Redesign helps Palamuru Rangareddy LIS improve TS water availability

Hyderabad: In a transformative move, the redesign of the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS) has improved Telangana’s water availability by leaps and bounds. The redesigning of the scheme now enables the State to lift around 2.4 TMC of water per day from the Krishna River, a significant leap from the previous proposal of 0.5 TMC per day in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. The water storage capacity in the Krishna Basin has surged from less than 7 TMC to an impressive 67.97 TMC.

For several decades, Telangana primarily relied on the Krishna and Godavari River Basins for water supply, leaving it vulnerable to drought during lean rainfall periods. The rulers of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh neglected the recommendations of the National Water Resources Development Commission, both the Bachawat and Brijesh Kumar Tribunals in their reports, suggesting for construction of reservoirs and tanks in Telangana.

As a result, major and medium projects in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh had a total storage capacity of 1,232 TMC, with Telangana’s share at a mere 302 TMC. With changes in designs and locations for projects like Jurala, Telangana continued to suffer due to in inadequate water storage and supply. For instance, the Jurala project’s maximum storage capacity is 11.94 TMC, against its allocated 17.84 TMC. This prevented the State from utilising the allocated water optimally, leaving 70,000 acres without sufficient irrigation facility.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao recognised the importance of water storage for Telangana’s agricultural prosperity. The Kaleshwaram project, with a total water storage capacity of 147 TMC, to serve Telangana’s diverse water needs. The PRLIS was thus redesigned, further enhancing water storage capacity to a staggering 67.97 TMCs from less than 7 TMC. Further, restoration of checkdams and tanks has bolstered water storage potential, ensuring more reliable access to water resources.

Thus, Telangana which once relied on just 8 TMC of water storage capacity in the Krishna basin, is now poised to reach 75.94 TMCs, due to initiatives like the Palamuru Rangareddy LIS. The reengineering of the project with modern infrastructure, now enables the State to lift around 2 TMC per day, using the nine mammoth motor pumps of 145 MW each.

Rishi Sunak calls India visit for G20 “important”

London: As the G20 Summit culminates, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak calls the visit to India “important” and shared some glimpses of his two-day visit on social media.

Sharing the video on his social media ‘X’, he stated, “An important trip to India for the G20, delivering for the UK on the world stage.” In the video message, he highlighted Russian President Putin’s absence in the G20 Summit, and said that “Isolation is the policy that Vladimir Putin has chosen.”

“Global issues matter. They impact all of us. We saw that during Covid and we have seen the devastating consequences of Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, both on the Ukrainian people and the rise in global energy prices. But we are under no illusion these issues can’t be solved in isolation. Isolation is the policy that Vladimir Putin has chosen, ripping up the Black Sea Grain Deal, which has provided a lifeline for millions,” the message said.

Along with the videos of his meeting PM Modi, he added that although Putin was not there at the G20 to face the world but we were there to address some of the biggest issues in the world.

“Putin wasn’t at the G20 to face the world. But we were, working with our allies, our partners from around the world to address some of the biggest challenges that we face. Stabilising the global economy, isolating Putin and strengthening our international relationships. And by doing that, delivering the jobs, growth and security that the British public rightly expect from their Prime Minister,” he added in the video.

The video shared on his social media also showed the moments of joy he shared with other world leaders. He further shared a glimpse of his meetings held with global leaders.

Sunak departed on Sunday after attending a successful G20 Leaders Summit in New Delhi.

Sunak who arrived in the national capital on Friday, accompanied by wife Akshata Murty also offered prayers at the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham temple before paying his respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

Shakib concerned over Bangladesh batting woes, says Asia Cup a ‘reality check’ ahead of WC

Colombo: Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has expressed concern over his team’s below-par performance in the batting department, and said the ongoing Asia Cup is a reality check for them ahead of the ODI World Cup, scheduled in India from October 5 to November 19.

In Saturday’s Super Four game against Sri Lanka, chasing 258, Bangladesh were bundled out for 236. None of their batters managed to cross 30 apart from youngster Towhid Hridoy, who made a fighting 82.

Bangladesh are on the brink of elimination after they suffered a 21-run defeat to Sri Lanka in their second Super Four match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

“Our batting is going downwards for the last six months (in ODIs) since the series against England and later Afghanistan, now in this tournament and we need to work on it,” Shakib was quoted by ICC website.

“We are concerned with our batting and we need to see those areas and work on it so that we can rectify those areas. This tournament before the World Cup will be hugely beneficial because we need to have a reality check,” he added.

In the ongoing Asia Cup, Bangladesh have tasted defeat in three out of their four encounters so far – twice against Sri Lanka and once against Pakistan – and in all three losses, they were bowled out by the opposition. Only once did they manage to cross the 300 mark, in the win against Afghanistan where they posted a strong 334/5.

Since the start of this year, Bangladesh have so far played 16 ODIs: Won 7; Lost 7; No Result 2. They lost a three-match home series to England by a 2-1 margin, won both home and away series against Ireland 2-0 respectively, and lost to Afghanistan at home 2-1 in July.

Shakib also shed light on Bangladesh’s ODI performance, emphasizing their strength in bilateral assignments while acknowledging the need for improvement in big tournaments.

“We always play well in bilateral series and you cannot say we are a bad team but our big test is taken in this kind of tournament where we don’t perform extraordinarily,” he said.

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s past World Cup performances, in which they have won three games in each edition since 2011, he said: “We won three matches in 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019 World Cup so people can say a lot of things but when we have a reality check usually we fail. It is good that the tournament (Asia Cup) was played before the World Cup and everyone will think how we can solve this problem and only after that can we do better.

“We don’t have history because we have not succeeded (in big tournaments) though we played two or three finals in Asia Cup and if we could win it would have been better but we are always a promising side.”

Bangladesh will kick off their World Cup campaign against Afghanistan on October 7 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.

Telangana among top six solar PV module manufacturing States-Telangana Today

Around 75 percent of India’s solar modules are manufactured in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka

Telangana among top six solar PV module manufacturing States

Hyderabad: Telangana is playing a vital role in building the country’s solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing capacity. It is among the top six States manufacturing solar PV modules in the country.

According to the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) list of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), around 75 percent of India’s solar modules are manufactured in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Gujarat is the leading solar module manufacturing State with 32 solar enlisted module manufacturers, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra with seven plants each. Telangana has six plants and Karnataka five.

According to Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) officials, the demand for solar power had been growing rapidly in the country and to meet the demand, a large number of solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing plants were being set up in different States and in Telangana too, the State government had been encouraging manufacturers to set up PV module units.

“Several big companies are showing interest in setting up solar PV module manufacturing plants in Telangana. In the coming days, Telangana will be a major player in PV module manufacturing,” an official said.

India currently depends heavily on imports in the sector and to encourage corporate sectors to take up large scale production of PV modules, the Centre had introduced production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme for manufacturing high-efficiency solar PV modules, the officials said.

Around 110 gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing capacity is set to come online in India by the financial year (FY) 2026, which will make the country self-sufficient. India’s cumulative module manufacturing nameplate capacity more than doubled from 18 GW in March 2022 to 38 GW in March 2023.

By 2030, India is targeting about 500 GW of renewable energy deployment, out of which ~280 GW is expected from solar PV. This calls for 30 GW of solar capacity every year until 2030.

Iran very serious in confronting hostility of enemies: Leader

Addressing a group of people from Sistan and Baluchestan, and South Khorasan provinces on Monday, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said that the world is on the verge of an evolution.

This transformation includes several issues, including the weakening of the world’s arrogant powers, he said, adding that arrogant powers such as the US and some European countries have weakened and will become weaker.

The emergence of new regional and global powers is another part of this global transformation, he added.

The Leader went on to say that based on the received information, the American government has created a group, the mission of which is to create a crisis in countries, including Iran.

The American government has found out that there are several sensitive issues in Iran that can be turned into crises through provocation, Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted, referring to the diversity of ethnic groups, religions, and the issue of gender and women.

According to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, such dreams will never come true.

“The enemies are serious in their enmity and plotting, and we are also very serious in confronting them,” the Leader noted.

“America interfered in various governments, but the condition is now declining. Today, America has to create a combined war in order to hit the governments that it wants to hit, which is very costly for it, and will not work out in the end.”

As for the decline of Europe, the situation is no better.

“You hear these days how the African countries that were under the influence of France are rising against France one after another,” the Leader said.

“The Western powers, which are headed by America and then Europe, do not have the former power today, they are weakening and this weakness is increasing. Day by day, new powers are rising; this is a great global change.”

Nevertheless, “When we say the enemy is becoming weak, it doesn’t mean that it cannot plot, be hostile, and strike, it can,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“They are busy planning, we should not sleep, we should not be negligent.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “We must be careful not to go astray, not to make mistakes, not to exchange right for wrong.”

“The Qur’an has given us a standard. The Qur’an says that ‘Muhammad is the Messenger of God and those who are with him.’ Are we with the Prophet or not? This is the way, it has a sign.

“’And those who are with Him are bitter against the infidels.’ If you see that the way we are going is a path that makes the infidels happy, know that you are not bitter against the infidels. So you are not with the Messenger of God, you are not with the Prophet.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said, “We must be focused. We must know what we are doing and saying. The words we utter should not play into the enemy’s plan and complete its puzzle. This is dangerous.”

“Care must be taken that this does not happen. If we are careful, the enemy cannot do a damn thing.”

New York: U.S. Open women’s runner-up Aryna Sabalenka and men’s champion Novak Djokovic each moved up one spot to No. 1 in the rankings on Monday — Sabalenka’s first week atop the WTA, and Djokovic’s record-extending 390th atop the ATP — while women’s champion Coco Gauff rose to a career-high No. 3 in singles and No. 1 in doubles.

Sabalenka, a 25-year-old from Belarus, is the 29th player to top the women’s list since computerized rankings began in the 1970s.

Her run in New York, which ended with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Gauff in Saturday’s final, allowed Sabalenka to move up one spot and overtake Iga Swiatek, who slid to No. 2 after holding No. 1 since April 2022. Swiatek won the trophy at year ago but lost in the fourth round this time.

“All year, I’ve been playing well,” said Sabalenka, who won her first major title at the Australian Open and reached the semifinals at the French Open and Wimbledon. “I put her, kind of like, under pressure.” Gauff, a 19-year-old from Florida, is next in singles, rising three spots from No. 6, and she and partner Jessica Pegula jointly went up to No. 1 in doubles after making it to the quarterfinals in that event. They had been together at No. 6 behind No. 1 Katerina Siniakova before the U.S. Open, but Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova lost in the second round a year after taking the championship.

This is the first time since August 2003 that the players occupying the WTA’s top rankings in singles and doubles switched on the same day.

Djokovic’s 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Daniil Medvedev on Sunday gave the 36-year-old from Serbia his 24th Grand Slam singles title, matching Margaret Court on the all-time list and giving him sole possession of the record for the professional era, one ahead of Serena Williams.

Djokovic — who already owned the mark for most time at No. 1 in tennis by a man or woman — entered the U.S. Open at No. 2 behind Carlos Alcaraz, who was the 2022 champion at Flushing Meadows but lost to No. 3 Medvedev in the semifinals.

This is the seventh switch between Djokovic and Alcaraz in 2023. The last time there were more changes to the ATP’s No. 1 in a single season was 1999, when there were eight.

Holger Rune remained at No. 4 on Monday, followed by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev, who each moved up two places. Casper Ruud, last year’s runner-up to Alcaraz in New York, dropped from No. 5 to No. 9 after exiting in the second round.

Ben Shelton, a 20-year-old American, soared into the top 20 for the first time, climbing from No. 47 to No. 19 with his first semifinal appearance at a major tournament. He was eliminated by Djokovic.

Elena Rybakina stayed at No. 4 in the WTA rankings, followed by Pegula, and Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova went from No. 9 to a career-best No. 6 after reaching the U.S. Open quarterfinals. She was defeated at that stage by Madison Keys, whose semifinal run pushed her up six spots to No. 11.

Ons Jabeur, a three-time major finalist including at last year’s U.S. Open, bowed out in the fourth round this time and went from No. 7 to No. 9.

FinMin initiates Budgetary exercise for 2024-25; seeks inputs from various ministries

The Finance Ministry has initiated the process to prepare the interim Budget for 2024-25 by inviting inputs on expenditure from different ministries and departments.

New Delhi: The Finance Ministry has initiated the process to prepare the interim Budget for 2024-25 by inviting inputs on expenditure from different ministries and departments.

It will be an interim Budget as the elections for the Lok Sabha are due early next year. The full Budget for FY25 will be presented after the formation of the new government after the general elections.

“Pre-budget meetings chaired by Secretary (Expenditure) shall commence in the second week of October 2023…shall continue till around mid-November, 2023,” according to the Budget Circular (2024-25) of the Budget Division under the Department of Economic Affairs of the Finance Ministry.

According to the circular dated September 1, financial advisers should ensure that the necessary details required should be submitted by October 5, 2023.

The Budget Estimates for 2024-25 will be provisionally finalised after completion of pre-Budget meetings, it said.

During the pre-budget meetings, the requirement of funds for all categories of expenditures, along with receipts of ministries or departments, is discussed.

Besides, non-tax revenues, including arrears of non-tax revenue and indicative budget figures, will be discussed on a net basis.

All ministries or departments should submit details of autonomous bodies or implementing agencies for which a dedicated corpus fund has been created, the circular said, adding the reasons for their continuance and requirement of grant-in-aid support, and why the same should not be wound up, should be explained.

This will be the sixth Budget of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who presented her first full Budget in July 2019.

The Budget for the current fiscal had projected a nominal growth rate of 10.5 per cent, while the fiscal deficit was pegged at 5.9 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

The interim Budget 2024-25 is likely to be presented on February 1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government scrapped a colonial-era tradition of presenting the Budget at February-end.

Former finance minister Arun Jaitley started the practice of presenting the annual Budget on February 1 in the year 2017. With the preponement of the Budget, ministries are now allocated their budgeted funds from the start of the financial year beginning in April.

This gives government departments more leeway to spend as well as allows companies time to adapt to business and taxation plans.

Previously, when the Budget was presented at the end of February, the three-stage Parliament approval process used to get completed sometime in mid-May, weeks ahead of the onset of monsoon rains. This meant government departments would start spending on projects only from August-end or September, after the monsoon season ended.

Philippine Nobel Winner, Journalist Maria Ressa Acquitted Of Tax Fraud

Philippine Nobel Winner, Journalist Maria Ressa Acquitted Of Tax Fraud

After the verdict was announced, Ressa told reporters she felt “good” about the decision.

Manila, Philippines:

Philippines Nobel laureate Maria Ressa and her news site Rappler were acquitted of tax fraud by a trial court on Tuesday, in another legal victory for the embattled journalist.

Ressa, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 alongside a Russian journalist, is head of Rappler, which earned a reputation for its intense scrutiny of former President Rodrigo Duterte and his deadly war on drugs.

After the verdict was announced, Ressa told reporters she felt “good” about the court’s decision.

Ressa’s acquittal was expected after she was cleared of similar tax charges nine months ago.

Those charges stem from a 2018 government indictment that accuses Ressa and Rappler of dodging tax payments after failing to declare proceeds of a 2015 sale of depositary receipts to foreign investors.

Ressa, 59, is currently on bail and was convicted in 2020 for cyber libel in one of several cases against the website filed by government agencies. She maintained those cases were politically motivated.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who has been in office for 14 months, has said he would not interfere in the court cases against Rappler.

Rappler is still operating unhindered pending its appeal against a closure order from the securities regulator.

The Philippines is ranked 132 out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index, describing its media as “extremely vibrant despite the government’s targeted attacks and constant harassment” against journalists that are “too critical”.
