After Meeting Till 4 am, BJP May Name 100 Lok Sabha Candidates: Sources

PM Modi with Home Minister Amit Shah (File).

New Delhi:

The BJP is expected to release a first list of candidates – over 100 names, which will include heavyweights like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah – for the 2024 Lok Sabha election later today, after marathon overnight meetings in Delhi, including one led by the Prime Minister at his Delhi residence that began 11 pm Thursday and finished at 4 am Friday.

Sources have told NDTV the BJP’s strategy, as it bids for a third term, revolves around getting feedback on sitting MPs’ – including but not limited to discussions with grassroots-level workers and voters in their constituencies – and a tactical reshuffle to eliminate the anti-incumbency bias.

Sources also said last night the party intends to name a chunk of its candidates, not including those from National Democratic Alliance allies, well before poll dates are announced to ramp up pressure on its main (only) rival – the Congress-led INDIA bloc, which has still not finished seat-share deals.

Hindi Heartland, South Focus

NDTV was told the Thursday night-Friday morning meet would focus on candidates for the Hindi heartland states of UP, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan, as well as Mr Modi’s home state of Gujarat. Also in focus were the southern states of Kerala – where the BJP has traditionally been a non-entity – and Telangana, where it was routed by the Congress last year.

A decision for other states, including Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu, have been put on hold pending alliance talks with regional parties. In the latter two states the BJP is hoping to re-establish ties with the Akali Dal and the AIADMK, while in the former it must choose between the ruling YSR Congress Party and the Telugu Desam Party-Jana Sena alliance.

PM Modi, Amit Shah In First List?

In any case, the list is not due before noon, but it is likely Mr Modi will return to defend his seat in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, which has been a BJP bastion since 1991 (save a Congress win in 2004).

He claimed dominant wins here in 2014 and 2019, winning the first election by 3.7 lakh votes and the second by nearly 4.8 lakh. There was speculation the Prime Minister’s hat-trick bid could be challenged by the INDIA bloc, with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra a possible candidate.

The other possible candidate was Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, but that has been ruled out since the Janata Dal (United) boss – a founding member of INDIA – has now re-allied with the BJP.

Ms Gandhi Vadra’s (long-awaited) electoral debut – there was talk she would run in the 2019 election too – has not been confirmed yet, and the stepping down of Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi from the party’s Raebareli stronghold has opened up a possible perfect unveiling op for the party.

Amit Shah, meanwhile, could be fielded from Gujarat’s Gandhinagar.

The BJP has held the seat – which has sent stalwarts like LK Advani and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the Lok Sabha – since 1989. Mr Shah won this seat in 2019 – he recorded a dominant win, beating the Congress’ Chaturainh Chavda by over 5.5 lakh votes.

Other Big Names?

Amit Shah’s cabinet colleagues – Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia – may contest from Lucknow and Guna-Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh, respectively.

Like Gandhinagar, the UP capital is a BJP stronghold.

Mr Vajpayee held this seat from 1991 to 2004 and Rajnath Singh has held it since 2014, seeing off the Congress’ Rita Bahugana Joshi and the Samajwadi Party’s Poonam Sinha.

Mr Scindia’s expected seat in Madhya Pradesh is seen as sure thing since it is his family citadel. The Scindia royal family has won this seat 14 times since the first election in 1952.

Jyotiraditya Scindia held this seat between 2002 (a bypoll necessitated by his father Madhavrao Scindia’s death) and 2014, but that was as a member of the Congress. After his controversial cross-over, he surrendered the seat and was instead nominated to a Rajya Sabha seat from the state.

In 2019 the seat was won by the BJP’s Krishna Pal Yadav.

Others who may be named in the first list are former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal from Assam’s Dibrugarh, a seat he won in 2004 (when with the Asom Gana Parishad).

Across Assam the BJP will contest 11 seats, leaving three for its allies – the Asom Gana Parishad and United People’s Party Liberal, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Thursday.

No Pragya Thakur, Shivraj Chouhan Returns?

There are likely to be some surprises too, with buzz fiery Bhopal MP Pragya Thakur will not return to defend her seat, which was offered to ex-Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Mr Chouhan – sacked after the BJP’s Assembly poll win last year, despite his welfare measures, particularly the ‘Laadli Behna’ scheme, ensuring the party retained the state – reportedly refused the seat, and said he wants to contest from his home district of Vidisha.

The former Chief Minister is a five-time winner from the seat – from 1991 to 2004 – that has also been a BJP fortress; the saffron party has held Vidisha since 1989.

Room For Allies

The meeting also likely saw talks about leaving six seats in politically key Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha, for regional allies like the Apna Dal and the Rashtriya Lok Dal of Jayant Chaudhary, which the BJP reportedly won over from INDIA despite their January agreement.

Overall, the plan is to name at least 50 per cent of its candidates by March 10. In 2019 the party did the same thing; it revealed 164 candidates on March 21, weeks before dates were announced.

BRS leaders head to Medigadda to counter Kaleshwaram Project propaganda

Hyderabad:  Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders on Friday left for Medigadda barrage as part of their ‘Chalo Medigadda’ to counter what they call “propaganda” by the Congress government against the Kaleshwaram project.

Barring BRS President and former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, all top party leaders including MLAs, MLCs, and MPs left for Medigadda from Telangana Bhavan, the party headquarters in Hyderabad.

Led by BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao, the leaders left in buses for Medigadda in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.

Some of the piers of the barrage sank in October last year, prompting the Centre to send a team of National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA). The issue took a political colour with both Congress and BJP targeting the BRS government and claiming that sinking of piers and flaws in design and execution as pointed out by NDSA in its report proved their allegations of corruption in the project.

After the Congress party came to power in December, it ordered a judicial probe and also an inquiry by the Vigilance Department into Medigadda.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy along with ministers and MLAs of the ruling Congress party, AIMIM and CPI had visited the barrage on February 13. He had invited all the parties to join the visit but both BRS and BJP stayed away.

After the visit, the Chief Minister alleged that around Rs 94,000 crore public money was wasted on the project as Medigadda barrage became useless with the sinking of piers within three years of its construction.

The Congress government also claimed that problems also started in Annaram and Sundilla barrages, exposing faulty design and poor quality of construction.

The BRS, however, dismissed the allegations of the Congress and accused it of running a campaign to malign the previous government.

Before leaving for Medigadda, K. T. Rama Rao reiterated that their visit is aimed at explaining to the people the benefits of the Kaleshwaram project and to demand the government to immediately undertake repairs so that farmers don’t suffer.

KTR alleged that the attitude of the Congress government shows that politics is more important for it than farmers.

“By not undertaking repairs, Congress has hatched conspiracy to see that the barrage washes out in the coming rainy season,” he said

The BRS leader advised Congress not to make farmers suffer for its anger towards BRS. “We are demanding that the government take up repairs of the damaged piers so that farmers don’t have to suffer. We have already said that the government can order any inquiry to punish those found guilty,” he said.

Senior BRS leader and former Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy alleged that unable to see the benefits of Kaleshwaram project, the Congress was running a misinformation campaign.

“Medigadda is only a part of the big project. Out of 84 piers of Medigadda, only three have suffered damage. It may be due to technical problems. It happens in projects all over the world. The government should rectify the defects and take action but it should not politicise the issue,” he said.

Srinivas Reddy said through ‘Chalo Medigadda’ they want to remind the government of its responsibility.

Party’s senior leader and former irrigation minister T. Harish Rao, through a powerpoint presentation, will explain various features of the project and the benefits it accrued to the state.

Lok Sabha Polls Countdown Begins, BJP Works On Poll Calculus With Allies

Lok Sabha Polls Countdown Begins, BJP Works On Poll Calculus With Allies

PM Modi with Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP boss JP Nadda (File).

New Delhi:

With weeks before the Lok Sabha election dates are announced, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is busy settling seat-share deals with its NDA partners or deciding, in some cases, to go it alone.

The BJP’s top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and party boss JP Nadda, held a grueling midnight meet Thursday to whittle down a long-list of candidates.

READ | After Meeting Till 4 am, BJP May Name Over 100 Candidates: Sources

A list of names for 100 seats – including Mr Modi for Varanasi and Mr Shah for Gandhinagar – is expected later today, sources have said, as the BJP looks to ramp up pressure on rivals INDIA by releasing candidates even as the opposition group struggles to close seat-share deals.

Haryana

Sources told NDTV the party has opted for the solo route in Haryana, where the JJP of Dushyant Chautala will be sidelined. Mr Chautala helped the BJP retain the state after the 2019 Assembly election, in which the saffron party emerged the single-largest but fell six seats short of majority.

The JJP did contest the 2019 general election; it fielded candidates in seven seats in a deal with the Aam Aadmi Party, but was routed. The JJP-AAP combine failed to win any seat.

In fact, the BJP swept the state, winning all 10 seats and more than 58 per cent of the votes

Jharkhand

Over in Jharkhand the BJP will give one seat – possibly Giridh – to the All Jharkhand Students Union. The AJSU contested that seat five years ago and scripted an easy win, with Chandra Prakash Choudhary polling over 2.5 lakh votes more than the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Jagamath Mahto.

Jharkhand sends 14 MPs to the Lok Sabha and the BJP holds 12 of these seats.

Uttar Pradesh

In the politically key state of Uttar Pradesh – which sends 80 MPs to the Lower House, by far the most of any state – sources said the BJP has decided to keep the lion’s share of seats; this is understandable given Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party has dominated UP electoral politics.

Only six will be left for NDA members; the Apna Dal (Sonelal) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal will get two each, with one each for the Nishad Party and Om Prakash Rajbhar’s Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party.

The BJP won 62 of UP’s 80 seats in the 2019 election and a staggering 71 five years earlier. It also routed its rivals in state polls, winning 255 of 403 seats in 2022 and 312 in 2017.

What is, perhaps, an interesting point, and certainly one that will have been noted by the INDIA opposition bloc, is the declining absolute return for the BJP over the last two central and state polls.

That, though, must be offset by a marginal increase in overall vote-share in each instance.

Assam

And in Assam, the BJP has agreed to leave three of the northeastern state’s 14 seats to its allies.

The Asom Gana Parishad will get two and the United People’s Party Liberal will get the third.

READ | BJP To Contest 11 LS Seats In Assam, 3 For Allies: Himanta Sarma

The AGP and UPPL received the same share last time but did not win any seats, while the BJP secured nine of the 10 seats it contested.

Challenges Elsewhere

No decision has been reached yet for other states.

This includes Bihar, where political equations have seen a sea change after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) dumped INDIA and re-aligned with the BJP. The JDU brought with it old NDA allies like ex-Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular).

The BJP must also factor in existing partners, like rival factions of the Lok Janshakti Party.

Like UP, Bihar is a key state since it sends 40 MPs to Parliament; only Maharashtra (another state where the BJP is still working out how to proceed) and Bengal have more Lok Sabha seats.

In 2019 the BJP won all 17 seats it contested, while its key ally – Nitish Kumar’s JDU – claimed 16 of 17 and the LJP (then united) added a handy six seats to the final score.

In Maharashtra the BJP is in final talks with the Shiv Sena and NCP factions led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, respectively. The difficulty here is to ensure that Mr Shinde and Mr Pawar are happy with their share, since their combined strength props up its state government.

In the last election the BJP was allied with the Shiv Sena, which was then an unbroken outfit led by Uddhav Thackeray. The BJP fielded candidates in 25 seats and won 23, while the Sena had the remaining tickets and secured 18 of them, giving the Prime Minister’s party another sweep.

BJP’s 2024 Election Gameplan

Sources have told NDTV the BJP’s strategy, as it bids for a third term, revolves around getting feedback on sitting MPs’ – including but not limited to discussions with grassroots-level workers and voters in their constituencies – and a tactical reshuffle to eliminate the anti-incumbency bias.

The party has also said several MPs from Other Backward Classes. or OBCs, are expected to contest again. In 2019, the BJP saw 85 of its OBC MP candidates emerge victorious.

Rupee gains 4 paise to 82.85 against US dollar-Telangana Today

Forex traders noted that while a positive sentiment in the equity markets boosted the local currency, the higher level of the dollar index introduced a negative bias.

Rupee gains 4 paise to 82.85 against US dollar

Mumbai: The rupee appreciated 4 paise to 82.85 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday on the back of robust GDP data and massive inflow of foreign funds in the domestic capital markets.

A positive sentiment in the equity markets also supported the local currency, though the higher level of the dollar index came as a negative bias, forex traders said.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the local currency opened at 82.86 and gained slightly to 82.85 against the greenback, registering an increase of 4 paise from its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee settled 2 paise higher at 82.89 against the US dollar.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, declined 0.08 per cent to 104.01.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.34 per cent to USD 82.19 per barrel.

In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 414.5 points or 0.57 per cent higher at 72,914.80 points. The broader NSE Nifty soared 135.65 points or 0.62 per cent to 22,118.45 points.

The government data released on Thursday showed India’s economic growth accelerated to 8.4 per cent in the October-December quarter of this fiscal, mainly due to double-digit growth in manufacturing and a good showing by mining & quarrying and construction sectors.

Another data showed the growth of eight key infrastructure sectors slowed to a 15-month low of 3.6 per cent in January on account of poor performance of sectors like refinery products, fertiliser, steel, and electricity.

The government’s fiscal deficit at Rs 11 lakh crore at January end touched 63.6 per cent of the revised annual target. In the corresponding period last year, the fiscal deficit or gap between the expenditure and revenue was 67.8 per cent of the Revised Estimates (RE) of the Union Budget 2022-23.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Thursday as they bought shares worth Rs 3,568.11 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data.
