British Model, 30, Dies After Botched Breast Enlargement Surgery In Spain

The clinic’s manager and anaesthetist have been arrested.

A 30-year-old British model and beautician died after undergoing a boob job in Spain, News.com.au reported. The incident happened in September 2023 when Donna Butterfield underwent two cosmetic operations at a private clinic in Palma, Majorca. Notably, she had a breast enlargement performed several years ago but had returned to have an imbalance corrected. The surgery cost her $11,650 (Rs 9,71,416).

However, the aspiring model, who had a pre-existing heart condition, suffered a heart attack, as a reaction to the anaesthetic and went into cardiac arrest. She was admitted to the intensive care unit at Son Espases University Hospital in Palma but died on September 14.

Her family said that all the preceding consultations had been conducted by email, and claimed that the clinic had taken very few precautions beforehand. A police investigation was launched after the woman’s family accused the cosmetic surgeons of malpractice.

According to the Majorcan newspaper Ultima Hora, the clinic’s manager and anaesthetist have been arrested. The manager, 69, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter as well as carrying out the surgery despite being disqualified.

According to the National Police, the procedure involved several irregularities. The first was that the health professionals agreed to practice a second cosmetic procedure without warning the patient of the risks. She suffered from a congenital heart defect which meant 25% of her heart did not function as well.

Moreover, the signed patient consent forms were written in Spanish and the patient didn’t know how to read Spanish.

A spokesman for Spanish National Police said, ”National Police officers have arrested a 69-year-old man responsible for managing a clinic in Palma where he also worked as a practitioner, for crimes of gross negligence manslaughter and breaching a medical ban following the death of a patient.

Our homicide unit began an investigation and after gathering together all the documentation related to the medical intervention and taking statements from health professionals, arrested the director of the clinic who was also a medical practitioner. Investigators have accused one of the other two health professionals who participated in the surgery of the same type of manslaughter crime as the clinic director.”

Notably, Ms Butterfield was a successful beauty entrepreneur with her own hair extension business under the name ‘Donna Bee’ and ‘BeeWeavible’. A close family member said, ”We’ll never get over it, we just have to learn to live with it.”

Iraqi Resistance strikes 'vital' Israeli military facility

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has struck a “vital” Israeli military facility lying far north in the occupied territories in continued support for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who are enduring a genocidal Israeli war.

The Iraqi umbrella group of anti-terror factions made the announcement in a statement on Sunday.

It specified the whereabouts of the target as the village of Eilabun, saying the facility was hit with “a barrage of drones.”

The Islamic Resistance concluded the statement by saying that the operation had been carried out “in solidarity with the people of Gaza.”

The coalition has been staging many such attacks since October 7, when the regime launched the war in response to al-Aqsa Storm, a surprise retaliatory operation by Gaza’s resistance movements against the occupied territories.

The military onslaught has so far killed more than 32,700 people, mostly women, children, and adolescents. Nearly 75,200 Palestinians have also been wounded.

Most recently, the Iraqi umbrella group said it had targeted the Ovda and Speer airbases in the occupied Palestinian territories, using drones.

Last Sunday, the coalition announced conducting a similar drone attack against “the headquarters building” of the Israeli ministry for military affairs in the occupied territories.

Indian-Origin Teen In UK Gets "Life-Changing" Cancer Treatment

Indian-Origin Teen In UK Gets 'Life-Changing' Cancer Treatment

Mr Thakkar, diagnosed with a form of leukaemia aged six.

London:

Yuvan Thakkar, an Indian-origin teenager diagnosed with cancer, says he is now able to enjoy the things he loves after life-changing treatment thanks to a fund set up by the UK’s state-funded National Health Service to make innovative therapies accessible to thousands of patients.

According to NHS England, 16-year-old Mr Thakkar from Watford near London was the first child in the UK to benefit from a pioneering CAR T therapy called tisagenlecleucel (Kymriah) thanks to its Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF).

It comes as the National Health Service (NHS) marks a milestone this weekend of 100,000 patients benefitting from early access to the latest and most innovative treatments with the help of CDF. The undisclosed cost of such treatments is covered by the fund.

“My life has changed so much since I received the CAR T therapy,” said Mr Thakkar, who thanked Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London for the “incredible” care he received.

“I remember I had to take so many trips to hospital and had long periods out of school… They have helped me recover to a state where I am able to enjoy so many things I love doing, such as playing snooker or pool, meeting friends and family, and going on wonderful holidays. It’s hard to imagine how things would have been if the treatment wasn’t available,” he said.

Mr Thakkar, diagnosed with a form of leukaemia aged six, received a treatment which modifies a person’s immune cells to recognise and attack cancer cells.

His treatment began in 2019, when he was 11 years old after he relapsed following other treatments such as chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. His mother Sapna said the family had received a “second chance” at life since the success of the treatment. Without the fast-track access available through the CDF, the 45-year-old said there may have been no other way for her son to receive the life-saving treatment.

“It felt like our prayers were finally answered. We still feel so grateful for this chance that’s been given to us and not a single day passes by when we haven’t felt thankful for all the doctors and nurses that have helped us through this long and difficult journey,” said Sapna Thakkar.

The CDF, which opened in its current form in July 2016, is used by NHS England to provide fast-tracked access for patients to all new cancer treatments approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), in addition to gathering further evidence of long-term effectiveness for promising drugs. It allows faster access to more than 100 drugs to help improve, extend or – in some cases – save their lives.

“Treating 100,000 cancer patients in England with innovative treatments through the Cancer Drugs Fund is a fantastic milestone for the health service to reach, and testament to the hard work of oncologists and their teams across the country,” said Professor Sir Stephen Powis, NHS national medical director.

“This vital fund is helping ensure patients get access to the most promising drugs far quicker than would otherwise be the case, helping people with cancer like Yuvan receive a life-changing intervention that sets a path for a longer, healthier life spent with family and friends,” he said.

The fund benefits people with common cancers, such as breast, lung, colorectal and prostate, as well as those with less common cancers, such as ovarian, cervical, kidney, skin, myeloma, lymphoma and leukaemia, and rare cancers, including thyroid and biliary tract.

The current CDF budget of GBP 340 million is 70 per cent more than the previous CDF and is used alongside NHS England’s Innovative Medicines Fund of GBP 340 million, which the health service said means a total of GBP 680 million is ringfenced for fast-tracking new medicines.

IDF kills four senior Hamas leaders in Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital

Tel Aviv: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have said that it had killed four senior Hamas leaders during the operations at Gaza City’s Al-Shifa hospital where several men belonging to the terror outfit were holed up.

The deceased have been identified as Raad Thabet, who according to IDF, is the head of the Hamas’s recruitment and supply acquisition and Mahmoud Khalil Zakzuk, who as per IDF statement, is the deputy commander of Hamas rocket unit in Gaza City.

The other two have been identified as senior Hamas operatives, Fadi Dweik and Zakaria Najib.

The IDF said that Dweik was a senior intelligence officer of the Hamas and was involved in the 2002 shooting incident at West Bank that led to the killing of four Israeli citizens.

Zakaria Najib, the IDF said, was a senior operative in Hamas’s West Bank headquarters and was involved in executing and planning attacks on Israel in the West Bank.

The IDF in a statement on Saturday night said that exchange of fire was continuing in Al-Shifa hospital premises and that its troops have killed around 200 Hamas operatives inside the hospital.

The statement also said that the IDF killed several Hamas gunmen on Saturday in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis area.

The army said that the Israel Air Force had also carried out aerial attacks in al-Amal and al-Quarara region mainly to support the ground invasion of the IDF.

Sources in Israel Defence Ministry told IANS that the IDF was conducting combing operations in Al-Shifa and Al-Nasser hospitals where several Hamas operatives are holed up even now.

Trump Video Of "Hog-Tied" Biden On Pickup Truck Draws Massive Flak

Trump Video Of 'Hog-Tied' Biden On Pickup Truck Draws Massive Flak

Trump has a long history of using dark and combative language and posting provocative images.

Washington:

Donald Trump drew criticism Saturday for a video on his Truth Social platform that featured an image of President Joe Biden “hog-tied,” as if he were being kidnapped.

The video, posted Friday afternoon, shows two pickup trucks driving down a highway, each displaying multiple pro-Trump signs and flags. On the tailgate of the second truck is an image of a prone Biden tied with his hands behind him.

Biden’s reelection campaign said the post by Republican candidate Trump — whose language has become increasingly caustic as he campaigns against Biden for the presidency — could lead to violence.

“This image from Donald Trump is the type of crap you post when you’re calling for a bloodbath or when you tell the Proud Boys to ‘stand back and stand by,’ Biden spokesman Michael Tyler told AFP, referring to the far-right militia involved in the January 6, 2021 assault on the US Capitol by Trump supporters.

He went on: “Trump is regularly inciting political violence and it’s time people take him seriously — just ask the Capitol police officers who were attacked protecting our democracy on January 6.”

The Trump campaign was unapologetic.

“Democrats and crazed lunatics have not only called for despicable violence against President Trump and his family, they are actually weaponizing the justice system against him,” spokesman Steven Cheung said.

The US Secret Service, charged with protecting present and former presidents, did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment.

Trump has a long history of using dark and combative language and posting provocative images.

He warned earlier this month of a “bloodbath” for the US auto industry — and, as some heard it, the nation as well — if Biden wins in November.

Trump in December accused migrants of “poisoning the blood” of Americans.

In November, he lashed into his political rivals, vowing to “root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country.”

That drew a response from Biden, who said Trump was using “language you heard in Nazi Germany.”

Turning the tables on Trump’s attacks, the 81-year-old Biden has recently mocked the Republican — four years his junior — as “old,” “out of shape” and in cognitive decline.

"Kohli Played 59 Balls To Reach 83": Ex-India Star's Subtle Dig At RCB

RCB lost to KKR in their IPL 2024 match© BCCI/Sportzpics

Former Indian cricket team batter Aakash Chopra took a cheeky dig at Royal Challengers Bangalore with an interesting anecdote involving Virat Kohli‘s knock against Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL 2024 match on Friday. Kohli scored his second consecutive half-century of the competition but it was not enough as the RCB bowling attack faltered under pressure against the explosive batting of Sunil Narine and Venkatesh Iyer. Chopra pointed out that while Kohli took 59 deliveries to score 83, KKR were off to a stunning start in the powerplay and ended up scoring 83 runs in 5.5 overs.

“When Sunil Narine opens, the template is absolutely clear – ‘Either I or you will not remain’. He plays in that fashion, tries to hit sixes. Everyone knows that you need to repeatedly bowl bouncers and yorkers, but if you don’t get success in that, just like Bengaluru didn’t get in the first six overs, he takes the match far away from your grasp,” he said during his analysis on YouTube.

Phil Salt was also there with him. Phil Salt hit 18 runs in the first over itself. He was brilliant. Just to put things in context, the opposing team bowled well but Kohli played 59 balls to reach 83 and Kolkata had already scored 85 in 5.5 overs. Whether it was Alzarri Joseph, Mohammed Siraj or Yash Dayal, everyone was hit a lot,” the former India cricketer added.

Chopra was also all praise for KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir whom he credited for moves like sending Narine to open the batting and using Andre Russell as a death-over bowler.

“I feel Gautam has given them a lot of confidence. Sunil Narine opening has Gautam Gambhir’s imprint. Andre Russell bowling at the death also has a little imprint of Gautam Gambhir. He is empowering them slightly and the same can be said about Venkatesh Iyer. He has been empowered to hit fours and sixes,” Chopra explained.

The airstrikes against TTP militants holed up deep inside Afghanistan reflect Pakistan’s duplicity on terrorism

Updated On – 25 March 2024, 03:03 PM

Editorial: Karma comes back

For a country that has made terrorism an instrument of state policy to push its strategic goals, Pakistan is now forced to taste its own medicine. The airstrikes against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants holed up deep inside Afghanistan reflect Pakistan’s duplicity on terrorism and demonstrate how nurturing terror elements can turn them into Frankenstein monsters. Unless Islamabad abandons its long-held binary narrative of ‘good terrorists, bad terrorists’ and turns over a new leaf, the country will continue to suffer the misery that its military establishment has inflicted on others in the past. Pakistan’s fighter jets recently struck at two provinces in Afghanistan, a country that it once fondly believed would provide strategic depth in its existential war against India. The offensive resulted in the death of five women and three children while the Pakistani foreign ministry said terrorists belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s Hafiz Gul Bahadur group were targeted after the outfit claimed responsibility for the March 16 attack on an army outpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in which seven personnel, including two officers, were killed. The infringement of Afghan airspace has triggered a war of words between the two countries, once seen as allies. Islamabad alleged that the recent wave of terrorism had the full support and assistance of Afghanistan, a charge denied by the Taliban regime in Kabul. The boot, it seems, is firmly on the other foot.

For over three decades, the same charges have been levelled against the ISI and the Pakistan army by India, Iran and the former Afghan governments led by Hamid Karzai and Ashraf Ghani. In a twist of irony, Pakistani launched airstrikes in areas that were once the ISI’s favourite breeding grounds in Afghanistan for exporting terror to Kashmir and other places. Now, the ISI says anti-Pakistan militants are using this rugged terrain as a safe haven. India has been a victim of terrorism exported by Pakistan through infiltration across the border. The TTP, set up in 2007 as an umbrella group of several militant outfits with the aim of imposing a strict version of Islam on the country, has ideological linkages with the Afghan Taliban, whom the Pakistani security establishment had nurtured for many years. Pakistan had expected that the Taliban regime that came to power in Kabul in August 2021 would stop the use of Afghan soil against Pakistan by expelling TTP operatives. However, it now says Kabul has refused to rein in the TTP. The TTP has gathered strength after the Taliban takeover of Kabul in August 2021. The group is aligned with the Taliban in Afghanistan and managed to gain tactical experience while fighting Afghan security forces alongside the Taliban during the US troop withdrawal. It has stood firm on its conditions of implementing Sharia in Pakistan and a demerger of tribal areas from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

"We Will Go Into Series With…": Confident Ashwin On Upcoming AUS Tests

File photo of Ravichandran Ashwin.© AFP

Star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is confident of India’s performance in the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia Down Under, starting late this year. Cricket Australia recently released the schedule of their upcoming home summer, which includes the visit of India for a five-match Test series with Perth to host the opening game. The series will commence on November 22, with further Tests to be held in Adelaide (day-night), Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney right up until the start of the New Year.

It will be the first time since the summer of 1991/92 that Australia and India have played a five-match series as part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which will provide both teams with a good opportunity to further cement their place in next year’s ICC World Test Championship final.

“Look, you want to stay in the contest all the time. You might not begin a series very well. You still need to be able to dig into that mental resolve to come back. The one thing I would say about Australia is that, like England, all these venues are standard venues. Like Melbourne, like Sydney. We know what to expect from there. Sometimes it can be challenging. Look, I think… this part of Indian cricket doesn’t do as well as it must in a way that we don’t welcome you to conditions that are extremely hard. That’s exactly what Australia are trying to do it. They are putting us in Perth first up. Because the change of pace is going to be different,” Ashwin said on Club Prairie Fire podcast.

“We will go into the series with the best possible intent. They are doing all it takes to start off the series. So, you never take an Australian team lightly. That’s because of the kind of experience they are going to have. Their bowling attack would probably have 500 Tests between them. We (the Indian team) might not have that sort of experience, but still I think the belief that we will take them on is going to be pretty high,” he added.
