Suryapet: Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday said that the people would teach a lesson to BJP in the Lok Sabha elections for its failure to fulfill its poll promises. Speaking to the media here, Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the existence of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in the state politics would fall in danger after lok sabha elections.

He said that the INDIA alliance would win a majority of the seats in Lok Sabha elections and come to power at the Centre as people of the country faced hard-time during Narendra Modi government.

Stating that BJP government did nothing to Telangana state, he reminded that Narendra Modi government failed to fulfill the promises made to Telangana in AP State Reorganization Act.

It had also cancelled Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR), which was sanctioned at Hyderabad by earlier UPA government. Referring to the comments of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, he reminded that central financial institutions have extended financial assistance to the same project. The state government ordered judicial inquiry into the irregularities that took place in execution of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme.

He said that Narendra Modi government, which promised two crore jobs, removed two crore employees during its tenure by privatizing the public sector units. The incomes of the farmers were also reduced to half instead of becoming double as promised by Narendra Modi. He asked the Congress members to attend the Congress Lok Sabha elections preparatory meeting. Which would be held at Mattampally on March 20 and make it a grand success.

Congress may attract some power brokers, but not the committed workers: Harish Rao

Former Minister T Harish Rao is addressing Party cadre in Siddipet on Friday.

Siddipet: Former Minister T Harish Rao has said that the Congress Party may have attracted some power brokers into its fold, but the Bharata Rashtra Samithi (BRS) cadre and the people who participated in the Telangana movement, would stay with the BRS.

Addressing the party preparatory meeting in Dubbak Constituency, which falls under Medak Lok Sabha Constituency on Friday, the former minister has said that K Chandrashekhar Rao had led the Telangana movement with tens of committed people. Stating that the power brokers would stay with people in power, Rao has said that fighting for the cause of the people was not a new thing for Chandrashekhar Rao and the BRS. Stating that the Congress came to power making several false promises, he asked people to vote for Congress if they had already got Rs 2 lakh loan waiver. Rao called upon the voters to vote for BRS if they did not get loan waiver benefits.

Later, addressing a constituency level meeting in Siddipet he pointed out that the Congress leaders had signed bond papers during the last election campaign promising to pay Rs 500 incentive on paddy crop. Accusing the Cheif Minister A Revanth Reddy of taking all the projects granted to Siddipet to Kodangal, he pointed out that veterinary college, Shilparamam, funds for road works and others were diverted to Kodangal. Accusing Revanth of feeling jealous about Siddipet’s progress, Harish said that Siddipet people would certainly teach a lesson to Congress in next elections.

Explained: Impact Of Baltimore Port Closure On Global Supply Chains

Explained: Impact Of Baltimore Port Closure On Global Supply Chains

Baltimore is among the top 20 ports in the United States

Washington:

The bridge collapse that closed the Port of Baltimore has raised concerns about the disaster’s potential impact on the global supply chain.

Authorities have warned that extensive work is needed before the major port can reopen following Tuesday’s catastrophic cargo ship collision, which has blocked the harbour’s entrance.

Here is a look at what it could mean for global trade:

A major car terminal

Baltimore is among the top 20 ports in the United States by tonnage and number of containers handled, according to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Last year, it handled a record 1.1 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) of containers — a measure of volume for shipping containers.

Container imports via Baltimore amounted to 2.1 percent of the total for all US ports, according to Allianz Trade.

Its location deep within the Chesapeake Bay make it a “second-tier American port,” said Paul Tourret, director of French maritime industry institute ISEMAR.

The port hosts transatlantic traffic, including small ships from northern Europe and the Mediterranean as well as some shipping lines from the Indian Ocean, Tourret said.

But it is a key hub for the auto industry.

Its private and public terminals handled 847,158 autos and light trucks last year, more than any other US port for the 13th year in a row, according to Maryland state figures.

It also ranked first for farm and construction machinery, as well as imported sugar and gypsum, and second for coal exports.

Alternative routes

German auto giants Volkswagen and BMW said their operations were not affected as the locations of their facilities were still accessible to ships.

US rival Ford said it had found alternative routes.

But the terminal for Mercedes-Benz is no longer reachable by sea as it is located behind the collapsed bridge.

The company told German media it is looking into alternative routes.

“The blockade of the Port of Baltimore will have little impact on trade between the USA and Europe,” Patrick Lepperhoff, principal at Inverto consultancy, wrote in a note.

“In the last quarter of 2023, around 260,000 standard containers were loaded and unloaded at the port.

This volume can be diverted to the neighbouring ports” such as New York and Norfolk, Virginia, he wrote said.

Coal and cobalt impact

The port closure is expected to primarily impact US exports of coal and imports of cobalt, according to ratings agency S&P Global.

Access to coal export terminals of CSX Curtis Bay and Consol Marine Terminal has been blocked, it said.

The accident is expected to disrupt coal exports from Baltimore for 10 to 15 days but market participants suggested it would have “limited pricing impacts amid well-stocked markets”, S&P added.

Coal exports from Baltimore jumped to 28 million short tons in 2023, mainly due to growing demand from Asia, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

“Even before the port’s closure, we were expecting much slower growth in total US coal exports in 2024, of just one percent,” the EIA said.

“The interruption in operations in Baltimore may affect the volume of exports this year,” it added.

Baltimore’s cobalt stocks were already under pressure due to strong demand for the mineral, a key component for electric car batteries and high-tech devices.

Yemeni rebel attacks on ships in the Red Sea have also caused delays as shipping companies have had to divert vessels to the longer and costlier route around southern Africa.

While the bridge incident will have “little to no impact” on US refined oil products, shipping fuel supplies “could tighten” on the Atlantic Coast as vessels refuel outside Baltimore, S&P said.

Video Featuring Hardik, Malinga Triggers Fresh Mumbai Indians Storm

Is all well in the Mumbai Indians camp? Hardik Pandya‘s appointment as the captain of the franchise, in place of Rohit Sharma, wasn’t reportedly received in the best possible manner by everyone. After Mumbai incurred two consecutive losses in their first two matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign, the situation seems to have worsened. A video has emerged on social media, making fans wonder if the relationship between Hardik and Malinga has turned sour. In the video, the MI captain could be seen pushing the legendary Sri Lankan away.

Malinga, who is a legend at Mumbai Indians, currently working as a coach, came to hug Hardik after the conclusion of the match but the skipper didn’t seem to be in the mood and pushed aside the Lankan after a brief handshake. Here’s the video:

Hardik Pandya was upbeat despite Mumbai losing their second successive match of the season, against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“Toughest soldiers get the toughest test; we are the toughest team in the competition, anyone who could have come close to where we reached as a batting group or just overall are us – let’s make sure we will help each other; worst or good, we will be together,” Hardik said.

Recapping the match, Sunrisers Hyderabad was put to bat first by Mumbai Indians. Fiery knocks came from Travis Head (62 in 24 balls, with nine fours and three sixes), and Abhishek Sharma (63 in 23 balls with three fours and seven sixes) that powered SRH to 148/2 in their 10 overs.

A brief 48-run stand between Abhishek and Aiden Markram (42* in 28 balls, with two fours and a six), Heinrich Klaasen (80* in 34 balls, with four boundaries and seven sixes) formed a 116-run stand in 54 balls to take SRH to 277/3 in their 20 overs, the highest-ever IPL total.

MI had been controlled well by SRH bowlers and restricted to a commendable 246/5 in 20 overs, losing by 31 runs.

Medigadda rehabilitation not before March 2025

If the complexities involved in the issue are to be taken into consideration, nothing of that sort is going to happen before March 2025, senior official in the averred.

Medigadda rehabilitation not before March 2025

Hyderabad: Medigadda episode is by all means, a ‘random occurrence’ caused by nature’s wrath. Certainly, there is ample scope for the rehabilitation of the barrage, said an irrigation expert and senior official in the department.

The reconstruction of the impacted pillars can be completed in two to two and a half months’ time if the works were undertaken with a sense of urgency. But it is too late to think in this line now. If the complexities involved in the issue are to be taken into consideration, nothing of that sort is going to happen before March 2025, he averred. The NDSA has been tasked with the key responsibility and given four months to investigate and come up with recommendations for barrage rehabilitation.

By the time the NDSA team submits its report, the monsoons would have set in and some of the tributaries of Godavari would be in spate. It would be the similar case with Pranahita too. Going by its history, the first flood in Pranahita would occur by June first week. The inflows into Medigadda barrage were 1.3 lakh cusecs during the second week of July last year.

In the absence of immediate repairs and rehabilitation, Mediggada barrage would be more vulnerable. The Pranahita sub basin is the seventh largest in India with its catchment spread over 1,09,078 square kilometers. The sub basin was the major contributor for the highest ever discharge of 28.25 lakh cusecs registered at Medigadda in July 2022. The CWC has, however, put it at 24.5 lakh cusecs only.

The NDSA team, after its first visit to Medigadda barrage on a stock taking mission, submitted its report on November 1, 2023. The government, irrespective of the party in power, should have raised to the issue at least a month or two after receiving the NDSA report. By this time, half the works would have been completed, assuring the farmers of resuming water supply for the Khariff, 2024. But in the present circumstances, there is no scope to give water to resume operations at Medigadda and Annaram before Khariff of 2025, stressed the irrigation experts.

Rehabilitation will need Rs 1250 cr

So far as the Medigadda rehabilitation works are concerned, its implementation would be at a cost of Rs 750 crore. Three of the piers found sinking have to be demolished and reconstructed. One or two piers in the vicinity of the impacted stretches may also need restoration as part of the permanent rehabilitation measures.

The rehabilitation of Annaram and Sundilla, wherein seepage issues were spotted, would require Rs 250 crore each. The irrigation department officials have been left with no say in rehabilitation of the barrages issue. They need to wait till the NDSA comes up with a plan of action to resume the operations of three barrages of the KLIS.

Though the NDSA was requested for an interim report with recommendation for taking up the repairs, it appears to be a remote possibility. It is yet to complete its information gathering exercise. Irrigation officials, who are equally competent to show a way out are now tight lipped. They are not going to take any initiative at this stage, as the proceeding of the Judicial probe into Medigadda and other barrages is likely to take off very soon, they disclosed.

Rahul Gandhi promises 50 pc reservation for women in government jobs if Congress voted to power

Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that his party will reserve 50 per cent of government jobs for women if it is voted to power.

Asserting that powerful women will change the destiny of the country, the former Congress chief asked why, even today only one in three women is employed and why is there only one woman in 10 government jobs. “Isn’t the population of women in India 50 per cent? Is the presence of women in higher secondary and higher education not 50 per cent? If so, then why is their share in the system so low. Congress wants, ‘Aadhi Abaadi Poora Haq’, we understand that women’s potential will be fully utilised only when women have equal contribution in the government running the country,” he said in a post in Hindi on X.

Therefore, the Congress has decided that half the recruitment for all new government jobs should be reserved for women, he added. “We are also in favour of the immediate implementation of women’s reservation in Parliament and in assemblies,” Gandhi said.

He also said that women with a secure income, future, stability and self-respect will truly become the strength of society. “Having women in 50 per cent of government posts will give strength to every woman in the country and powerful women will change the destiny of India,” the Wayanad MP said.
