More than 1.67 cr cases including 32.27 lakh pending cases settled in National Lok Adalat: NALSA

New Delhi: More than 1.67 crore cases, which include about 32.27 lakh pending cases and about 1.35 crore pre-litigation cases, were settled during the third National Lok Adalat of the year.

It was held across the country except for Delhi and Manipur, according to a statement.

Legal services authorities across the country, under the guidance of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the stewardship of Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, organised the National Lok Adalat.

Justice Kaul is also the executive chairman of NALSA.

“The approximate value of the total settlement amount in these cases is Rs 1223.90 crore. This settlement of cases will not only ease the burden of the pending cases in courts but will also control future litigation,” a statement issued by NALSA said.

In the Lok Adalat, cases involving compoundable offences, revenue cases and bank recovery cases, motor accident claims, matrimonial disputes (except divorce cases), cheque bounce cases, labour disputes and other civil cases were taken up.

“A large number of recovery matters related to financial institutions, banks, government bodies and private service providers were also taken up as pre-litigation cases, and were settled,” the NALSA statement said, adding that Justice Kaul oversaw the entire process and progress of the Lok Adalat.

Justice Kaul stressed upon the need of quick and affordable access to justice to increase the institutional participation of people and gave necessary directions to NALSA for future course of upcoming National Lok Adalats, it said.

The NALSA said that the Lok Adalats have not only proved to be an efficient substitute for redressal, but have significantly helped in reducing the burden of the Courts swiftly and in a very cost efficient manner.

‘Wars imposed by extraregional powers source of dust storms in region’

Iran’s foreign minister says one of the main reasons behind sand and dust storms in West Asia is the wars imposed on the region by extraregional powers.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remark in a Sunday meeting with Alis Jabana, deputy secretary general of the United Nations and the executive secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, ESCAP.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the International Conference on Combating Sand and Dust Storms, which was held in the Iranian capital city of Tehran on September 9-10.

Mentioning the wars imposed on the region by extraregional powers as a major source of sand and dust storms, Amir-Abdollahian said those powers “caused problems for the regional people and nature just to achieve their goals and with no care for such important issues as the environment.”

Iran’s top diplomat described climate change as another reason for the increasing frequency of sand and dust storms in the West Asia region.

He added that Iran is ready to boost cooperation with ESCAP to reduce the impact of natural disasters and the frequency of sand and dust storms in the region.

Jabana, for her part, highlighted the importance of coordinated regional efforts to fight such storms, while declaring ESCAP’s readiness to support Iran in this regard.

She added that the Iranian president’s address to the conference on Saturday was indicative of the high importance that the Islamic Republic attaches to issues related to the environment.

The International Conference on Combating Sand and Dust Storms was inaugurated in Tehran on Saturday and wrapped up on Sunday.

Addressing the conference, President Ebrahim Raeisi expressed hope that the event would provide the necessary ground “for common thinking and common planning on the important issue of environmental protection.”

“Protection of the environment must not be influenced by political issues and usual diplomatic compliments, and the decisions made in this field must be considered and followed up as an important issue,” he added.

Raeisi also mentioned “using the capacities of scientific and research centers,” “creating a special fund” and “preparing cultural and media annexes” for development projects as Iran’s three proposals for dealing effectively with sand and dust storms.

UK brings forward winter top-up vaccines amid new COVID variant fears

London: The UK health authorities began rolling out their winter vaccine schedule for the most medically vulnerable on Monday, brought forward from a planned early October rollout amid concerns around the new COVID variant BA.2.86.

The National Health Service (NHS) said residents of older adult care homes and people who are housebound will begin receiving their COVID and flu vaccinations from this week and other high risk groups will begin to be invited to get their “top up protection” ahead of winter from next week.

While the variant, BA.2.86, has not been classified as a “variant of concern” by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), it is being monitored closely due to its proclivity to mutate.

“While BA.2.86 has a significant number of mutations to the viral genome compared to other currently circulating COVID-19 variants, the data so far is too limited to draw firm conclusions about the impact this will have on the transmissibility, severity or immune escape properties of the virus,” said Dr Renu Bindra, an Indian-origin Incident Director for the UKHSA.

“It is clear that there is some degree of widespread community transmission, both in the UK and globally, and we are working to ascertain the full extent of this. In the meantime, it remains vital that all those eligible come forward to receive their autumn vaccine as soon as it is offered to them,” she said.

NHS England said it is rolling out its adult COVID and annual flu vaccination programmes in tandem following pressures it faced with a “twindemic” of flu and COVID resulting in high occupancy in hospitals and record pressure on staff last year. It stressed the importance for those who are eligible to top up their protection, even if they have had a vaccine or been ill with flu or COVID-19 before, as immunity wanes over time and the viruses change each year.

“With concerns arising over new COVID variants, it’s vital we adapt the programme and bring it forward for those most at risk, and so I strongly urge everyone eligible to come forward as soon as they can for this important protection in colder months,” said Steve Russell, NHS Director of Vaccinations and Screening.

“Older people and those in clinical risk groups remain at highest risk of serious illness from COVID-19…The vaccine continues to provide the best protection against serious illness and hospitalisation from COVID-19, so please make sure you get vaccinated when offered and encourage loved ones who are eligible to do the same,” added Dr Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunisation at UKHSA.

‘Iranian hackers’ penetrate networks of over 30 Israeli firms: Report

Iranian hackers have managed to break into the networks of more than 30 companies in Israel, a report says.

Israel’s Ynetnews website reported on Monday that the information security company ESET found that what it called Iranian hackers took advantage of a known weakness in corporate email servers of 32 Israeli companies to introduce a backdoor, allowing them to enter their networks.

The cyber security company, which declined to disclose the names of the hacked companies, said the purported Iranian hackers also broke into a company in Brazil and another in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

According to the report, the hacked companies operate in diverse fields, including insurance, medicine, industry, communications, IT, technology, retail, automobile, law, financial services, architecture and civil engineering.

Ynetnews said the hacking group identified itself as Ballistic Bobcat, which is also known by other names, including Charming Kitten, TA543 or PHOSPHORUS as well as APT35/42. It said at least 16 other companies were affected by secondary attackers.

The Israeli regime has targeted Iran on many occasions either directly or by instigating and providing support for the actual perpetrators.

Back in 2012, The Washington Post reported that the United States’ National Security Agency (NSA), its spy service CIA, and Israel’s military had worked together to launch a malware, named as Stuxnet, against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

In retaliation, Iranian hacking groups purportedly operate against targets in Israel.

Back in late 2020, Israeli daily Ha’aretz claimed a group of elite hackers it introduced as Iranians had advanced as far as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office and the regime’s major aerospace company.

Hermosillo: Dhiraj Bommadevara showed some spark when he shocked two-time Olympic team gold medallist Kim Woojin 6-2 but lost his next two matches to return empty-handed as India ended their campaign with a solitary silver medal in the ‘Archery World Cup Final’.

Compound archer Prathamesh Jawakar won the country’s lone medal despite India fielding their biggest-ever contingent of five archers in the World Cup’s season-ending grand finale.

Rising Indian recurve archer Dhiraj began his campaign on a rousing note when he rallied from 0-2 to pull off an upset 28-29, 30-28, 30-28, 29-26 win over the World No. 2 Korean heavyweight in the men’s quarterfinals here on Sunday.

But the 22-year-old Army archer faltered against another Korean Lee Woo Seok as he went down 1-7 (28-28, 27-30, 28-30, 28-29) in the semifinal to be left to fight for the third-place playoff, where he was up against Medellin World Cup winner Mauro Nespoli.

The bronze medal contest went down to the wire with the Italian clinching the issue 6-5 (29-30, 27-27, 25-29, 27-26, 27-28) (10-9) in the shoot-off where Dhiraj dropped a point.

Jayanta Talukdar remains the only male recurve archer to have won a World Cup Final medal — bronze — 13 years ago in Edinburgh. Dola Banerjee is the only Indian with a World Cup Final gold that came way back in Dubai 2007 in the women’s recurve section.

In terms of medals, woman recurve archer Deepika Kumari is the most successful Indian, having won four silver medals at different World Cup Finals.
The event is a year-ending world outdoor competition where a total of 32 archers, eight in each of the four championship categories, fight it out for the gold, silver and bronze medals.

Archers qualify for the tournament by winning one of the circuit’s four stages — in Antalya (Turkey), Shanghai (China), Medellin (Colombia) and Paris (France) — or by climbing high enough in the World Cup Ranking with consistent finishes across the season to make it as a points qualifier. One spot in each category is also awarded to the host nation.

P.V. Sindhu undergoes intensive training at PPBA academy to regain form

Since her return from a prolonged break due to an ankle injury suffered on her way to securing the Commonwealth Games gold last August, Sindhu has faced considerable challenges.

P.V. Sindhu undergoes intensive training at PPBA academy to regain form

New Delhi: Olympic medallist P V Sindhu needs to make a few technical changes in her game and is likely to take some time to regain her form, said former India coach Vimal Kumar, who has observed the Indian ace from close quarters during her week-long stint in Bengaluru.

Sindhu has found the going tough ever since returning from a long lay-off following an ankle injury en route to the Commonwealth Games gold last August.

Desperate to arrest the slide, the 28-year-old, a two-time Olympic medallist, sought the help of the legendary Prakash Padukone and trained under him at the PPBA academy in Bengaluru last week.

“We have been sitting and observing her sessions. Prakash spoke to her her and tried to motivate her. We have also interacted with her coach (Muhammad Hafiz Hashim),” Vimal, who is the director of the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, told PTI.

“She is at the moment low on confidence and physically and mentally slightly in a poor state. She has some work to do and we shouldn’t expect much from her at the Asian Games.

“She is a big player and it is important to give her some time, it might take a few months for her to regain her touch. There are a few technical aspects, where she can make some changes. Some initiatives she needs to take in the technical aspect.” Sindhu, the 2019 world champion, has lost seven times in the first round of BWF tour events this year with a semifinal finish at the Canada Open and two quarterfinals — US Open super 300 and Australian Open super 500 — being the highlight so far.

Ahead of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, Sindhu has pulled out of the China Open Super 1000 and Hong Kong Open Super 500 to focus on the multi-sport event beginning September 23.

She along with her coach Hafiz Hashim then spent the last week training at the PPBA under the former All England champion Padukone.

“The last week has been a good change for her. She had a good experience of learning from Mr Prakash Padukone. He was very kind to be there and watch her practice session,” Sindhu’s father PV Ramana, who had won a bronze medal as part of the Indian Volleyball team in the 1986 Asian Games, said.

“They have been very supportive and has given her great encouragement. It is good to learn from different coaches, everyone has different views and ways. As a player, she might like to go again, every player have their own strategy.” For world number 14 Sindhu, it is a crucial period in her career with the Olympic qualification period for the 2024 Games having started from May 1.

In February, the player from Hyderabad parted ways with Korean coach Park Tae-Sang, who was instrumental in her winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Sindhu worked with SAI coach Vidhi Chaudhary for sometime before roping in Hafiz ahead of the Olympics.
