Chief Secretary says sufficient water available in three main reservoirs

Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumari

Hyderabad: Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumari on Tuesday reiterated that there was no problem for drinking water in the current summer as there was sufficient water available in the three main reservoirs of the State.

Speaking at a video conference with district Collectors and senior officials over drinking water supply, the Chief Secretary said some States were facing severe drinking water shortage, and that attempts were being made to project a similar situation in Telangana as well.

“Despite the lack of sufficient rainfall in the State, there is no need to worry as the water levels in the main reservoirs, including SRSP, Sripada Yellampalli and Nagarjunasagar are same as last year,” Santhi Kumari said, and at the same, asked Collectors to make alternative arrangements. In some municipalities and villages there were administrative deficiencies and they were resolved immediately. Collectors should respond to news items on water issues being published in different media and take action immediately, she said.

The Chief Secretary said after the second week of April, emergency pumping from the reservoirs would be undertaken. Water Board officials said there was sufficient supply of water in Hyderabad but the demand due to commercial needs was high.

A Summer Action Plan was already formulated to address the problem of drinking water. Appropriate funds were released to districts as such there was no need to worry about drinking water supply, the Chief Secretary said, also asking Collectors to address management errors immediately and pay special attention to ensure continuous water supply.

UN agency says Israel must allow food deliveries to northern Gaza

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has called on Israel to revoke a ban on food deliveries to the northern Gaza Strip from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Jens Laerke, the OCHA spokesman, made the appeal at a UN briefing in the Swiss city of Geneva on Tuesday, a day after UNRWA said Israel will no longer approve its food convoys to north Gaza.

Laerke said people in Gaza are facing a “cruel death by famine.”

“The decision must be revoked.”

“You cannot claim to adhere to these international provisions of law when you block UNRWA food convoys.”

On Monday, Israel said it would stop working with UNRWA in Gaza, accusing the UN agency of involvement in the conflict.

UNRWA, which provides healthcare, education, and other vital services to the Palestinian people, was accused by Israel in January of having links to the October 7 operation conducted by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas against the occupying entity in response to the intensification of Tel Aviv’s decades-long crimes against the Palestinians.

The allegations prompted more than 10 donor countries, including the United States, Germany, Canada, and Japan, as well as the European Union to suspend financial support. The funding used to make up the bulk of all the money the agency received.

The collective move against UNRWA came amid mass displacement and an all-out famine across Gaza prompted by Israel’s campaign of death and destruction in the blockaded territory in response to the October operation.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said he has seen “paper thin” children in a hospital in northern Gaza.

James Elder made the remarks during the same UN briefing on Tuesday, while describing his latest visit to northern Gaza.

“Tens of thousands of people crowd the streets,” he said. “They make that universal signal of hand to mouth desperately asking and seeking for food.”

“Life-saving aid is being obstructed. Lives are being lost.”

“I saw children whose malnutrition state was so severe, skeletal.”

Israel has killed at least 32,300 Palestinians in Gaza since early October.

The regime has also cut off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

New Delhi :

Sri Lanka’s star spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, is likely to be unavailable for another week for Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad as he looks to consult doctors overseas about chronic pain in his left heel, according to ESPNcricinfo. Hasaranga recently featured in Sri Lanka’s white-ball series against Bangladesh but according to ESPNcricinfo, he did it while going through a substantial amount of pain. During the six matches that he played in the limited-overs format, Hasaranga claimed eight wickets, with six coming in the ODI series and two in the T20I. ESPNcricinfo revealed that Hasaranga was assessed by Sri Lanka Cricket’s medical staff and they suspect that the pain is down to the musculo-skeletal apparatus in his left heel having become worn.

ESPNcricinfo further reported that the SLC’s doctors have advised Hasaranga to get a medical opinion to understand the nature of the injury and how to manage it.

Hasaranga is yet to join SRH camp and there is no set date on his arrival. His recent setback could hinder his chances of featuring in the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be played in June.

The 26-year-old was the star performer for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru last season, as he ended the campaign with 26 wickets at an economy rate of 7.54.

Recently, he was suspended for two Bangladesh Tests after being sanctioned three demerit points for showing dissent at the umpire’s decision during the third ODI against Bangladesh.

The incident occurred in the 37th over of the game, when Hasaranga grabbed his cap from one of the umpires and ridiculed the umpiring in the play. Bangladesh won the series 2-1 with four-wicket.

He received a 50 per cent fine and three penalty points for his offence. This increased his total demerit points to eight in a 24-month span.

The all-rounder was already on five demerit points after receiving three during the third T20I against Afghanistan in Dambulla last month. Following this, he was suspended for two Twenty20 Internationals against Bangladesh. With the addition of the most recent demerit points, he has now exceeded the eight-point barrier, which has been translated into four suspension points under article 7.6 of the Code.

"The Anatomy Of A Genocide": UN Expert Calls For Arms Embargo On Israel

'The Anatomy Of A Genocide': UN Expert Calls For Arms Embargo On Israel

Israel’s diplomatic mission in Geneva said the use of the word genocide was “outrageous” (File)

A United Nations expert told the global body’s Human Rights Council on Tuesday that she believed that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza since Oct. 7 amounted to genocide and called on countries to immediately impose sanctions and an arms embargo.

Israel, which did not attend the session, rejected her findings.

“It is my solemn duty to report on the worst of what humanity is capable of and to present my findings,” Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Territories, told the UN rights body in Geneva, presenting a report called “The Anatomy of a Genocide”.

“I find that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the threshold indicating the commission of the crime of genocide against Palestinians as a group in Gaza has been met,” she said, citing more than 30,000 Palestinians killed among other acts.

“I implore member states to abide by their obligations, which start with imposing an arms embargo and sanctions on Israel and so ensure that the future does not continue to repeat itself,” she said, prompting a burst of applause.

The 1948 Genocide Convention, enacted in the wake of the mass murder of Jews in the Nazi Holocaust, defines genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”.

Israel’s diplomatic mission in Geneva said the use of the word genocide was “outrageous” and said the war was against Islamist group Hamas and not Palestinian civilians. It was triggered when Hamas fighters entered southern Israel, killing 1,200 and taking 253 hostages, by Israeli tallies.

“Instead of seeking the truth, this Special Rapporteur tries to fit weak arguments to her distorted and obscene inversion of reality,” it said.

Gulf nations such as Qatar, as well as African countries including Algeria and Mauritania, voiced support for Albanese’s findings and alarm at the humanitarian situation.

The seats for Israel’s ally the United States were left empty. Washington has previously accused the council of a chronic anti-Israel bias.

Albanese, an Italian lawyer, is one of dozens of independent human rights experts mandated by the United Nations to report and advise on specific themes and crises. Her views do not reflect those of the global body as a whole.

In the past, her comments on the Israel-Hamas conflict have drawn scrutiny, including from a US ambassador in Geneva who said she has a history of using “antisemitic tropes”UN.

India now home to over 150 two-wheeler EV startups

New Delhi: Driven by conducive government policies and incentives towards a green future, India now has more than 150 two-wheeler electric vehicle (EV) startups, a new report said on Wednesday.

According to an analysis by global investment advisory firm Bernstein, the Indian EV segment is expected to grow 15-20 times to reach annual sales of 15-20 million units over the next decade.

“Around 85 per cent of the 65 models launched last year were such products — high-speed as against speed and range-constrained products, which used to be a feature of the startups,” according to the Bernstein report.

“The average battery capacity for new launches increased from 2.3 kWh (kilowatt-hour) in 2022 to 3 kWh,” the analysis noted.

TechCrunch was first to report on the Bernstein analysis. The new EV manufacturing policy, announced by the Central government last week, aims to not only attract global players to India but also stress on domestic value addition.

The new policy sets the stage for a vibrant future-mobility global manufacturing hub in the country.

The policy fixes a minimum investment of Rs 4,150 crore for foreign companies who want to set up EV manufacturing facilities in the country.

The Indian EV market is experiencing notable expansion, with a particular focus on meeting the surging demand for cleaner transportation, which is also necessitating a parallel expansion of charging infrastructure to cater to escalating demand.

The country may see 1 crore EV sales annually by 2030, generating nearly 5 crore jobs, according to Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways.

Iran will never hesitate to support Gaza, Palestine: Leader

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says Iran has a fixed policy of providing support to Palestine and the people in Gaza who have been suffering from brutal Israeli aggression for nearly six months.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday with a Palestinian resistance movement Hamas delegation led by the group’s politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran would never hesitate to support the Palestinian cause and the oppressed and resilient people of Gaza,” he said.

The Leader praised the people of Gaza for the “historic patience” they have shown in the face of Israeli aggression, saying the patience has become a source of dignity and pride for Islam and the Muslims.

“The huge phenomenon of the patience of people in Gaza has turned the issue of Palestine into the world’s dominant issue despite the will of the enemy,” he said.

Ayatollah Khamenei also paid tribute to Saleh al-Arouri, a member of the Hamas political bureau, who was assassinated in the Lebanese capital Beirut in January in a drone attack attributed to the Israeli regime.

In the meeting, Haniyeh thanked the Iranian government and the nation for the support they have provided to the Palestinian cause and the people in Gaza during the ongoing war.

He also briefed Ayatollah Khamenei about the latest political developments surrounding the war in Gaza and the situation on the ground.

He said the regime of Israel has failed to reach any of the objectives it declared at the beginning of the war in October because of “the exemplary patience and steadfastness” shown by the Palestinian people and resistance groups in Gaza.

Haniyeh arrived in Tehran earlier on Tuesday hours after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire between the group and Israel in Gaza.

The senior Palestinian resistance leader said after a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian that the UNSC resolution was a sign of “unprecedented isolation” for the Israeli regime.
