Senior cleric calls for strengthened national, Islamic unity

Tehran’s interim Friday prayers leader Hujjat al-Islam Mohammad Hassan Abu Torabi Fard said in this week’s Friday Prayers sermon in Tehran that “A nation that has unity is a symbol of determination, will, hope, and cause.”

He also said that national unity and Islamic unity are two definitive strategies for consolidating the pillars of national might and turning threats into opportunities.

“This unity is the result of understanding, dialogue, interaction originating in rationality and ethics and moving in the direction of the law,” the senior cleric added.

“In the social teachings of Islam, the unity and cohesion in the society is insisted upon more than any other principle,” he continued.

Aboutorabifard further said that in Islamic teachings, people’s votes and democracy in ruling the country are emphasized. “The close and intertwined links between citizens and the administration of the country and the formation of political institutions and systems is one of the most important pillars of religious democracy and national might.”

"Taqleef Hogi": Kapil Reveals Few Won't Like BCCI's Domestic Cricket Step

“A few players will suffer, but let it be,” said legendary former India captain Kapil Dev on Friday as he backed the BCCI’s decision to terminate central contracts for lack of commitment to domestic cricket, calling it a much-needed step to protect marquee first-class events like the Ranji Trophy. Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were on Wednesday excluded from the BCCI’s central contracts after ignoring the board’s diktat to play in the Ranji Trophy. The decision evoked mixed reactions with some former players like Kirti Azad and Irfan Pathan backing the out-of-favour duo.

Kapil refrained from taking names but said the BCCI’s decision to assert the importance of domestic cricket was long overdue.

“Yes, few players will suffer, kuch logon ko taqleef hogi, hone do lekin desh se badhkar koi nahi hai (some people will feel hurt but let it be because nobody is bigger than the country). Well done,” he said.

“I congratulate the BCCI for taking the much needed step to protect the status of domestic cricket. I was sad to see domestic cricket being given the skip by players once they had established themselves in international cricket,” the captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning side observed in his statement.

The BCCI, while announcing the central contracts, urged the players to give due importance to domestic competitions.

The 25-year-old Kishan did not turn up for Jharkhand throughout the team’s campaign in Ranji Trophy despite not being on national duty after leaving the tour of South Africa in December citing personal reasons. He instead focussed on preparing for the IPL next month for his franchise Mumbai Indians.

Iyer, on the other hand, did not make himself available for Mumbai’s Ranji quarterfinal against Baroda after being excluded from the Indian team after the second Test against England. He, however, has been picked for Mumbai’s Ranji semifinal against Tamil Nadu starting March 2.

“It was high time the message was given and this strong step by the BCCI will go a long way in restoring the prestige of domestic cricket,” he added.

Kapil asserted that it was the duty of established stars to play domestic cricket as they owe their success to their respective states.

“I have always believed in the process of international players making themselves available to play for their respective states. It helps them extend their support to domestic players. Also it is a nice way to pay back for the services rendered by the state association in grooming a player,” he said.

Kapil also expressed his gratitude to the BCCI for enhancing the pension of former cricketers, saying it has come as a major relief to families of several yesteryear players.

In 2022, the board had announced a hike in the monthly pensions of former cricketers — both men and women.

Former first-class men’s cricketers, who earlier got Rs 15,000 per month are now getting Rs 30,000, while former Test players, who got Rs 37,500, are now getting Rs 60,000.

Women international players, who received Rs 30,000 prior to the revision are now receiving Rs 52,500, while first-class cricketers who retired before 2003 and were getting Rs 22,500 are now getting Rs 45,000.

“I am also happy that the BCCI has increased the pension amount of the players. This was a much needed boost to those whose family depends on the pension received,” added Kapil.

PM Modi to visit Kashmir Valley on March 7, first since Article 370 abrogation

Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the Kashmir Valley on March 7, his first visit to the Valley since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. The last time the Prime Minister visited Kashmir was in February 2019.

During his visit to Kashmir on March 7, the Prime Minister is expected to announce the score of developmental projects and also interact with the beneficiaries of various national schemes and programmes in the Valley.

Sources said that the main venue of the Prime Minister’s visit will be the Bakshi Stadium and not the convention centre by the banks of the Dal Lake.

They said that Bakshi Stadium has been chosen as the venue because a large number of people are expected to attend PM Modi’s programme. A large number of people including those from the civil society and various local organisations have exhibited interest in attending the Prime Minister’s programme in Srinagar city.

PM Modi will visit Kashmir at a time when separatists called Bandhs and strikes are a thing of the past. Stone pelting that had assumed menacing proportions before the abrogation of Article 370 has completely vanished. Educational institutions have functioned normally and a record number of over 2 crore tourists visited Kashmir last year.

Businesses have been running normally and the common man has been living a peaceful and fearless life after the abrogation of Article 370.

It is because of the historical decision to abrogate Article 370 and integrate J&K completely with the rest of the country that the Prime Minister has fixed a symbolic target of 370 seats for the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Even the political adversaries of the BJP admit that J&K has witnessed peace and normalcy after Article 370 was abrogated. However, the BJP had been looking forward to a mega public rally to be addressed by PM Modi in south Kashmir Anantnag district that would announce the party’s poll campaign in Kashmir.

There is still no official word on whether the Prime Minister addresses a rally in Anantnag or not.

There is, however, no doubt that the people look forward to the March 7 visit as they expect a magnanimous development package and a probable announcement by the Prime Minister on the regularisation of thousands of ad-hoc and contractual employees working in various government departments.

Earlier, PM Modi visited Jammu on February 20. He inaugurated and also laid the foundation of developmental projects worth Rs 32,000 including the 48.5 Km extension of Railway service from Banihal town to Sangaldan and the inauguration of AIIMS in Vijaypur in Samba district.

The Prime Minister addressed a mega public gathering in Jammu and also interacted with the beneficiaries of various national flagship programmes in J&K.

The Prime minister expressed his satisfaction at the success of his Jammu visit and also appreciated the efforts made by L-G Manoj Sinha in ensuring that the benefits of the national developmental programmes reach the common man.

A large number of the Pahari community came out on February 20 to thank Modi for granting ST status to them.

The demand for ST status by the Pahari community in J&K was pending for more than 50 years and despite promises no previous state government had granted this status to them

United States, United Kingdom renew attacks on Yemen

The United States and the United Kingdom targeted areas in Yemen’s Al Hudaydah province in their new round of aggression.

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian Resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

Yemeni Armed Forces have said that they won’t stop their attacks until unrelenting Israeli ground and aerial offensives in Gaza, which have killed at least 27,948 people and wounded another 67,459 individuals, come to an end.

The United States and Britain in December announced a military coalition to target Yemen in support of Israel.

Avraham Gil, the 19-year-old son of an Israeli diplomat, was assaulted by another inmate in a Miami-Dade County jail holding cell on Wednesday, February 28th, 2024, according to the New York Post.

Gil had been previously arrested on January 27th for allegedly running over a Sunny Isles Beach police officer with his motorcycle. He was initially granted house arrest but was required to return to jail for a new mugshot. While waiting in the cell, he reportedly engaged in a conversation about sausages with another inmate, 32-year-old Blake Elvis Ermus. According to local news reports, Ermus attacked Gil, leading to charges of felony battery by a detainee.

“Was having a conversation with the defendant (Ermus) about the ingredients of the sausages. At some point, the defendant approached the victim and punched him multiple times,” an incident report obtained by the NYPost read.

Gil’s new mugshot shows him composed, contrasting his earlier booking photo, which captured him emotional and disheveled. Prosecutors had requested a house arrest due to concerns over Gil’s driving behavior. He still faces pending felony charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

The reasons for the assault and its possible connection to the reported conversation are currently being investigated.

Gil, from Aventura, gained widespread attention when his legal team unsuccessfully tried to assert diplomatic immunity after he was arrested in late January. His father is employed at the Israeli consulate in Miami.

Modi Government Plans To Induct 25 Private Sector Specialists At Key Posts

Modi Government Plans To Induct 25 Private Sector Specialists In Key Posts

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by PM Modi has approved the move

New Delhi:

Twenty-five private sector specialists will soon be joining key posts in the Centre as part of the Modi government’s ambitious plan to infuse such talents to further improve ease of governance, officials said today.

They said the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the appointment of three joint secretaries and 22 directors/deputy secretaries in different central government departments.

Usually, the posts of joint secretaries, directors, and deputy secretaries are held by the officers of all-India services – the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Service (IFoS) – and other Group A services, among others.

The latest induction is being done through the lateral entry mode – referred to as the appointment of private sector specialists in government departments – aimed at bringing fresh talent and perspective into the government, the officials said.

Under the lateral entry scheme, which was launched in 2018, recruitments are made at the level of joint secretary, director and deputy secretary. The officers at these levels play an important role in policy-making.

The officers who come through the lateral entry process become part and parcel of the government system.

The Personnel Ministry had in June 2018 invited applications against 10 joint secretary-rank posts through the lateral entry mode for the first time. The recruitment for these posts was done by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

The Commission had again in October 2021 recommended 31 candidates for the appointment as joint secretaries (3), directors (19), and deputy secretaries (9) in different central government departments, the officials quoted above said.

A total of 38 private sector specialists – including 10 joint secretaries and 28 directors/deputy secretaries – have joined the government so far, they said.

At present, there are 33 such specialists, including eight joint secretaries, 16 directors and nine deputy secretaries, are working in key government departments, they said, adding two joint secretaries completed their full three-year tenure.

Under the lateral entry scheme, recruitments are made against the posts requiring domain specialisations either from the private sector or from the state government/ autonomous bodies/public sector undertakings etc.
