Hardik Pandya can survive fans’ anger: Boult, Chawla back embattled MI skipper

Mumbai: Rajasthan Royals’ pacer Trent Boult on Sunday backed his former teammate Hardik Pandya to ‘block out white noise’ after the Mumbai Indians skipper found himself at the receiving end of crowd’s booing at Ahmedabad and Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL.

Pandya has taken over MI captaincy from Rohit Sharma this season upon his return from Gujarat Titans and the whole saga of change of leadership has not gone down well with the fans.

“It is something you cannot control, as professional sportspeople it is what you are exposed to in a way. You have to block out the white noise and focus on the job, (but) it is easier said than done,” Boult told the media here at the Wankhede Stadium.

Boult said the booing will eventually die down and backed Pandya to not get bogged down.

“There are a lot of passionate fans in this country and speaking of Hardik specifically, he is one of my favourite Indian cricketers and I do not think the booing will hold out for too long. I am sure, he is one of those guys who can put it aside and focus on the job,” Boult added.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians’ veteran spinner Piyush Chawla said the situation will change once the team, which has again made a disappointing start to the IPL losing the first two games, gets a win in their kitty.

“Well, that you can’t really help because you know, they are a crowd and whatever they are doing is beyond our control so we can’t really say what they are doing,” Chawla said.

Chawla claimed that Pandya has remained unaffected.

“The way Hardik has taken it…he is just focusing on the game, he is not even worried about what the crowd is doing and once we get a win under our belt, things will be totally different.” The right-arm spinner said MI have also looked to focus on the job at hand rather than focussing on what the fans have been doing inside the stadium.

“You get used to it, because you know, whatever is happening, whatever people are doing in the crowd, you can’t really help it because it’s beyond our control.

“We just have to focus on our game and whatever they are doing, let them do. We just have to focus on our cricket,” he said.

However, Chawla hoped that the ‘true’ Mumbai fans would show up on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium to support the team in their first home game of the season.

“At the end of the day it’s about the team; it’s not about the individual. I am really hoping when the crowd comes in tomorrow, they will support the team after the kind of start we had,” he said.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad FC are back in action in the Indian Super League after a long international break, as they take on Mumbai City FC in GMC Balayogi Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday.

The young Hyderabad squad made headlines after registering their first win of the season beating Chennaiyin FC 1-0 at their home in the last game. “After getting the season’s first victory, the morale of the club is at the top and the target against Mumbai City is to get the three points,” Shameel Chembakath, HFC assistant coach said.

The Islanders have some of the most influential attacking players in the league – Jorge Pereyra Diaz, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Bipin Singh and Vikram Partap Singh. This suggests a tough challenge for HFC’s defense to silence them at the Gachibowli. “We are aware of the strong line-up of Mumbai and they will come out all guns blazing against us, but I believe our strategy and tactics will give them a good competition,” the assistant coach asserted.

This fixture has seen numerous draws in the past, with five draws and two wins each for both sides. But clearly, Petr Kratky’s side with 41 points from 19 games will head into the game as clear favourites. Thangboi Singto-led side will miss defender Mohammed Rafi for the tie, through suspension and defender Manoj Mohammed and striker Aaren D’Silva are yet to make a comeback with their respective injuries.

But Kratky will firmly instruct his team not to underestimate Hyderabad as NorthEast United FC and Chennaiyin did in the last two games, where the bottom-placed side HFC managed to secure four crucial points.

Future of the club:

The former champions are facing a crisis, especially financially. Unpaid salaries to staff led to player exodus in the January transfer window. The club has been recently handed a transfer ban by FIFA for two transfer windows, which means the club cannot register new players for the entire 2024-25 season.

When asked about the future of the club, the assistant coach was somewhat reserved but hinted at upcoming positive developments. “Things will improve and there will be plenty of activities ahead. The club officials will keep everyone updated,” he concluded.

Pant Thrashes CSK Bowlers For First Fifty Following Horrific Car Crash

Rishabh Pant was on top of his game on Sunday night as he took the Chennai Super Kings bowlers to the cleaners with his sensational strokes. During the Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2024 match vs CSK in Visakhapatnam, Pant scored 51 off only 32 ball with the help of 4 fours and 3 sixes. That also happened to be Pant’s first fifty in competitive cricket ever since his return from a horrific car crash he met with in December 2022. Pant made his comeback to competitive cricket with IPL 2024 but he failed to spread his magic with the bat in the first two games. However, the third game saw a change in fortunes for Pant.

Comeback man Pant announced his arrival with a superb fifty after opening duo of David Warner and Prithvi Shaw provided the foundation as Delhi Capitals posted a competitive 191 for 5 against Chennai Super Kings in their IPL game on Sunday.

Opting to bat, Warner and Shaw shared a 93-run opening stand but the highlight of the day was Pant’s sensational knock, which gave them the impetus in the end.

Pant, who came into the tournament after recovering from a life-threatening road mishap in December 2022, scored his first fifty in 15 months.

The in-form Warner slammed five boundaries and three maximums during his 35-ball 52, his 110th T20 fifty, which equalled Chris Gayle’s record of most fifty-plus scores in T20s.

Playing his first game this season, Shaw, who hasn’t been able to live up to his immense talent, once again reminded everyone of his boundary-hitting skills, smashing two sixes and four boundaries in his 27-ball 43.

However, pacer Matheesha Pathirana produced a sensational catch to dismiss Warner and then returned to strike twice in three balls to bring CSK back into the game.

But Pant, who has looked good in his two earlier innings, bide his time initially and then exploded to take them close to a 200-total.

Mitchell Marsh too blasted two fours and a six in his 12-ball 18 cameo.

Earlier, while Tushar Deshpande used his variations to good use to gave just eight in his first two overs, Deepak Chahar, who bowled his 3 overs in the powerplay, was milked by the DC openers.

It was mainly Warner who picked Chahar for the special treatment, depositing him twice into the stands on the leg side, punishing him for bowling into his pads.

He was particularly harsh on Chahar in the 5th over, as after a second six, he hit two fours on the off side to accumulate 18 off the over as DC made 42 in 5 overs.

Bowling the last over before powerplay, Mustafizur Rahman too was taken to the cleaners with Shaw hitting three successive fours as DC posted their highest powerplay score of 62-0 of this IPL.

Ravindra Jadeja was next welcomed with a six by Shaw before Warner pulled one across deep backward square leg for a boundary as 13 runs came off the over.

Pathirana bowled a good first over, hitting 145-plus consistently with his sling action.

However, Warner smacked Jadeja next over long-on before completing his fifty off 32 balls.

It took the brilliance of Pathirana to send him back as the Sri Lankan plucked the ball from thin air to complete a sensational catch, leaving Warner stunned as Mustafizur earned first blood.

Shaw smashed another six to take DC past the 100-run mark but Jadeja dismissed him next ball, inducing an edge as MS Dhoni did the rest for his 300th dismissal — the highest by a keeper in T20s.

With the two openers gone, the scoring rate dropped as skipper Pant struggled.

Pathirana then put up a show, uprooting the middle-stump of Marsh and then disturbing the timbers of Tristan Stubbs in a space of three balls to leave DC at 134 for 4 in 15 overs.

Pant then stepped up, plundering a four and a six off Mustafizur and then launched into Pathirana, clobbering him for a six and two fours in the 19th over before holing out in the deep.

Gaza Children Fly Kites To Escape Horrors Of War

Gaza Children Fly Kites To Escape Horrors Of War

Israel-Hamas war has been going on since October 7

Metres away from the concrete and steel fence separating the Gaza Strip from Egypt, 11-year-old Malak Ayad flies a paper kite high in the sky — a welcome distraction from the horrors of war.

“Every day I play with my brothers and cousins with kites next to the Egyptian border,” said the Palestinian girl, displaced from Gaza City with her family to the southern city of Rafah.

“When I do, I feel free and safe,” she added, gently manoeuvering her kite, which she calls “Butterfly”, back and forth across the border with a white string.

Her cousins and friends run along the fence trying, in vain, to get their kites to take flight, but a loud explosion in the distance makes them stop in their tracks.

“Quickly, the (Israeli) bombardment is getting closer,” said Malak’s uncle Mohammed Ayad, 24, urging the children to leave the area.

Malak quickly obeys, reeling in her kite and folding it, then rushes back to a tent where her family is taking shelter in the nearby Khir area.

“Playtime is over. When air strikes begin we run back home,” Malak said, trembling with fear.

The war began with Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack that resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign to destroy Hamas has killed at least 32,782 people, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza health ministry.

‘Trapped’

Malak Ayad and her family are among 1.5 million people, most of them displaced by the war, now living in Rafah, where Israel has vowed to carry a ground offensive as it pursues its campaign against Hamas.

Despite the war and the fear that grips her, Malak seems to be happy to fly her kite and dreams of life as it was before the war broke out on October 7.

“My kite flies to Egypt everyday while we are here trapped in Gaza,” said Malak, who wears a bracelet featuring the Palestinian flag.

“I don’t know when we will be able to return home,” she said, adding that her mother told her that her school has been hit by the Israeli army and “destroyed”.

Haitham Abu Ajwa, 34, who is also displaced from Gaza City, said kite flying “reminds me of my childhood”.

He too lives in a tent in Rafah with his wife and two boys, Mohammed, 5, and seven-months-old Adam

Flying kites helps to “free oneself of negative thoughts”, he said, and the border area with Egypt is “the ideal place to expel… the sadness and pain that we feel”.

“In the camps, you cannot feel free or comfortable,” said Abu Ajwa as he helped Mohammed fly a kite.

Dozens of children, some with their families, come daily to the border area in the afternoons to fly kites across the frontier.

Some start up conversations with Egyptian soldiers manning surveillance towers.

When Malak’s kite flew past the watchtower, one of the soldiers called out to her: “Well done, princess.”

The little girl thanked him with a wave and said, “I love Egypt. My wish is to travel there like my kite.”
