Gaza Civilian Casualties 'Too High': Pentagon Chief To Israel Counterpart

The United States has backed Israel with both military and diplomatic support

Washington:

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant Tuesday that civilian casualties in Gaza are “too high,” and said the two would talk about alternatives to a major Israeli operation in the territory’s south.

A separate Israeli delegation was supposed to visit Washington to discuss US concerns over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans to launch an assault on the southern city of Rafah, where much of Gaza’s population has sought refuge.

But Israel scrapped that visit after the United States abstained in a Monday vote on a UN Security Council resolution that called for a Gaza ceasefire, allowing it to pass.

“In Gaza today, the number of civilian casualties is far too high, and the amount of humanitarian aid is far too low,” Mr Austin said at the beginning of the meeting, adding that it would include discussion of alternatives for targeting Hamas in Rafah.

Gallant meanwhile said they would talk about “developments in Gaza and the means to achieve our goals: the destruction of Hamas organization and bringing back the Israeli hostages.”

Roughly 130 people are still believed to be held in Gaza after they were seized in the shock Hamas attack on October 7 that resulted in the deaths of about 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli figures.

Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 32,414 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

The United States has backed Israel with both military and diplomatic support, but has voiced frustration with Netanyahu as the civilian death count in the Gaza Strip mounts and the humanitarian situation worsens.

The accused were identified as Dilli Ram (31), Prakash Poudyel (30), Arjun (27), all residents of Manipur, and Sanjay Kumar Saha (53), a resident of West Bengal.

The officials said that the seized contraband of drugs was bought from Manipur.

Poudyel, Ram and Arjun indulged in illegal drug trafficking for the last three years, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Amit Kaushik said a team was working on information that an interstate narcotic drug cartel is active in the states of Manipur, Assam and West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Delhi.

On March 21, tip-off was received that members of a gang had collected a big consignment of heroin from Manipur, Kaushik said.

“Accordingly, a trap was laid and Poudyel, Ram and Arjun were arrested,” the DCP said.

A total of 15 kg heroin was recovered from their possession,” Mr Kaushik said and added that on their instance Saha was also arrested from West Bengal.

On interrogation, all the accused disclosed that they are members of a drug syndicate involved in trafficking drugs from cross-border Myanmar side to different parts of India, the DCP said.

“Further interrogation of arrested drug suppliers is in progress to identify their remaining associates and members of the syndicate,” he added.

GHMC seizes properties over unpaid taxes

Hyderabad: With multiple commercial property owners continuing to ignore payment of pending property tax dues that have accrued over the years, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started seizing their properties.

According to reports, commercial properties in the western part of the city in areas like Jubilee Hills, Yousufguda, and Kukatpally were seized along with movable properties on the premises. Notices are also being sent to residential buildings.

Currently, the corporation is running a one-time scheme exempting 90 per cent of interest on property tax arrears provided one clears the principle amount of tax until the financial year 2022-23 with 10 per cent interest.

Starting on February 29, the scheme will be open till March 31, the last day of the current financial year. However, the scheme seems to be doing little in fulfilling the target, unlike the Early Bird Scheme in April which generated Rs. 765 crore.

In the last few months, authorities have pulled all the stops to meet the target of Rs. 2,100 this year with one-time schemes, circle-level plans, and clearing any pending court cases. The revised budget estimate for the 2023-24 property tax is Rs. 1810 crore.

Tax Collectors made visits to all commercial and residential properties and notices were served to the defaulters, yet the corporation is falling short of over Rs. 500 crore. Officials say that the election code hindered their operations.

Ship That Hit US Baltimore Bridge Also Involved In 2016 Belgium Accident

The 948-foot MS Dali on Tuesday collided with one of the pillars of the Baltimore bridge.

The ship that caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early on Tuesday was also involved in an accident in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016.

The Antwerp port authorities said the container ship Dali hit a quay on July 11, 2016, as it tried to exit the North Sea container terminal.

The port authority could give no details about the cause of the accident, but said the ship had remained at the dock for repairs for some time after the incident.

“As a general rule, these accidents are investigated and ships are only allowed to leave after experts have determined it is safe for them to do so,” a spokesperson for the Antwerp port told Reuters.

The Belgian nautical committee, which investigates such incidents, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 948-foot MS Dali, owned by Grace Ocean Pte Ltd and managed by Synergy Marine Corp, on Tuesday collided with one of the pillars of the Baltimore bridge.

It was chartered by shipping company Maersk at the time of the incident in Baltimore, the Danish company said in a statement.

Maersk said it could not comment on the incident in Antwerp.

Group of oncologists launch free-of-cost second opinion helpline number for cancer patients

Group of oncologists launch free-of-cost second opinion helpline number for cancer patients

New Delhi: A free-of-cost second opinion helpline number for cancer patients has been launched by a group of oncologists under their “Cancer Mukt Bharat Campaign”.

The number — 9355520202 — will be operational from 10 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday.

Cancer patients can call on this number to speak to oncologists directly or even do a video call to discuss about their treatment.

It can be accessed by anyone in the country and promises to be a game-changer in the fight against cancer, Dr. Ashish Gupta, who is heading the campaign, said.

“Second opinion is recommended to almost all patients who have been diagnosed with cancer as it is a matter of life and death. It is also important if their condition does not improve despite treatment or if their diagnosis or treatment is in doubt. For cancer treatment, costs may be high and differ from hospital to hospital, so cost is another important reason to get a second opinion,” Gupta said.

The helpline will serve as a valuable resource for individuals faced with the daunting challenge of cancer, offering them the opportunity to consult experienced oncologists without the burden of financial constraints, he said.

The free second opinion helpline will help in ensuring that patients receive the most accurate and up-to-date information about their condition and treatment options, Gupta said.

Sharing the reason behind starting this helpline number, he said there is been a rapid increase in the number of cancer cases in India and there is a dearth of healthcare facilities and healthcare doctors.

In the rapidly evolving field of cancer treatment, where new medicines and innovative therapies are continually emerging, a second opinion becomes invaluable, Gupta said.

“With continuous research, we are witnessing advancements in cancer care that were unimaginable just a few years ago. These breakthroughs translate into better outcomes and improved quality of life for cancer patients. The second opinion helpline ensures that patients can tap into these advancements and receive update on the most effective treatments available,” he said.
