Mohamed Salah Caps Fightback As Liverpool Go Top Of Premier League Table

Mohamed Salah fired Liverpool to the top of the Premier League as the Egypt star’s clinical finish capped a stirring fightback to beat Brighton 2-1 on Sunday. Jurgen Klopp’s side were rocked by Danny Welbeck’s blistering strike after just 85 seconds at Anfield. Luis Diaz restored order with an equaliser later in the first half, before Salah netted after the interval to seal a vital victory. Salah’s third goal in his last three games was his 22nd in all competitions this term. Unbeaten in their last six league matches, Liverpool sit two points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who drew 0-0 with third-placed Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium just a few hours later.

Thanks to Salah, treble-chasing Liverpool are in the driving seat as they eye a record-equalling 20th English title — and first since 2020 — in Klopp’s final season.

“Being that calm in the decisive moment with the biggest chance we had from the best football we played, then that makes a real goalscorer so we are happy with everything,” Klopp said of Salah.

“Brighton’s centre-halves were outstanding and it was just a really good game, against an opponent you know it will be the hardest work.

“To defend them needs the highest intensity in English football and we did well. More possession, better possession, a really good rhythm.”

Unbeaten in their last 27 home league games, Liverpool are back in action at Anfield against lowly Sheffield United on Thursday.

After former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso confirmed he intends to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is a reported candidate to replace Klopp when the German steps down at the end of this term.

Klopp is a big fan of De Zerbi’s attacking philosophy and praised him as a “top coach” this week.

Asked after the game about the link to Liverpool, De Zerbi said: “I have another two years of contract. My focus is on Brighton this season, the next season.

“But before starting next season I would like to listen to the plan of the team. I think it is a serious thing.”

Playing for the first time since their painful FA Cup quarter-final defeat at Manchester United before the international break, Liverpool had a shocking taste of De Zerbi’s enterprising tactics after just two minutes.

Salah strikes

Brighton’s Simon Adingra broke quickly in a devastating counter-attack that caught Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley out of position.

When Virgil van Dijk’s scuffed clearance rolled to Welbeck just inside the penalty area, the Brighton forward lashed a strike into the top corner to leave Klopp shaking his head.

Salah was making his first league start since New Year’s Day after an injury-plagued beginning to 2024.

Looking to make up for lost time, Salah nearly grabbed the equaliser with a curler that whistled just wide.

The Egypt forward threatened again from Bradley’s cross, but he couldn’t keep his shot on target from a good position 10 yards out.

Liverpool’s dominance was rewarded in the 27th minute when Brighton failed to clear Salah’s header from a corner and Diaz volleyed home from close range.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister squandered a chance against his former club with a header that flashed narrowly wide early in the second half.

Dominik Szoboszlai fired past the far post from 20 yards, while Darwin Nunez was denied by Bart Verbruggen at the near post.

Wave after wave of Liverpool pressure crashed against Brighton’s defensive wall before De Zerbi’s men cracked in the 65th minute.

Mac Allister was catalyst with a perfectly-weighted pass that picked out Salah’s run into the area and the forward dispatched a composed low finish past Verbruggen.

In a tense finale, former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana should have punished his old team, but he rolled his shot wide to Klopp’s immense relief.

Opinion: Fight for economic equality

Excessive focus on poverty elimination has made policymakers overlook the innate discrepancies in the economy

Opinion: Fight for economic equality

By Samudrala VK

The depressing revelation by World Inequality Lab in its recent report stating that the income inequality in present day India is higher than that of during the British Raj or colonial epoch casts a gloomy picture of the state of the economy as a whole. Though the outlook of the report is not a shocking one going by the steps the Indian economy has adopted in its post-independent and post-reform periods, it is wise to take a cue from the report.

The report has rightly suggested that the top 1% of the economic ladder should be levied an additional 2 per cent in the form of a ‘Super Tax’. However, it is also important to look at the other side of India’s economic story.

Ever since India became an independent nation, policymakers have ignored the values and principles on which the freedom struggle was based. This tendency has aggravated in the post-reform age. Though values like self-respect and self-rule infused vibrancy into the freedom struggle, it was the economic front that formed the bedrock of this movement. Plunder of resources, economic inequalities, exploitation, famines and so forth forced the then intelligentsia to realise the need for independence. To say, it is upon the sweat and blood of India’s working class that the British Empire was built.

Access to Power

While the shift from feudal to modern capitalist to neo-liberal state in the Western world took over five centuries, the economic transition in India’s case happened just in a century. It is this sudden and radical shift that left the traces of yester economic systems in the subsequent stages of the economic evolution of the nation. The class that had access to power and economic resources in pre-British India and British India gradually metamorphosed into modern India’s bourgeoisie class thereby becoming the epicentre of political power in post-independent India.

Economic equality has never been on the minds of economists and policymakers. Excessive focus on poverty elimination made them overlook the innate discrepancies and distortions in the economy. As a result, the factors that contribute to economic inequality remain unaddressed. They have also failed to understand the wafer-thin difference between poverty and economic inequality.

Business-friendly State

Paltry implementation of land reforms, corporate-friendly policies under the guise of liberalisation, gradual withdrawal from social security measures under the token of governance and facilitation, destruction under the banner of development, crony-capitalist measures and tax cuts, and special incentives to industrialists in the name of business-friendly state have taken a toll on the economic health of the nation. It is worth mentioning that the trickledown theory propounded by capitalist economists is a pure humbug and hoax.

Excessive emphasis on economic growth numbers instead of overall progress, ruthless focus on competition rather than cooperation, and encouraging private investments rather than public ones have created an environment of rugged liberalism. Governments since the 1990s have been boasting their pro-capitalist policies and achievements rather than expressing a sense of remorse and adopting corrective measures. Moreover, the derailment of India’s economy from its socialist footings has made it highly vulnerable to the external shocks of the global economy.

The neo-liberal perception that higher taxes on wealth creators or the top brass of the economic ladder would be detrimental to economic progress has proven to be a pure lie. It is worth mentioning here that globalisation, what has been hailed as a panacea for all economic problems by the neo-liberal states, has benefitted their corporate cronies rather than the common man. In fact, it has hastened the process of the wealth concentration. The unhindered access to the markets across the globe is putting the sanctity of the modern state into question.

Tweaked Model

Ever since the advent of the neo-liberal state, environmental laws, labour laws and social and economic security measures have taken a back seat. They are being tweaked and codified to the benefit of the business class. Contractual and outsourcing employment systems have been contributing to the economic insecurity of the working class. Additionally, the psychological and cultural hegemony of neo-liberal economics has been depriving the masses of their economic and political rights. The prevailing economic discourse which solely rests on consumption and growth indices fails to recognise the debt that is hanging as an albatross around the common man’s neck. If one goes by the debt, it is easy to say that more than 80% of the global population is caught in modern-age poverty. At a time when education and health expenses are squeezing the major chunk of the common man’s income, it is important on the part of the state to bring them under public control. While both these are being viewed as important drivers that can push the poor out of the quagmire of poverty, contrarily, the expenses on both are obstructing the same in climbing up the economic and social ladder.

New Imperial Regime

It is also important to realise that seamless transnational economic flow is skewed towards the business class. The unregulated economic activity in the present-day world appears as an imperial regime of corporates, albeit without colonies. India with its huge market size and demographic advantage seems to be a lucrative destination for corporates across the world.

Coincidentally, the World Happiness Report released by the United Nations a couple of days ago positioned India at 126 out of 146 countries. Though the report excludes variables like unemployment and inequality in evaluating the index, it is important to note that the countries with higher economic equality occupied the top rankings. The higher the inequality in a nation, the higher the dissatisfaction among its citizens. All in all, the growing income inequality in the country calls for immediate action in the interest of its economic well-being in the long run.

IPL Points Table: DC Jump To 7th Place After 1st Win, CSK Slip Down To…

IPL 2024: Delhi Capitals defeat Chennai Super Kings by 20 runs© BCCI

Delhi Capitals registered their first win of IPL 2024 after they defeated Chennai Super Kings by 20 runs in Visakhapatnam. Opting to bat first, DC posted a whopping total of 191/5 in 20 overs with David Warner and Rishabh Pant hitting half-centuries. Later, DC restricted CSK at 171/6, despite MS Dhoni‘s quick show off 37 off 16 balls. It was a visual treat for all the Dhoni fans around the world as he smashed four boundaries and three sixes but it all went in vain as CSK ended up on the losing side.

With their first loss of the season, CSK have dropped down on the second spot of the points table with two victories in three matches and a net run-rate of +0.976, Kolkata Knight Riders have jumped to the top spot with two victories in two matches and a net run-rate of +1.047.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Earlier in the day, Gujarat Titans defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets and registered their second win of the season.

On the other hand, DC have jumped to the seventh spot with one victory in three matches and a net run-rate of -0.016.

Coming to the match, Rishabh Pant led from the front with his first IPL fifty since his comeback from a horror car crash as Delhi Capitals beat Chennai Super Kings by 20 runs on Sunday.

Captain Pant hit 51 off 32 balls after fellow left-hander David Warner smashed 52 and helped Delhi to 191-5 in Visakhapatnam — the adopted homeground for the Capitals due to the upcoming general elections.

But the fans in the south Indian city largely represented Chennai as they chanted (M.S. Dhoni) “Dhoni, Dhoni” — the former skipper obliging with an unbeaten 37 off 16 balls, including four fours and three sixes.

Delhi restricted Chennai to 171-6 for their first win of the season and hand their opponents a loss after two opening victories.

Khaleel Ahmed returned bowling figures of 2-21 and Mukesh Kumar took three wickets.

"Complete And Utter Failure": Thousands Rally Against Netanyahu Government

'Complete And Utter Failure': Thousands Rally Against Netanyahu Government

Protesters were waving blue and white Israeli flags and chanting “elections now”.

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in Jerusalem on Sunday against Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and against exemptions granted to ultra-Orthodox Jewish men from military service, in scenes reminiscent of mass street protests last year.

Protest groups, including some that led the mass demonstrations that rocked Israel in 2023, organised the rally outside parliament, the Knesset, calling for a new election to replace the government.

The protesters also want a more equal share in the burden of army service that binds most Israelis. Around 600 soldiers have been killed so far since the Hamas attack of Oct. 7 and the ensuing war in Gaza, the military’s highest casualty toll in years.

Israel’s N12 News said it appeared to be the largest demonstration since the war began. Haaretz and Ynet news sites said it drew tens of thousands of people.

Netanyahu’s cabinet has faced widespread criticism over the security failure of the Hamas attack on southern Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 taken hostage to Gaza.

“This government is a complete and utter failure,” said 74-year-old Nurit Robinson, at the rally. “They will lead us into the abyss.”

Israel’s war in the Palestinian enclave has aggravated a longstanding source of friction in society that is also unsettling Netanyahu’s coalition government – exemptions granted to ultra-Orthodox Jewish seminary students from service in the country’s conscript military.

With a March 31 deadline looming for the government to come up with legislation to resolve a decades-long standoff over the issue, Netanyahu filed a last-minute application to the Supreme Court last week or a 30-day deferment.

In an apparent accommodation, the Supreme Court gave government officials until April 30 to submit additional arguments. But, in an interim ruling, it also ordered a suspension of state funding for seminary students who would be liable for conscription from Monday.

Protesters were waving blue and white Israeli flags and chanting “elections now”.

At a news conference in Jerusalem, Netanyahu said he was confident a solution will be found. He also said that holding an election at the height of war, when he said Israel was so close to victory, would paralyse the country for months.

In Tel Aviv, some families of hostages and their supporters, blocked a main highway, protesting against what they described as Netanyahu’s failure to return their loved ones.

Iranian, Egyptian FMs discuss ties, Gaza over phone

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian (R) and his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry spoke over phone on March 31, 2024.

Foreign ministers of Iran and Egypt have held a new phone conversation to discuss efforts to expand relations between the two countries as well as the situation in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza.

Hossein Amirabdollahian and Sameh Shoukry spoke over the phone on Sunday evening, according to a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

The two ministers reviewed “positive developments” that have taken place in bilateral relations between Iran and Egypt in recent months, said the statement, adding that the two discussed solutions for the expansion of relations based on the results of a meeting between them in Geneva in late February and according to the will of the political leaders of the two countries.

They reiterated that a meeting between the presidents of Iran and Egypt in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November was an important step in efforts to elevate bilateral ties and agreed that Tehran and Cairo should maintain contacts and meetings in the future.

Iran and Egypt have established contacts over the past months in a bid to restore diplomatic relations that were cut months after Iran’s Islamic Revolution of 1979.

The statement said Amirabdollahian and Shoukry also discussed in their phone call the latest developments with regard to the Israeli aggression on Gaza while expressing concerns about the continued killing of women and children in the narrow strip of land.

They reiterated the need for further diplomatic and political efforts to force an end to Israel’s “insane attacks” on Gaza and said that a recent United Nations Security Council resolution should be implemented to allow humanitarian aid to reach people in all parts of Gaza.

The two top diplomats also renewed their opposition to any plan to forcibly displace the Palestinians from Gaza and urged international organizations to adopt effective measures to prevent an Israeli attack on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza where more than a million people have sought refuge from Israel’s attacks on other parts of the enclave.

During the phone call, Amirabdollahian touched upon visits earlier this week to Tehran by leaders of Palestinian resistance movements Hamas and the Islamic Jihad as he emphasized the significant role played by the resistance in the anti-Israeli war in Gaza.

No talk of new Gaza ceasefire negotiations yet: Hamas official

A senior official of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says there is no talk yet about any new round of indirect negotiations on a Gaza ceasefire.

Osama Hamdan, who also represents Hamas in Lebanon, made the remarks in an interview with the Qatar-based television network Al Jazeera on Sunday, after Egyptian and Israeli media reported earlier in the day that the next round of talks is set to begin today.

The Hamas official said the Israeli regime is seeking to obstruct the process.

Hamdan went on to say that the resistance group wants answers regarding stopping the ongoing aggression, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the return of the displaced, and the reconstruction of the besieged territory.

However, he said, the occupying regime has failed to provide guarantees in its responses.

The Hamas official said if “Israeli intransigence continues, the mediators’ efforts will face a dead end.”

He said the Israeli side only wants to recover its prisoners, and to openly continue its aggression, adding that the United States still contributes to covering up the regime’s intransigence.

Hamdan further emphasized that the resistance group rejects any aggression against the southern city of Rafah and is making every effort to prevent such a move.

“If the occupying regime continues its aggression, the resistance is ready for confrontation,” he said.

Multi-party negotiations on hammering out a truce agreement between Hamas and the regime have reportedly failed to yield any results.

Israel has outlined plans for a ground invasion in Rafah in southern Gaza, which potentially involves the evacuation of around 1.5 million citizens who are currently seeking shelter in the city.

The international community has expressed alarm over such plans, considering them to have further disastrous humanitarian implications.

More than six months into the hostilities, the regime has failed to achieve its objectives of “destroying Hamas” and finding Israeli captives, despite killing at least 32,780 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuring nearly 75,300 others.

About 130 of the 250 Israeli captives taken by Hamas during the October 7 operation are still in Gaza after a provisional truce deal in December saw the exchange of prisoners between the two sides.

Arunachal's Porters – Vital Links Between Polling Parties, Electors

Arunachal's Porters - Vital Links Between Polling Parties, Electors

ounting of votes for assembly polls is on June 2 and for Lok Sabha on June 4. (Representational)

Itanagar:

A remnant of the British Raj, the Auxiliary Labour Corps (ALCs), also known as porters, still act as vital links between election personnel and people in Arunachal Pradesh as they are tasked with carrying polling materials, ration items and transporting EVMs to remote areas of the mountainous state, officials said. Around 3,000 ALCs are being deployed this time to assist polling parties to reach 228 booths in the state, which are almost inaccesible they said.

“We are dependent on them to transport election materials to inaccessible polling stations where foot march is required,” Chief Electoral Officer Pawan Kumar Sain said.

Trekking the rugged and almost inaccessible terrains of the state, ALCs serve as a bridge between the government and the people and ensure that the polling process goes smoothly, Joint Chief Electoral Officer Liken Koyu said.

The ALCs were first appointed by the British to carry materials. After Arunachal Pradesh attained statehood in 1987, the regular appointment of ALCs was stopped. They are now recruited temporarily.

Services of ALCs are required at the time of transporting public distribution system (PDS) materials and opening new administrative centres during polls, Koyu said.

In 2019, the election office hired 2,100 ALCs, while 1,400 were deployed during the 2014 elections, the officials said.

“Around 3,000 ALCs will be inducted this time to assist polling personnel in 228 polling stations in the state,” he said Besides, casual labourers would also be deployed to assist election personnel.

The ALCs are being deployed by the respective district election officers (DEO), depending on the requirement, Koyu added.

Declaration of results gets delayed in several seats as EVMs are transported by ALCs to the counting centres, which generally involves more than three days of arduous trekking.

Arunachal Pradesh has 228 remote and almost-inaccessible polling stations, where election officials have to undertake extensive journeys on foot.

Of these, 61 will require a two-day walk, while seven will need three-day trekking.

In response to the logistical challenges, the state election machinery has planned to deploy a minimum of four ALCs for each of the 228 polling stations, Koyu said, acknowledging the pivotal role the unsung heroes play in facilitating the democratic process in the state.

Arunachal Pradesh will go to simultaneous polls for two Lok Sabha and 60 assembly constituencies on April 19.

Counting of votes for assembly polls would be held on June 2 and for Lok Sabha on June 4.

Injured persons have been shifted to a hospital, say officials. (Representational)

Lahore:

A Bengal tiger on Sunday injured two persons after it broke open its cage while being transferred to a city in Pakistan’s Punjab province, officials said.

Punjab Wildlife Department Director General Mudassar Riaz Malik told PTI that a resident of Multan, identified as Waqas Ahamd, had bought the Bengal tiger from Faizi in Lahore.

“On Sunday, when Waqas was shifting the big cat to Multan from Lahore it broke open its cage near Multan, some 350kms from Lahore, and entered the fields there,” he said, adding that the owner of the tiger informed the wildlife department about the incident.

“The department dispatched a team from Multan. After a hectic operation lasting several hours, the wildlife officials rescued it. Before the big cat was rescued it had injured two persons,” the DG said.

He added that the injured persons have been shifted to a hospital in Multan where their condition is stated to be out of danger.

The official said the Bengal tiger’s owner would be fined for transporting the big cat without informing the wildlife department.

He said the tiger was shifted to the Multan Zoo.
