Hamas Urges End To Gaza Airdrops After Deaths, Asks For More Aid Trucks

Hamas Urges End To Gaza Airdrops After Deaths, Asks For More Aid Trucks

Jordanian, US and other planes have airdropped food into Gaza

Hamas on Tuesday urged foreign nations to stop parachuting aid into war-torn Gaza after officials and humanitarians said 18 people died trying to reach food packages in the starving north.

Instead, the Palestinian Hamas group that rules the Gaza Strip demanded that its enemy Israel allow more aid trucks to enter the besieged territory, which the United Nations has warned is on the brink of a “man-made famine”.

Fighting raged on unabated a day after the UN Security Council passed its first resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in the bloodiest ever Gaza war, sparked by Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel.

The resolution also demands that Hamas operatives free the roughly 130 hostages Israel says remain in Gaza, including 33 captives who are presumed dead.

Jordanian, US and other planes have airdropped food into Gaza, even as UN officials and aid agencies have warned this falls far short of the dire needs of its 2.4 million people and is far less effective than ensuring overland access.

On Tuesday, as Jordanian, Egyptian, Emirati and German planes again airdropped relief goods, with the sight of food packages floating down on parachutes sending Palestinian crowds rushing toward them.

Six people were killed in stampedes and 12 others drowned off the territory’s Mediterranean coast, the Hamas government and the Swiss-based Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said.

Hamas in a statement called for “an immediate end to airdrop operations” and “the immediate and rapid opening of land crossings to allow humanitarian aid to reach our Palestinian people”.

The UN children’s fund, UNICEF, said vastly more aid must be rushed into Gaza by road, rather than air or sea, to avert “this imminent famine”.

Food aid is usually only airdropped in crises where “people are cut off for hundreds of kilometres”, said UNICEF spokesman James Elder, speaking via video link from Gaza.

But “the lifesaving aid they need is a matter of kilometres away”, he said, as trucks loaded with aid have been waiting across Gaza’s southern border with Egypt.

“We need to use the road networks.”

UN ceasefire vote

Israeli troops meanwhile battled Hamas with no sign of a let-up in the war raging for almost six months.

The Israeli military said its jets had struck more than 60 targets, including tunnels and buildings “in which armed terrorists were identified”.

The health ministry in the Hamas-run territory said 70 people were killed early Tuesday, 13 of them in air strikes around the southern city of Rafah.

The Security Council resolution passed Monday demanded a ceasefire for the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan that should lead to a “lasting” truce.

Israel’s top ally the United States, which had blocked previous resolutions, abstained amid growing concern for the worsening humanitarian situation, sparking an angry reaction from Israel.

Washington has baulked at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s determination to launch an assault on Rafah.

The far southern city is Gaza’s last major population centre still untouched by Israeli ground troops, and where most of Gaza’s population has sought refuge.

Israel charged that the UN resolution “hurts” both its war effort and attempts to free hostages, though the White House insisted there had been no shift in its policy.

Palestinians in Rafah welcomed the UN vote and called on Washington to ensure the resolution is implemented.

Bilal Awad, 63, said the United States must “stand against an attack on Rafah, and support the return of the displaced to their cities” further north in Gaza.

‘Political isolation’

The October 7 attack resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign against Hamas has killed at least 32,414 people in Gaza, most of them women and children, according to the health ministry.

Hamas welcomed the UN resolution and reaffirmed its readiness to negotiate the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, during a visit to Iran on Tuesday, said Israel is experiencing “unprecedented political isolation” and losing US “protection” at the Security Council.

In an earlier statement, Hamas had blamed Israel for the failure to make progress in the latest round of talks hosted by mediator Qatar.

Hamas argued Netanyahu and his cabinet were “entirely responsible for the failure of negotiation efforts and for preventing an agreement from being reached up until now”.

Netanyahu’s office hit back on social media platform X, charging that Hamas was “not interested in continuing negotiations”.

Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said on Tuesday the talks were “ongoing”, adding there had been no “development that would lead to thinking that one of the teams has pulled out of the negotiations”.

Battles near hospitals

On the ground in Gaza, dozens of Israeli tanks and armoured vehicles surrounded the Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Yunis, where thousands of displaced people have sought refuge, witnesses said.

The health ministry said shots were being fired around the sprawling complex, but no raid had yet taken place.

At Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital, the territory’s largest, Israeli troops have been engaged in heavy fighting for nine days. Israel claims to have killed 170 Palestinian operatives and arrested hundreds.

On Monday, the Israeli military reported killing about 20 fighters around Al-Amal Hospital, also in Khan Yunis, over the previous day in close-quarters combat and air strikes.

Israel has labelled its operations “precise operational activities” and said it has taken care to avoid harm to civilians, but aid agencies have voiced concern for non-combatants caught up in the fighting.

Palestinians living near Al-Shifa have reported corpses in the streets, constant bombardment and the rounding up of men who are stripped to their underwear and questioned.

Chandigarh:

Haryana minister Ranjit Singh Chautala, who has been named by the BJP as its candidate from Hisar Lok Sabha seat after he joined the party, has resigned from the membership of the state assembly, officials said on Tuesday.

The independent MLA from Rania seat in Sirsa district has sent his resignation to Haryana Assembly Speaker, they said.

Ranjit Chautala and industrialist and former Congress MP Naveen Jindal joined the BJP on Sunday and were named as the party’s candidates from Hisar and Kurukshetra Lok Sabha seats, respectively.

Recently, former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar had also resigned as an MLA from Karnal. Mr Khattar is contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Karnal.

As an independent MLA, Ranjit Chautala had extended support to the BJP when it fell short of majority on its own after the 2019 assembly polls. He was later made power and jails minister.

Earlier this month, in a surprise move, the BJP replaced Khattar with OBC leader Nayab Singh Saini as Haryana chief minister in a swift switch in the state, just weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Ranjit Chautala again became the power minister in the Saini-led BJP government.

"Should Take Words Back": BJP MP Hema Malini On Congress Leader's Actor Remark

'Should Take Words Back': BJP MP Hema Malini On Congress Leader's Actor Remark

“But the kind of comments Supriya ji made against her is not nice,” Hema Malini said (File)

Mathura:

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate must take back her remarks against Kangana Ranaut, BJP MP and fellow actor Hema Malini said on Tuesday, joining the growing debate over the opposition leader’s comments on Mandi from where the “Queen” star is contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

Describing Ms Ranaut as a bold and outspoken woman, the two-time Mathura MP said she is “perfect for politics”.

“Making such comments against a woman when you yourself are one is wrong,” Hema Malini told news agency PTI in an exclusive interview here.

Following the massive row over derogatory comments on Ms Ranaut and Mandi posted on Shrinate’s social media accounts, she came out in strong support of the actor.

“Just because she comes from a film background… She is an artiste and she has proved herself as a fine actor, she has got so many awards. She is very bold, outspoken. She takes part in everything. She is perfect for politics,” she said.

Hema Malini also congratulated the four-time National Award winning actor, who is set to make her political debut from her birthplace Mandi.

“She is a fighter, she will definitely fight back,” said the 75-year-old.

“But the kind of comments Supriya ji made against her is not nice. She should have some dignity. She should take back her words,” she added.

The Congress kicked up a proverbial storm after derogatory comments on Ranaut and Mandi were posted on the social media handles of its leaders Shrinate and H S Ahir.

In her defence, Ms Shrinate on Monday said that many people have access to her Facebook and Instagram accounts and one of them made the inappropriate post. She also said she had deleted the post and will take action against a parody account that is using her name.

Asked whether film personalities taking the political plunge are soft targets, Hema Malini said that may be the case but Ms Ranaut was “so solid”.

The actor-politician, who is seeking a third term from Mathura in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, said Ms Ranaut will do a good job as a potential leader from Mandi.

“She has that capability and she has an interest in politics. As artistes, our vision for a place tends to be much better than a lot of people,” she said.

All-Indian Crew's SOS Saved Lives In US Bridge Collapse, Says Governor

'Heroes': All-Indian Crew's SOS Saved Lives In US Bridge Collapse, Says Governor

The Maryland governor said the Mayday call allowed some road traffic to be stopped.

The container ship that rammed a bridge in US’ Baltimore, causing it to collapse almost entirely and sending cars and people plunging into the river below, was manned entirely by a crew of Indians. This was confirmed by shipping company Maersk, which had chartered the Singapore-flagged container ship, named Dali.

According to a report by news agency AFP, several vehicles and nearly 20 people are believed to have fallen into the Patapsco River after the 300-metre-long vessel crashed into one of the legs of the bridge. The ship had a crew of 22 members, all of whom were Indian. Quoting the Synergy Marine Group, which manages the Dali, a report said all crew members had been accounted for and none of them were injured.

Footage showed lights going out on the ship just before it rammed a leg of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a portion of which collapsed on the vessel itself.

Maryland’s governor said the ship, which was moving at a “rapid” eight knots (nine miles per hour), issued a Mayday call moments before it collided with the pillar of the bridge and this helped saved lives as some road traffic could be stopped.

“These people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” Governor Wes Moore was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.

The Dali struck a pylon of the bridge at approximately 1:30 am local time (11 am IST) on Tuesday. Vehicles could be seen on the road surface as the bridge warped and crashed in sections, with the third tranche cantilevering upwards before it, too, tumbled into the water.

Rescuers said they were still looking for at least seven people, having pulled two people free.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said maintenance workers were on the bridge at the time of the collision, an incident he described as an “unthinkable tragedy… like something out of an action movie.”

“We have to be thinking about the families and people impacted, folks who we have to try to find,” he said.

In a statement, Maersk said, “We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected… We can confirm that the container vessel ‘DALI’, operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group, is time chartered by Maersk and is carrying Maersk customers’ cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard the vessel.”

“We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed,” it added.
