UNRWA has no replacement in Gaza, agency warns amid funding cuts

Palestinian refugees gather outside the offices of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on January 30, 2024 to protest against some countries’ decision to stop funding the organization. (AFP)

The UN aid coordinator for the Gaza Strip says no organization could ever replace the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees due to UNRWA’s “tremendous capacity” in handling the situation in the besieged Palestinian territory.

“There is no way that any organization can replace or substitute (the) tremendous capacity, the fabric of UNRWA — (their) ability and their knowledge of the population in Gaza,” Sigrid Kaag said on Wednesday.

Several Western countries, not least the United States and Britain, have suspended funding UNRWA following unproven allegations by the Israeli regime that some of the agency’s staff were involved in Operation al-Aqsa Storm of October 7, 2023.

Norway, one of the few major donors, has urged fellow donor countries to reflect on the wider consequences of cutting their funding to UNRWA. The people in Gaza are already suffering from lack of food, water and basic supplies.

Also on Wednesday, the United Nations warned of a “humanitarian collapse” in Gaza in the wake of the funding cuts. In a joint statement, the heads of organizations that form the UN Inter-Agency Standing Committee said the halt in funding was perilous.

“Withdrawing funds from UNRWA is perilous and would result in the collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza, with far-reaching humanitarian and human rights consequences in the occupied Palestinian territory and across the region.”

And on Tuesday, the political bureau chief the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, said the funding cuts go against an interim ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on January 26 to increase humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

Britain’s former Ambassador to Uzbekistan Graig Murray recently told Press TV that the defunding is a reaction to the ICJ’s ruling against Israel.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh of the Palestinian Authority has accused Israel of a “premeditated political attack” on UNRWA and called for the restoration of aid funds.

Ken Griffin Stops Donations To Harvard, Calls Students 'Whiny Snowflakes'

Billionaire Ken Griffin Stops Donations To Harvard, Calls Students 'Whiny Snowflakes'

Mr Griffin accused he accused college of producing “whiny snowflakes”

Kenneth C. Griffin, popularly known as Ken Griffin, a billionaire hedge-fund manager, who has donated more than $500 million to Harvard University over the years has halted financial support for the university. Mr Griffin has accused elite US colleges of producing “whiny snowflakes” instead of future leaders.

Mr Griffin is the latest in a string of wealthy donors who have halted donations amid uproar over the university’s handling of anti-Semitism on campus after the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, CNN reported.

Mr Griffin said that he was pausing support for the university unless it makes significant changes.

At a press conference in Miami on Tuesday, Mr Griffin said, “I’m not interested in supporting the institution.” He added that the university must make clear that it will “resume its role of educating young American men and women to be leaders and problem solvers”.

According to Bloomberg, he accused leading US colleges of producing “whiny snowflakes” instead of future statesmen.

Meanwhile, Mr Griffin made a $300 million gift to Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). According to CNN, the billionaire had earlier praised Harvard as a “great institution” and hailed FAS for being “committed to advancing ideas that will shape humanity’s future, while providing important insight into our past.”

Over the last few months, the university has come under intense scrutiny from lawmakers, students and alumni.

The US Education Department is conducting its investigation of anti-Semitism at Harvard and other schools.

Support from donors like Idan Ofer and Leslie Wexner had been previously suspended, and US Senator Mitt Romney accused the university of neglecting the safety of Jewish students.

Iran: World witnessing moral collapse of West in Gaza

Iran says the world public opinion is witnessing the moral decline and collapse of the West in the Gaza Strip after the discovery of tens of decomposing bodies of blindfolded Palestinians dumped inside a schoolyard in the northern besieged territory.

“The bodies of many Palestinian civilians have been discovered among the debris and garbage in northern Gaza, where the Israeli occupation forces tied their hands and eyes and then executed them,” spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Nasser Kan’ani wrote in a post published on X, formerly known as X, on Wednesday.

In the poignant tableau of Gaza, the global audience bears witness to the decline and moral collapse of the West, the Iranian diplomat pointed out.

Palestinian media outlets reported that the bodies of at least 30 Palestinians were discovered at the grounds of the Khalifa bin Zayed elementary school in Beit Lahia after Israeli forces withdrew from the area.

The bodies were reportedly discovered under a mound of rubble with videos showing several of the body bags tied with white plastic zip ties, normally used for tying cables together.

It remains unclear when the Palestinians were killed; but the school had served as a shelter for thousands of displaced Palestinians before it was bombed and besieged by Israeli forces in early December.

Hamas urges rights groups to document execution of blindfolded Palestinians

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement has called on international human rights organizations “to document the horrific crime” of killing of handcuffed and blindfolded Palestinians in Beit Lahia.

It said in a statement that the discovery attests to a massacre against civilians as the victims were killed in execution-style after being tortured.

The Gaza-based group further noted that Israel is continuing to “exterminate” Palestinian people in defiance of the decisions of the International Court of Justice, “which demanded that they stop the crime of genocide and ethnic cleansing.”

Palestinian foreign ministry demands probe after discovery of mass grave

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called for the formation of an international investigation team to look into the gruesome discovery.

“They were killed while blindfolded and with their hands tied, as clear evidence that they were executed… in the most horrific forms,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The Ministry believes that the discovery of this mass grave in this brutal form reflects the scale of the tragedy to which Palestinian civilians are exposed, the mass massacres and executions of even detainees, in flagrant and gross violation of all relevant international norms and laws,” it added.

The Israeli war in Gaza has killed at least 26,900 people, most of them children and women. Another 65,949 individuals have also been wounded.

"Will Conduct Countrywide Caste Census After Coming To Power": Rahul Gandhi

'Will Conduct Countrywide Caste Census After Coming To Power': Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi expressed gratitude to the people of West Bengal

Malda, West Bengal:

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday asserted that a countrywide caste census would be conducted if the party comes to power at the Centre in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

While addressing a rally as part of ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in West Bengal’s Malda district, Rahul Gandhi accused the RSS and the BJP of propagating hatred and violence.

“We want social justice and the biggest aspect of delivering it will be a countrywide caste census. After we come to power at the Centre, we will conduct a caste census across the nation to find out the number of Dalits, tribals and people from other backward communities,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi had in neighbouring Bihar on Tuesday alleged that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was “feeling trapped” after getting a caste survey conducted in the state under pressure from the Mahagathbandhan partners and the BJP “provided him a way out”.

His remark berating the JD(U) president came just two days after Kumar returned to the BJP-led NDA, dealing a severe blow to the opposition bloc INDIA of which Kumar was regarded as one of the architects.

Accusing the BJP and RSS of propagating hatred and violence, Rahul Gandhi underscored the essence of the yatra, stating, “The word ‘nyay’ (justice) has been attached to the yatra because injustice prevails across the country.” “The BJP government has been meting out injustice to people across the country, be it youth, women or the working class,” he said.

Amid differences with TMC over seat-sharing in West Bengal for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi had on Sunday in northern West Bengal called on the people of the state to spearhead an “ideological battle” against prevailing injustices in the nation.

Expressing gratitude to the people of West Bengal, Rahul Gandhi said, “The people of West Bengal are known for being ideologically oriented. It is your responsibility to stand against the ideology of hate. Personalities such as Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose and Amartya Sen have Bengal origins.” Rahul Gandhi’s statement closely followed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement that her party would contest the Lok Sabha polls alone in the state.
