UK Ship Sunk By Houthis "Environmental Catastrophe" For Red Sea: Yemen

UK Ship Sunk By Houthis 'Environmental Catastrophe' For Red Sea, Says Yemen

Aden, Yemen:

The UK-owned Rubymar, attacked by Houthi militants last month, has sunk in the Red Sea, Yemen’s internationally recognised government said on Saturday, warning of an “environmental catastrophe” from the ship’s cargo of fertiliser.

If confirmed, it would be the first vessel lost since the Houthis began targeting commercial shipping in November, forcing shipping firms to divert vessels on to the longer, more expensive route around southern Africa.

The Iranian-backed Houthis, who control the north of Yemen and other large centres, say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Their attacks have prompted a series of strikes against their positions by the United States and Britain, and other navies to send vessels to the region to try to protect a vital trade route.

Italy’s defence ministry said on Saturday one of its naval ships had shot down a drone flying towards it in the Red Sea.

The Houthi Transport Ministry, meanwhile, said there had been a “glitch” in undersea communication cables in the Red Sea as a result of actions by U.S. and British naval vessels. It did not give further details.

On Monday, a Yemeni government team visited the Rubymar, a Belize-flagged cargo ship, and said it was partially submerged. A government statement on Saturday said the ship had sunk in the southern Red Sea on Friday night.

The United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet did not immediately respond to a request to confirm the sinking.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency on Saturday reported a ship sinking, but did not identify it.

The U.S. military previously said the attack had significantly damaged the freighter and caused an 18-mile (29-km) oil slick. The ship was carrying more than 41,000 metric tons of fertiliser when it came under attack, the U.S. military has said.

Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, foreign minister in Yemen’s internationally recognised government in Aden, said in a post on X: “The sinking of the Rubymar is an environmental catastrophe that Yemen and the region have never experienced before.

“It is a new tragedy for our country and our people. Every day we pay the price for the adventures of the Houthi militia …”

The internationally recognised government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia, has been at war with the Houthis since 2014.

MARINE LIFE THREATENED

The release of such large amounts of fertiliser into the Red Sea poses a serious threat to marine life, said Ali Al-Sawalmih, director of the Marine Science Station at the University of Jordan.

The overload of nutrients can stimulate excessive growth of algae, using up so much oxygen that regular marine life cannot survive, said Al-Sawalmih, describing a process called eutrophication.

“An urgent plan should be adopted by countries of the Red Sea to establish monitoring agenda of the polluted areas in the Red Sea as well as adopt a cleanup strategy,” he said.

The overall impact depends on how ocean currents deplete the fertiliser and how it is released from the stricken vessel, said Xingchen Tony Wang, assistant professor at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Boston College.

The ecosystem of the southern Red Sea features pristine coral reefs, coastal mangroves and diverse marine life.

Last year, the area avoided a potential environmental disaster when the United Nations removed more than 1 million barrels of oil from a decaying supertanker moored off the Yemen coast. That type of operation may be more difficult in the current circumstances.

The Houthi attacks have stoked fears that the Israel-Hamas war could spread, destabilising the wider Middle East.

In a separate report, the UKMTO agency said it had received a report of a ship being attacked 15 nautical miles west of Yemen’s port of Mokha.

“The crew took the vessel to anchor and were evacuated by military authorities,” the UKMTO said in an advisory note.

'Won't Come Out Of Thin Air': S Jaishankar Warns Of AI, Deepfake Threat

New Delhi:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday warned against risks that new technologies like artificial intelligence and deepfakes pose for national security and said attempts of foreign interference through the cyber domain are growing.

In an interactive session at a think-tank, Jaishankar said there is a need to guard against threats emanating from the cyber domain.

“When we think of security, it is not just the defence of the borders, it is not countering terrorism alone…. But there is the daily routine which is so susceptible today to manipulation and this is growing,” he said.

“I would say frankly, in many ways, today foreign interference in this country is growing. It is important for the average person to understand how the world is changing because it is an era of AI (artificial intelligence) and deepfakes,” Jaishankar said.

The external affairs minister was speaking at the Ananta Aspen Centre.

“They will not come out of thin air. They are today at a certain level. There was a whole culture and a process which has allowed it to happen,” he said.

Jaishankar was asked whether India is becoming a surveillance state as the map of security threats to the ordinary Indian has increased exponentially.

“It is not a question of being paranoid. I mean, there are real problems out there. It is not again a question of surveillance. There is a certain responsibility that the state has. Let us not confuse anarchy and irresponsibility with freedom,” he said. PTI MPB RC

Here’s how much Rihanna charged for her performance at Anant Ambani’s pre-wedding bash

Anant Ambani-Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding bash kicked off with a bang as celebrities from all sectors took part in the three-day festivities at Jamnagar in Gujarat. International pop sensation Rihanna lit up the event with her electrifying performance which left the audience in awe.

The point of discussion, however, is the fee demanded by the 38-year-old pop star to perform at the grand event.

According to a report on Business Today, Rihanna has charged the Ambanis a staggering $8-9 million which is about Rs. 66-74 crore for the exclusive performance. The pop star expressed gratitude to the Ambani family for including her in the celebrations.

Rihanna is not the first international musician to perform at an Ambani event as Beyonce, Chris Martin, Maroon 5 and Jon Legend have performed in the earlier family events.

The pre-wedding festivities saw presence of Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, his philanthropist wife Priscilla Chan, Microsoft co-founder  Bill Gates, former US president Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and Indian luminaries including Gautam Adani, Adar Poonawaala, cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma among others and artists like Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor etc.

A Special Welcome By Wife For Shivraj Chouhan As He Makes It To Poll List

A Special Welcome By Wife For Shivraj Chouhan As He Makes It To BJP Poll List

His wife performed ‘aarti’ and touched Shivraj Chouhan’s feet.

A special welcome by wife was waiting for former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at home as his name figured on the BJP’s first list of 195 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. His wife, Sadhna Singh, greeted him at their home’s doorstep, applied tilak on his forehead and garlanded him.

She also performed ‘aarti‘ – a ritual of welcoming guests by offering blessings – and touched his feet.

The BJP’s first list of 24 candidates for Madhya Pradesh featured Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, while Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur was replaced by another candidate.

“I am grateful to the central leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, BJP chief JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit (Shah) ji and Defence Minister Rajnath (Singh) ji,” Mr Chouhan told NDTV.

The 64-year-old, who led the BJP to victory in the last year’s assembly elections yet was replaced by Mohan Yadav as Chief Minister, would be contesting the Lok Sabha elections after a gap of nearly 20 years.

Commenting on the new role assigned to him, he said, “The BJP is like my mother, my mission. Whatever role was given to me, I will fulfill it with dedication”.

He also insisted that there was “no if” on his chances in the upcoming polls.

Mr Chouhan asserted that the “roadmap for Vidisha is ready”: “I am very close to the people of Vidisha, we are like family. The roadmap for Vidisha is ready”.

“The BJP will win all 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh and the state will put 29 garlands on PM Modi,” he added.

Mr Chouhan represented Vidisha – a seat represented by BJP stalwarts like late Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1991) and Sushma Swaraj (2009 and 2014), and newspaper publisher Ramnath Goenka (1971) – five times before becoming Chief Minister in November 2005. He is currently MLA from the Budhni assembly segment which falls under the Vidisha Lok Sabha seat.

He also praised the candidates’ list, terming it “balanced”. “It’s a balanced list with youth, women, people from all walks of life on it,” said the senior BJP leader.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, 53, was fielded from Guna Lok Sabha seat, where he, as a Congress candidate, lost to BJP’s KP Singh Yadav in 2019.

The BJP is yet to announce its candidate from Chhindwara. There was speculation until a few days ago about Congress veteran Kamal Nath and his son and sitting MP Nakul Nath planning to switch sides. The Naths, however, denied that they would be joining the BJP.

Union ministers Faggan Singh Kulaste and Virendra Singh Khatik were fielded from their current constituencies and Alok Sharma, a former mayor, from Bhopal was fielded in place of sitting MP Pragya Singh Thakur who is an accused in the Malegaon blast case and who has sparked several controversies due to her statements.

In 2019, the BJP had won 28 out of 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh. The party on Saturday announced new candidates for 11 seats while repeating 13 sitting MPs in its list of 24.

Liverpool Strike Late To Beat Forest, Spurs Fight Back To Close On Top 4

Darwin Nunez headed in a 99th-minute winner as injury-hit Liverpool moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, while Tottenham came from behind late on to beat Crystal Palace on Saturday. Liverpool’s resources have been stretched to the limit by injuries in recent weeks as they attempt to win a quadruple in Jurgen Klopp’s final season. The Reds were again without a host of star names including Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota.

But there was some light at the end of the tunnel with Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai making their returns as second-half substitutes.

The Uruguayan made the telling impact with virtually the last touch of the game, rising to flick home Alexis Mac Allister’s cross and secure Liverpool’s first win at the City Ground since 1984.

“In the last second the guy who looks like a former Liverpool player thought I’ll score a goal and decide the game,” said Klopp.

“The goal was set up by a guy who was the calmest on the whole pitch. I saw it only live but I’ll never forget it. He was calm. He chips the ball there. Super assist and super-important goal.

Victory pulls Klopp’s men four points clear of Manchester City, who face Manchester United on Sunday, and five ahead of Arsenal, who travel to Sheffield United on Monday.

Defeat leaves Forest still four points above the relegation zone and with the threat of a points deduction for breaches of financial rules still hanging over the club.

Son strikes for Spurs

Tottenham have made a habit of late fightbacks at home under Ange Postecoglou and needed another to inflict Oliver Glasner’s first defeat as Palace boss with a 3-1 win.

Eberechi Eze’s precise free-kick gave the Eagles a shock lead on the hour.

Timo Werner‘s first Spurs goal set up the grandstand finish when he tapped home Brennan Johnson’s low cross.

Cristian Romero then headed Tottenham in front before Son Heung-min sprinted clear to seal the three points.

“Persistence, some quality, belief,” said Postecoglou. The reaction was outstanding.”

Victory took Spurs to within two points of fourth-placed Aston Villa, who were in action later away to Luton.

Brentford came from behind to pile more pressure on under-fire Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino in a 2-2 draw.

Nicolas Jackson’s towering header powered the Blues into an early lead.

But Brentford are now five games unbeaten against their wealthy west London rivals.

Mads Roerslev levelled early in the second half before Yoane Wissa’s overhead kick put the Bees in front.

A header from Axel Disasi saved a point for Chelsea but there were still calls from the away fans for Pochettino to be sacked.

Newcastle kept their quest for Europe alive with their first home win for nearly three months to climb up to eighth.

The Magpies beat Wolves 3-0 to leapfrog their opponents in the table thanks to goals from Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento.

Brighton fell further away from the fight for Europe as they were soundly beaten 3-0 at Fulham.

Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz and Adama Traore struck for the Cottagers to extend Brighton’s barren run to three wins in 12 league games.

Everton remain in a relegation dogfight despite having a 10-point deduction reduced to six this week.

Beto missed a first-half penalty before putting the Toffees in front against West Ham.

But the Hammers came back to win 3-1 with goals from Kurt Zouma, Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez.

David Moyes’ men moved up to seventh and within two points of the top six.

Lawyer Who Helped Void Elon Musk's Tesla Compensation Seeks $6 Billion Fees

Lawyer Who Helped Void Elon Musk's Tesla Compensation Seeks $6 Billion Fees

washington:

The lawyers of a Tesla shareholder who helped void Elon Musk’s enormous 2018 compensation package have asked a court in the US state of Delaware for nearly $6 billion in legal fees, paid in company shares.

In a filing Friday with the Delaware Chancery Court, the three legal firms acknowledged the unprecedented size of the fees they are requesting but argued that winning the case in January provided “enormous benefits” to the carmaker.

“The size of the requested award is great because the value of the benefit to Tesla that Plaintiff’s Counsel achieved was massive,” the firms said.

The court in January approved the annulment of Musk’s 2018 enormous compensation agreement worth $55.8 billion, siding with Tesla shareholder Richard Tornetta, who claimed Musk was overpaid.

The firms asked the court for reimbursement of costs incurred, which they estimate at $1.12 million, as well as 29.4 million Tesla shares, which were listed at $202.64 per share at the close of Wall Street on Friday.

In an unusual request, the firms want the entire amount, $5.96 billion at today’s price, to be paid in Tesla shares.

This would represent a little under 1 percent of Tesla’s total capital but would place the firms, combined, among Tesla’s 10 largest shareholders.

When contacted by AFP, the law firms and Tesla did not immediately respond.

In her ruling, Delaware Chancery Court Judge Kathaleen McCormick said the process of approving Musk’s compensation was “deeply flawed.”

In response, the South Africa-born billionaire asked Tesla shareholders to support a transfer of the company’s registration from Delaware to Texas.

If BJP Is Not Defeated, Tribals Will Be Uprooted: Jharkhand Chief Minister

If BJP Is Not Defeated, Tribals Will Be Uprooted: Jharkhand Chief Minister

Ranchi:

Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren on Saturday alleged that the BJP would loot tribal land and uproot them from forests and coal-bearing areas, if the party is not defeated in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

He said that the BJP government at the Centre attempted to amend various laws that protect tribal rights but the coalition dispensation in the state would be protesting against such attempts.

The CM was delivering his concluding remarks in the state assembly, amid the walk-out of BJP legislators from the House.

The seven-day budget session of the assembly, which started from February 23, was adjourned sine die by Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto. As many as four bills, including an International University Bill, 2024, were passed on the concluding day of the session.

“This budget session highlighted the achievements of the government in past four years. A budget of Rs 1,28,900 crore was passed for the fiscal 2024-25 and the government set a target to make Jharkhand a Rs 10 lakh crore economy by 2029-30,” Mahto said.

The chief minister said that the “BJP government has made amendments in the forest right Act, under which the power of gram sabha has been snatched. Similarly, an attempt is being made to amend the Coal Bearing Areas (Acquisition and Development) Act and Chotanagpur Tenancy Act”.

“The Centre has planned to strategically drive out tribals from forest, coal-bearing areas and other places through the amendments. If BJP is not defeated in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, tribals will be uprooted from their land,” the CM claimed.

He urged the ruling alliance legislators to make people aware about BJP’s intention.

Soren said that former chief minister Hemant Soren had understood the strategy of the BJP.

“So, he was put in jail on land issue, while his name is not there anywhere,” the CM claimed.

He said the coalition government has worked to strengthen the education, social and economic system of the state so that “roti, kapda and makaan could be ensured for everyone”.
