Mr Muraleedharan thanked the students for their contribution

Thiruvananthapuram,Kerala:

A group of students who were evacuated by the Union government from Ukraine during the country’s war with Russia gave money for Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan’s security deposit for his candidature in Attingal Lok Sabha constituency.

The students, along with their parents, visited Mr Muraleedharan on Friday at the BJP’s state office in Thiruvananthapuram.

The students said that they have decided to pay for Mr Muraleedharan’s security deposit as a token of gratitude for their evacuation.

“I was a student at Zaporizhzhia University in Ukraine. We were there when the Russia-Ukraine war was going on. At that time, we were evacuated due to the efforts of Prime Minister Modi ji and Minister V Muraleedharan,” Sai Sruthi told news agency ANI.

“As a token of gratitude and respect, students and parents collected some money, and we came here today to present this amount as a deposit for his (V. Muraleedharan’s) election,” she added.

Mr Muraleedharan thanked the students for their contribution.

“I am thankful to the parents and the students who were evacuated by the Government of India during the period of conflict in Ukraine. In fact, during the last five years of PM Narendra Modi ji’s government, the most satisfying activity for me personally was the various evacuation operations,” he said.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s motto has always been ensuring the safety and security of every Indian wherever he or she is. His contacts at the highest level with the heads of government and states across the world have facilitated these evacuations. So, I would like to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji for ensuring the safety and security of every citizen, and also thank the students and parents of the evacuees from Ukraine for coming in support of my candidature in Attingal,” he added.

Fire At Ravi Foods In Katedan

Hyderabad: Devi and Hansika, the mother-daughter duo from Uttar Pradesh were tense and worried on Friday. A fire that raged through the biscuit factory at Katedan, where they worked, had put a question mark on their livelihood.

Devi, Hansika and several others worked at the biscuit factory which was gutted down by a fire in the early hours of Thursday. While it caused a huge loss to the management, the workers on the other hand are in a dilemma over their livelihood.

As usual, the women workers came to the company on Friday and returned after finding the gates locked. Many of them after looking at the magnitude of damage due to fire lost hope of the company resuming its operations anytime soon.

“So far, there is no clarity on resumption of work or any alternative. I guess, we have to move on and search for another job,” said Devi, who came from Uttar Pradesh to Hyderabad two months ago.

Manju, a mother of two children aged seven and nine years, worked, said, “my husband stayed back at our native place Allahabad while I came along with my relatives to work here.” She was paid around Rs. 400 a day for packing biscuit packets in cartons. “We now have no work and if the situation continues, we will be in a financial mess,” she said.

The workers are worried about finding work immediately. “Getting alternate job is not an easy task. It could take days or weeks for us to find a job,” said a woman not willing to be quoted.

The management of the company was not available for their comments while a person working at the company told that the owners are in talks with nearby biscuit factories for work for the affected workers.

The Katedan Industrial Area comprising Katedan, Madhuban, Mailardevpally and Jahangirabad has many companies and fire mishaps are common here. In the last one year, close to 25 big and small fire mishaps were reported here.

“After every mishap, there is trauma for the workers. They move around searching for alternate jobs,” said Raju K, a local social worker.

Khammam Collector VP Gautham accelerates setup of LS counting centers

Khammam: District Collector VP Gautham directed the officials to speed up the process of setting up counting centres for upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The Collector along with Commissioner of Police Sunil Dutt visited Sri Chaitanya Engineering College at Ponnekal in Khammam Rural mandal on Friday and inspected arrangements being made for counting centres, strong rooms and reception centre for seven Assembly segments under Khammam parliament constituency.

Proper facilities for strong rooms and counting rooms on the newly constructed second floor in the college have to be made.

Strong rooms should not have windows. In view of the summer season alternative arrangements should be made to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply. The fencing used in the assembly elections should be reused. Rooms for seven Assembly segments postal ballots have to be prepared.

25 fire extinguishers were available at the college and additional equipment has to be acquired besides setting up alarms for strong rooms, the Collector said.

Preparations should be made for the transportation of EVMs. A rain proof tent should be set up in the reception centre. As the counting of votes of seven segments would be done in one building, it should be ensured that the EVMs related to a segment stored in the rooms allotted to the respective segment.

Staff moving EVMs should be given t-shirts with the colour code of the segments and the name of the segments should be printed on them. Steps should be taken to use the colour assigned to the respective segment on name signs, banners, stickers, route maps and others, Gautham said.

Municipal Corporation Commissioner Adarsh Surabhi, additional Collector D Madhusudan Naik, training assistant Collectors Mayank Singh and Yuvraj were present.

Any attempts to dethrone Congress government would not be tolerated, says Komatireddy

Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy slammed union Tourism Minister and BJP State unit president G Kishan Reddy for failing to get funds or projects sanctioned to Telangana.

Any attempts to dethrone Congress government would not be tolerated, says Komatireddy

Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy

HYDERABAD: Stressing that Telangana was known for its fighting spirit and revolutions, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said any attempt to dethrone Congress government would not be tolerated. “Telangana is not like Maharashtra or Karnataka. Leave aside toppling our government, BJP should make sure its eight MLAs do not join the Congress,” Komatireddy Venkat Reddy thundered.

In an informal chat with media persons here on Friday, the Minister spoke on a host of issues, including politics and R&B department’s works. He slammed union Tourism Minister and BJP State unit president G Kishan Reddy for failing to get funds or projects sanctioned to Telangana. Gujarat developed River Sabarmati but Kishan Reddy failed to ensure River Musi development, he said, adding “Thanks to Kishan Reddy’s leadership, Congress is benefitting a lot politically in the State as we now confident of winning 14 Lok Sabha seats”

Expressing concern over Khairtabad MLA Danam Nagender being fielded from Secunderabad constituency, the Minister said winning as MLA from one party and contesting as MP from another party might lead to legal issues. On the dissent among Congress leaders over turncoats being offered tickets to contest Lok Sabha elections, he said the party leadership should take local cadre into confidence before encouraging defections.

“Congress loyal leaders should not get disheartened. Party will offer them suitable positions through nominated posts or MLCs,” Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said, dismissing the reports of tennis ace Sania Mirza being considered for Hyderabad MP seat, as mere speculations. He also shared that chances of AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi contesting from Khammam were bleak.

While the Telangana Congress was getting cozy with AIMIM, the Roads and Buildings Minister had different opinion. “AIMIM is BJP’s B team and fields its candidates only to split votes to facilitate BJP candidate’s victory,” Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said.

‘International theme parks to boost tourism in Telangana’

The Roads and Buildings Minister said plans were being made to approach Hollywood Studios and other prominent theme parks to set up their units in Telangana. Land would be allotted to these theme parks on nominal basis between Outer Ring Road and Regional Ring Road (RRR) to promote tourism, he said, adding nearly 5,000 acres would be required for the purpose.

Admitting the delay in completion of Uppal-Ghatkesar flyover, the Minister said the project would be completed in one year. On the 13 km-elevated corridor in defence lands in Secunderabad, he said tenders for the project would be floated in June and works would be completed in three years.

Similarly, the RRR tenders would also be floated after Parliament elections and the project would be completed in four years. The Central government was extending all support for the nearly Rs. 30, 000 crore project, he said.

The Cinematography Minister said the proposal for increasing movie tickets from film producers was vehemently declined. “Why should movies be made with heavy budgets, paying hefty remunerations to film stars? Should common people be made to bear the financial burden,” the Minister asked.

He also said government staff members were being made to get bills on exorbitant charges on tickets and refreshments in multiplexes. “We will definitely take action,” the Minister assured.

"Two Teams Given": Iyer Confused About KKR XI, Leads To Funny Situation

Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. RCB registered their first win of the season following their four-wicket triumph over Punjab Kings in their second game of the campaign. While KKR also clinched their first win of the season in their second game of the season. They edged past Sunrisers Hyderabad with a 4-run win in a nail-biting thriller. Both teams will be looking to keep the winning momentum in their favour.

KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer said after winning the toss, “We are going to bowl first. Had a brief chat with the curator, she was like the ball will spin as well. (Morale) It is fantastic, everyone is in high spirits. We have to carry forward the same momentum. It is important to be in the present. My role is to play an anchor role. It’s always good to have a lethal bowling line-up. It is important to stay in the present. We have to see to it that we capitalize on the start. The bowling – Anukul comes in. I am seriously confused. There are two teams given to me.”

RCB captain Faf du Plessis said during the time of the toss, “The same (would have bowled first). It’s a fresh wicket, looks a good wicket, you have to see how it plays in the first innings. It’s important to close games early in the season. All the great crickets adapt, it’s important to assess the conditions. We love the support and atmosphere. Same team.”

Congress considers Theenmar Mallanna for Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat

Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, who contested in Karimangar parliament segment in 2019, shifted to Husnabad to contest in assembly polls in 2023 and promised to support the candidature of Praveen Reddy in Lok Sabha polls.

Congress considers Theenmar Mallanna for Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat

Karimnagar: The Congress party continued to be undecided on the selection of a candidate for Karimangar parliament constituency. The exercise to finalise the candidate has been taking different turns with names popping up regularly. While former MLA Algireddy Praveen Reddy and Velichala Rajender Rao were in the race for the ticket, the name of Theeenmar Mallanna alias Chinthapandu Naveen came to the fore recently.

Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, who contested in Karimangar parliament segment in 2019, shifted to Husnabad to contest in assembly polls in 2023 and promised to support the candidature of Praveen Reddy in Lok Sabha polls. As part of free poll agreement, Praveen Reddy applied for Karimnagar parliament seat. Former MLA and veteran congress leader Velichala Jagapathi Rao’s son Rajender Rao also applied for the ticket.

While both the leaders were making serious efforts, Mallanna’s name came to fore all of sudden in the last few days. Though he has no connection with the district, the party central election committee is reportedly considering hism as he is from the BC (Munnurukapu) community. The other argument is that if he is chosen, the party’s promise to give more tickets to BCs would also be fulfilled, some of the party workers argue.

Out of 17 Lok Sabha segments, Congress announced candidates for 13 seats. Only three seats were allocated to BCs while Reddys got six segments. Two seats were given SC and ST leaders. To fill that gap, the party appears to have considered him for Karimnagar though he tried for the Bhongir ticket.

The party, it is said, believed that Mallanna would be able to give a tough fight to the sitting BJP MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who is also from the Munnurukapu community. Since both of them hail from same community, Mallanna will garner anti-BJP votes among BC especially kapu community votes.

However, the being a non-local could pose a challenge. The BJP candidate Sanjay Kumar has been criticising that the BRS aspirant B Vinod Kumar is a non-local leader and he could continue the same against Mallanna also, party sources say.

US Girl, 8, Dies After Being "Violently Sucked" Into Hotel Pool Pipe

8-Year-Old Girl In US Dies After Being 'Violently Sucked' Into Hotel Pool Pipe

The lawsuit seeks wrongful death damages of $1 million. (Representative pic)

An 8-year-old girl in the United States died after being “violently sucked” into a large pipe while swimming at a hotel in Houston, Texas, on Saturday, as per a lawsuit filed by the victim’s family. Aliyah Jaico was swimming with her family in a lazy river at the Doubletree by Hilton Houston Brookhollow Hotel when she suddenly disappeared, Fox News reported. Hours later, her body was found “inside a large pipe in the pool area,” Houston police said in a statement.

“Her poor little body was contorted when she was sucked into this hole and pipe 20 feet back,” Richard Nava, a lawyer representing the family, told reporters at a news conference. “They had to break up concrete and cut pipe in order to extract her… it was absolutely horrific,” Mr Nava said, per Fox News

The lawsuit states that the young girl was suddenly pulled into a 12 to 16-inch unsecured open gap in the swimming pool flow system. When she initially disappeared, her family did not know where she had gone, triggering a frantic search. According to the police, she was reported missing at about 5:45 pm Saturday. She was found around 11:30 pm and was pronounced dead by paramedics, cops said, adding that they were “continuing to investigate the incident”.

The family filed the lawsuit earlier this week, seeking wrongful death damages of $1 million. According to the suit, the 8-year-old “loved to swim,” and her mother, Jose Daniela Jaico Ahumada, had rented a room at the hotel that day “to enjoy a day of swimming with her family”.

“It took the fire department 13 hours to actually get her physical body removed from the pipe,” Justin Martinez, a communications representative for the Nava Law Group and the Jaico family, told The Washington Post

Separately, Mr Nava said that there was “an issue with the flow of the water” inside the pool that caused Aliyah to be sucked into what the lawsuit describes as an “unsecured open gap”. The hole was about 12 to 16 inches wide and the fire department had to “break up” the concrete pipe to retrieve the 8-year-old’s body, he added.

“We are seeking justice for Aliyah, because this could have been avoidable,” Mr Nava said, adding that Aliyah’s loved ones were “devastated” by her death.

The hotel is operated by Unique Crowne Hospitality LLC, according to the lawsuit.

In a statement to the Post, a Hilton spokesperson said the company was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a young girl”. But it also added that the property is “independently owned and operated by a third party”. Hilton said it “does not own, manage, or control the day-to-day operations of the property and does not employ any of the property’s staff or its third-party operators”.

A spokesman for Unique Crowne Hospitality said that the company is “deeply saddened” by Aliyah’s death. “We offer our sincere and deepest condolences to her family and loved ones at this difficult time,” the statement said. “Our commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for our guests is paramount and we will continue to cooperate fully with all authorities investigating this incident,” it added.
