Global condemnation pours in after deadly Israeli attack on Gaza aid convoy

Global condemnation has poured in following a recent deadly attack by the Israeli occupation forces on Palestinian civilians seeking food aid in the besieged Gaza Strip, which has been under the illegal regime’s incessant bombardment for the past five months.

At least 112 people were killed and more than 750 others wounded on Thursday as the Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians who had surrounded a convoy of 38 aid trucks in Gaza, with the Palestinian health ministry calling the incident a “massacre.”

The latest Israeli crime comes as NGOs and UN experts have on several occasions voiced fears of famine in the besieged territory, which is completely cut off from aid by the occupation since October last year.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday expressed “shock” and “seriously” condemned the attack on Palestinians who had been struggling for aid in Gaza.

“China is shocked by this incident and strongly condemns it,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said. “We express our grief for the victims and our sympathies for the injured.”

Mao also called on the occupying entity to “immediately” implement a ceasefire and protect the safety of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

“China urges the relevant parties, especially Israel, to cease fire and end the fighting immediately, earnestly protect civilians’ safety, ensure that humanitarian aid can enter, and avoid an even more serious humanitarian disaster,” the spokeswoman added.

In a post on X social media platform, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his “strongest condemnation of these shootings and called for truth, justice, and respect for international law.”

Saudi Arabia strongly censured what it called the “targeting” of unarmed civilians, while Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates also issued condemnations.

Qatar warned that Israel’s “disregard for Palestinian blood… (will) pave the way for an expanding cycle of violence.”

Turkey said the incident “is evidence that (Israel) aims consciously and collectively to destroy the Palestinian people.”

Spain’s foreign minister said the “unacceptable” events underline the “urgency of a ceasefire,” while European Union foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell expressed horror at “yet another carnage among civilians in Gaza desperate for humanitarian aid.”

Israel waged its genocidal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 30,035 Palestinians and injured 70,457 others.

The Tel Aviv regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

"Doesn't Go To Waste": Ganguly's Clear Take On Which Format Suits Sarfaraz

Impressed with his positive start to life in Test cricket, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has said Sarfaraz Khan‘s game is more suited to red-ball cricket. Sarfaraz, who made his debut in the third Test against England in Rajkot, scored half-centuries in both innings. He became only the fourth India batter to score twin half-centuries in his Test debut after Sunil Gavaskar, Dilawar Hussain and Shreyas Iyer. The batter scored a truck load of runs in the domestic cricket for Mumbai, especially the Ranji Trohpy.

Ganguly was delighted to see Sarfaraz being rewarded for his years of toil in India’s premiere First Class competition.

“Sarfaraz is more of a five-day player. His game is more suited for that. The amount of runs he scored in domestic cricket is phenomenal. And as they say if you score runs in first class cricket it doesn’t go to waste and that’s what happened to Sarfaraz,” Ganguly told RevSportz.

Sarfaraz has scored 4056 runs in 47 FC matches at an average of 68.74 while smashing 14 hundreds and 13 half-centuries.

In the Rajkot Test, Sarafarz scored 62 runs in the first innings before being run-out following a mix-up with centurion Ravindra Jadeja. He then followed it up with a 68 in the second innings to help India win the match.

While the batter on managed 14 runs in the 4th Test, he will have a chance to end the series on a high, with India already leading 3-1 with one game left to play.

The fifth and final Test starts March 7 in Dharamsala, with India set to welcome star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested in the previous Test, which India won by five wickets in Ranchi.

KL Rahul will miss out again after he was forced out of the previous three due to a quad injury he picked up in the opener.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (capt), Jasprit Bumrah (vice-capt), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Devdutt Padikkal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.

BRS terms Jal Shakti Minister’s adviser’s allegations concoction of lies

BRS terms Jal Shakti Minister’s adviser’s allegations concoction of lies

Hyderabad: The BRS strongly denounced the allegations made by Vedire Sriram, adviser to union Jal Shakti Minister, terming them a concoction of lies and half-truths with malicious political motives. The party accused Sriram of spreading misinformation ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Telangana.

In response to Sriram’s claims, the BRS issued a detailed point-by-point rebuttal on Friday. The party refuted the assertion that the BRS government failed to construct a barrage at Tummidihatti, clarifying that the proposal was opposed by the then Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis despite repeated requests from his Telangana counterpart K Chandrashekhar Rao. Subsequently, project re-engineering was initiated.

The BRS highlighted that the Central Water Commission indicated only 165 TMC would be available at Tummidihatti, including 63 TMC allocated for upper riparian States, prompting its shifting to Medigadda where 284 TMC was available and approved by the CWC.

The BRS questioned why the Centre did not correct the mistakes done by the previous UPA regime in Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and failed to refer the issue to KWDT-II till 2023, despite the BRS government seeking for fresh water allocations in 2014 itself. The party demanded to know how the State government can seek 200 TMC allocations for Telangana projects when the issue was under purview of KWDT-II which was delayed by the Centre.

The BRS pointed out the State government’s Supreme Court approach after waiting over one and a half years for the BJP-led Central government to respond. The party questioned the Centre’s three-year delay in issuing Terms of Reference after the State withdrew the case from the Apex Court. The party referred to CWC and KRMB meeting minutes, along with letters since 2015, seeking a 50-50 allocation of Krishna River water between Telugu States.

The BRS held N Chandrababu Naidu responsible for misusing influence to impede the process. Rejecting the NDSA’s argument on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme’s faulty design, the BRS clarified that the designs followed manuals and codes from CWC and other Central agencies. The party called for a detailed geological investigation into the sagging of piers in eight blocks of Medigadda.

The BRS blamed the Centre for delayed investment and BCR clearances, despite submitting all documents based on scientific calculations. The party dismissed claims of non-cooperation with the NDSA and made it clear that all documents sought, were submitted by the State government. The party asserted that the relocation of the barrage from Devadula to Tupakulagudem and limiting water levels to 80 m until Chhattisgarh completes 50 acres of land acquisition, was to minimise tribal habitation submergence.

In ‘The Wealth Report 2024,’ Knight Frank has observed that nearly 14 percent of residential portfolio of India’s Ultra-High-Net-Worth-Individuals (UHNWIs) is allocated outside the country. UHNWIs are individuals with net worth of over USD 30 million.

"Pity Us": Deadly Scenes As Desperate Gazans Rush Aid Trucks

'Pity Us': Deadly Scenes As Desperate Gazans Rush Aid Trucks

According to the UNRWA, just over 2,300 aid trucks entered the Gaza Strip in February

Palestinian Territories:

Thousands of Palestinians flocked to an aid distribution point early Thursday, desperate for food amid Gaza’s looming famine, only to be met with lethal chaos including live fire by Israeli troops.

By mid-afternoon the Hamas-run health ministry said more than 100 people were reported dead in the grisly incident which underscored worsening shortages in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory.

“There were crowds of people, but the occupation (forces) kept firing towards us,” one young man told AFP while lying on the dirty, crowded floor at Kamal Adwan Hospital waiting for treatment.

He was among those wounded in the chaos. But there were conflicting reports on what exactly unfolded in the hours before dawn.

Ali Awad Ashqir, who had gone to get some flour for his starving family, had been waiting for two hours when violence erupted.

“At approximately 4:00 am the trucks began to arrive. The moment they arrived, the occupation army fired artillery shells and guns,” he told AFP.

“I was hit by a bullet in the left foot and taken to Al-Shifa Hospital. I was later discharged because my injuries were moderate.”

Hossam Abu Safiya, director at Kamal Adwan Hospital, said all the casualties were hit by “bullets and shrapnel from occupation forces”.

Ashraf al-Qudra, spokesman for Gaza’s health ministry, denounced what he called a “massacre” at Gaza City’s Nabulsi roundabout, saying 112 people were killed and 760 wounded.

He blamed Israeli troops, and Israeli sources confirmed to AFP that the Israeli forces at the scene did open fire, having perceived the crowds near the trucks as a “threat”.

But a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said many of the dead were crushed by the trucks themselves.

“Aid trucks were overwhelmed by people trying to loot and drivers ploughed into the crowd of people, ultimately killing tens of people,” said the spokesman, Avi Hyman.

– Gazans storm trucks –

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an Israeli army spokesman, said on Thursday night that “thousands of Gazans” swarmed the trucks bearing aid from Egypt, “violently pushing and even trampling other Gazans to death”.

Israeli tanks escorting fired warning shots and tried to retreat, Hagari said, denying the army had turned its tanks on civilians.

“We did not fire at the humanitarian convoy — neither from the air nor from the ground,” he said.

Outside Kamal Adwan Hospital, four women in headscarves wailed while clutching at the lifeless body of a bearded man wrapped in white cloth.

At Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, doctors were “unable to deal” with the flood of casualties “as a result of weak medical and human capacities”, Qudra said.

Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas after it carried out an unprecedented attack on October 7 on southern Israel.

The Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of around 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures.

Umm Hamdan Abu Sultan, a displaced woman waiting for aid near the scene, said: “They are the terrorists, not us.”

“Our children are dying of hunger, we go to get a bag of flour to feed our children and they fire at them.”

Israel’s withering military response to the October 7 attack has now killed at least 30,035 people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry, which does not specify how many fighters are included in the toll.

The offensive has caused widespread devastation in Gaza and severe shortages of food, water and medicine.

‘Under siege’

For months, aid workers have warned of an increasingly desperate situation for Gazan civilians, and on Monday an official from the UN humanitarian office OCHA said widespread starvation was “almost inevitable”.

UN estimates show that 2.2 million people — the vast majority of Gaza’s population — are threatened with famine, particularly in the north where destruction, fighting and looting make the delivery of food almost impossible.

According to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, just over 2,300 aid trucks entered the Gaza Strip in February, a drop of about 50 percent compared with January.

That is an average of well below 100 trucks per day, down from around 500 that were entering daily before the war.

It was precisely that scarcity that drove crowds to rush the trucks at Nabulsi roundabout on Thursday, a witness told AFP.

Aerial footage distributed by the Israeli military showed large groups swarming a line of moving trucks on foot.

“Trucks full of aid came too close to some army tanks that were in the area and the crowd, thousands of people, just stomp the trucks,” the witness said, declining to be named for safety reasons.

“The soldiers fired at the crowd as people came too close to the tanks.”

Thursday’s incident spurred a heated exchange at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, where Palestinian ambassador Ibrahim Mohammad Khraishi confronted his Israeli counterpart about the reported casualties.

“Are these human shields? Are these Hamas combatants?” Khraishi asked.

At Kamal Adwan hospital, a Palestinian woman said: “We are under siege. Take pity on us. Ramadan is coming soon. People should look at us. Pity us.”

Gruha Jyothi Scheme: Discoms starts issuing ‘Zero Bills’

Hyderabad: With the State government’s Gruha Jyothi scheme of providing up to 200 units of free power being officially launched, the Discoms have started handing out ‘zero electricity bills’ to beneficiaries on Friday. Several consumers across the State received ‘zero’ bills who consumed electricity within their average usage.

Panchayat Raj Minister D Anasuya formally launched the zero billing initiative in Kothaguda and Gangaram mandals in Mahabubabad on Friday.

The Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) meter readers were seen issuing zero bills to beneficiaries in Quthbullapur, Yousufguda, Vidya Nagar, Saroornagar and other places in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits on Friday.

The beneficiaries residing in districts such as Sangareddy, Mahabubabad, Khammam, Warangal, Karimnagar, Mulugu, Bhupalpally and Wanaparthy too received zero bills.

A beneficiary, T Prabhu Singh, of Yousufguda, who received a Rs.489 bill for consuming 106 units was issued a zero bill. Similarly, P Bashetty of Kakatiya Nagar colony of Quthbullapur division was issued a zero bill for consuming 65 units.

As per the Gruha Jyothi scheme guidelines, all the consumers consuming average electricity units less than 200 (average will be taken based on the usage in 2022-23) would get a zero electricity bill under this scheme. Even those receiving non-zero bills remain beneficiaries of the scheme, with the requirement to pay only for consumption beyond their entitled units.

According to power officials, each eligible household whose consumption for a particular month is up to 200 units will receive a zero bill for that month. If a person has more than one meter, the scheme would be limited only to one meter, they said. “Discoms will send the details to the government by 20th of every month, after which the government will release the subsidy amount,” officials stated.

Action would be taken against anyone found using the benefits for non-domestic purposes under the Electricity Act and the Indian Penal Code, the officials cautioned.

As per government order, all applications received through the ‘Praja Palana’ and other channels, and which are linked to Aadhar cards will be covered under the scheme. Consumers who are eligible for free power but receive bills from March can approach the local Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other concerned municipal bodies to apply for the scheme as well.

If on verification the said consumer is found eligible, a revised bill will be issued as per the provisions of the Gruha Jyothi scheme, with regard to consumers applying for the scheme in case they did not do earlier.

The State government has allocated Rs.2,418 crore for the scheme in the Vote on Account budget for 2024-25.
