consultation with the country’s communications regulator.

The government was “committed to promoting a strong, sustainable and diverse media sector given its vital importance to our democracy and social cohesion”, she said.

JNU Student Groups Face Off Late Night Over Student Union Polls

JNU Student Groups Face Off Late Night Over Student Union Polls

The university administration is yet to issue a statement over the incident.

New Delhi:

Three students were injured at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed groups clashed on Thursday night, police said.

Videos shared by the student groups show chaos inside the university campus as a group of students rain blows and attack each other during a general body meeting for the upcoming students’ union polls.

An argument broke out between the groups over the selection of election committee members at the School of Languages last night after which the students began fighting with each other.

One of the videos shows a student bleeding from his head as he is led away from the group, while another shows a man tossing a cycle at a group of students. A few of them have admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after being injured, a JNU official told new agency PTI.

While the university administration is yet to issue a statement over the incident, the student groups have blamed each other for the clash. However, the police said they have not received any complaints in the matter.

Left-affiliated Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) and All India Students Association (AISA) alleged ABVP members disrupted the meeting and used casteist and sexist slurs to threaten students and heckle security guards.

“The VC office must acknowledge this act of vandalism and violence by the ABVP goons, whose faces are clearly visible and are seen in the videos circulating online. These perpetrators must be punished; they should be booked under relevant sections for unleashing such unprecedented violence,” the AISA said in a statement.

The right wing students’ group blamed JNU Students’ Union and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) president, Aishe Ghosh for launching a “vicious attack on students” and also targeting disabled students.

“The assault on students of the School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies represents a grave violation of the principles of education, tolerance, and human decency,” the ABVP said.

The following is a list of important questions with high marking from previous year Science paper.

Important questions from Science paper 2023:

Q) All the reproductive methods of living organisms are broadly categorised into two types : 1. Asexual reproduction, and 2. Sexual reproduction.
Asexual reproduction involves the participation of a single parent without the formation of gametes, fertilisation and transfer of genetic material. This method is a common means of rapidly increasing offsprings under favourable conditions.

  • (a)    Name the type of fission that occurs in Leishmania and Plasmodium.
  • (b)    Write one advantage of sexual mode of reproduction over asexual reproduction.
  • (c)    Give reasons why :
  • (i)    Colonies of yeast fail to multiply in water but multiply in sugar solution.
  • (ii)    Rhizopus individuals do not grow on a dry slice of bread.
  • (c) Name the filamentous structures a student could identify when he collected water from a pond that appeared dark green. How do these organisms multiply ? Explain.

Q) (a) An object is placed in front of a convex lens of focal length f. If the distance of the object from the lens is 2f, draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the image. Write the value of magnification
in this case.
(b) A student has focussed the image of a candle flame on a white screen using a convex lens. The situation is as given below :
Length of the flame = 2 cm
Focal length of the lens = 12 cm
Distance of the flame from the lens = 16 cm
If the flame is perpendicular to the principal axis of the lens, calculate the values of the following :
(i) Distance of the image from the lens
(ii) Length of the image formed

Q) (i) List three points of difference between nervous and hormonal mechanisms for control and coordination in animals.
(ii) How are auxins related with the bending of plant shoot towards unidirectional light ? Explain.

Q) The ability of a medium to refract light is expressed in terms of its optical density. Optical density has a definite connotation. It is not the same as mass density. On comparing two media, the one with the large refractive index is optically denser medium than the other. The other medium with a lower refractive index is optically rarer. Also the speed of light through a given medium is inversely proportional to its optical density.

  • (i) Determine the speed of light in diamond if the refractive index of diamond with respect to vacuum is 2.42. Speed of light in vacuum is 3×108 m/s.
  • (ii) Refractive indices of glass, water and carbon disulphide are 1.5, 1.33 and 1.62 respectively. If a ray of light is incident in these media at the same angle (say θ), then write the increasing order of the angle of refraction in these media. 1
  • (iii) (A) The speed of light in glass is 2×108 m/s and in water is 2.25×108 m/s.
