If BJP Is Not Defeated, Tribals Will Be Uprooted: Jharkhand Chief Minister

Ranchi:

Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren on Saturday alleged that the BJP would loot tribal land and uproot them from forests and coal-bearing areas, if the party is not defeated in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

He said that the BJP government at the Centre attempted to amend various laws that protect tribal rights but the coalition dispensation in the state would be protesting against such attempts.

The CM was delivering his concluding remarks in the state assembly, amid the walk-out of BJP legislators from the House.

The seven-day budget session of the assembly, which started from February 23, was adjourned sine die by Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto. As many as four bills, including an International University Bill, 2024, were passed on the concluding day of the session.

“This budget session highlighted the achievements of the government in past four years. A budget of Rs 1,28,900 crore was passed for the fiscal 2024-25 and the government set a target to make Jharkhand a Rs 10 lakh crore economy by 2029-30,” Mahto said.

The chief minister said that the “BJP government has made amendments in the forest right Act, under which the power of gram sabha has been snatched. Similarly, an attempt is being made to amend the Coal Bearing Areas (Acquisition and Development) Act and Chotanagpur Tenancy Act”.

“The Centre has planned to strategically drive out tribals from forest, coal-bearing areas and other places through the amendments. If BJP is not defeated in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, tribals will be uprooted from their land,” the CM claimed.

He urged the ruling alliance legislators to make people aware about BJP’s intention.

Soren said that former chief minister Hemant Soren had understood the strategy of the BJP.

“So, he was put in jail on land issue, while his name is not there anywhere,” the CM claimed.

He said the coalition government has worked to strengthen the education, social and economic system of the state so that “roti, kapda and makaan could be ensured for everyone”.

Time to make cancer a notifiable disease: Experts

New Delhi: Emphasising the critical challenges and the government’s concerted efforts to combat cancer, the experts on Saturday said that it’s time to make it a notifiable disease so that accurate incidence and effective follow-up can be assured.

Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Indrani Kaushal, said the government is seized of the enormity of the situation, citing the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study that has projected 15.33 lakh new cancer cases per year and a mortality rate of about 8 lakh per year.

She highlighted the issue while addressing the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) Roundtable for the Eastern Region, held under the aegis of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

Kaushal further mentioned that Odisha is among the top 12 states that have been contributing to the cancer incidence tally of the country. As per experts, 85 per cent of districts in the four Eastern states lack comprehensive cancer care centres.

Only 20 per cent of cancer patients in India are able to access radiotherapy, which is an important treatment tool.

Raj Gore, co-lead of the FICCI Task Force on Cancer Care and CEO, Healthcare Global Enterprises Limited (HCG), highlighted the acute shortage of comprehensive cancer care centres in the country, with less than 30 per cent of districts in India having access to such facilities.

“Our task is cut out, and the magnitude of the problem is far greater than many realise,” stated Gore. “Our focus should not only be on raising awareness and prevention but also on ensuring better patient outcomes through timely and complete treatment of patients,” he added.

In addition, the experts mentioned that prevention and awareness at the grassroots level need to be enhanced along with implementing teaching programmes for Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and ensuring district hospitals are equipped with necessary diagnostic tools like endoscopes and HPV screening facilities.

Driver Was Watching Cricket: Minister On Andhra Train Crash That Killed 14

Driver Was 'Watching Cricket On Phone': Minister On 2023 Andhra Train Accident That Killed 14

14 killed, 50 injured in Andhra train accident.

New Delhi:

The driver and the assistant driver of one of the two passenger trains that collided leading to death of 14 passengers on October 29, 2023 were watching a cricket match on phone, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday while highlighting the cause of the accident.

The Rayagada Passenger train hit the Visakhapatnam Palasa train from behind at 7 pm that day on the Howrah-Chennai line in Kantakapalli in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. Over 50 passengers were injured.

Mr Vaishnaw referred to the Andhra train accident while talking about new safety measures that Indian Railways has been working on.

“The recent case in Andhra Pradesh happened because both the loco pilot and co-pilot were distracted by the cricket match which was going on. Now we are installing systems which can detect any such distraction and make sure that the pilots and the assistant pilots are fully focussed on running the train,” Mr Vaishnaw told PTI Videos.

He added, “We will continue to put our focus on safety. We try to find out the root cause of every incident and we come up with a solution so that it is not repeated.” While the probe report conducted by the Commissioners of Railway Safety (CRS) is yet to be made public, a preliminary railway probe, a day after the accident, had held the driver and the assistant driver of Rayagada Passenger train responsible for the collision as it passed two defective auto signals violating norms. Both crew members were killed in the accident.

Hezbollah arrests 'Dutch armed group': Paper

Hezbollah has arrested a Dutch armed group in a suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut amid efforts by foreign intelligence agencies to gather information leading to assassination of the resistance movement’s members, paper says.

Lebanon’s Al Akhbar daily carried the report on Saturday, saying that the arrest had taken place last Wednesday.

It described the arrestees as a six-member military detail in possession of military-grade arms, ammunition, and equipment.

The paper cited sources as saying that the group had claimed to be members of the Dutch armed forces.

They alleged to have been sent to Lebanon to purportedly simulate evacuation of Dutch nationals.

The Dutch government has claimed to be wary of exacerbation of current crossfire between Hezbollah and the Israeli regime, which started after the regime began taking the Gaza Strip under a genocidal war on October 7.

According to Lebanese journalist Hasan Illaik, however, the armed group did not coordinate the alleged simulation operation with the Dutch Embassy.

“It was also discovered that they launched their operation from Kaslik,” a coastal town north of Beirut, “rather than from the Embassy or a place affiliated with the Embassy,” he added.

“Dutch ambassador to Lebanon quickly arrived at the [foreign] ministry to [mount] pressure [towards] their release, under the pretext that they had not committed any crime,” Illaik noted.

This is while the armed group had seriously violated the law by posing a “significant security threat,” he said.

The report came amid intensifying efforts by the Israeli regime’s spying apparatus and many of its counterparts around the world to dig up intelligence that could potentially contribute to assassination of members of Hezbollah and its fellow regional resistance movements.

On January 8, a senior commander of the Lebanese resistance movement was assassinated in an Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon.

Wissam Hassan al-Tawil was killed when the strike hit the vehicle transporting him in the village of Khirbet Selm.

Earlier that month, the regime assassinated Saleh al-Arouri, a senior leader of the Gaza-based resistance movement of Hamas, in a drone strike against Beirut’s Dahieh neighborhood.

Hezbollah has warned the regime that such targeted killings would not go unanswered. It has also strongly cautioned Tel Aviv against waging an all-out war against Lebanon.

Max Verstappen Cruises To 'Unbelievable' Red Bull One-Two In Bahrain

Three-time world champion Max Verstappen began his title defence in flawless fashion on Saturday when he guided his Red Bull team to a crushing one-two triumph, ahead of team-mate Sergio Perez, at the Bahrain Grand Prix. In a statement of emphatic superiority, the 26-year-old Dutchman came home 22.5 seconds clear of Perez, who started from fifth, to ease some of the pressure on team boss Christian Horner. Pole sitter Verstappen held off the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc to lead into the first corner, and it was business as usual from there to the flag as he enjoyed the perfect start to his quest for a fourth consecutive title.

By claiming the 33rd pole of his career, fastest lap and race win, Verstappen delivered the 12th ‘hat-trick’ of his career leaving only the seven-time champions Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton ahead on 22 and 19 trebles respectively.

It was Verstappen’s eighth successive win, his 55th race victory and 99th podium finish as Red Bull dominated an uneventful race on a cold evening at Sakhir’s Bahrain International Circuit.

it also extended his run as championship leader to 40 races since the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix.

“Unbelievable!” said Verstappen.

“I think today went better than expected and we had a lot of pace. It was super-enjoyable to drive and we stayed out of trouble. It’s a good start to the year – it couldn’t be better.

“It was a lot of fun. And it’s very special to have days like today as it doesn’t happen often, when everything is all ok with the car. It felt great today.”

Team-mate Perez praised the team.

“The team definitely had good momentum. We’ve got to keep it up now for the coming weekends,” he said.

“It was the maximum we could achieve – a tricky race with the tyre management and plenty to learn from the race.”

Carlos Sainz, whose seat at Ferrari is to be taken by Hamilton next year, finished a pugnacious third ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc, who profited from a rare error by Mercedes George Russell in the closing laps.

“I felt really good today and had good pace. We had a clear plan and it worked well,” said Sainz.

“I managed my tyres and then I could overtake a few cars on the way to the podium. A good step forward compared to last year.”

Russell finished fifth ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris, Hamilton in the second Mercedes, Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren and the Aston Martin duo two-time champion Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Horner show of unity

After days of speculation, Red Bull boss Horner arrived hand in hand with his wife, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell – a show of unity following the release on Thursday of a cache of alleged messages from him to a female member of staff.

That had come just 24 hours after he had been cleared by Red Bull’s internal investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

On track, the team showed no apparent distraction as Verstappen topped qualifying to secure his 33rd pole position – and lead the pack when the lights went out in cold, dry conditions in the desert.

The Dutchman made a clean start and led from lights to flag.

When he came in for his final set of new softs at the end of lap 37, he re-joined with a 17-second cushion ahead of Perez.

It was a commanding performance from the champion, decorated with a fastest lap of 1:32.608 as he cruised through the final 16 laps: a lap that was fully 1.5 seconds quicker than any other.

“Look, it’s been the best possible start to the season,” said Horner afterwards.

“Very clinical from the team and a well-executed race. The perfect start.”

Asked about his own position and the confidence that Red Bull’s owners have in him, Horner was bullish.

“Do I have their backing? Absolutely, yes,” he said. “Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here.”

11 Palestinians Killed In Israeli Air Strike On Tent In Gaza's Rafah

11 Palestinians Killed In Israeli Air Strike On Tent In Gaza's Rafah

Hostilities came amid uncertainty over whether negotiations on a Gaza ceasefire. (Representational)

Cairo:

At least 11 Palestinians were killed when an Israeli airstrike hit a tent in Rafah in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, the Gaza health ministry said, in an area where people are seeking sanctuary from Israel’s devastating offensive.

The Gaza health ministry said another 50 people were wounded in the strike next to a hospital in the Tel Al-Sultan area of Rafah. One of the dead was a medic at the hospital. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“The strike hit one tent, where people took shelter, directly, shrapnel came inside the hospital where me and friends were sitting, we survived by a miracle,” a witness told Reuters by phone from the area, declining to be identified.

The Israeli military said its forces killed eight militants in Khan Younis, around 20 militants in the central Gaza Strip and three more in Rimal, near Gaza City.

The hostilities came amid uncertainty over whether negotiations on a Gaza ceasefire would resume on Sunday.

Well over a million Palestinians have been seeking refuge in the Rafah area, fleeing the Israeli offensive which has laid waste to much of the Gaza Strip, killing more than 30,000 people, according to health authorities in Hamas-run Gaza.

Israel launched the offensive in response to the Oct. 7 attack by the Palestinian militant group, in which 1,200 people were killed in Israel and another 253 abducted, according to Israeli tallies.

U.S. President Joe Biden has said he hopes a ceasefire will be in place by the time of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which starts on March 10. Speaking to reporters on Friday, he said: “We’re not there yet.”

International pressure for a ceasefire has grown, with the United Nations warning that a quarter of the population of 2.3 million people are one step away from famine in the territory blockaded by Israel.

Three people searching for food in farmland in the northern Gaza Strip area of Beit Hanoun on Saturday were killed by Israeli strikes, residents and medics said. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Thirteen children have died at the Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza in the last three days from dehydration and malnutrition, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Doctors at the hospital said more were at risk of dying. “When a child is supposed to eat three meals a day and he only eats one, he obviously suffers from malnutrition, and all the diseases that come because of it,” said Doctor Imad Dardonah.

Biden announced on Friday plans to carry out a first military airdrop of food and supplies into Gaza, a day after the deaths of Palestinians queuing for aid drew renewed attention to the humanitarian catastrophe.

Health authorities in Gaza said 115 people were killed in Thursday’s incident, attributing the deaths to Israeli fire and calling it a massacre.

Israel disputed those figures and said most victims were trampled or run over.

CEASEFIRE TALKS

Israel and Hamas have been negotiating via mediators including Egypt and Qatar.

Two Egyptian security sources said Israeli and Hamas delegations were expected to arrive in Cairo on Sunday to resume indirect talks.

But an Israeli report cast doubt on this.

There was no immediate comment from Israel or Hamas.

The Egyptian sources said the parties had agreed on the duration of a Gaza truce, as well as hostage and prisoner releases, adding that the completion of the deal still requires an agreement on the withdrawal of Israeli forces from northern Gaza and a return of its residents.

However, Israel’s Ynet news, citing an unnamed senior official, reported that Israel would not be sending a delegation to the Cairo talks until it received a full list of hostages held in Gaza who were alive.

According to the report, the central issue being worked on was how many hostages would be released from Gaza, and in turn how many Palestinians would be freed by Israel in exchange for each of them.

“Until clear answers are given, a delegation would not be leaving to Cairo,” Ynet cited the official as saying.

A Palestinian official familiar with mediation efforts did not immediately confirm the Cairo talks. “When it comes to ending the war and pulling out forces out of Gaza, gaps remain unbridged,” the official said.

During the war, Israel has also stepped up raids in the occupied West Bank, where U.N. records show that at least 358 people have been killed since Oct. 7, a quarter of them children.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported on Saturday that Israeli forces shot a 16-year-old in the head near the hub city of Ramallah, killing him.

The Israeli military said its forces were conducting “routine activity” in the town of Kafr Ni’ma near Ramallah when dozens of people began hurling rocks and explosives at its forces, who responded with live fire, hitting one person.

2 Bilkis Bano Case Convicts Petition Court For "Final" Order On Remission

2 Bilkis Bano Case Convicts Petition Supreme Court For 'Final' Order On Remission

One of the convicts has also filed an application for bail. (Representational)

New Delhi:

Two of the 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case have moved the Supreme Court contending that its January 8 verdict cancelling remission of their sentence was “in teeth of” a 2002 constitution bench order and sought the issue to be referred to a larger bench for “final” adjudication.

Radheyshaym Bhagwandas Shah and Rajubhai Babulal Soni, both lodged in Godhra sub-jail after the Supreme Court verdict, said an “anomalous” situation has arisen wherein two different coordinate benches (benches of same strength) have taken diametrically opposite view on the same issue of premature release as well as on which policy of the state government would be applicable to the petitioners for remission.

The plea, filed through advocate Rishi Malhotra, said while one bench on May 13, 2022 categorically ordered the Gujarat government to consider the application of Radheyshaym Shah for premature release in terms of the state government’s remission policy of July 9, 1992, the bench that pronounced the verdict on January 8, 2024 concluded that it was Maharashtra and not the Gujarat government that was competent to grant remission.

“That with greatest respect the judgement rendered on January 8, 2024 is directly in teeth of the constitution bench decision in Rupa Ashok Hurra’s case of 2002 and the same needs to be set aside, as if the same is permitted then it would lead to not only judicial impropriety but to uncertainty and chaos as to which precedence (sic) of law has to be applied in future. In other words, if any party being not satisfied with the Supreme Court Judgment on an issue, he would be entitled to file a Writ Petition challenging the said Judgement by taking recourse to law laid down in Bilkis Bano case,” the plea said.

Shah has also filed an application for bail.

“In another words, a fundamental issue arises for consideration as to whether a subsequent Co-ordinate Bench can set aside its earlier Judgement rendered by its earlier Co-ordinate Bench and pass contradictory orders/judgments overruling its earlier view or the proper course would have been to refer the matter to a larger bench in case it felt that the earlier Judgment was passed in wrong appreciation of law and facts,” the plea said.

The plea sought a direction to the Centre to consider the case of the petitioners for premature release and clarify which judgement of its coordinate benches- of May 13, 2022 or January 8, 2024- would be applicable to them.

It said since two benches of the Supreme Court of same strength have passed conflicting orders, the matter should be referred to a larger bench for final adjudication.

On Janaury 8, in a massive setback to the Gujarat government, the top court quashed the remission it had granted to 11 convicts in the high-profile gang-rape case of Bilkis Bano and the killing of her seven family members, while slamming the state for being “complicit” with the accused and abusing its discretion.

It ordered all the convicts, who were released prematurely on Independence Day in 2022, back to jail within two weeks.

Excoriating the Gujarat government, the Supreme Court said it “usurped” the power of the Maharashtra government to grant remission to the convicts.

It held as nullity the May 13, 2022 judgement of another bench of the Supreme Court, which had directed the Gujarat government to consider the remission applications of the 11 convicts in the case, saying it was obtained by “playing fraud on court”.

Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was raped while fleeing the horror of the communal riots that broke out after the Godhra train burning incident in February 2002. Her three-year-old daughter was among the seven family members killed.

'He Migrated To Follow Dancing Dreams', Says Family Of Indian Shot Dead in US

Suri, West Bengal:

Classical dancer Amarnath Ghosh’s uncle on Saturday said he is still in the dark about the details of his nephew’s death in the USA, even as four days have passed since he was shot dead.

Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam dancer Amarnath Ghosh, who hailed from West Bengal’s Birbhum district and migrated to the US last year “to follow his dancing dreams,” was shot several times near the border of St Louis’ Academy and Central West End neighbourhoods. He died on the spot.

“We had informed the district police and administration about what we had heard from various sources. But till today we don’t have any details about his death, Amarnath’s uncle Shyamal Ghosh said in Suri.

Amarnath, whose parents are no more, used to stay at Subhas Pally locality of Suri town. He is the only child of his parents.

Local councillor Suparna Roy also said that they didn’t have any information about the killing.

No official of the Birbhum district administration was available for comment on this issue.

“Hope we get the update of this heinous crime as early as possible. If I am not wrong this is 5th or 6th murder of Indian Students in 2 months. We all are worried here & griefing,” actor Devoleena Bhattacharjee, who is a friend of Amarnath, said in a post on X on Saturday.

It was Bhattacharjee, who first alerted the authorities on social media about Ghosh’s death.

Bhattacharjee tagged the X handles of the Indian Embassy in the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to look into the matter.

“Only child in the family, mother died 3 years back. Father passed away during his childhood… the reason, accused details everything are not revealed yet or perhaps no one left in his family to fight for it except his few friends,” she said on Friday.

WhatsApp banned over 67L bad accounts in India in Jan

New Delhi: Meta-owned WhatsApp banned over 67 lakh bad accounts in India in the month of January, in compliance with the new IT Rules 2021. Between January 1-31, the company banned “6,728,000 accounts”.

About 1,358,000 of these accounts were proactively banned, before any reports from users, WhatsApp said in its monthly compliance report.

The most popular messaging platform, which has over 500 million users in the country, received another record 14,828 complaint reports in January in the country, and the records “actioned” were 10.

“Accounts Actioned” denotes reports where WhatsApp took remedial action based on the report and taking action denotes either banning an account or a previously banned account being restored as a result.

“This user-safety report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform,” according to the company.

In a bid to empower millions of Indian social media users, the Central government has launched the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) which looks into their concerns regarding content and other issues.

The newly-formed panel, a move to strengthen the country’s digital laws to tame the Big Tech companies, will look into appeals by users against decisions of social media platforms.

`”We are an industry leader among end-to-end encrypted messaging services in preventing and combating abuse. In addition to our safety features and controls, we employ a team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and experts in law enforcement, online safety, and technology developments to oversee these efforts,” WhatsApp said in a statement. In December last year, WhatsApp banned more than 69 lakh bad accounts in the country.
