Iran not to leave any American threat unanswered

Addressing the National Congress for the Commemoration of the 24,000 Martyrs from Tehran on Wednesday, Major General Hossein Salami termed Tehran as the city of standing, grandeur, and civilization.

Referring to great commanders martyred in the country, Salami said that Tehran is a starry sky on Earth with its martyrs.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he reacted to recent developments between Iran and the US, saying, “We are not after war, but will defend ourselves and our glory.”

“We hear some threats from the words of US officials; we tell them no threat will go unanswered,” he added.

Salami also hailed that Iran today is great, strong, and advanced.

“Palestine is on the way to victory and the Zionists cannot keep a small land in the war for months and they will lose,” he added.

Court Sets Aside Visva-Bharati's Eviction Order To Amartya Sen

Suri, West Bengal:

A court in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Wednesday set aside an order of eviction issued by Visva-Bharati on Nobel laureate Amartya Sen from a plot of land in Santiniketan.

The court of Birbhum district judge Sudeshna De (Chatterjee) held that Amartya Sen, who had appealed against the order of eviction issued by the estate officer of the university, and his father, the late Asutosh Sen, had been in continuous possession of the entire 1.38 acres of land since the grant of lease in 1943.

The court set aside the eviction order of April 19, 2023 on Amartya Sen from 13 decimals of land out of a total of 1.38 acres of land at Santiniketan.

The court noted that the university authorities claimed they became aware only in October, 2006 that a lease had been given for 1.25 acres of land when Amartya Sen filed an application for mutation in respect of 1.38 acres of land, but surprisingly action was taken in the form of issuing notices, including statutory notice, only in 2023.

She observed that a notice of March 17, 2023 as well as subsequent action taken by the university asking Amartya Sen for showing cause and ordering his eviction from 13 decimals of land under his occupation are erroneous and not in accordance with law and thus not legally sustainable.

In the 26-page judgement, the court observed that neither in three notices nor in the statutory notice, specific demarcation of the portion of land alleged to be illegally held by Amartya Sen had been described showing its measurement.

Holding that it is an admitted fact that the appellant is staying abroad, the court said that notices were sAmartya ent for a survey of the property, but without affording any opportunity of a hearing and without conducting any survey of the land, the order of eviction was passed.

“It is very surprising to note that the university which slumbered over the issue without taking any effective measures according to law for 80 years, refused to give five months time to the appellant, who wanted the same to meet the queries as he was abroad,” she observed.

The judge held that the act of the university was against the rule of natural justice.

Amartya Sen’s lawyer contended before the court that the eviction order was passed in an arbitrary manner violating the principle of natural justice.

It was claimed in the appeal that it was only after Amartya Sen had made comments about some incidents in Visva-Bharati, the university authorities being annoyed, issued the notices of eviction.

The university authorities stated that the 99-year lease deed on October 27, 1943 in favour of the late Asutosh Sen, the father of Amartya Sen, was executed for 1.25 acres of land.

The estate officer claimed that it was found that the appellant was unauthorisedly occupying 13 decimals of land in excess of his entitlement.

Legal team studying summons, will take decision as per law: AAP on fresh ED notice to Kejriwal

New Delhi: After the Enforcement Directorate issued a fresh summons to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP on Wednesday said its legal team is studying the notice and will take a decision in accordance with the law.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday issued a fifth summons to Kejriwal for his questioning in the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case, official sources said.

It is understood that the fresh summons is for Friday, February 2.

The AAP said Kejriwal and his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann will take part in a protest outside the BJP headquarters against alleged cheating in the Chandigarh mayoral polls on Friday, the day he has been summoned to appear before the ED.

On Tuesday, in a setback to the Congress and the AAP — both partners in the opposition INDIA bloc — the BJP swept the Chandigarh mayoral polls.

The AAP-Congress combine alleged that the presiding officer had tampered with the ballot papers. Priyanka Kakkar, the AAP’s chief national spokesperson said in a brief statement, “We have received news about the fifth summons.

Our legal team is studying it and we will decide what to do as per law. The earlier summonses were illegal and we had sought a reply from the Enforcement Directorate.”

Sources said Kejriwal was supposed to flag off 350 electric buses on Friday but it has been postponed after the summonses were issued. Kejriwal, also the national convenor of the AAP, skipped ED summonses for November 2 and December 21 in 2023 and January 3 and January 18 this year.

He had called these notices “illegal”. It is alleged that the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders allowed cartelisation and favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge repeatedly refuted by the AAP.

The policy was subsequently scrapped and Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, following which the ED registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Hemant Soren Refused To Sign Arrest Memo Until He Resigned: Sources

Hemant Soren Refused To Sign Arrest Memo Until He Resigned: Sources

Transport Minister Champai Soren will be the next chief minister.

Ranchi:

In a seismic — but long-brewing — development in Jharkhand politics, Hemant Soren has been arrested in a money laundering case after resigning as the chief minister.

Top Enforcement Directorate officials told NDTV that Mr Soren refused to sign his arrest memo until he submitted his resignation to Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan. They said the agency’s officials took the chief minister to the Raj Bhavan to resign.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader was then taken to the ED office in Ranchi for questioning and formally arrested. Before his resignation, he was questioned at his residence in the city for at least six hours in connection with the money laundering case linked to an alleged Rs 600-crore land scam.

While Mr Soren’s arrest is not unexpected, the person chosen to take over as chief minister has taken many by surprise. Contrary to the earlier speculation, Mr Soren will not be replaced by his wife Kalpana Soren but by senior JMM leader and transport minister in the outgoing cabinet, Champai Soren.

The ED’s arrest of Mr Soren on Wednesday came two days after a search operation at his Delhi residence on Monday. While the agency’s officials had not found the JMM leader there – leading to jibes from the BJP of him being ‘on the run’ – they had seized Rs 36 lakh in cash and a BMW car which, they claimed, belonged to him.

Earlier in the day, Mr Soren had filed a case against senior officers of the Enforcement Directorate’s Ranchi office under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in connection with Monday’s operation. In his complaint, the JMM leader, who belongs to a scheduled tribe, claimed the action harassed and maligned him and his entire community.

Mr Soren also said that he was not the owner of the BMW or the cash that was seized by the ED and that the agency’s officers had leaked “selective misinformation”.
