INDIA Bloc's "5 Demands" To Election Commission At Mega Rally In Delhi

INDIA Bloc's '5 Demands' To Election Commission At Mega Rally In Delhi

New Delhi:

The INDIA bloc’s rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan this afternoon, was a massive show of strength where the leaders of all major Opposition parties pressed for the release of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand’s former Chief Minister Hemant Soren.  The leaders flagged concerns about the health of the country’s democracy, accusing the BJP of decimating the Opposition through the Central investigative agencies. The BJP hit back, declaring that the rally was not about saving democracy as projected but a “save family” and “hide corruption” rally.

Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra listed five demands of the Opposition to the Election Commission that included the provision of a level playing field before the elections.

Efforts to forcefully scuttle the finances of Opposition parties should be immediately stopped, Ms Gandhi Vadra said, without mentioning the freeze on Congress funds and the latest Income Tax notice. Action by the Enforcement Directorate, CBI and the Income Tax department should also be stopped, she said, reading out the list of demands.

The alliance also demanded a Supreme Court-monitored Special Investigation Team investigate what they called the BJP’s “extortion” of funds through the electoral bonds scheme.

The “Loktantra Bachao Rally”, the leaders said, is a mark of the INDIA bloc’s commitment to fighting, winning, and saving democracy in India.

“If the BJP wins these fixed elections and changes the Constitution, the country will be on fire,” declared Congress’s Rahul Gandhi. “You have to decide if you want democracy or dictatorship… Those who support dictatorship need to be kicked out of the country,” added party ch9ief Mallikarjun Kharge.

“A new energy in the politics of India has been born today… Today, the slogan for independence is being raised here… It is our independence that our Constitution and our republic are protected. We will gain this independence,” said CPM’s Sitaram Yechury.

Punjab Chief Minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Bhagwant Mann declared that Arvind Kejriwal was not a man but an ideology.

“You can arrest Arvind Kejriwal, but how will you arrest his ideology? In which jail will you send the lakhs of Kejriwals that are born in India?” he said, reiterating the party stance on the arrest of the Chief Minister, which took place on the eve of the general elections in the country. Mr Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal and Hemant Soren’s wife Kalpana Soren were also present at today’s rally.

The arrest has brought together the Opposition bloc, which was making more headlines recently over its differences than its unity.

A case in point was Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s decision to go it alone in Bengal instead of the agreed-upon sit-sharing formula. She even said that her membership of INDIA bloc was on hold and she would review the matter after the election.

Her party MP Derek O’Brien, however, staunchly declared today that Trinamool “very much was, is and will be part of the INDIA alliance”. “This is a fight of BJP versus democracy,” he added.

The rally also comes on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the BJP campaign in Uttar Pradesh. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, though, appeared unfazed.

Appearing at the rally, Mr Yadav said, “These people are giving the slogan of ‘400 Paar’. If you are going to win more than 400 seats, then why are you scared of the AAP leader”.

“You have sent elected Chief Ministers to jail. Not just the Indians but the whole world is criticising it,’ he said, without explicitly mentioning the comments that have come on the subject from the United Nations, United States and Germany.

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi told reporters that the Opposition rally was meant to hide their acts of corruption.

“The Congress is supporting those who have looted the country as Congress has also looted throughout their tenure. From the days of Pandit Nehru, the Jeep scam to the Bofors scam; the coal scam to the commonwealth scam and the 2G scam. All these happened while Congress was in power,” said Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.

“In Ramlila Maidan, those who put dots in between the name of this country and speak about saving the nation. They are actually there to save their family… India’s ‘tukde tukde’ is in the DNA of Congress… Yuvraj is not even ready to accept India as a nation and he also demands interference of foreign soil,” said the BJP’s Shehzad Poonawala.

IPL: Mohit, Noor and Rashid restrict SRH to 162/8

IPL: Mohit, Noor and Rashid restrict SRH to 162/8

Ahmedabad: Veteran seamer Mohit Sharma straight-jacketed the batters in death overs after Afghan spin twins Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad had tightened the noose in the middle overs as Gujarat Titans restricted the high-flying Sunrisers Hyderabad to a modest 162 for 8 in their IPL match here Sunday.

Fresh from smashing a record 277 in their last game, SRH were going great guns with 56/1 inside the power-play but the young and experienced Afghan wrist spin duo of Noor (1/32) and Rashid (1/33) turned the match on its head.

Noor dismissed the in-form SRH opener Travis Head (19), while Rashid sent back explosive Heinrich Klaasen (24) against the run of play.

Rashid also took a brilliant diving catch at the deep to dismiss Aiden Markram as SRH faltered badly at the back end. They managed just 40 runs and lost five wickets in the last five overs.

Mohit then shone at the death, dismissing Shahbaz Ahmed (22) and Washington Sundar (0) off successive balls. He returned impressive figures of 4-0-25-3 as SRH managed just three runs in the last over.

After plundering runs at an astonishing pace in their last game, the Orange Army had little hesitation in opting to bat first and dictate the pace of the game with Travis Head up front.

The Aussie left-hander kept charging in, while Mayank Agarwal (16) once again looked out of sorts before being dismissed by Azmatullah Omarzai.

Last match hero Abhishek Sharma smashed Rashid for two sixes on both the sides and it revived memories of his last match partnership with Head.

But left-arm wrist spinner Noor bowled a superb first over to peg SRH back from being 56/1 after the power-play.

The in-form destrcutive SRH opener Head unleashed a slog sweep as the 19-year-old Afghan spinner tricked him with a wrong one. The ball pitched on his off-stump before sharply turning in to crash into the middle-stump.

Runs suddenly dried up with Rashid conceding just four runs from his second over as both the wrist spinners bowled superbly in tandem to squeeze SRH in.

A captaincy masterstroke by Shubman Gill to bowl Mohit the 10th over resulted in another wicket when the veteran seamer dismissed a well-set Abhishek (29).

The left-hander sliced it straight to Gill at extra-cover in what seemed a perfect set-up for the young Indian batter.

But Klaasen ensured that the lull does not stay longer as he charged the young Noor in his last over for two slog sweeps over midwicket boundary.

Rashid however had the last laugh as he cut short the innings of SRH six-hitting machine Klaasen in the 14th over.

The South African completely missed Rashid’s googly to be cleaned up against the run of play.

In the next over, Rashid made all the difference with his splendid diving catch at deep to dismiss Aiden Markram (17).

Markram took charge of a Yadav slower delivery as Rashid at long on ran forward, adjusted at the last moment to take a stunning diving catch tumbling forward.

Area under Jowar cultivation increases in Sangareddy

Area under Jowar cultivation increases in Sangareddy

Sangareddy: The increased consumption of millets among the people is boosting jowar cultivation in Sangareddy district. The same is visible as the area under jowar cultivation has increased to 57,000 acres from last year’s 29,000 acres during the Yasangi season.

The farmers cultivate jowar predominantly during Yasangi in the district as a second crop. The farmers of Narayankhed and Zaheerabad assembly constituencies cultivate jowar in vast areas compared to other parts of the district. The farmers who cultivate green gram, black gram, Kusuma and other crops during Vanakalam take up jowar as Yasangi crop. While farmers, who did not have irrigation facilities, take up jowar cultivation in September and October, farmers who have irrigation facilities take up jowar cultivation in January. However, jowar cultivated in September and October will be in more demand because they will be grown depending on rain and moisture during the winter.

Since the State government had procured jowar last season by offering Rs.2,200 per quintal as MSP by opening several procurement centres, the farmers were finding it easy to market their produce. However, farmers were getting Rs 4,000 to Rs.5,000 per quintal in the open market for jowar cultivated in September and October which they would call Saye Jonnalu in local parlance.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Agriculture Extension Officer (AEO) Zaheerabad Pradeep Kumar said the roti and malt made with Saye Jonnalu were considered healthy food since ancient days. Urban people also showed an increased interest in the consumption of jowar in recent years which made traders make a beeline for jowar from farmers. The irrigated jowar is being bought by fodder companies for Rs 2,200 per quintal. This year, farmers of Kalher mandal alone cultivated jowar on 8,634 acres while Narayankhed farmers took up cultivation on 7,050 acres.

Watch: Airport Staffer Uses Sponge Board To Prevent Luggage Damage

Watch: Airport Staffer Uses Sponge Board To Prevent Luggage Damage On Conveyor Belt In Varanasi

Passengers at Varanasi Airport witnessed something unusual at the baggage claim

Flying offers undeniable convenience and saves travellers precious time. You ditch the heavy luggage hassle! However, downsides exist. Lost, damaged, or broken suitcases plague frequent flyers. Watching luggage tumble onto conveyor belts raises concerns. To address this, Varanasi Airport has a unique solution that’s gaining internet buzz with mixed reactions.

Passengers at Varanasi Airport witnessed something unusual at the baggage claim. A viral X (formerly Twitter) video shows an airport official stationed precisely where luggage transitions to the moving belt. The man can be seen with a thick sponge sheet to cushion the fall, ensuring a gentler landing for your belongings!

Along with the video, the user wrote, “Great to see the luggage being taken care of at the belt.”

See the video here:

Since being posted, the video has gathered more than 164,000 views on X with various comments.

A user wrote, “This is a pointless job and only for show lol. Baggage handlers on the other side have already done all the damage they can to these bags.”

Another user wrote, “What a waste of personnel…the worst treatment baggage gets is on loading and unloading from the plane … what happens so bad  at the belt.”

“It’s funny that people keep falling for this PR stunt from airports. From when you check in your luggage to when it shows up on the baggage claim, it has to pass through multiple conveyor belts and gets tossed around a lot while being loaded and unloaded from aircraft. Keeping a foam pad at the very end of the process when your luggage has taken 95% of all the possible hits during the journey is nothing short of making a fool out of you,” the third user commented.

“Why don’t they have foam or cushion wrapped over belt. It’s a useless and exhausting process,” the fourth user commented.

The fifth user commented, “Why can’t one assemble the cousin there on the spot, such that there is no human error or dependency? The person can be assigned with other humanoid responsibilities such as assisting, helping serving customers .. etc”

Movie Review: Raveena Tandon’s performance as lawyer Tanvi Shukla impresses everyone in ‘Patna Shukla’

By Nirupama Kodukula

A courtroom-based drama, Patna Shukla has Raveena Tandon coming up with an impressive performance that makes the movie a compelling watch.

Directed by Vivek Budakoti, produced by Arash Khan, and written by Vivek Budakoti, Farid Khan, and Sameer Arora, and with a runtime of two and a half hours, it is a good weekend watch. As it unravels, the movie touches upon varied subjects including examination scams by educational institutions.

With Anushka Kaushik and the late Satish Kaushik in important roles, the movie revolves around Ravenna, who plays Tanvi Shukla, a lawyer in Patna Court, leading a happy life. Initially, she takes up small cases without any hesitation and puts all her efforts into those cases to win, but the movie takes a transition and shifts to a topic that needs a serious discussion – the examination scam.

Although the main lead is Raveena, the movie takes a turn because of Rinki Kumari (Anushka Kaushik), who gives her bachelor’s examination and fails it. Though confident of comfortably passing, her result leaves her shocked.

Due to her poor economic conditions, daughter of a rickshaw puller (Satish Kaushik),

Rinki cannot fight alone. Rinki seeks help and the case is taken up by Tanvi Shukla. The rest of the movie is about whether the student gets justice or not while exposing scams done by educational departments.

This film is not only about a courtroom-based story, but it has much more than that. It dwells into relations presenting Raveena as a wife, mother, and daughter. There are also issues of gender discrimination faced by women. Despite occasional flaws, it goes maintains a steady flow with an engaging narrative, comedy timing, and one-liners.

In Patna Shukla, released on Disney Plus, Raveena plays a different character which is compelling to watch as she gives her best.

Harvard Law School student government urges university to divest from Israel

The Harvard Law School (HLS) Student Government has passed a resolution calling on the university to fully divest from any institution that supports the ongoing Israeli genocide of Palestinians in war-torn Gaza.

The resolution pushes the Harvard Management Company (HMC), which oversees the university’s $50 billion endowment, “to divest completely from weapons manufacturers, firms, academic programs, corporations, and all other institutions that aid the ongoing occupation of Palestine and the genocide of Palestinians.”

In the resolution, the HLS Student Government points to Harvard’s investment of “nearly $200 million in companies tied to the Israeli military and illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine” as well as HMC’s previous divestment from South African apartheid in 1986 and the tobacco industry in 1990.

The resolution’s author, Harvard Law student Swap Agrawal, who also serves as co-president of the law school’s student Government, said members of the body have heard from students who “felt strongly that this call was necessary to put pressure on things to change.”

“Palestinian students at [Harvard Law School] have lost dozens of family members in the ongoing genocide,” Agrawal said in a statement Friday night.

“Students are deeply troubled that money held in trust for their benefit is being used to support the genocide,” he added.

Agrawal revealed the resolution was influenced by the International Court of Justice’s statement in January, which found it “plausible” that Israel has engaged in actions that breach the Genocide Convention.

Two board members stepped down following the resolution vote where 12 members supported, four opposed, and three abstained.

Regina De Nigris and Cameron Adkins wrote in their resignation letter that they stepped down because they “strongly disagree with the resolution being considered by the Student Government.”

They claimed that an anonymity motion passed at a March 26 meeting was in violation of a provision of the Student Government Constitution, stating that “all… votes of the Student Council shall be held in open session and minutes shall be made public.”

In a statement on Friday, Harvard University spokesperson Jason A. Newton made it clear “it opposes calls for a policy of boycotting Israel and its academic institutions,” citing former University President Lawrence S. Bacow’s response to The Crimson Editorial Board’s 2022 endorsement of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement.

Earlier this year, Claudine Gay, former president of Harvard, stepped down after pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus amid Israel’s war on Gaza and plagiarism accusations.

During a testimony, Gay faced criticism for not addressing the issue of the genocide of Jews as a violation of Harvard’s code of conduct.

Some members of Congress also accused Gay of not doing enough to condemn and combat anti-Semitism on Harvard’s campus.

This revelation sparked scrutiny, leading the House committee to initiate an investigation into anti-Semitic incidents at the university.

Sircilla: Case against five men for posing as scribes, extorting money

One of the accused was arrested and produced in the court.

RAJANNA-SIRCILLA: Thangallapalli police registered a case against five pseudo journalists for extorting money from a rice mill owner posing as reporters. One of the accused was arrested and produced in the court.

Sircilla DSP Chandrashekhar Reddy, in a statement released to media on Sunday, informed that Ponnam Chandramouli, Dusa Rajender, Choutapalli Venkatesh, Avunuri Prashanth and Naresh followed a paddy lorry proceeding to Siddipet from Varalaxmi rice mill, Vemulawada on Saturday evening.

When the lorry reached Jillella, they intercepted the vehicle and got the details of the owner through the lorry driver. They contacted the rice mill owner over the phone. Introducing themselves as reporters, they demanded Rs.20,000 saying that he was illegally transporting paddy. They threatened to inform officials if he did not give them the money.

The rice mill owner then paid them but also lodged a complaint with the police, following which IPS officer Rahul Reddy registered a case and began investigation.

Police arrested one accused Chandramouli and recovered Rs.20,000 from him. The remaining four accused were absconding. Chandramouli was produced before court.
