Mumbai: Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty rallied more than one-and-a-half per cent to hit their lifetime highs on Friday helped by impressive GDP data and fresh foreign fund inflows.

The Nifty climbed 355.95 points or 1.62 per cent to settle at a new closing high of 22,338.75. During the day, it soared 370.5 points or 1.68 per cent to reach its intra-day record peak of 22,353.30. A rally in global markets and auto sales numbers added to the positive momentum in the equity markets, analysts said.

Among the Sensex firms, Tata Steel jumped over 6 per cent while JSW Steel climbed more than 4 per cent. Larsen & Toubro, Titan, Maruti, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank and Tata Motors were the other major gainers. HCL Technologies, Infosys and Tech Mahindra were the laggards.

India’s economy grew by better-than-expected 8.4 per cent in the final three months of 2023 — the fastest pace in one-and-a-half years.

The growth rate in October-December was higher than 7.6 per cent in the previous three years, and it helped take the estimate for the current fiscal (April 2023 to March 2024) to 7.6 per cent, according to the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Thursday.

India’s manufacturing sector growth climbed to a five-month high in February amid a sharper uptick in factory production and sales, supported by both domestic and external demand, a monthly survey said on Friday.

The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose from 56.5 in January to 56.9 in February, pointing to the strongest improvement in the health of the sector since September 2023.

“Better-than-expected Q3 FY24 GDP and ease in US inflation added buoyancy in both domestic and global markets. As the general election draws closer, stellar economic growth data raised confidence among investors for a pre-election rally.

“On the global front, in-line US personal consumption expenditure data and benign Euro zone inflation will influence global central banks to take a dovish view on interest rates,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.

In the broader market, the BSE midcap gauge jumped 0.89 per cent and smallcap index climbed 0.68 per cent. Among indices, metal zoomed 3.84 per cent, capital goods went up by 2.49 per cent, bankex climbed 2.48 per cent, auto advanced 2.23 per cent, energy (2.14 per cent), oil & gas (2.14 per cent), commodities (2.12 per cent) and industrials (1.91 per cent).

IT and teck were the laggards. A total of 2,387 advanced while 1,451 declined and 109 remained unchanged. In Asian markets, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled with gains. European markets were trading in positive territory. The US markets ended in the green on Thursday.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned buyers on Thursday as they bought equities worth Rs 3,568.11 crore, according to exchange data. The BSE benchmark climbed 195.42 points or 0.27 per cent to settle at 72,500.30 on Thursday.

The Nifty gained 31.65 points or 0.14 per cent to 21,982.80. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.82 per cent to USD 82.58 a barrel. Leading stock exchanges BSE and NSE will conduct a special trading session in the equity and equity derivative segments on Saturday to check their preparedness to handle major disruption or failure at the primary site.

The special live trading session will have intra-day switch over from Primary Site (PR) to Disaster Recovery (DR) site. The exchanges said there will be two sessions — the first from 9:15 am to 10 am on the PR, and the second from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm on the DR site.

“Trading members are requested to note that the exchange will conduct a special live trading session with intraday switch over from Primary Site (PR) to Disaster Recovery Site (DR) on Saturday, March 2, in equity and equity derivatives segments,” BSE and NSE said in separate circulars.

US Man Who Cut Neighbour's Trees For Better View Stares At $1 Million Fine

US Man Who Cut Neighbour's Trees For Better View Stares At $1 Million Fine

The case of the tree cutting went viral last June.

A homeowner in Kinnelon, New Jersey, pleaded guilty on Monday to having trees cut down on his neighbour’s property without a permit. Grant Haber reportedly ordered the removal of 32 trees, allegedly to improve his view of the New York City skyline, according to the Daily Record.

Haber was initially facing fines of $1,000 per tree, but as part of a plea deal, he agreed to pay a total of $13,194, and the number of trees considered was reduced to 18. This translates to a fine of $700 per tree, as per the news report.

The borough’s prosecutor has indicated that Haber could face additional costs exceeding $1 million, including the planting of replacement trees. A restitution hearing is scheduled for April 19th to determine the final amount.

Haber’s co-defendant, Ronald Fallas, who cut down the trees, also pleaded guilty, admitting he mistakenly relied on Haber to obtain permission and permits. Charges against another co-defendant were dismissed with a warning.

The neighbour whose trees were cut, Samih Shinway, was at the hearing as well.

“I’m never going to be 100% satisfied,” he said afterward. “I always use the analogy that if you hire someone to put a hit out on somebody, they are just as liable as the person who did it.”

Last June, the trees’ case gained widespread attention when a thread was posted on X by a user named @SamAsIAm, providing a detailed account of the incident.

“A friend who is a municipal arborist just called to tell me about a guy who cut down 32 big mature trees on his neighbour’s NJ property to get a better view of NYC,” user @SamAsIAm wrote.

Police excesses against BRS workers: KTR lodges strong protest with SP

Hyderabad: BRS working president K T Rama Rao on Friday took serious note of the third degree measures being resorted to by the police against BRS workers in Mulugu district for raising ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans.

On his way to Medigadda, he met the party workers who were subjected to police excesses at Parkal and assured them that the party leadership would stand by them in stress and strain.

He spoke to the District Superintendent of Police over phone and lodged a strong protest against the local police officials for their partisan attitude in the incident.

Taking exception to the false cases being foisted against BRS workers in the district, he made it clear that the party would not remain a silent spectator if the party men were being summoned to police stations without valid reason and subjected to harassment.

He said police officials were harassing BRS workers, giving in to the pressure of Congress leaders and that it would not augur well for the department, which was expected to be impartial in discharging duties.

Stating that political power would not remain permanently with any one political party, he wanted the police to act well within the legal framework.

Assuring all support to party workers where ever the police tried to implicate them false cases, he said the Parkal episode should not repeat anywhere in the State.

Otherwise, the BRS would approach the courts and human rights organisations seeking action against the police harassing the BRS workers to placate the political bosses. He said the party men need not lose their heart with such incidents.

The party leadership had faced many such experiences during the Statehood movement. Local leaders informed Rama Rao that the police continued their crackdown against the BRS workers even after the suspension of the police officer who was instrumental for physical torture of a BRS worker in Parkal.

Google Removes Indian Matrimony Apps From Playstore Over Fee Dispute

Google Removes Indian Matrimony Apps From Playstore Over Fee Dispute

Google began removing the apps of 10 companies in India on Friday, including some popular matrimony apps such as Bharat Matrimony, in a dispute over service fee payments, potentially sparking a showdown with startup firms.

The dispute centres on efforts by some Indian startups to stop Google from imposing a fee of 11% to 26% on in-app payments, after the country’s antitrust authorities ordered it to dismantle an earlier system of charging 15% to 30%.

But Google effectively received a go-ahead to charge the fee or remove apps after two court decisions in January and February, one by the Supreme Court, not to give any relief to startups.

Matrimony.com dating apps Bharat Matrimony, Christian Matrimony, Muslim Matrimony and Jodii were deleted on Friday, company founder Murugavel Janakiraman said, describing the move as a “dark day of Indian Internet”.

“Our apps are getting deleted one by one”.

The unit of Alphabet Inc has sent notices of Play Store violations to Indian companies Matrimony.com, which runs the app BharatMatrimony, and Info Edge, which runs a similar app, Jeevansathi.

Both companies are reviewing the notice and will consider next steps, their executives told Reuters.

Shares of Matrimony.com fell as much as 2.7% after the Reuters report, before paring losses, while Info Edge dropped 1.5%.

Info Edge founder Sanjeev Bikhchandani said it had cleared all pending Google invoices in a timely manner and was compliant with its policies.

In a blog post, Google said 10 Indian companies had chosen for an extended period of time not to pay for the “immense value they receive on Google Play”. It did not identify the firms.

“For years, no court or regulator has denied Google Play’s right to charge,” the company said on Friday, adding that the Supreme Court on February 9 also “refused to interfere” with its right to do so.

Google’s app removal could anger the Indian startup community which has been protesting many of the US giant’s practices for years.

The firm, which denies any wrongdoing, dominates the Indian market as 94% share of phones are based on its Android platform.

Google says its fee supports investments in the app store and the Android mobile operating system, ensuring free distribution, and covering developer tools and analytic services.

Just 3% of the more than 200,000 Indian developers who use the Google Play platform are required to pay any service fee, it added.

BJP's Mandarin Wish For MK Stalin Amid 'China Flag On Indian Rocket' Ad Row

BJP's Mandarin Wish For MK Stalin Amid 'China Flag On Indian Rocket' Ad Row

New Delhi:

The Bharatiya Janata Party took a jibe at Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday by extending birthday wishes to him in Mandarin. The gesture comes amid an escalating controversy surrounding an advertisement related to the new ISRO complex, which prominently featured a Chinese flag.

The tweet from the Tamil Nadu BJP read, “On behalf of Tamil Nadu BJP, here’s wishing our Honourable CM Thiru MK Stalin a happy birthday in his favourite language! May he live a long and healthy life!”

A row broke out after a newspaper advertisement, commissioned by Tamil Nadu’s Animal Husbandry Minister Anitha Radhakrishnan, showcased a rocket with a conspicuous Chinese flag. The ad celebrated the establishment of a second launch pad for ISRO in Kulasekarapattinam, Thoothukudi district, and was intended to highlight the DMK’s role in bringing this crucial project to the state.

Amid the uproar, Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi, representing the DMK, acknowledged the error in the advertisement, attributing it to the artwork designer. She defended her party, stating that the issue did not warrant the intense backlash it received. The controversial poster featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister MK Stalin side by side, with a rocket in the background.

Fisheries Minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan, responsible for the contentious advertisement, also that the inclusion of the Chinese flag was a result of a mistake by the designer and asserted that the DMK had no ulterior motives.

“A small mistake happened in the advertisement. We have no other intention. We have only love for India in our hearts,” stated Mr. Radhakrishnan, emphasizing the DMK’s commitment to a united India without allowing room for conflicts based on caste or religion.

4 Injured In Explosion At Bengaluru Cafe, Forensics Team At Site

4 Injured In Explosion At Bengaluru's Rameshwaram Cafe, Bomb Squad At Site

Four people were injured in the explosion at the cafe in Bengaluru

Bengaluru:

Four people were injured in an explosion at a cafe in Bengaluru’s Kundalahalli today, the police said. The police are trying to find out what caused the explosion at The Rameshwaram Cafe, a popular restaurant in the neighbourhood. A team of the anti-terror National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reached the cafe.

Three of the injured people are employees of the cafe, while the fourth is a customer, the police said.

The police have not ruled out any angle, sources said. A bomb squad and a forensics team are at the cafe.

There was no fire after the explosion, sources said, adding it doesn’t look like a cooking gas cylinder explosion.

BJP’s Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya in a post on X, formerly Twitter, said he spoke to the cafe owner about what could have caused the explosion that left four people injured.

“Just spoke to Rameshwaram Cafe founder Sri Nagaraj about the blast in his restaurant. He informed me that the blast occurred because of a bag that was left by a customer and not any cylinder explosion. One of their employees is injured. It seems to be a clear case of bomb blast. Bengaluru demands clear answers from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah,” Mr Surya said.

The four injured people have been admitted to Brookfield Hospital.

US blocks Security Council motion on Gaza aid convoy carnage

The United States has once again backed Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, blocking a UN Security Council statement that would have blamed the Israeli forces for killing Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid in the besieged strip.

The statement, which was drafted by Algeria, was supported by 14 of the 15 council members on Thursday, Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian UN ambassador, told reporters.

Algeria called for a UNSC emergency meeting behind closed doors after Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid near al-Nabulsi roundabout in Gaza City earlier on Thursday, killing at least 112 people and injuring hundreds of others.

The US defended its blocking of the motion, citing contradictory reports and a lack of all facts.

“We don’t have all the facts on the ground – that’s the problem,” US deputy ambassador Robert Wood told reporters.

The Israeli military claimed that civilians had attacked the aid trucks and scores of people had been trampled. The claim, however, was disputed by witness accounts.

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas described the Israeli claims as a “trivial narrative” aimed at justifying the “horrific massacre.”

Washington has repeatedly vetoed UN resolutions that call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, with the latest time being on Tuesday.

Washington, instead, has been actively pushing for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza to facilitate the release of Israeli captives held by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

Israel waged its genocidal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Washington has since supplied the regime with more than 10,000 tons of military equipment.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 30,035 Palestinians and injured 70,457 others.

The Tel Aviv regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.
