Thane:

The driver of the cab that fatally knocked down former Intel India country head Avtar Saini in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai, has told the police that he lost control over the vehicle as he dozed off because he was driving all night, an official said on Friday.

The police have registered a case against the driver, Rishikesh Khade (23) following the incident that occurred around 5.50 am on Wednesday on the Palm Beach Road in Navi Mumbai’s Nerul area.

The speeding cab hit Saini while he was cycling. The cab hit Saini’s bicycle from behind and Khade then tried to escape from the spot with the bicycle’s frame wedged under the front wheels of the cab. Saini’s companions rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, the police said.

“During his interrogation, Khade told the police that he dozed off as he was driving all night, due to which he lost control over the cab that knocked down Saini’s bicycle,” an official of NRI police station said.

Khade was booked under various Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections, including 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by doing an act rashly or negligently so as to endanger human life) and 304-A (causing death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide), and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

“But the accused has not been arrested so far as the maximum imprisonment for sections applied against him is below seven years,” the police official said.

Saini, a resident of suburban Chembur in Mumbai, was credited with working on the Intel 386 and 486 microprocessors. He also went on to lead the design of the company’s Pentium processor.

The police said they are waiting for Saini’s relatives to claim his body as they reside abroad and are on their way to India for his last rites.

Watch: Students clash at JNU as ABVP, Left-backed groups disagree on poll committees

New Delhi: Some students were injured in a clash between two groups in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here, said police on Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday night between the members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed groups, reportedly after disagreements over the appointment of election committee members at the School of Languages. The altercation grew uncontrollable and led to the clash.

Police have received three medico-legal case reports of students, Anwesha Rai, Shaurya and Madhurima, regarding the injuries from Safdarjung hospital.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rohit Meena, said, “PCR calls were received at around 1:15 a.m. regarding a scuffle between students at GBM in JNU. Multiple complaints have been received in this regard and the allegations are being verified.”

A video circulating on social media platform X depicts a person hitting others with a stick, while another video shows someone hurling a bicycle at them.

Other videos from the scene purportedly display individuals being attacked by a group, despite efforts by university security personnel to intervene and stop them.

Meanwhile, ABVP in a statement said that a disturbing incident unfolded within the premises of JNU, involving a group of individuals led by the self-proclaimed JNUSU president, Aishe Ghosh, along with Danish Ali and Swati Singh, among others.

“The group launched a vicious attack on students affiliated with the Bachelors and Masters programs at the School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies. The assailants, reportedly associated with Ghosh and her cohorts, unleashed a wave of violence against the students, demonstrating an appalling disregard for human safety and dignity. Shockingly, even physically handicapped students were not spared from the brutality inflicted upon them,” it said.

“The assault on students of the School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies represents a grave violation of the principles of education, tolerance, and human decency. As the JNU community grapples with the aftermath of this reprehensible act, it is imperative that justice be served and measures be implemented to safeguard the welfare of all members within the academic fraternity,” it added.

Guterres condemns killing of over 100 around food convoy in Gaza

United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday condemned the killing of more than 100 people in incidents in northern Gaza and repeated his demands for a ceasefire, his Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

On the day Gaza’s Health Ministry announced that the death toll crossed the 30,000 mark since Israel’s attacks began on October 8, 104 people were killed and more than 700 injured in the incidents around a food convoy in the Gaza City area, according to the Palestine news agency, Wafa.

The agency said that according to medical sources, Israeli troops had opened fire with heavy machine guns at people waiting for trucks laden with humanitarian assistance for distribution.

“The Secretary-General condemns the incident today in northern Gaza in which more than a hundred people were reportedly killed or injured while seeking life-saving aid,” Dujarric said.

He added that Guterres “is appalled by the tragic human toll of the conflict in Gaza, in which more than 30,000 people have now reportedly been killed and more than 70,000 injured. Tragically, an unknown number of people lie under rubble”.

His statement did not name Israel in the attack, and Dujarric explained to reporters that the UN did not as yet have direct knowledge of what happened, but he said that acts of violence caused the incident.

UN Human Rights High Commissioner Volker Turk called the killings in Gaza, “carnage”.

“There appear to be no bounds to — no words to capture — the horrors that are unfolding before our eyes in Gaza,” he said in Geneva at a meeting on Occupied Palestine Territories.

While denouncing the 10/7 Hamas attack on Israel as “profoundly traumatising and totally unjustifiable,” he also condemned “the brutality of the Israeli response” which resulted in “the unprecedented level of killing and maiming of civilians in Gaza, including UN staff and journalists”.

Turk said, “Since early October, over 100,000 people have been killed or wounded. Let me repeat that: about one in every 20 children, women, and men, are now dead or wounded.”

When Israel launched its counterattack for the Hamas assault, it ordered the people in northern Gaza to move south, which most did while several Palestinians were trapped in the northern areas where Israeli troops have launched ground, air and sea attacks.

Meanwhile talking to reporters in Washington, US President Joe Biden conceded that the Thursday incidents complicated the negotiations for freeing hostages held by Hamas.

But he refused to take a stand on the incidents, saying, “We’re checking that out right now. But there’s two competing versions of what happened. I don’t have an answer yet.”

Israel said that its forces opened fire on a crowd that advanced on them menacingly, but asserted that dozens were killed in a melee by being trampled or run over by trucks.

Stung by growing opposition to Biden’s support for Israel — manifest this week by more than 100,000 protest votes in the Democratic Party primary in Michigan — the US was recalibrating its position, renewing calls for a humanitarian ceasefire and asking Israel to be mindful of civilians.

ABC News reported that according to administration officials, the US was considering airdropping aid to Gaza.

The latest mass killings has raised the tension in region with Saudi Arabia and Jordan issuing strong condemnations.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and they agreed “to press for the protection of civilians consistent with international humanitarian law,” the US State Department said.

They agreed to continue “efforts to secure the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas and establish a humanitarian pause in the conflict in Gaza,” the department added.

Green-Hazlewood Script History With Partnership In 1st Test vs New Zealand

Star all-rounder Cameron Green was involved in a hilarious incident on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test between New Zealand and Australia at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Friday. It happened in the third over of the morning session after Australia had resumed their innings at 279/9. New Zealand pacer Matt Henry bowled an in-swinger to Josh Hazlewood, who caressed the ball through midwicket. While Green and Hazlewood could’ve stolen two runs, the former sent the latter back even before he completed a single.

Both Green and Hazlewood had crossed, but the all-rounder called the pacer back to his position as he was eager to regain the strike for the first ball of the next over.

The incident, which took place on the final ball of th 88th over, left the umpires and opposition captain Tim Southee baffled. The commentators, on the other hand, saw the funny side of Green’s antics.

Meanwhile, Green and Josh Hazlewood scripted history on Friday as they combined to register Australia’s highest partnership for the tenth wicket against New Zealand, as well as the fourth-best overall by an Australian pair.

The pair tormented New Zealand’s bowling attack during the morning session of the second day in Wellington, putting up 116 for the final wicket with ease, shattering Jason Gillespie and Glenn McGrath’s previous record of 114 runs in Brisbane in 2004.

The partnership was just Australia’s sixth of 100 runs or more for the tenth wicket in red-ball cricket, and it helped the reigning World Test Championship winners achieve a large score of 383 in their first innings following a difficult opening day at Basin Reserve.

Green’s unbeaten performance of 174 encouraged Australia, with the young all-rounder playing a patient game to begin before reaching his second Test century in the penultimate over of the day, and then taking a more attacking strategy with Hazlewood on Friday.

The duo batted wisely when necessary, with Green, in particular, using his power to smash anything short from the Kiwis, frustrating the hosts and registering the fourth-best partnership of all time for the 10th wicket by an Australian team.

Green’s hundred was just the second time he has scored triple digits for Australia in Test cricket, topping his previous best of 114 against India in Ahmedabad last year.

Dhaka: At least 43 people were killed in a deadly fire that broke out at a six-storey commercial building on Baily Road in Dhaka late on Thursday night.

Of the deceased, 33 died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and 10 in Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen.

He added that more than 22 people were severely burned are battling for their lives.

Around 75 people, including 42 in an unconscious state, were rescued from Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall.

The Fire Service says the Green Cozy Cottage houses Kacchi Bhai biriyani shop, an outlet of retailer Illiyeen, and several other shops.

Live videos shared by people on Facebook showed a fire engulfing the building while onlookers gathered outside.

Locals and firefighters were seen rescuing the people trapped inside the building in some of the videos.

The fire that broke out around 9:50 p.m. was brought under control after two hours.

Mohammad Rashed, a rescue worker of the Fire Service, exited through the back of the building with five other workers. All of them escaped out of the building with air jumping bags.

A security guard in an adjacent building recounted his experience saying, “There was no fire at first, we only saw smoke. When I went to the ground floor of the building to inspect the matter I heard a gas cylinder burst and the fire spread to the upper floors of the building.”

“The fire spread so fast that the Fire service was struggling to rescue people. Some got down from the building by climbing a rope, but many were injured in this way,” he added.

Around 10-15 people have been taken to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for sustaining injuries from the fire.

Three platoons of paramilitary, Bangladesh Ansar and one of the specially trained Ansar Guard Battalion have been deployed to help in the fire and rescue operation working together with the Fire service.

Santo Das, rescued from the building at around 11:40 p.m., told IANS that the fire might have originated from a cylinder blast. He works at a restaurant on the third floor of the building.

At least 19 people have been rescued so far, Fire Service officials said. Nearly 12 units of the firefighters worked to douse the fire and carry out rescue operations.

Canada University To Remove Vending Machines Over Facial Recognition Tech

A university in Canada is set to remove a series of smart vending machines from its campus following concerns over the use of facial recognition technology in secret. According to The Guardian, the controversy unfolded when a student captured a photo of the snack dispense displaying an error message – Invenda.Vending.FacialRecognition.App.exe – on the screen. There was no prior indication that the machine was using the technology, nor that a camera was monitoring student movement and purchases. Users were also not asked permission to scan or analyse their faces.

“We wouldn’t have known if it weren’t for the application error. There’s no warning here,” River Stanley, the University of Waterloo student who reported on the discovery for the university’s newspaper, said, as per the outlet

However, Invenda, the company that produces the machines, defended the technology. It claimed that the technology is compliant with the European Union’s privacy standards. Notably, the company advertises its use of “demographic detection software”, which it says can determine the gender and age of customers. It is unclear if the use of technology meets Canada’s privacy standards.

Separately, the director of technology services for Adaria Vending Services defended the technology, saying that “an individual person cannot be identified using the technology in the machines”.

“What’s most important to understand is that the machines do not take or store any photos or images, and an individual person cannot be identified using the technology in the machines,” the statement said. “The technology acts as a motion sensor that detects faces, so the machine knows when to activate the purchasing interface – never taking or storing images of customers,” it added.

The University of Waterloo, on the other hand, pledged in a statement to remove the Invenda machines “as soon as possible”. It also said that it has already “asked that the software be disabled”.

In the meantime, students at the Ontario university responded by covering the hole that they believe houses the camera with gum and paper.

Meanwhile, in a similar incident in April, the national retailer Canadian Tire ran afoul of privacy laws in British Columbia after it used facial recognition technology without notifying customers. Back then, the government’s privacy commissioner said that even if the stores had obtained permission, the company failed to show a reasonable purpose for collecting facial information.
