GAZA massacre front, center in UK by-elections

Saeed Pourreza

Press TV, Rochdale

It’s election year in the UK and the ongoing Israeli genocidal war on Gaza has taken center stage in the special electoral campaigns in England this month. This report looks at the by-elections in the Greater Manchester town of Rochdale, where the opposition Labor Party’s failure to call for an immediate permanent ceasefire in Gaza has come home to roost.

England Legend Delivers Brutal Verdict On Bazball

Team England in action© AFP

England will aim to end the five-match series against India on a high as the fifth match is slated to be played from March 7 in Dharamshala. The Rohit Sharma and co gained an unassailable lead 3-1 lead after registering a thumping five-wicket victory in the fourth Test in Ranchi. Chasing 192, India lost some five wickets with 120 runs on the board but the unbeaten partnership between Shubman Gill (52*) and Dhruv Jurel (39*) took the hosts across the line.

Ahead of the fifth Test, former England opener Geoffrey Boycott picked up an “error” made by Ben Stokes during India’s chase in the fourth match.

“I like Stokes’s captaincy but I thought he made a big error by opening the bowling with two spinners, Root and Tom Hartley. Stokes was thinking that a harder new ball would bounce more and a raised seam would create more spin,” Geoffrey wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

“The problem is that unless you are experienced at bowling spin with a new ball then the lacquer makes it slip out of the fingers so it is difficult to drop it on a length. When I played, spinners could rub the ball in the dirt to rough it up and grip it better but that is banned now so it is hard for them to control. I think Stokes out-thought himself,” he added.

“Bazball has given Test cricket a shot in the arm and England deserves praise for that. At times, I love it. But I love winning more and England has failed to beat the best two teams in the world: Australia and now India,” he further wrote.

Geoffrey further stated that the low contribution from the batters is the reason why England lost the match and the series.

“Chasing small totals in the last innings of a Test match has historically proved difficult for many teams because the pitch is usually worn and playing tricks,” stated the England great.

“Early wickets are a priceless bonus but it is also imperative the bowlers tie the batsmen down to build pressure on the batting team. The game and series were lost by the batsmen,” he added.

The fifth and final Test of the five-match series will kick-start from March 7 in Dharamshala.

Over 7,300 Palestinians arrested in West Bank since Gaza war

Israeli military forces have arrested at least 7,335 Palestinians in the West Bank since the outbreak of relentless Israeli strikes and ground attacks against the Gaza Strip, which have killed more than 30,000 Palestinians and injured many more in the enclave.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club (PPC) said in a statement on Saturday that at least 10 people were arrested in the occupied territory over the past 24 hours.

Israeli military forces raided homes and businesses in different West Bank areas overnight and kidnapped several Palestinians.

According to local sources, Israeli soldiers broke into two print houses in the northern West Bank towns of Jaba’ and Sanur, and confiscated their equipment.

Israeli forces stormed al-Dawha town, located two kilometers southwest of Bethlehem, and abducted a young man from his home.

In the northwestern West Bank city of Qalqilya, Israeli soldiers kidnapped a young man from his home.

Israeli troops also raided several homes in Azzun town, located 9 kilometers east of Qalqilya, and arrested a young man.

Israeli settlers attack Palestinian gatherings in the West Bank, causing injuries

Meanwhile, several Palestinians were injured on Friday as a result of attacks carried out by extremist Jewish settlers against gatherings and properties in several areas of the occupied West Bank.

“Israeli settlers attacked the Arab Mleihat Bedouin gathering, northwest of Ariha city, and raided 12 homes,” Hassan Mleihat, the general supervisor of the al-Baidar organization for defending the rights of Bedouins, said.

Mleihat added that “a group of armed settlers, under the protection of the Israeli occupation army, stormed the gathering and raided the homes.”

He indicated that “12 homes were raided and forcibly searched and their contents were vandalized.”

Mleihat pointed out that the population of the gathering is estimated at about 1,200 Palestinians. He said that the settlers “physically assaulted several residents, leading to the injury of at least 5 of them with bruises during the home searches.”

He further noted that the search and assault operations were accompanied by gunfire, tear gas, and assaults on residents.

The Tel Aviv regime has escalated its acts of aggression against Palestinians across the West Bank since October 7 last year, when it began a genocidal war on the besieged Gaza Strip.

Nearly 400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the occupied territory since then.

"Right Now Ball Is In The Camp Of Hamas": US Official On Gaza Ceasefire

'Right Now Ball Is In The Camp Of Hamas': US Official On Gaza Ceasefire

“Right now, the ball is in the camp of Hamas,” US Official said.

Washington:

Israel has broadly accepted a deal for a six-week Gaza ceasefire and it is now up to Hamas to agree to release the most vulnerable hostages for the deal to take effect, a senior US official said Saturday.

“There’s a framework deal. The Israelis have more or less accepted it,” the Biden administration official told reporters on a call, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“Right now, the ball is in the camp of Hamas.”

Negotiators from regional powers were working “around the clock” to secure the deal by the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which is due to start in about one week.

“It will be a six-week ceasefire in Gaza starting today if Hamas agrees to release the defined category of vulnerable hostages… the sick, the wounded, elderly and women,” the official added.

“I just want to kind of emphasize that we would have a ceasefire if Hamas addresses that final issue.”

US officials hope such a deal would create space for a “more enduring” peace settlement between Israel and Hamas, at war since the Palestinian militant group’s October 7 attack on Israel.

A Hamas delegation was expected to fly to Cairo on Saturday for talks on a truce, a source close to the group told AFP.

The ceasefire would also allow a “significant surge” in humanitarian aid to Gaza, with the UN warning of an imminent famine in the north of the besieged territory.

The United States announced earlier Saturday that it had carried out its first airdrop of aid into Gaza, following a deadly incident at an aid station on Thursday in which more than 100 Palestinians died.

But US officials said this could not replace the need for as much relief as possible to move by land into Gaza.

“None of these — maritime corridors, airdrops — are an alternative to the fundamental need to move assistance through as many land crossings as possible. That’s the most efficient way to get aid in at scale,” a second US official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

EU: Israel attack on civilian aid seekers in Gaza 'unjustifiable'

The European Union raps a recent “unjustifiable” attack by the Israeli occupation forces on Palestinian civilians seeking food aid in the besieged Gaza Strip, calling for an international probe of the deadly incident.

In a statement on Saturday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned the restrictions imposed by Israel on the entry of humanitarian aid and the opening of crossing points.

He said the firing by Israeli troops against civilians trying to access foodstuff is unjustifiable.

“We request an impartial international investigation on this tragic event allowing for a clear picture of the events and responsibilities,” he added.

At least 112 people were killed and more than 750 others wounded on Thursday as the Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians who had surrounded a convoy of 38 aid trucks in Gaza, with the Palestinian health ministry calling the incident a “massacre.”

The latest Israeli crime comes as NGOs and UN experts have on several occasions voiced fears of famine in the besieged territory, which has been completely cut off from aid by the occupation since October last year.

Borrell emphasized that Israel shoulders the responsibility to comply with the rules of international law and to protect the distribution of humanitarian aid to civilian populations in any case.

“The responsibility for this incident lays on the restrictions imposed by the Israeli army and obstructions by violent extremist to the supply of humanitarian aid,” the top EU diplomat pointed out.

Borrell warned that the restrictions on the entry of humanitarian assistance contribute to creating scarcity, hunger and disease, saying it would also lead to a level of desperation that brings about violence.

He added that unabated fighting and disregard for international humanitarian law will lead to “complete chaos” making the distribution of humanitarian aid impossible.

He stressed the need to restore a minimum of order and security in Gaza to preserve a humanitarian space.

“We urge Israel to fully cooperate with the UN agencies and other humanitarian actors involved in the humanitarian response and to allow free, unimpeded and safe humanitarian access through all crossing points,” Borrell said.

The EU’s top diplomat also urged Israel to swiftly remove the obstacles at the Kerem Shalom crossing and open the access in the north at Karni and Erez crossings, to open the port of Ashdod to humanitarian aid and to allow a direct humanitarian corridor from Jordan.

He emphasized that airdrops should be the solution of last resort given their minimal impact and their risks to civilians.

Borrell also urged the United Nations Security Council to call for an “urgent cessation of hostilities”.

He said the UN body should reiterate the utmost necessity to allow “a full, rapid, safe and unhindered” humanitarian access to deliver swift, massive and adequate aid in response to the needs of the civilian population in Gaza.

“An immediate humanitarian pause, leading to a lasting ceasefire is urgently needed to enable the large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians in Gaza,” he emphasized.

Israel waged its genocidal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 30,320 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 71,533 others.

The Tel Aviv regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Doctors point out leading factors behind heart related problems in youth

Representational Image

New Delhi: Medical experts have pointed out some of the major factors contributing to stress, anxiety and heart related problems in youth at a very early age.

Speaking at ‘ANI Dialogues 2024-Navigating India’s Health Sector’, Dr Sandeep Nayar, Prinicipal Director and HOD, Chest and Respiratory Diseases, BLK Hospital on Saturday said that lack of outdoor activities, change in lifestyle among others have contributed a lot.

“In our childhood we used to play full day. Now the things are totally opposite. The youngsters are staying at their homes playing video games on phones or computers. They are hardly going out. Smoking and alcohol have contributed a lot.

Lack of exercise among youths. Since Covid arrived, due to closure of schools and colleges, psychological problems started appearing in children. It’s the time of fast foods, food is being delivered at home. There is a lot change in the lifestyle,” he said.

“How many psychological problems are there in children nowadays? The upbringing is so good in a joint family as there are many people that a child can talk to.

But today, there is only 2-3 people in a nuclear family. If there is a nanny, he will learn from her and not from the grandparents. There is a big communication gap,” he said.

Dr Suresh Kumar, medical director, LNJP Hospital pointed out that we have around 10 crore diabetic and pre-diabetic people in the country, adding that we have the highest number of hypotensive population around 22 per cent is in India.

“We have around 10 crore diabetic and pre-diabetic in the country. We have the highest number of hypotensive population around 22 per cent. We have large numbers of kidney disease patients, cancer patients. Heart rate is very common in youths today.

Lack of exercise, high cholesterol, Bad eating habits, change in lifestyle can be some of the factors.

Smoking is very common in young generation.

Sedentary lifestyle and also genetic factors because Heart diseases in India have 20 times mortality than Japan, six times than Chinese and five times more than American Whites.

So in all ethnic groups, Indian Population is highly vulnerable. Stress is also the highest contributor in this,” he said.

He also mentioned that to prevent obesity, one can shift to millets which are being promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as they are low on calories. Dr Nita Radhakrishnan, Addittional Professor and HOD, Department of Paediatric Hematology-Ocology, PGICH asserted that people in India tends to walk less and use more of private vehicles to reach somewhere which ultimately contribute to obesity.

“The penetrance of Digital and Smart phones is there to every level of the country. The urge to use public transport or to walk to reach to a place is very low in India. In abroad, people actually walks kilometers to reach to their work or ride a bicycle. We assess the cancer patients in our institute and found out that 30 per cent patients are obese and people are smoking even knowing that someone has cancer in the family. To reduce stress and pressure is to develop a friend circle. We have to teach children how to fight in different situations. In family, there should be a system where one can laugh, cry and discuss,” she said.

Dr Dhiren, Senior Paediatrician at Sir Gangaram Hospital said that Good Bacteria in body reduces stress, anxiety and cardiovascular diseases.

“There are two types of Bacteria- Good one and bad one. It is available in the food you eat. Trans fat, Low protein diet, low fibre diet, all these increase the bad bacteria in the gut and reduce the good bacteria. Now what is its link to the stress? Good bacteria are anti-inflammatory. It reduces inflammation in the body which helps in reducing stress, anxiety and cardiovascular diseases,” he said.

After 2 Rajya Sabha Stints, Mansukh Mandaviya To Make Lok Sabha Polls Debut

After 2 Rajya Sabha Stints, Mansukh Mandaviya To Make Lok Sabha Polls Debut

Mansukh Mandaviya has been fielded from Porbandar in Gujarat (File)

Actively associated with the BJP since his youth, Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya will be fighting the Lok Sabha elections for the first time after being a Rajya Sabha member for two terms.

He has been fielded from Porbandar in Gujarat, according to the BJP’s first list of candidates released on Saturday.

Known as “Green MP” for his penchant for cycling to Parliament, Mansukh Mandaviya, 51, has been steadily rising through the party ranks. He currently heads the ministries of health and chemicals and fertilizers.

He was entrusted with the most important health portfolio in the middle of 2021 when the nation was battling the COVID-19 crisis. He replaced Harsh Vardhan, who was dropped from the Council of Ministers as part of a reshuffle.

Simultaneously, Mansukh Mandaviya was given the charge of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. He replaced D V Sadananda Gowda, who was dropped from the Council of Ministers in the cabinet reshuffle.

He was holding the independent charge of the Shipping Ministry and was MoS for the Chemicals and Fertilizers Ministry then.

Born in a farmer’s family in a small village Hanol in Palitana taluka of Bhavnagar district in Gujarat, Mansukh Mandaviya has been actively involved in politics since his youth when he joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He soon became a state executive committee member of the ABVP’s Gujarat unit.

Mansukh Mandaviya had become the youngest member of the Gujarat legislative assembly in 2002. He was appointed as the secretary of BJP Gujarat in 2013 and the general secretary the next year.

Later, in 2014, he was appointed as the Gujarat state in-charge of BJP’s high-tech and mega membership drive campaign which saw over 1 crore people joining the saffron party in the state.

Mansukh Mandaviya got his first big break in administration when the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi appointed him as chairman of Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation Limited.

A veterinary doctor, Mansukh Mandaviya is a political science postgraduate from Bhavnagar University. He also holds a doctorate Doctorate of Philosophy degree from the Gujarat Institute of Development and Research, Ahmedabad.

Mansukh Mandaviya has been an important face in the Narendra Modi government at the Centre since 2016. He was first inducted in the cabinet as MoS for Road Transport and Highways, Shipping and Chemicals and Fertilisers on July 5, 2016.

On May 30, 2019, he was again sworn in as MoS for Chemicals and Fertilisers with an independent charge of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

He was first elected in Rajya Sabha in 2012 and re-elected in 2018.

As the health minister, he oversaw the implementation of the world’s largest Covid vaccination programme in the country, which led to over 220 crore doses being administered.

Mansukh Mandaviya’s team is also instrumental in rolling out the flagship Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission to make health services accessible.

One of the major highlights during his tenure has been the launch of Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan aimed at eliminating the disease five years ahead of the SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) target of 2030.

The program provides community support under which tuberculosis patients are adopted and cared for by an individual, elected representatives or institutions.

During the severe second wave of Covid-19, Mansukh Mandaviya as Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers played a major role in ramping up the supply of oxygen and medicines.

Under his leadership the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers set up over 10,600 Jan Aushadhi stores which provide over 850 kinds of medicines at affordable rates under the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana.

During his tenure, the ministry in 2022 launched an ambitious scheme of converting over 3.3 lakh retail shops of fertilisers into Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samruddhi Kendras.

Video Of Shiv Sena MLA Thrashing Man Goes Viral. Then, An Explanation

Video Of Shiv Sena MLA Thrashing Man Goes Viral. Then, An Explanation

Mumbai:

A video of Shiv Sena MLA from Buldhana, Sanjay Gaikwad, thrashing a youth with a stick has gone viral, inviting sharp criticism from the opposition which claimed the law and order situation is deteriorating in the state.

Mr Gaikwad said he beat up the youth as the latter was part of an anti-social gang and had hit a policeman.

The incident occurred on February 19 during Shiv Jayanti celebrations, he said.

“(It is observed that) A gang of youth consumes alcohol and drugs and attacks people, especially women, during events like Shiv Jayanti and Ambedkar Jayanti,” the Buldhana MLA said.

When people brought the illegal act to my notice, I told the police but the gang also attacked a police personnel, he claimed.

“The police personnel fell on the ground in the attack after which I intervened,” Mr Gaikwad said.

Latching on the video, the leader of the opposition in the assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, said the “goon” attacking a youth is an MLA of the faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and questioned the law and order situation in the state.

The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) also raised concerns over the law and order situation when ruling party MLAs resort to such an act.

Gaikwad is, however, not new to controversies.

Gaikwad had last month claimed that he had hunted a tiger in 1987 and has been wearing its tooth around his neck, following which the state Forest department seized the accessory and booked him under the Wildlife Protection Act.
