Baltimore Tragedy Highlights Role Of Migrants In US Workforce

Six Latino workers, fixing potholes when the Baltimore bridge was hit, have died (AFP)

Los Angeles:

The death of six Latino workers who were fixing potholes when a Baltimore bridge collapsed highlights the crucial role immigrants play in keeping America running, say advocates.

And it stands in stark contrast to the rhetoric of populists like Donald Trump, who cast them as criminal invaders ruining the country.

“Migrants come and do the jobs that Americans don’t want to do,” said Luis Vega, an activist and former construction worker.

The work is too hard, the hours are too long, or the conditions are too difficult.

“Who here wants to clean hotel rooms? Who wants to work under the hot sun? Who wants to be in the fields?” said Vega.

A team of eight men was doing road maintenance overnight Monday into Tuesday on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when a huge container ship smashed into a support pillar, sending almost the entire span crashing into the Patapsco River.

Two were pulled alive from the water, but six died; brothers, husbands, and fathers from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.

“Immigrants — we get the job done,” said senior White House adviser Tom Perez, himself a Latino.

“The six people who perished, the two others who survived… this is America, the immigrants (were) repairing potholes.”

The tragedy comes at a time many Latinos feel they are under assault from sections of the political class, as the United States ramps up for a bitter presidential election in November between Trump and incumbent Joe Biden.

Trump’s stridently anti-immigrant campaign includes suggestions that, if elected, he will embark on a mass expulsion of people he blames for crime and drug addiction he says are wracking America.

“The former president doesn’t see how much damage he does with his poison,” said Vega.

“Terrorists don’t sneak over the US-Mexico border; they fly in on a visa.”

The people who pay traffickers to smuggle them across the hostile deserts of the US Southwest are the people who end up doing the dirty and difficult jobs that Americans depend on.

“In 2020, when we had the Covid pandemic… no one wanted to work closely with another person,” said Vega.

“So who did the work? The cleaning in the hospitals? Harvesting the food? It was the immigrants who risked their lives.”

High Risk

Those risks, even if they are not always fatal, as they were for the Baltimore bridge workers, are all too real.

In Arizona the legal minimum wage is $14.35 an hour, but, says Javier Galindo, a contractor in Tucson, immigrant workers will earn only $80 to $100 per day, sometimes for 10 or 12 hours of work.

“You know what time you come in, but not what time you will leave,” he says.

Poverty and desperation force migrants to accept these wages, and to work in conditions that can be fatal, such as high temperatures.

According to official numbers, Latino immigrants comprised 8.2 percent of the United States workforce in 2020-2021 but accounted for 14 percent of workplace deaths.

The total number of deaths has also risen, up 42 percent over the decade to 2021, with 727 Latinos dying on the job that year.

Root-and-branch reform of migration into the United States, including regularizing pathways to work, would help to reduce this toll, say activists.

But it would also alleviate what many say is a desperate shortage of labor.

“There is a lack of manpower,” says Galindo, whose business was badly hit by border closures during the Covid pandemic.

The 48-year-old began his working life at just 14 years old, clambering over rooftops.

“You’ll never see a white person doing that job,” he said.

In the two decades since he started his company, only one white American ever knocked on his door asking for a job as a driver.

“He didn’t last long,” laughs Galindo. “He walked off the job.”

In his region, he says, the construction sector depends almost entirely on immigrants, with the undocumented playing a key role.

It is a feeling shared widely.

“If we only hired people with the proper papers, things would go very badly for us,” one Arizona contractor told AFP.

“We wouldn’t be able to build what is being built in this city if it weren’t for undocumented workers.”

Marry Again Now If You Want, Or Face Jail After UCC: Himanta Sarma To MP

Marry Again Now If You Want, Or Face Jail After UCC: Himanta Sarma To AIUDF Chief

Badruddin Ajmal is the MP from Dhubri.

Weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a dig at AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and said that if the Dhubri MP wants to marry again, he should do so before the polls or face arrest. Mr Sarma has said the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in the state after the Lok Sabha polls and polygamy would become illegal.

Mr Ajmal, who is contesting from the Dhubri constituency again, said recently, “People in the Congress and Rakibul Hussain (his Congress opponent in the seat) said that I have become old. But I still have so much strength that I can get married. I can do so even if the chief minister doesn’t want me to, that’s how much strength I have.”

Speaking on the sidelines of a rally on Saturday, the Assam chief minister said, “He (Badruddin Ajmal) should marry now. After the elections, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in Assam. If he marries after that, he will be arrested.”

“If he (Mr Ajmal) invites us now, we will also go because it’s not illegal so far. As far as I know, he has one wife. He can marry two or three more, but we will stop polygamy right after the elections. The entire draft is ready,” he added.

A Uniform Civil Code refers to a common set of laws that are applicable to all Indian citizens and are not based on religion in dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, among other personal matters.

Mr Sarma has repeatedly said his government will be bringing in legislation on a Uniform Civil Code. His remarks became more frequent after the Uttarakhand Assembly passed a UCC bill last month.

Assam will vote in the Lok Sabha polls in three phases – on April 19, April 26 and May 7. Results will be declared on June 4.

After Arvind Kejriwal's Arrest, INDIA Bloc's Mega Show Of Strength Today

After Arvind Kejriwal's Arrest, INDIA Bloc's Mega Show Of Strength Today

The Congress said 27-28 parties are involved in the rally

New Delhi:
After the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP has organised a mega rally in Delhi today, which will be attended by key leaders of the Opposition INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Akhilesh Yadav.

Here Are The Top 10 Points In This Big Story:

  1. The ‘Loktantra Bachao’ (Save Democracy) rally, which will be held at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital, has been organised after the arrest of Mr Kejriwal in the Delhi liquor policy scam last week but is being seen as a show of strength and unity by the INDIA bloc ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

  2. The opposition is expected to speak out strongly against what it calls the BJP’s misuse of central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate, CBI, and the Income Tax Department. The issue has taken centre stage after the arrests of Mr Kejriwal and former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, and the tax notices issued to the Congress, including one for Rs 1,800 crore which was sent on Friday.

  3. Some of the leaders in attendance will be Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, senior party leader Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Senior RJD leader and former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav. Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, and the DMK’s Tiruchi Siva.

  4. The Trinamool Congress, which had jolted the alliance by deciding to go it alone in West Bengal for the Lok Sabha polls, is also likely to send a representative. The party’s leader in the Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien, is expected to share the stage with representatives from the Left parties, including Sitaram Yechury of the CPM, which is his party’s bitter rival in West Bengal.

  5. From the AAP, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will be at the rally with other senior leaders. Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal is expected to be present and Hemant Soren’s wife, Kalpana Soren, will also attend. Ms Kejriwal and Ms Soren had met on Friday and said they have decided to “take the fight forward together”.

  6. It is unclear whether Ms Kejriwal, who has taken a more public role after her husband’s arrest and has been accused by BJP leaders of preparing to take over the chief minister’s chair, will speak at the rally.

  7. The Congress has said the rally will send a “strong message” to Lok Kalyan Marg, where the Prime Minister’s residence is located, that the BJP-led government’s “time is up”. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “It is not a person-specific rally. That is why it is called Loktantra Bachao rally. This is not one party’s rally, about 27-28 parties are involved. All constituents of the INDIA ‘janbandhan’ will be taking part in the rally.”

  8. The AAP has received permission from the authorities to hold the rally with more than 20,000 people. AAP’s Punjab working president, Budh Ram, said the party has set a target of over 1 lakh people from the state participating in it.

  9. The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory and said restrictions and diversions will be in place on several roads from 9 am to 3 pm today. Commuters have been advised to avoid the routes and use public transport, especially the Metro, as far as possible.

  10. The BJP has maintained that both Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate and the tax notices to the Congress were the result of the agencies acting independently and following legal procedures. It has also hit out at the AAP for insisting on the Delhi chief minister running the government from jail.

Opinion: Drive Defence with startups

Defence entrepreneurship can lead to a stronger, more adaptive and technologically advanced sector

Updated On – 25 March 2024, 03:14 PM

Opinion: Drive Defence with startups

The contribution of the defence sector to the nation is indispensable and we owe our very best energies to it. Yet, in the entrepreneurial world, conversations about defence are infrequent, scattered and staggered. While there is a lot of talk about businesses contributing to the nation, there needs to be talk about how entrepreneurship can enrich specific components of nation- building, defence being one of them.

The avenues for the same are many as entrepreneurship within the defence sector can involve various aspects, such as developing innovative technologies for defence systems, creating cybersecurity solutions, supplying specialised equipment or providing consulting services for strategic planning. It indubitably requires a deep understanding of defence needs, compliance with regulations, and a focus on security and efficiency. Let us look at these propositions and ideas in some detail.

Agile Startups

Entrepreneurship for defence is not just something which should be an ethical imperative for citizens but also an actual necessity. Businesspersons can make all the difference when it comes to equipping the defence forces with the best. Encouraging more entrepreneurial activity in this domain can make things infinitely better for all stakeholders as startups tend to be generally more agile and adaptable than larger contractors. They are able to quickly pivot to address emerging threats or evolving defence needs, implementing solutions efficiently without the bureaucracy often associated with larger organisations. Furthermore, several defence startups can also specialise in niche areas, focusing on particular technologies or solutions. This specialisation can enable them to emerge as formidable experts in their field and deliver highly unique products or services tailored to specific defence requirements.

Startups, in a particularly beneficial way, can also offer cost-effective solutions compared to established defence companies. Their favourable aspects include streamlined operations and innovative approaches which can provide cost savings for defence agencies while delivering high-quality products. Startups do particularly well in cycles of rapid prototyping and development, allowing for fast and frequent iterations as well as testing of new technologies or concepts. This fast pace of innovation can prove instrumental in addressing emerging threats or adapting to capricious defence landscapes.

Strategising, Specialisation

Essentially, an entrepreneurial push into the defence sector requires strategising and a clear understanding of the market. There is a need to appraise the specific requirements, gaps, and emerging trends within the industry and identify areas where innovation or improvement is required. Simultaneously, it is necessary to look for niches or areas where an entrepreneurial venture can offer unique solutions or products, and it could involve a wide range of areas such as cybersecurity, optimisation of logistics and artificial intelligence- driven defence systems.

Specialisation is a keyword when we think of how defence entrepreneurship encompasses several domains. Startups working in cybersecurity can employ advanced encryption methods, develop threat detection systems, secure communication platforms and software solutions to protect sensitive information from cyber threats. Companies focusing on drone technology can design and manufacture unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with enhanced capabilities for reconnaissance, surveillance or combat purposes, massively enhancing military intelligence as well as operations.

Simultaneously, startups engaged in material sciences can create better materials for armour, protective gear or vehicle components, providing protection and durability for military personnel and equipment. Entrepreneurs leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning can create systems that analyse tremendous amounts of data for important processes like predictive analysis or optimising crucial defence operations such as maintenance for military hardware. Some startups, may, in fact, focus on biotechnology to develop advanced medical solutions, including trauma care, pharmaceuticals and treatment of wounds to address particular requirements of military healthcare.

These specialised areas demonstrate how defence entrepreneurship ventures can cater to various specific needs within the sector, offering innovative, creative and unprecedented solutions to enhance security and effectiveness in military operations.

However, as entrepreneurs who are willing to step into this world, we must also be cognizant of the challenges inherent in such a venture. Strict regulations and compliance standards in the defence industry can create barriers for startups, mandating staunch adherence to complex procurement processes, security clearances as well as stringent quality control measures.

It is noteworthy that defence contracts often involve lengthy sales cycles due to the complex nature of negotiations, evaluations, and approvals within government agencies and defence organisations as well. This extended timeframe can easily strain the resources for startups, particularly the newer and smaller ones. It is important to not forget that developing defencerelated technologies or solutions necessitates substantial initial investment. Securing funding for research, development and compliance can be a gruelling task for startups, especially when competing against established contractors.

 Overcoming Hurdles

On a related note, accessing the defence market can be particularly daunting for newcomers. Established defence contractors tend to rule over the market, making it challenging for new startups to enter the fray and gain the trust of defence agencies. Reliance on contracts for revenue can lead to vulnerability if contracts are delayed, cancelled or not renewed, affecting the stability and growth of defence startups and, therefore, sustained dialogue with stakeholders is necessary.

Finally, maintaining security standards is paramount in the sector and startups must invest significantly in ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and security of their products, technologies and data, which can be both expensive and challenging. Balancing the protection of intellectual property while collaborating with government entities or larger defence contractors can be difficult as well.

These hurdles can be overcome with planning, collaboration and a deep understanding of the defence sector. Despite these difficulties, we must remember that enhanced technological capabilities and innovative solutions resulting from defence entrepreneurship bolster and galvanise national security by providing robust defence systems and strategies. Defence entrepreneurship also fosters and consolidates economic growth by generating employment opportunities, supporting technological advancements and catalysing the development of related industries, thereby boosting the overall economy. It also facilitates collaboration between startups, established defence firms, eminent research institutions as well as government agencies. These incredible partnerships can lead to knowledge-sharing, transfer of technology and collaborative efforts that can benefit the entire defence ecosystem at once.

Defence entrepreneurship can, therefore, lead to a stronger, more adaptive and technologically advanced defence sector, benefiting both national security and the broader economy. It is our turn to let our business acumen translate into benefits for those who protect our nation and hold our glory and pride.

"Brings Smile": Tendulkar Shares Video Of Girl Playing Cricket In Sopore

Sachin Tendulkar, Indian cricket team legend, recently visited Kashmir and was enamoured by the beauty of the place.  The beauty and people’s exceptional hospitality in the place left the Master Blaster in awe. The great Indian player, popularly known as the ‘God of Cricket’ treated his fans with a stunning video from his trip to Kashmir. In the video he posted on social media X (formerly Twitter), he was seen enjoying the snowfall in Gulmarg with his wife Anjali Tendulkar and daughter Sara Tendulkar.

Tendulkar reminisced about the beauty of the snow-covered nation in a post that featured a video and praised the locals for their warm welcome. “Jammu and Kashmir will remain a beautiful experience etched in my memory. There was snow all around but we felt warm because of people’s exceptional hospitality,” Tendulkar posted on X.

Now, Tendulkar has posted the video of a young girl playing cricket in Sopore, Kashmir. “Always good to see young girls playing cricket. Watching videos like these brings a smile to my face,” he wrote along with the post.

Recently, Tendulkar had highlighted the talent and passion of differently abled cricket from Kashmir Amir Hussain Lone.

The cricket icon also visited a cricket bat manufacturing plant. For those who don’t know, Kashmiri willow bats have a global reputation for excellence. Tendulkar also lauded the craftsmanship of the Kashmir Willow bats, describing them as great examples of ‘Made in India’ products. The legendary cricketer also encouraged people to visit Jammu and Kashmir, which he referred to as “a precious jewel of Incredible India,” as well as other places in India.

“The Kashmir Willow bats are great examples of “Make in India, Make for the World.” They have travelled across the globe, and now I recommend people across the globe, and India, to come and experience Jammu & Kashmir, one of the several jewels of @incredibleindia,” Tendulkar concluded.

'Abusive': Peru President Slams Raids At Her Home Over Luxury Watches Probe

“I took office with clean hands and thus I will retire from the presidency in 2026,” she said.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte on Saturday said she would not resign after her house was raided as part of inquiries into possible illicit enrichment and failure to declare ownership of luxury watches.

Some 20 officials from the public prosecutor’s office and 20 police raided Boluarte’s house on Friday night, and the palace on Saturday morning.

“I took office with clean hands and thus I will retire from the presidency in 2026,” she said at a press conference, calling the raids a “disproportionate” measure and “abusive.”

Boluarte’s house is located in the Lima district of Surquillo, a few kilometres from the palace where she works.

“Personnel from the palace provided all the facilities for the diligence requested,” the presidency said on social media platform X, adding that it was carried out “normally and without any incident.”

However, Peruvian Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen also criticized the raids. “The political noise that is being made is serious, affecting investments and the entire country,” he wrote on X. “What has happened in the last few hours is disproportionate and unconstitutional actions.”

Two weeks ago, prosecutors began preliminary inquiries following a media report by internet program La-Encerrona that the president possessed several Rolex watches.

The inquiry intended to establish whether there were grounds for a formal investigation of the president.

Boluarte, in office since December 2022, has acknowledged that she owns Rolex watches, which she said she had bought with money she earned since she was young.

The prosecutor’s office had tried unsuccessfully last Wednesday to conduct a check of the watches at Boluarte’s office, but her lawyers said there was a clash of diary appointments and sought to reschedule the appointment.

The inquiry into Boluarte is the latest in a long history of probes into Peruvian presidents and senior officials.

"By 2026 No Hindu Will Remain In Assam Congress": Himanta Sarma

'By 2026 No Hindu Will Remain In Assam Congress': Himanta Sarma

He stated that the political parties are under the people and they must seek their blessings.

Guwahati:

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in the country, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, saying that Hindus won’t remain in the Assam Congress by 2026.

He said, “By 2026, there will be no more Hindus in the Assam Congress and almost all the Muslims will leave the Congress by 2032. We will open a branch at Rajiv Bhawan as Mahanagar BJP. Many Congress leaders will join the BJP tomorrow.”

The statement by the Assam Chief Minister was made as he visited the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati on Saturday and attended a crucial meeting to take stock of the preparedness for Lok Sabha polls.

“A meeting of the Prabharis of 126 assembly constituencies was held at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati. Three members of Congress joined the BJP on Saturday. Others will join the BJP on Sunday. I will go to Majuli and my election campaign will start in Majuli on April 1 with a cycle rally,” Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Talking about the welfare of Muslim society in the state, the Assam Chief Minister said, “I am trying to work to reform their society. Many Muslim youths are supporting me, as you can see on Facebook and they all welcome this. No one opposes it.”

On the other hand, talking about the Jorhat parliamentary constituency, the Assam Chief Minister said that the BJP will win the Jorhat seat. “A section is trying to create an atmosphere against me, but the ground reality is different,” he added.

“Why two right and left hands of the Congress candidate (Gaurav Gogoi) have left the party and joined the BJP because they know that there is no possibility of winning a chance,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

He stated that the political parties are under the people and the political parties must seek their blessings.

“The BJP will take the lead in 105 out of 126 assembly constituencies in the state. I am very confident that people will vote for us for the development work done by the government,” the CM added.

Islamic Jihad to Press TV: Resistance dashed Israel's hopes of swift victory

The Islamic Jihad’s deputy chief tells Press TV that the resistance movements in the Gaza Strip dashed the Israeli regime’s hopes of swift victory in the coastal territory, which is enduring a genocidal United States-backed war by Tel Aviv.

Mohammad al-Hindi, deputy secretary-general of the Gaza-based resistance movement, made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Press TV on Saturday.

“In the beginning of the battle, Israel expected that the Palestinians would lose. They carried out shellings and airstrikes against the residential areas in Gaza and thought that the war was over,” he said.

“But then, they were forced to fight in the northern Gaza. And then, they said they had defeated the resistance in [the city of] Khan Younis in the south, but later they found the presence of the Palestinian fighters there, who fired rockets towards the Israeli enemy,” Hindi added.

“Israel did not expect that the spirit of the Palestinian resistance would be so high. They realized that the Palestinians in Gaza are ready to sacrifice and bear all the hardships in order to continue fighting.”

The Israeli regime began the war on October 7 in response to a retaliatory operation staged by Gaza’s resistance groups.

The military onslaught has so far killed more than 32,700 people, mostly women, children, and adolescents. Nearly 75,200 Palestinians have also been wounded.

Hindi went on to say that the regime and the United States — Tel Aviv’s biggest supporter — were after weakening the resistance, and destroying Gaza’s infrastructure to forcibly displace Palestinians from their homes.

He, however, added that Tel Aviv and Washington had stopped short of realizing all of the goals that they had been seeking to achieve through the war.

Concluding his remarks, the resistance official expressed confidence that after the end of the warfare, the coastal sliver “will be under the full control of Palestinians.”
