18 Palestinians killed in unsafe aid airdrop, Gaza govt. holds US, Israel ‘fully responsible’

The Gaza Government Media Office says at least 18 Palestinians have been killed as a result of unsafe humanitarian airdrop by the United States and its allies on the Gaza Strip.

Washington and Tel Aviv are “fully responsible” for the continuation of such crimes in the besieged territory, the office said in a statement on Tuesday.

12 of the Palestinians drowned and six died due to stampedes for retrieving the packages in the sea off the coast of the northern Gaza Strip.

The statement condemned such operations and called for an immediate end to airdrop landings carried out by the US and its allies.

“We call for an immediate halt to aid airdrop operations in this offensive, incorrect, inappropriate, and ineffective manner, and we demand the immediate and swift opening of the land crossings to allow humanitarian aid into our Palestinian people who suffer from hunger and a severe shortage of food for the sixth consecutive month.”

“We hold the American administration, the international community, and the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the continuation of these combined crimes, which the world has been powerless to stop and put an end to amid ongoing operations of starvation, killing, and genocide.”

Denouncing the Israeli blocking of crossings into Gaza and its imposed starvation on Palestinians, the Media Office called on the international community to “play a practical role” in stopping the occupying regime’s crimes in the besieged territory.

“We express our strong condemnation and denunciation of the crime of closing the crossings, the crime of war of starvation, the crime of the unjust siege, the crime of genocide, and ethnic cleansing, which the Israeli occupation army continues to commit with all brutality and vengeance,” the statement said.

“We demand all UN and international organizations to fulfill their roles, and we call on all countries in the world to condemn the genocide practiced by the occupation with all brutality, and we urge them all to move beyond the square of condemnations, denunciations, and silence, and to play a practical role in stopping the policy of starvation, immediately opening the crossings, and stopping the ongoing massacres against civilians, children, and women.”

Over the past months, the United States, Jordan, Egypt and France have conducted airdrop operations into Gaza, which has been under a complete Israeli siege as well as incessant bombardment since October 2023, with critics saying airdropping is an unsafe and insufficient means of aid delivery.

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has on several occasions stated that airdropping of humanitarian aid into Gaza is “useless” as the aids are not sufficient to even meet one percent of the demand.

Hamas says people in Gaza would have had access to thousands of tons of aid if the US had done enough to pressure Israel to open border crossings into the besieged territory.

Israel ignited its bloody war machine in Gaza on October 7 after Hamas-led resistance groups carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Since then, the regime has killed more than 32,300 Palestinians and injured over 74,000 others.

Dog 'Chased, Kicked, Punched' During IPL Game, Incident Draws Criticism

Animal rights activists condemned the “kicking and punching” of a dog who inadvertently entered a cricket stadium during an IPL match. A purported video of the incident that happened on Sunday in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium during a match between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians surfaced online. The video shows a dog being chased by several people, including the security personnel deployed, as the dog attempts to swerve to avoid them.

The incident drew a sharp reaction from animal rights activists.

PETA India, in a statement, said it strongly condemns the “reprehensible and 100 per cent unsportsmanlike act of chasing, kicking, and punching a lost and confused dog who inadvertently entered the stadium, likely afraid”.

“The dog might have felt compelled to react in self-defence due to the repeated kicking by every individual [it] encountered, including a police officer, and being punched and knocked down by a man, as depicted in the video.

The animal rights group said such treatment not only inflicts cruelty upon the innocent dog but also heightens the risk of a tragic incident.

Those involved should suffer penalties, if not arrest, it said.

It also demanded that stadium authorities must immediately adopt humane methods of dealing with such situations.

“Furthermore, we call upon both the stadium and police authorities to take cognisance of this video, ensuring that such deplorable actions by members of the public, stadium staff, and law enforcement officials are prevented from occurring in the future,” it said.

Keren Nazareth, senior director, Companion Animal and Engagement, Humane Society International/India said this was not the first time a dog entered a cricket or football stadium.

“The dog was clearly scared and in a crowd with so many adults, not one was able to calmly deal with the situation. There should be some training for the field staff on how to be able to humanely remove dogs from such a situation so as not to harm the dog or anyone else,” she said.

“We could definitely learn from some football matches where dogs have had a field day! The fact that we have lived by them for thousands of years, it is only fair that we start being more serious about understanding their behaviour and compassionately finding solutions,” she added.

Crackdown on unapproved mango ripening methods in Hyderabad markets

Authorities launched crackdown against fruit traders

Crackdown on unapproved mango ripening methods in Hyderabad markets

Hyderabad: The authorities have launched a crackdown in the city against fruit traders using unpermitted methods for ripening of mangoes. In the last one week, cases were booked against seven traders in the city for utilising artificial ripening agents.

In the last few days, the Police officials in collaboration with GHMC have conducted joint raids in city markets and seized mangoes, carbide, and ethephon chemicals. The traders were adopting unscientific methods to ripen the mangoes at the storage units and such practices posed a great risk to human health.

Ethephon, which is a registered insecticide, releases ethylene gas that helps in the ripening of the fruits. “Usage of carbide stone for ripening of mangoes is totally banned. Ethephon is allowed in permissible limits and should be used in accordance with the laid down procedures to ensure the safety of the consumers,” said a Food Safety Officer of the GHMC.

The Ethephon chemical is packed in small sachets weighing five grams each. However, only a few companies fulfil the requirements to ensure the health and well-being of consumers.

Lately, the ‘China brand’, imported from other States, has flooded the market and the authorities are totally against its use.

“The China brand of the ethephon powder violates the guidelines of Food Safety Standards. So we are initiating action against those using it.

There are other local ethephon powders that are sold in market and the traders are allowed to use them,” informed the official. An official of Horticulture Department said awareness program were conducted across the State for farmers on the use of ethephon for ripening of fruits. “Ripening fruits using ethylene gas chambers and powder is permitted. It takes about 3-4 days if one adopts the artificial ripening methods, as compared to 7 -8 days through natural methods,” said the official.

The traders have to see that the fruit does not come in contact with the chemical during the ripening process.

Officials said to reduce ripening time the fruit traders were directly keeping the China made ethylene powder sachets in the fruits and such practice poses health risk to the consumers. “The sachet should be dipped in a water bucket and later kept some distance away from the fruit consignment,” officials explain.

UNSC resolution shows ‘unprecedented isolation’ of Israel

Speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Tehran on Tuesday, Haniyeh said the resolution indicates that “the Israeli occupation is experiencing unprecedented political isolation.”

The Hamas chief added that the resolution, passed on Monday, also showed that the United States is no longer able to impose its will on the international community.

The US, the Israeli regime’s main political and military supporter, did not use its veto power and abstained from voting, allowing the resolution to be adopted.

Although it was delayed and has some shortcomings, the Security Council resolution is a sign of the unique resistance of the Palestinian people, Haniyeh said.

Despite incurring heavy costs in the war on Gaza, the Zionist regime has failed to achieve its military goals and is instead losing political and international support, he noted.

He also expressed hope that Muslims worldwide would have a stronger presence at this year’s Quds Day rallies, held each year on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.
