Former Pakistan cricket team skipper Shoaib Malik is all set to make his return to the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) after abruptly leaving amid rumours of ‘match fixing’. According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, Malik will rejoin his franchise Fortune Barishal on February 2 and will be available for the team’s final game of the Sylhet leg against Khulna Tigers on February 3. Earlier, media reports claimed that Malik was under the scanner for ‘match fixing’ after bowling three no-balls in a single over during the match against Khulna Tigers. However, he officially refuted those rumours with a post on social media.

“I would like to address and dismiss the recent rumors circulating about my playing position with Fortune Barishal. I had a thorough discussion with our captain, Tamim Iqbal, and we mutually planned the way forward. I had to leave Bangladesh for a pre-committed media engagement in Dubai,” he posted.

“I extend my best wishes to Fortune Barishal for their upcoming matches, and if needed, I am available to support them if needs be.”

“I have always found joy in playing the game and will continue to do so.”

“I want to emphasize the importance of exercising caution when it comes to rumors, especially those circulating recently. I want to make it clear that I strongly refute these baseless rumors. It’s crucial for everyone to verify information before believing and spreading it.”

“Falsehoods can harm reputations and create unnecessary confusion. Let’s prioritize accuracy and rely on credible sources to ensure a clear understanding of the facts. Thank you for your understanding and diligence.”

“Thank you for your love & support as always.”

Shoaib Malik has also been in the news recently for his marriage with actor Sana Javed and the subsequent divorce announcement with Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday said the the State government would go all out to fulfill its promises on provision of employment for the jobless.

Issuing appointment letters for newly recruited nursing officers at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here, he asserted that the government would stick to its stand to provide two lakh jobs within one year.

Stating that jobless youngsters had ignited the flames giving the real momentum to the fight for a separate Telangana, he alleged that however, the 10-year BRS regime had given the least importance to the employment issue. Accusing the BRS leadership of not thinking seriously about ensuring justice for the jobless, Revanth Reddy said his government was making all out efforts to meet the timeline given for fulfilling its assurances.

The State government had revamped the Telangana State Public Service Commission and appointed a new chairman and new members. The recruitment process too would get underway very soon to fulfill the aspirations of the unemployed. Taking strong exception to the criticism leveled at the recruitment process by BRS leaders, the Chief Minister wanted them to realise how happy the candidates were after receiving the appointment letters.

The Chief Minister also targeted former Health Minister T Harish Rao, who had pointed out that the Congress government was claiming credit for the recruiment of nursing officers that was initiated and nearly completed by the BRS government. Alleging that the BRS had nothing much but ensuring positions to “family members”, Revanth Reddy also accused Harish Rao of blaming the government that was making all out efforts for giving jobs to the jobless.

Urging BRS president K Chandrashekhar Rao to “prevail” upon Harish Rao and make him refrain from indulging in such criticism, Revanth Reddy said that even the BRS did not appreciate his government’s efforts, the process initiated for filling job vacancies in the State would not stop.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday directed officials to prepare a comprehensive plan to deal with the increasing traffic congestion in Hyderabad City.

The Chief Minister, who reviewed traffic management and control in Hyderabad at the Secretariat, said a comprehensive plan should be made for traffic control and management in the Greater Hyderabad limits in accordance with the future needs and coordination with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and police department. Expert consultancies should be entrusted with the responsibility and a special study should be conducted for easing traffic in the city, he said.

The Chief Minister asked the police department to give top priority to traffic control within the Greater Hyderabad limits. Stating that law and order police should be used for traffic control duties in the city during peak hours, he said arrangements should be made for the presence of traffic personnel at all major junctions and high traffic areas in the city.

“The police should not rely only on the automatic signal system. Sub-inspectors and constables should be sent on two-wheelers to clear traffic jams,” he suggested.

The Chief Minister said it was decided to upgrade traffic police stations under the jurisdiction of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda Commissionerates and that the number of staff needed for the purpose would be appointed.

Attention should be given to the expansion of main roads and junctions in accordance with the increasing traffic, he said, adding that the feasibility of constructing subways, underpasses and surface ways like LB Nagar Junction should be identified.

When officials brought to the Chief Minister’s notice that traffic problems could be eliminated if the parking problem was overcome and with construction of multi-level car parking centres at as many places as possible, he asked them to identify private and government spaces for parking and also to prepare a special parking policy.

“Concessions should be given to those who come forward to set up parking centres,” he said.

The Chief Minister also ordered to re-examine the criteria for allocating space for roads, parks and infrastructure while giving HMDA permissions to the layouts and asked officials to examine what methods were being followed in other cities in the country and abroad to ensure wide roads.

The Chief Minister asked officials to appoint a sufficient number of Home Guards so that they could be used for manning traffic in the city. “Arrangements should be made to make these appointments within three months. Appropriate training should be given to the new recruits. In the meantime, the home guards working in different departments should be brought back to the traffic department,” he said.

Hyderabad: Indian batters are not known for their sweeping skills but they made a conscious effort to practise that shot in their opening net session ahead of the second Test against England beginning in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

Barring skipper Rohit Sharma, not many Indian batters resorted to the sweep shot in the opening Test which the hosts lost to England by 28 runs, only their fourth defeat at home since 2013.

Sweeps and reverse sweeps on the other hand have emerged as a strong weapon for England batters against the champion Indian spinners who were at the receiving end in the second innings of Hyderabad Test.

Gill, Patidar go big on sweeps

All Indian squad members turned up for the opening session that took place in the afternoon. Struggling for runs, Shubman Gill was seen practising both the conventional and reverse sweep.

For someone who has all the shots, he was criticised for his defensive play in the series opener. In line to make his debut on Friday, Rajat Patidar too went for the sweep and reverse sweep.

All the batters were not sweeping every ball but it was a lot more than what they practised in the Hyderabad nets. Sarfaraz Khan, another player who could make his debut, also had a hit in the nets.

Both him and Patidar also got catching practice in the slips. The sweep doesn’t come naturally to the home team batters and coach Vikram Rathour said that they should play to their strengths.

“It is not something you can try. You need to practice it. If you have more shots it is beneficial. We play in a traditional way. Our strength is going straight and using our feet. We need to do that well and and if we can play some shots, that is always a good addition,” he said.

Joe Root bats left handed

England’s batting mainstay Joe Root set up as a left-hander before turning for the reverse sweep in the team’s session in the morning. Jack Leach, who is nursing an injury on his left keen, did not train on Wednesday and looks a doubtful starter, bringing uncapped Shoaib Bashir into the equation.

City police on Wednesday executed a non-bailable arrest warrant against former cricketer Prashant Vaidya in a cheque bouncing case. Vaidya, who played four One Day Internationals for India in the mid-1990s, was produced before a court which released him on a surety bond, a police official said. He had allegedly purchased steel from a local trader and issued a cheque which bounced, following which the trader demanded that he make fresh payment, said inspector Vitthalsingh Rajput of Bajaj Nagar police station.

The cricketer allegedly refused to pay, so the trader moved the court which issued an NBW against him for skipping court hearings, the official said.

Vaidya currently heads the cricket development committee of the Vidarbha Cricket Association.

Russia And Ukraine Exchange Hundreds Of Prisoners Of War

“Our people are back. 207 of them”: Volodymyr Zelensky said in a social media post. (File)

Kyiv, Ukraine:

Russia and Ukraine exchanged hundreds of prisoners of war on Wednesday, just a week after Moscow said Kyiv had shot down a plane carrying dozens of captured Ukrainian soldiers.

Russia’s defence ministry said 195 of its soldiers were freed, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 207 people — both soldiers and civilians — had returned to Ukraine.

“Our people are back. 207 of them. We return them home no matter what,” Zelensky said in a social media post.

Russia’s defence ministry meanwhile said “195 Russian servicemen… were returned home”.

Uncertainty remains over the circumstances of last week’s crash, in which a Russian Il-76 military cargo plane was downed in a field near its western border with Ukraine.

Moscow says that 65 Ukrainian POWs being carried to a scheduled exchange were killed and that the plane was shot down by Kyiv’s forces.

Kyiv has not outright denied Moscow’s version of events but questioned whether captured Ukrainian soldiers were actually on board, and called for Moscow to publish photos of their bodies or provide other evidence to back up its claims.

The incident had thrown doubt on the future of prisoner exchanges between the two sides.

Ukraine said Wednesday’s exchange was the 50th swap between the two sides since Russia invaded in February 2022.
