Putin Invites North Korea's Kim Jong Un To Russia: What To Watch Out For

Moscow, Russia:

What should the world be looking for when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un meets Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Russia in the coming days?

The Kremlin said on Monday that Putin had invited Kim Jong to Russia for what will be the North Korean’s second known visit to Russia and his first trip abroad since the COVID pandemic.

Who is Kim Jong Un with?

If he travels with a full military delegation that could give an indication of the nature of the talks. Also of interest is who he meets besides Putin, such as Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu who visited North Korea in July.

The United States has expressed concern over what it calls advancing arms negotiations between the two countries, with White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan urging Kim “not to supply weapons to Russia that will end up killing Ukrainians”.

The United States has accused North Korea of providing arms to Russia, but it is unclear whether any deliveries have been made. Both Russia and North Korea have denied those claims but promised to deepen defence cooperation.

What does Vladimir Putin say?

Analysts say North Korea has huge supplies of artillery shells, rockets and small arms ammunition that could help Russia replenish the vast stocks it has expended in more than 18 months of war in Ukraine, though their quality and the country’s ability to mass produce more is unclear.

Workers may also be something Russia is interested in amid record-low unemployment. Before United Nations Security Council resolutions banned them in 2019, Russia was estimated to host nearly 20,000 North Koreans, according to a report by the Association of Asian Studies.

In return, Russia could offer grain, oil and military technology as Kim looks to develop capabilities such as nuclear-powered submarines and military reconnaissance satellites.

North Korea’s latest Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile – its first ICBM to use solid rocket fuel – has reignited debate over possible Russian links to the nuclear-armed state’s dramatic missile development.

Anything Kim Jong Un says on nuclear weapons

For the past several years, the UN Security Council has been divided over how to deal with North Korea. Russia and China have said more sanctions will not help and want such measures to be eased.

Whatever else comes from the meeting, the summit itself is a sign of support for each country as they face off against international sanctions and pressure.

Putin said after holding his first face-to-face talks with Kim in 2019 that proposed US security guarantees would probably not be enough to persuade Pyongyang to shut its nuclear programme.

Back in 2019, Putin described Kim Jong as “quite open” and as “thoughtful” and “interesting”.

What do Beijing and Washington say?

Communist North Korea was formed in the early days of the Cold War with the backing of the Soviet Union. North Korea later battled the South and its US and United Nations allies to a stalemate in the 1950-1953 Korean War with extensive aid from China and the Soviet Union.

North Korea was heavily reliant on Soviet aid for decades, and the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s contributed to a deadly famine in the North.

Pyongyang’s leaders have often tried to use Beijing and Moscow to balance each other. Kim Jong initially had a relatively cool relationship with Russia and China, which both joined the United States in imposing strict sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear tests.

Anything quirky

Both Putin and Kim Jong know how to catch global headlines.

Back in 2019, the two leaders attended a gala dinner where they toasted each other and watched traditional musical numbers and dancing performed by Russian artists.

The numbers included the Russian classic song “Black Eyes” and a Korean song called “The Great Commander”.

The two men also exchanged gifts. Kim Jong gave Putin a traditional Korean sword, while the Russian leader gave Kim Jong a sabre and a tea service suitable for use on his armoured train.

Kim Jong’s rare foreign trips have occasionally offered more candid moments than what leaks from the tightly controlled state media in the North.

During his 2019 summit with US President Donald Trump in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, Kim spoke to foreign journalists for the first time, during a photo opportunity.

That summit, for which he spent days travelling by train through China, also revealed more interactions between Kim and his sister, Kim Yo Jong. TV footage captured the North Korean leader taking a cigarette break at a railway station in the southern Chinese city of Nanning, with Yo Jong approaching him holding a crystal ashtray in two hands.

At a 2018 Inter-Korean Summit, 12 male bodyguards in dark suits made international headlines after they surrounded Kim’s Mercedes-Benz vehicle and jogged alongside.

Iran thwarted 400 bombings planned by enemies: Intelligence minister

Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib says Iran has recently foiled 400 bombings that were plotted by the enemies in a bid to spark “fabricated riots” across the country.

Speaking during a TV program on Sunday, Khatib said the enemies waged a hybrid war on the Islamic Republic by pursuing acts of terror and trying to provoke riots in the country.

“We receive many reports saying that they (the enemies) are trying to take advantage of another [wave of] fabricated riots. During this time, we collected about 400 bombs, including more than 40 which were supposed to set off in mourning congregations of the first 10 days of [the lunar calendar month of] Muharram,” he added.

Foreign-backed riots broke out in Iran last September, when 22-year-old woman Mahsa Amini died in a hospital in the capital Tehran, three days after she collapsed at a police station.

The findings of an investigation into her death later attributed the tragic incident to Amini’s pre-existing medical condition, debunking claims that she was beaten by the police.

Rioters, nonetheless, went on rampage across the country, causing massive material damage to public property and, in some cases, lynching security forces as well as civilians whom they regarded as supporters of the Islamic establishment.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Khatib said that prior to the riots, the sworn enemies of the Islamic establishment, including separatists, terrorists, and pro-Shah elements, held meetings with over 50 intelligence agencies in different countries and trained 200 media outlets to provoke the riots.

The budget allocated to the 50 intelligence services that are operating against the Islamic Republic is more than Iran’s annual budget, he noted.

He further explained that the main intelligence services acting against Iran are those of Britain, Israel, and the United States, which coordinate and direct the activities of other agencies.

The anti-Iran intelligence services, he continued, have set up a weapons factory near Iran’s border with its products being smuggled into the country.

Iraq voices readiness to coop. with Iran on environment issue

On the sideline of the International Conference on Combating Sand and Dust Storms in Tehran, Nazir Abboud Faza noted that the issue of sand and dust has been the center of attention of all countries in the world and this conference can help with this environmental danger.

Iran, like Iraq, is affected by dust storms, he said, noting that most of the dust in Iraq is influenced by foreign sources, which affects Iran’s climate.

The Iraqi official said “We are ready to cooperate with Iran and other countries regarding dust control, water issues, environment, etc.,” adding, ” Iran and the United Nations welcomed our proposals”.

Abboud Faza stated that combating sand and dust cannot be handled by Iran and Iraq alone and a regional coordination should be established.

The Deputy Minister of Environment of Iraq noted that a regional conference on sand and dust was held in Iran last year, in which two MoUs were signed.

He went on to say that the visit of the Iranian delegation to Iraq was for the implementation of the same MoUs and it was decided to start pursuing the activation of these memorandums in a practical way in four provinces of Iraq and two provinces of Iran.

Abboud Faza pointed out that Iraq will hold a regional meeting with the presence of regional countries, stressing that green economy, water, coexistence of carbon emission, and climate change will be the topics of this conference.

Wasim Akram gives weather update from Colombo ahead of Ind-Pak clash reserve day

Colombo: Pakistan pace legend Wasim Akram offered a weather update to the fans from Colombo as India and Pakistan gear up to resume their Asia Cup Super Four stage clash on the reserve day on Monday. The electrifying match between India and Pakistan in the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2023 was been called off and moved for a reserve day as rain did not allow any play after 24.1 overs on Sunday.

The play was halted for almost four hours today as the rain kept on coming back. India will resume their innings today at 147/2, with Virat Kohli (8*) and KL Rahul (17*) unbeaten. Skipper Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) had hit delightful fifties.

Wasim took to X (Formerly known as Twitter) and said in a video, “Update from Colombo, rain kept happening on and off overnight. Now it is clear, not all clear, you can see the clouds. It is breezy. Currently, it is okay, but let us see what happens when the match starts. Yes, it must be really frustrating to see all this, but weather you cannot control. We can only pray, I hope we get to enjoy some good cricket.”

Ahead of the start of the Asia Cup Super Four clash between India and Pakistan at Colombo on the reserve day, there are some discouraging signs from the Island nation that have put the possibility of finishing the game under doubt. There was heavy rains in Colombo at 7 AM on the reserve day. The skies are extremely cloudy.

Moreover, the ooutfield faced immense damage as there were noticeable wet patches at the R Premadas Stadium, where the match is taking place. More rain will only make these patches worse, delay the game further or even cause an abandonment without any further action. If this match is washed off, India and Pakistan will take one point each. Pakistan will move to the top of the Super Four standings with three points, having won against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka has already registered a win against Bangladesh too, worth two points, almost knocking them out of the competition.

In this case, India’s next two matches against Sri Lanka (September 12) and Bangladesh (September 15) will be must-win matches for India and reach a total of five points.

Losing even one of these matches or two more washouts will reduce India to just three points, which will put India’s qualifying chances in danger. It will be down to how the points table plays out for the rest of the teams due to their results, rain and net-run-rate if India is to qualify for the final with three points. India vs Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka vs Pakistan and India vs Bangladesh are the remaining fixtures before the finals on September 17 in Colombo.

"Warm, Productive": Rishi Sunak On Free Trade Agreement Talks with PM Modi

'Warm, Productive': Rishi Sunak On Free Trade Agreement Talks with PM Modi

India and the UK have concluded 12 negotiating rounds towards an FTA.

London:

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday told lawmakers that he had “warm and productive” discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards a free trade agreement (FTA) with India as he updated the UK Parliament on his recent visit to New Delhi for the India-led G20 Summit.

Addressing the House of Commons after his first visit to India as British Prime Minister, the 43-year-old leader began by flagging his and his wife Akshata Murty’s Indian connections and financial interests in India.

In his detailed parliamentary statement, Mr Sunak went on to highlight his three key aims of the India visit, which included increasing diplomatic pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin over the conflict in Ukraine, climate action and strengthening ties with India.

“I held warm and productive discussions with Prime Minister Modi on strengthening our relationship in defence, technology and a free trade deal between our nations,” Mr Sunak said.

India and the UK have concluded 12 negotiating rounds towards an FTA, which both sides believe will significantly enhance the GBP 36 billion bilateral trade partnership. While in India, Mr Sunak told reporters that things aren’t quite agreed on the pact and that he “won’t rush things”.

“For the record, let me declare that as is a matter of public record, I and my family are of Indian origin. My wife and her family are Indian citizens with financial interests in India,” Mr Sunak told the Commons with reference to Murty’s shares in Infosys – the software major co-founded by her father Narayana Murthy.

Mr Sunak pointed out that even as most G20 leaders came together in Delhi in a spirit of cooperation, one leader was missing from the summit.

“Putin has lacked the courage to face his G20 peers day after day. His actions cause horrendous suffering in Ukraine, violating the UN Charter, threatening European security and disrupting global energy supplies… Leaders united in calling out the human suffering caused by Putin’s war,” he said.

On his other key priority at the summit, he stressed that the UK is seen as a global leader on climate issues.

“At the G20, I made a record commitment of over 1.6 billion pounds for the Green Climate Fund, the single biggest international climate pledge the UK has ever made,” he said.

Against the backdrop of UK media revelations over the weekend of the arrest of a parliamentary researcher on suspicion of spying for China, Sunak told MPs that he met Premier Li Qiang on the margins of the summit in New Delhi to condemn such actions.

“I was emphatic with Premier Li that actions which seek to undermine British democracy are completely unacceptable and will never be tolerated. I also emphasised the UK’s unyielding commitment to human rights, and I was clear on the importance of maintaining stability and international law as the basis for stable relations,” he said.

During questions raised by members of Parliament, Sunak was asked about the case of British Sikh activist Jagtar Johal who is lodged in an Indian jail on serious charges. The British prime minister confirmed that he had raised the matter during his talks with the Indian counterpart and that the UK “remains committed to seeing a resolution” to the case.
