Bangladesh building fire kills 46, injures dozens

A massive fire in Bangladesh that raged through a six-storey building home to restaurants where many families with children were dining has killed at least 46 people and injured dozens, the health minister said on Friday.

Fire authorities said a gas leak or a stove could have caused Thursday’s blaze in the capital, which spread quickly after breaking out in a biryani restaurant, and was only reined in following two hours of effort by 13 units of firefighters.

Hospitals are treating 22 people with burn wounds, Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen told reporters.

“All 22 people … are in critical condition,” Sen, himself a well-known physician, said after a visit to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. “We are trying our best to save their lives.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock and sorrow at the incident, ordering swift treatment for the injured.

Doctors said most of the dead were killed by suffocation with others dying as they jumped off the building, which also houses some clothing and mobile telephone shops.

The fire could have originated from a gas leak or stove, said Brigadier General Main Uddin, a top fire service official.

“It was a dangerous building with gas cylinders on every floor, even on the stairs,” he told Reuters, adding that it had a single staircase, lacking ventilation, an emergency exit and other safety features.

The government has set up a five-member panel to investigate the incident.

Fires are common in densely populated Dhaka, where many new buildings have sprung up, many lacking adequate safety measures.

Fires and explosions have resulted from faulty gas cylinders, air conditioners and poor electrical wiring.

In July 2021, many children were among the 54 people killed at a food processing factory outside Dhaka, while at least 70

people were killed in a February 2019 fire that engulfed a centuries-old precinct.

Abu Dhabi: Ireland after beating Afghanistan by six wickets in the only Test on Saturday became the sixth-fastest team to clinch their inaugural Test victory eclipsing the accomplishments of established Test-playing nations such as India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and New Zealand.

Ireland’s route to this historic victory transpired quickly over just eight matches, spanning six years since their introduction into the red-ball format in 2018. This was despite their relative inexperience in Test cricket. Australia’s first Test victory, against bitter rivals England, came in 1877 in their inaugural match, setting the standard for quick success. England and Pakistan won their second Test match, however India had to go through a longer process until they won their first Test match against England in their 25th encounter.

The fact that South Africa won their first Test match after playing in 12 matches and New Zealand achieved their first victory in the 45th match highlights the different paths that cricketing nations have taken to succeed in the esteemed format. Facing a modest target of 111 runs for victory, Ireland stumbled early, finding themselves at a precarious 13 for 3 in their fourth innings.

However, led by captain Andy Balbirnie’s unbeaten 58, supported by Lorcan Tucker’s 27 not out, they weathered the storm and overcame the Afghan challenge, sparking tears of joy among the traveling Irish fans as Tucker struck the historic winning run. While Balbirnie’s masterful innings guided Ireland to victory on a challenging surface, it was their pace bowling trio of Barry McCarthy (3-48), Mark Adair (3-56), and Craig Young (3-24) that set the stage for the triumph.

Combining forces, they dismantled the Afghan batting lineup, sharing nine crucial wickets in the third innings, restricting Afghanistan to a modest total of 218. Adair’s pivotal breakthroughs, McCarthy’s precision, and Young’s incisive bowling laid the foundation for Ireland’s success, limiting Afghanistan’s lead to just 110 runs. Despite a stubborn lower-order resistance, Ireland’s disciplined bowling ensured they were tasked with a manageable target, one they pursued with determination and focus.

"Everyone Should Fall In Place": Ex-India Star On Kishan-Iyer Contract Row

Former India batter Manoj Tiwary, who recently announced his retirement from all formats of the game, has made an interesting revelation on players faking injuries to skip domestic cricket. Tiwary remarks comes after BCCI announced the central contracts for the Indian men’s cricket team. Star cricketers Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer did not find a place in the central contract list, reportedly over their non-participations in Ranji Trophy. BCCI had warned the centrally contracted players not to skip domestic games, adding that the move could lead to “sever repercussions”.

However, Kishan didn’t turn up for Jharkhand’s Ranji matches, while Iyer also skipper Mumbai’s quarterfinal tie, despite being cleared fit to play.

Kishan was seen training with Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya in Baroda, while Iyer reportedly took part in Kolkata Knight Riders’ training camp to prepare for the IPL.

Tiwary feels that while the BCCI could’ve avoided terminating the contracts, the decision has sent a clear and loud message to the other players.

“See, removing players from central contracts could have been avoided, though I don’t know what conversation they had in between. But now it is an open message to all that if players are available, they have to play domestic cricket, and that is how you have to protect this tournament. That is what I also said in my tweet. Now everyone should fall in place, not one or two individuals. The rule has to be equal for all. Many other things need to be looked at, and in time, I’ll write a letter to BCCI to highlight those areas,” said Tiwary in a conversation with Sports Now.

Tiwary suggested that young and established players have faked injuries in the past to avoid playing domestic games, and even if they feature, there conversations are mainly regarding the IPL.

“I have seen youngsters and established players speak only about IPL during domestic matches. Even in the zonal matches, when I used to play, their discussions are entirely based on IPL, and that I have seen from close quarters. The conversations, topics and issues mostly surrounded IPL only,” he added.

Tiwary feels players do prioritise IPL over domestic cricket due to the money factor.

“It is pretty natural once IPL contracts are given before the Ranji, it does affect someone – when you get 5 cr or 7 cr, players start thinking in their subconsciousness. So when a Ranji match comes, they try to avoid the last bit of effort required to dive and save a boundary that might have been crucial for the domestic team. So most of the time, those have been left alone, avoided, and that is a fact. Then they try to find a reason, maybe a niggle. Earlier, what used to happen? Players turned up for their sides even while carrying an injury, but now they are trying to sit out the game and avoid the next couple of games. So these things are happening, and it is a fact. But I do not blame the players outright; we are all equally guilty of it,” he concluded.

"Beyond Alarming": Rishi Sunak's Impassioned Plea To Save Democracy In UK

'Beyond Alarming': Rishi Sunak's Impassioned Plea To Save British Democracy

London:

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has issued an impassioned plea for Britain to protect its democracy as he warned that extremist forces were out to tear the country apart and undermine its multi-faith identity.

Referencing his own Hindu beliefs, the British Indian leader on Friday stressed that the enduring values of the UK are about embracing migrants of all faiths and ethnicities and urged protesters to ensure peaceful demonstrations are not hijacked by extremist forces.

“Immigrants who have come here have integrated and contributed. They have helped write the latest chapter in our island story. They have done this without being required to give up their identity,” said Rishi Sunak in a speech outside 10 Downing Street.

“You can be a practising Hindu and a proud Briton as I am, or a devout Muslim and a patriotic citizen as so many are, or a committed Jewish person and the heart of your local community, and all underpinned by the tolerance of our established, Christian church,” he said.

“But I fear that our great achievement in building the world’s most successful multi-ethnic, multi faith democracy is being deliberately undermined. There are forces here at home trying to tear us apart,” he added.

He was speaking soon after what he characterised as the “beyond alarming” win in a bye-election on Thursday of a controversial politician, George Galloway, in Greater Manchester following a campaign dominated by the divisions of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

He said on too many occasions recently, the streets of Britain had been hijacked by small groups who are hostile to British values and have no respect for its democratic traditions.

“Islamist extremists and the far right feed off and embolden each other. They are equally desperate to pretend that their violence is somehow justified when actually these groups are two sides of the same extremist coin… both loathe the pluralist, modern country we are,” he said.

The British Prime Minister stressed that both these groups of extremists were spreading the poison of extremism with the aim of draining Britain’s confidence.

He added: “No country is perfect, but I am enormously proud of the good that our country has done.”

“I stand here as our country’s first non-white Prime Minister, leading the most diverse government in our country’s history to tell people of all races, all faiths and all backgrounds it is not the colour of your skin, the God you believe in or where you were born, that will determine your success but just your own hard work and endeavour.”

Rishi Sunak reiterated his support for a new protocol agreed with the police forces of the country earlier this week to take action against violent activities that threaten the personal security of members of Parliament and also any violence during serial protests taking place in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict. He said threats of violence and intimidation are alien to the British way of doing things and must be resisted at all times.

“I love this country. My family and I owe it so much. The time has now come for us all to stand together to combat the forces of division and beat this poison. We must face down the extremists who would tear us apart,” he urged.

The body was discovered by local residents this morning.

Faridabad:

The dead body of a newborn boy was found impaled and stuck on a grill in the quiet Haryana village of Ajronda late Friday night. According to the police, a person threw the newborn over a wall before it got skewered on the spiked fence.

Another Hezbollah force martyred in clashes with Zionists

On Friday, Hezbollah said that it had targeted a gathering of the Israeli regime’s forces with drones.

The Lebanese Resistance movement has been conducting regular raids since early October against the Israeli regime’s military position in retaliation for the occupying regime’s offensives against Gaza and southern Lebanon.

Israel waged its brutal war on besieged Gaza on October 7 after Hamas carried out an unprecedented operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

So far, the Tel Aviv regime has killed nearly 30,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured at least 68,883 others.

Israel has imposed a complete siege on the densely populated territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

4 killed, 3 injured in Israeli strikes on Lebanese village

According to military sources, Israel carried out four air strikes on Ramyah and three on the villages of Aita al-Shaab and Jabal Balat, destroying five houses and damaging 15 others.

The sources, who spoke anonymously, said that the casualties were caused by several Israeli raids on the village of Ramyah in the Bent Jbeil district in southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Israel fired about 40 shells on nine towns and villages in southern Lebanon.

For its part, Hezbollah said its forces shot down an Israeli drone in southwest Lebanon.

The military sources told Xinhua that the Lebanese army, in cooperation with UNIFIL peacekeepers, carried out a sweeping operation and found an Israeli drone in the Labouneh area.

The sources said the drone, carrying leaflets, had been transported to one of the Lebanese military centers.

Hezbollah added that its forces on Friday attacked a gathering of Israeli soldiers in the vicinity of the Jal al-Alam site and the sites of Ruwaisat al-Alam, al-Manara, al-Baghdadi, Ramim, and Hadab al-Bustan.
