Sunita Kejriwal to read Delhi CM’s message at Ramlila Maidan rally: AAP

New Delhi: Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, will join the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan and read the message sent by the CM from Enforcement Directorate’s (ED’s) custody, said AAP on Sunday.

Senior leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, and Uddhav Thackeray are expected to attend the rally organised to protest against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the ED in the excise policy case.

Other prominent leaders who are expected to be present at the Ramlila Maidan include Tiruchi Shiva (DMK), Derek O’Brien (TMC), Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), D. Raja (CPI), Farooq Abdullah (NC), Dipankar Bhattacharya (CPI-ML), Champai Soren (JMM), Kalpana Soren (JMM), and Aditya Thackeray (Shiv Sena-UBT), among others.

CM Kejriwal, who was arrested on March 21, faces allegations of direct involvement in a conspiracy related to the formulation of excise policy favouring specific individuals.

The Chief Minister, whose ED custody was extended till April 1 by Delhi court, is also accused of soliciting kickbacks from liquor businessmen in exchange for favours, as claimed by the probe agency.

'It's All Over': Bayern Defeat Sends Leverkusen 13 Points Clear

Bayern Munich lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, their first home “Der Klassiker” loss in a decade, allowing Bayer Leverkusen, who came back to win 2-1 over Hoffenheim, to go 13 points clear with seven games remaining. Leverkusen’s victory put the onus on Bayern in Saturday’s late match, but the German champions lost at home with Dortmund scoring goals in each half through Munich-born Karim Adeyemi and defender Julian Ryerson. Harry Kane had the ball in the net in the dying stages to give Bayern hope of a comeback, but the England captain’s goal was struck off for offside.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel sent “congratulations to Leverkusen”.

Asked if the title race was over, Tuchel replied “of course”, saying “it’s self-evident, clear”.

Bayern defender Joshua Kimmich was livid and publicly criticised his team.

“I wonder how we can put in such a performance in a game like this. It’s completely incomprehensible.

“In the second half you had the feeling that nothing was at stake, it was like a friendly.

“We need to go home and question ourselves.”

Dortmund’s first league win in Munich in 3,641 days, dating back to 2014 when Jurgen Klopp was in the dugout, took them three points clear of RB Leipzig and back into fourth place with the battle for the Champions League intensifying.

The win in Munich “took too long” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.

“We had a bit of luck, but we worked hard for it,” Terzic told Sky.

Earlier on Saturday, Maximilian Baier gave Hoffenheim a 1-0 lead at Leverkusen.

But with this season’s unbeaten record in serious danger a day after Xabi Alonso pledged to stay on as coach for another year, the league leaders hit back.

Robert Andrich levelled in the 88th minute before an injury-time Patrik Schick volley sealed another remarkable comeback win.

Leverkusen’s late win continued their record of victories in the dying moments this season.

Alonso’s side have scored late to beat Augsburg, Leipzig, Stuttgart in the German Cup and Qarabag twice against in the Europa League.

“I was always optimistic,” Alonso told reporters. “We said at half-time that one goal is important. Everything can change in one moment.

“We have a winner’s mentality — we built that for ourselves this season.”

– Alonso ‘not going anywhere’ –

“We kept fighting and kept believing until the end,” Leverkusen goalscorer Andrich said to Sky.

“I had no doubt we’d score at least one today. I knew eventually one of our shots had to go in.”

The midfielder, who stood alongside his coach as the team celebrated in front of the home fans after the match, said Alonso told the players on Friday he would stay beyond the season.

“He said he wasn’t going anywhere — he said he’d stay here.

“The timing he chose was very good. Now we can keep pushing and hopefully achieve something great this season.”

Dortmund’s win meant RB Leipzig’s bid for a Champions League spot took a hit, after the German Cup holders played out a scoreless draw at home against lowly Mainz despite dominating possession and territory.

The home side were twice denied in the opening half, with an eighth-minute handball penalty overturned by VAR and a Lois Openda goal chalked off for offside.

“I can’t hear another word about expected goals — we just didn’t take our chances,” lamented Leipzig’s David Raum.

Champions League regulars for the past decade, RB Leipzig and Dortmund face off in the league in late April at the Red Bull Arena.

New Wolfsburg manager Ralph Hasenhuettl, the former Southampton coach, claimed victory in his first match in charge, 2-0 at Werder Bremen.

Bremen were reduced to 10 men just before half time following a last-man foul from Anthony Jung. Maxence Lacroix put the Wolves in front shortly afterwards.

Lacroix was sent off in the second half, but Wolfsburg’s Lovro Majer scored to seal the win.

Freiburg took a step towards European qualification in long-serving coach Christian Streich’s final season at the club with a 3-0 win at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The Black Forest side were in full control against struggling Gladbach, Michael Gregoritsch, Merlin Roehl and Ritsu Doan all scoring goals.

Union Berlin held Eintracht Frankfurt to a 0-0 away draw, picking up a valuable point to go nine clear of the relegation spots.

Pakistan PM Bans Red Carpets At Official Events: Report

The notification stated that red carpets would now be exclusively reserved for diplomatic receptions.

Islamabad:

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to impose a ban on the use of red carpets at official events, ARY News reported.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the practice of laying out red carpets during the visits of federal ministers and senior officials, the Prime Minister made his stance clear.

According to the Cabinet Division, the ban on red carpets has been enforced in line with the Prime Minister’s instructions, as reported by ARY News.

The notification stated that red carpets would now be exclusively reserved for diplomatic receptions.

In a recent development, PM Shehbaz Sharif and members of the federal cabinet have collectively decided to forgo their salaries and perks as part of the government’s austerity drive.

Last month, PM Shehbaz stressed the paramount importance of austerity measures for the government.

Earlier, President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari had declined to accept his salary and perks, citing the economic challenges facing the nation, ARY News reported.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said that Pakistan faced one of the worst economic crises in its history in 2023, with poverty, inflation and unemployment soaring, jeopardising millions of people’s rights to health, food and an adequate standard of living, Dawn newspaper reported.

In its 740-page ‘World Report 2024’, made available on Friday, the HRW reviewed human rights practices in more than 100 countries, and observed that the insistence of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on austerity and the removal of subsidies without adequate compensatory measures resulted in additional hardship for low-income groups in Pakistan.

Pakistan remained exceedingly vulnerable to climate change and faced rates of warming considerably above the global average, making extreme climate events more frequent and intense, according to the report.

Bopanna Shatters Another Record, Clinches Miami Open Men's Doubles Title

Indian tennis great Rohan Bopanna created history as he and his partner Matthew Ebden defeated Croatia’s Ivan Dodic and American Austin Krajicek 6-7 6-3 10-16 to clinch the Miami Open title. In the process, Bopanna, aged 44, became the oldest man to win a Masters 1000 title on the ATP circuit. The tennis star broke his own record, having created it last year by winning the Indian Wells title. The Miami Open win also enabled Bopanna to become the second Indian since Leander Paes to reach the finals of all nine ATP Masters 1000 events.

Bopanna and Ebden had a sloppy start to the game as they lost the first set by 6-7. However, the Indo-Aussie pair kept their nerves cool and made a solid comeback in the match. In the second set, Bopanna-Ebden sealed a 6-3 win. Meanwhile, in the third and deciding set, they dominated over their opponents and clinched a 10-6 win to end the game in their favour.

Earlier, in the semi-final round, Bopanna-Edben entered into the final after beating Spain’s Marcel Granollers and his Argentine partner Horacio Zeballos by 6-1 and 6-4.

In the semi-final match of the Miami Open, they dominated the game from the very first moment. In the first set, the Indo-Aussie duo clinched a 6-1 win. In the second set, the opponents tried to make a comeback but Bopanna and his teammate kept their nerves cool and sealed a 6-4 win.

In the Australian Open held this year, the duo defeated Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5, in a thrilling final. It was Bopanna’s second career Grand Slam title and his first in men’s doubles. His previous Grand Slam victory came in mixed doubles with Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada at the 2017 French Open.

Bopanna, who made his 17th Australian Open appearance in this edition, comfortably wrapped up his maiden Grand Slam men’s doubles title victory. Aged 43 years, 329 days, he also became the oldest Grand Slam champion.

The Indian tennis player is also the third Indian man in the Open Era to win a major men’s doubles title, following Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi. He also became the world’s first-ranked player following the title win.

Nonagenarian found murdered in his house in Lucknow

Lucknow: Prem Narain Agarwal, 92, a retired Jal Nigam accountant, was strangled to death and his house ransacked by unidentified miscreants who broke into his house in Sarvodaya Nagar in Lucknow.

Agarwal lived alone in the house after retiring as a senior accountant at Jal Nigam.

The incident came to light when a former tenant visited him on Saturday evening. She found the body in the veranda with a towel tied around his neck. She immediately alerted the neighbours who called the police that came with a dog squad and a forensic team for investigation.

There were signs of ransacking, with cupboards left open and belongings scattered across the rooms, said police. Initial probe suggested that the robbers resorted to violence when Agarwal resisted the robbery attempt.

The victim’s brother-in-law, Rajiv Agarwal, has filed a formal complaint with the police.

Meanwhile, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Abhijit Shankar, DCP, North Zone, said “A suspect has been identified with the help of CCTV footage, and teams have been formed to arrest him.”

How LSG's Mayank Yadav Pinned PBKS Batters With Fiery 150kmph Deliveries

LSG pacer Mayank Yadav© X (Twitter)

The Indian Premier League match between Lucknow Super Giants and Pujab Kings on Saturday saw a new hero arise, as debutant pacer Mayank Yadav outfoxed PBKS batters with his pace and precision. Mayank emerged as the player for the match for his side, picking up three wickets as Lucknow secured a 21-run win over Punjab. With his figures of 3/27, Mayank kept PBKS batters’ scoring rate under check, picking the wickets of Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma.

The 21-year-old speedster consistently bowled deliveries over the 150 kmph mark. One of those deliveries clocked 155.8 kmph, setting the record for the quickest ball to be bowled this season.

Following the game, Mayank said in the post-match presentation, “I have always heard from others that there is nervousness in debuts but that goes away after the first ball. My plan was to not be under too much pressure, to bowl at the stumps and to use the pace as much as possible. There was the thought of mixing up the pace initially but the wicket helped and the skipper told me to bowl quick. The debut wicket was the favourite. Coming off the injury last season was tough, I would set my goal to debut at a young age but injuries were a setback.”

Mayank has played two first-class matches, 17 List-A games and 11 T20 matches. He represents Delhi at the domestic level, having made his List-A debut in 2021 and his first-class debut in 2022. He was chosen as the ‘Player of the Match’ for his spell of 3/27, getting wickets of Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma.
