India Authorises Apple, Dell, Others To Import Laptops, Tablets: Report

India’s union trade ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. (Representational)

New Delhi:

Apple, Dell, HP, Samsung and Lenovo are among 110 firms authorised by India to import laptops, tablets and personal computers under a new system aimed at monitoring shipments, two government sources said.

Acer, Xiaomi, IBM and ASUS have also been issued import authorisations, the two sources said, under India’s new “import management system” effective from Wednesday.

India announced the new system for laptops, tablets and personal computers last month after it rolled back an earlier plan to impose a licensing regime, following criticism from the industry and Washington.

Companies must register the quantity and value of imports on a portal, with an authorisation valid until September 2024.

India’s union trade ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The sources declined to be named as details of the authorisations have not yet been made public.

Medak: Finance Minister T Harish Rao has said that Congress will give just Rs 15,000 per annum to each farmer irrespective of the extent of land the farmers were holding while Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was promising to increase the Rythu Bandhu Rs 16,000 per acre from existing Rs 10,000 per acre.

China Calls For Global Cooperation At AI Summit, Elon Musk Wants "Referee"

China Calls For Global Cooperation At AI Summit, Elon Musk Wants 'Referee'

The summit is focused on highly capable general-purpose models called “frontier AI”.

Bletchley Park, England:

China said on Wednesday it wanted to work with international partners to manage the oversight of artificial intelligence as political leaders and technology executives gathered at an inaugural AI Safety Summit in Britain to plot the way forward.

Some tech bosses and political leaders have warned the rapid development of AI poses an existential threat to the world, sparking a race by governments and international institutions to design safeguards and regulation for the future.

In a first for Western efforts to manage the safe development of AI, a Chinese vice minister joined leaders from the United States and the European Union, alongside tech bosses such as Elon Musk and ChatGPT’s Sam Altman.

“China is willing to enhance our dialogue and communication in AI safety with all sides, contributing to an international mechanism with global participation in governance framework that needs wide consensus,” Wu Zhaohui said at the start of the summit, according to an official translation of his remarks.

“Countries regardless of their size and scale have equal rights to develop and use AI,” he added.

Elon Musk, who has warned about the risks of AI, said the summit wanted to establish a “third-party referee” for companies developing the technology, so it could sound the alarm when risks develop, and so instil confidence in the public.

The meeting – held at Bletchley Park, home of Britain’s World War Two code-breakers – is the brainchild of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. He wants to carve out a role for Britain as an intermediary between the economic blocs of the United States, China and the EU.

The summit is focused on highly capable general-purpose models called “frontier AI”

Participating governments produced a “Bletchley Declaration”, with 28 countries and the EU agreeing the need for transparency and accountability from actors in frontier AI technology, including how they will measure, monitor and mitigate potentially harmful capabilities.

A collective plan

British digital minister Michelle Donelan said it was an achievement just to get so many key players in one room.

“For the first time, we now have countries agreeing that we need to look not just independently but collectively at the risk around frontier AI,” she told reporters.

China is a key participant, given the country’s role in developing AI technology. However, some British lawmakers have questioned whether it should be there given the low level of trust between Beijing, Washington and many European capitals when it comes to Chinese involvement in technology.

The United States made clear on the eve of the summit that the call to Beijing had very much come from Britain, with its Ambassador to London, Jane Hartley, telling Reuters: “This is the UK invitation, this is not the US”.

US Vice President Kamala Harris also spoke in London on Wednesday, away from the summit, setting out her government’s response to AI, after US President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Monday.

The timing and location of her speech has raised eyebrows among some in the UK’s governing Conservative Party who suggest Washington is trying to overshadow Sunak’s summit – a charge denied by British officials who say they want as many voices as possible. Kamala Harris will meet Rishi Sunak later on Wednesday and attend the summit’s second day on Thursday.

US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo used the summit to announce the launch of a US. AI Safety Institute, and said it would cooperate with Britain’s recently announced institute.

Canada’s minister of innovation, science and industry Francois-Philippe Champagne said AI would not be constrained by national borders, and therefore interoperability between different regulations being put in place was important.

“The risk is that we do too little, rather than too much, given the evolution and speed with which things are going,” he told Reuters.

On the agenda are topics like how AI systems might be used by terrorists to build bioweapons and the technology’s potential to outsmart humans and wreak havoc on the world.

Hyderabad: Taking strong exception to TPCC president A Revanth Reddy’s unsavoury remarks against the Rythu Bandhu scheme, Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) chairman Y Sathish Reddy said his remark had once again proved that the Congress was anti-farmer and that the farming community would teach a fitting lesson to it in the upcoming assembly polls. He demanded Revanth Reddy to tender an unconditional apology to farmers of the State.

Revanth Reddy, while addressing a public meeting in Kollapur on Tuesday, had said the State government was offering Rs.10,000 to farmers as alms, and that the Congress government after coming to power would offer Rs 15,000 to farmers.

Satish Reddy said Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had introduced Rythu Bandhu scheme to help farmers and the TPCC chief was terming it as alms, which was very unfortunate and exposed his real face. The Congress party which ruled the country for 50 years could never even think of designing a scheme like Rythu Bandhu and when the Chief Minister was trying to help farmers through the scheme, Revanth Reddy was treating it as alms, he said.

Hezbollah targets more Israeli military bases

The Israeli regime has been waging a brutal war against Gaza since October 7, when Hamas-led Palestinian Resistance groups launched their biggest operation against the Zionist regime in years. The sneak attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, came in response to the regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.

The following are the latest developments about the war on Gaza:

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas’s Al-Qassam Brigades released a video of its forces repelling Zionist regime invaders and targeting their armored vehicles in Gaza with Yassin-150 rocket launchers.

Hezbollah sends letter to Gaza Resistance fighters:

Hezbollah fighters (Mujahidin) sent a letter to Gaza Resistance fighters on Wednesday telling them, “You rubbed the nose of this fragile entity in the dirt.”

Hezbollah targets two Israeli bases:

Al-Manar TV website which belongs to the Hezbollah Resistance movement in Lebanon reported targeting of the two Zionist sites of Al-Malkiyeh and Al-Bayyad off the two Lebanese border towns of Aytaroun and Blida on Wednesday.

In a later statement, Hezbollah said that its Islamic Resistance fighters targeted headquarters of newly-established Zarit Battalion and the gathering of its vehicles and forces in Khallet Wardah with artillery shells and appropriate missiles, inflicting confirmed casualties.

Palestine Fatah movement attacks Israeli positions:

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade (AAMB), the militant wing of the West Bank’s Fatah political faction said in a statement on Wednesday that, “Our fighters bombarded the military position of Al-Ain Lethalatha where there was a gathering of Zionist regime soldiers in Beiri settlement and east of it.”

Israeli airstrikes hit refugee camp for a second day:

Israeli airstrikes hit apartment buildings in a Gaza refugee camp for the second day in a row Wednesday.

Al-Jazeera television, one of the few media outlets still reporting from northern Gaza, aired video of devastation in the Jabaliya camp near Gaza City and of several wounded people, including children, being brought to a nearby hospital.

The isolated Palestinian territory, home to 2.3 million people, is in the grip of a severe humanitarian crisis amid a siege imposed by Israeli regime.

Hamas will free foreign hostages ‘in the next few days’: official

“We have informed intermediaries that we will release a certain number of foreigners in the next few days,” Abu Obeida, a spokesperson for Qassam Brigades, said in a televised address.

Egypt to receive wounded Palestinians in Gaza via Rafah crossing: sources

Egypt is preparing to receive wounded Palestinians from the heavily bombarded Gaza through the Rafah border crossing for medical treatment, medical and security sources said.

“Medical teams will be present tomorrow (Wednesday) at the crossing to examine the cases coming (from Gaza) as soon as they arrive… and determine the hospitals they will be sent to,” a medical official in Egypt’s city of El Arish told AFP.

A security source at the Rafah crossing confirmed the information.

Israel army confirms refugee camp bombing

Israel’s military has confirmed striking Gaza’s Jabaliya refugee camp, claiming the operation succeeded in killing a key Hamas commander linked to the October 7 operation in Israel by the Palestinian resistance group.

Hamas leader says Israel massacring Palestinians to cover up defeats

A leader of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas says Israel is committing massacres in its war on Gaza to cover up its recent defeats and losses.

The head of the political bureau of Hamas Ismail Haniyeh, speaking in a televised speech on Wednesday, said Israel was “committing barbaric massacres against unarmed civilians,” vowing that “villainy will not save them from resounding defeat.”

Hamas launched a surprise operation into the Israeli-occupied territories last month in response to Israel’s minting atrocities.

Afterwards, Israel launched an intensive bombing campaign against the Gaza Strip, which has so far left 8,796 people dead, including 3,648 children.

‘Israeli bombardment kills captives’

Haniyeh warned that the Israeli massacre costs the regime the lives of its own prisoners who are under heavy shelling in Gaza.

He said that Israeli captives held in the besieged Gaza Strip were subject to the same death and destruction that Palestinians have been facing.

Hamas has reported that dozens of Israelis remain captive under Israeli bombardments. It says those bombardments should stop to allow for talks with the regime on an exchange of captives.

‘Palestinians defeat Israel’s project’

Haniyeh hailed the resilience of the Palestinians in the face of relentless Israeli bombardments, saying they have defeated the Zionist’s project to bring about a new Nakba (Catastrophe) and a mass displacement.

Haniyeh said that ahead of the October 7 operation, Hamas had warned that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “and his fascist [cabinet] will continue their contentious policies.”

The Hamas leader cited the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank as well as increased settler violence and attacks on al-Aqsa mosque in al-Quds as instances of such policies.

He said the region won’t have stability as long as the Palestinians’ rights of sovereignty and return to their homeland are not realized.

Hanyieh also lauded the historic pro-Palestine movement on the global stage and called upon all the free people around the world to continue pressuring the decision makers in their countries to abandon their pro-Israel stance, which he said is tantamount to supporting the genocide in Gaza.

Israeli war planes, naval boats and artillery kept pounding Gaza on Wednesday, inflicting more casualties on the civilian population.

The civilian death toll in Gaza and desperate humanitarian conditions have caused great concern across the world as food, fuel, drinking water and medicine are running short.

CWC 2023: Belligerent performances from Maharaj, Jansen hand South Africa 190-run victory over NZ

Pune: Belligerent performances from Keshav Maharaj and Marco Jansen against New Zealand helped South Africa hand a mammoth 190-run victory.

Earlier, Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen obliterated the Kiwis at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Wednesday.

South Africa was bolstered by Marco Jansen’s twin wicket in the opening Powerplay, and Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee then kept up the good work with scalps of their own. Keshav Maharaj struck in his opening over and removed the reliable Daryl Mitchell, finishing with a figure of 4-46 ensuring the spinners had their say.

South Africa moved to the top of the World Cup 2023 points table with a thumping 190-run victory in Pune. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s NRR took a big hit as they slid below Australia into fourth.

Chasing a target of 358, New Zealand tried their best to go for quick runs but lost Conway pretty early to a sharp catch from Aiden Markram. Rachin Ravindra and Will Young attempted to spread their arms and run fast.

However, in the ninth over, Jansen struck once more, this time getting Ravindra caught at fine leg. The middle-order hitters for New Zealand were needed to provide some lift after being down two without many.

Gerald Coetzee and Kagiso Rabada, however, made sure that the tension didn’t release. Rabada had New Zealand captain Tom Latham caught in the covers, while Coetzee had Young caught behind with a peach.

Mitchell was holding the fort for the Black Caps before he was bowled out by Maharaj in the 19th over.

New Zealand lost half their side at the 20-over mark. South Africa’s bowlers, particularly Maharaj put on too much pressure for New Zealand, and they lost their next four wickets for just 43 runs.

The Proteas pace quartet controlled the opposition’s batting by applying tremendous pressure, picking many wickets, and bowling countless dots. Maharaj was wise to take advantage of this pressure, taking a couple of key wickets before Glenn Phillips struck.

As the lone half-centurion in the Kiwi outfit, Phillips struck several powerful blows against the run of play. Even though Phillips provided some late entertainment, the Proteas easily defeated a tough team like New Zealand in Pune, just as they had dominated games against most of the opponents earlier in the competition.

Earlier, South Africa piled up yet another huge total in the World Cup, this time against New Zealand as they scored 357/4 riding on centuries by Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock.

Centurions De Kock and Van der Dussen shared a 200-run second-wicket stand that laid the groundwork for South Africa to score more than 300 runs. Additionally, a late push from David Miller (53) gave the Proteas a boost.

Brief score: 357/4 (Quinton de Kock 114, Rassie van der Dussen 133; Tim Southee 2-77) vs New Zealand 167 (Glenn Phillips 60, Will Young 33; Keshav Maharaj 4-46).

Two persons died and seven others were missing after a boat carrying them capsized in the Saryu River in Bihar’s Saran district on Wednesday, officials said.

Nine people managed to swim to the bank, while the bodies of two women were fished out, they said.

Officials said they fear that the seven missing persons may also have drowned. However, rescue efforts will continue throughout the night.

Saran District Magistrate Aman Samir told PTI, “The incident took place around 6.30 pm when a boat carrying 18 people drowned in Saryu River near Matiyar Ghat in Manjhi block.” “A rescue operation has been launched and we are trying to identify the deceased,” he said, adding further probe is underway to ascertain the cause of the incident.

Battle between Delhi Dorala and Telangana Prajala, says KTR

Battle between Delhi Dorala and Telangana Prajala, says KTR

Hyderabad: Tearing into Rahul Gandhi’s statement that the forthcoming election was a battle between Telangana ‘dorala’ (feudal lords) and Telangana ‘prajala’ (common man), BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Wednesday said the battle was indeed between feudals and the common man, but the difference being that it was between ‘Delhi Dorala’ (feudal lords from Delhi) and the common man of Telangana.

Addressing party functionaries at Telangana Bhavan, Rama Rao said it was a strange irony that it was this same day in 1956 that Rahul Gandhi‘s grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru had pushed the Telangana region into misery for the next 58 years.

“Your grandfather Nehru forcibly merged Telangana with Andhra Pradesh on this very day in 1956, much against the wishes of the people. The State suffered because of the merger for 58 years. Hundreds of those who fought for a separate Telangana sacrificed their lives for the cause during the rule of Rahul’s grandmother Indira Gandhi. Thousands of people martyred forcing Delhi to concede Telangana,” he said, adding that the fight was still on with another feudal power.

“We fought the Congress bigwigs for decades in the past. Now the fight is with Modi in power at the Centre. But at any cost, Telangana will not bow down to the hegemony of Delhi,” he said, adding that it was ridiculous on part of Rahul Gandhi to talk about corruption with the ‘cash for vote’ accused Revanth Reddy on his side.

Earlier, Rama Rao said there would be policy priorities for the development of women in the State as the party returns to power with K Chandrashekhar Rao as the Chief Minister for the third term. The BRS government with its pro-poor stand was quite successful in reaching out to the needy sections. It was also successful in developing villages and towns alike. Wherever the Chief Minister was addressing party rallies and public meeting, lakhs of people were turning up on their own.

People all over the State were firm on getting Chandrashekhar Rao as the Chief Minister once again. The BRS leadership could provide nine and a half years of stable rule without any unrest or law and order issues. “We could surge ahead with the sole agenda of growth,” he said, also appealing to the electors to ensure that the Kukatpally MLA would get re-elected with the highest majority this time.
