Warangal: In a significant move, the State government is going to transform podu lands into fertile grounds for cultivation through the ‘CM Giri Vikasam’ scheme for the benefit of the tribal community.

The Giri Vikasam scheme, an ambitious initiative of the State government, aims to boost sustainable agricultural development among Scheduled Tribes (STs) across the State. The government distributed pattas (title deeds) to 37,987 tribals in 38 different mandals within the erstwhile Warangal district, covering a vast expanse of 1,02,256 acres of podu lands.

To ensure the success of this transformation, the ITDA has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive survey. Budget estimates will be prepared after thorough verification by all departments concerned.

Notably, the government has also extended the benefits of the Rythu Bandhu scheme to the podu lands. Since a majority of them are limited to cultivating dry crops, the government is taking decisive steps under the Giri Vikasam scheme to level the lands, supply electricity and provide irrigation by installing bore-wells and motors.:

ITDA (Eturnagaram) Project Officer Ankit said: “Under the Giri Vikasam scheme, we have initiated a field-level survey to identify areas requiring power and water facilities. We are forming groups of farmers, ranging from three to ten acres per group, and once all departments confirm feasibility, funds will be allocated for electricity, motors, and land development.”

In pursuit of this mission, the PO recently held a teleconference to assess the current status of three-phase power supply facilities in villages across Mulugu and Jayashankar Bhupalpally districts. Following this assessment, authorities have swiftly sprung into action. Previously, ITDA had identified unproductive agricultural lands block by block and invested a substantial sum of Rs 18.92 crore in borewells, tubewells, and electrification, benefiting 2,623 individuals in the former Warangal district.

Forced unveiling in freedomistan

It gives itself the right to lecture non-Western countries on human rights and even sanction some when it’s politically fit. But the continent, filled with angry rainbow-flag-toting activists, does not try to live up to the same standards when it comes to respecting the rights of Muslim women living in Western societies.

As a Muslim woman leading a life in Europe, you are automatically seen as oppressed and abused. In European’s eyes, Females honoring their religion by wearing the Hijab are defenseless individuals who have been forced to cover their bodies at the expense of their lives. It doesn’t matter if you are a highly educated woman working alongside the men, you are considered to be oppressed once you put on an Islamic attire. It is as if Europe gives its people the freedom to wear whatever they want, but only if they don’t decide to cover themselves “too much”.

France is a European country which regularly makes headlines for its discriminatory laws and regulations towards Muslim women. France’s Islamophobic policies, masked with a secular patina, are some of the harshest in the world.
The country incentivized hatred against Muslim women last month when it decided to ban abaya and qamis – long and loose garments worn by some Muslim women and men, respectively – in public schools.

France’s top administrative court upheld the ban saying it was based on French law, which did not allow anyone wearing visible signs of any religious affiliation in schools.
There are similar discriminatory laws in other European countries as well. At least 9 countries in the European Union (out of 27) have implemented some type of restrictions against Muslim women in regards to their attire.

The Danish government banned female judges from wearing headscarves in May 2008. Danish authorities justified that judges should “strive for religious and political neutrality” and hence cannot use “religious symbols” like head-coverings.  Denmark is currently considering extending this ban to public schools with the Danish Commission for the Forgotten Women proposing a similar prohibition on August 24, 2022.

In Germany, eight out of sixteen states have restrictions on wearing the hijab for female teachers. These states include Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, the Saarland, Bremen, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Berlin. Berlin, as a city-state, has banned all religious symbols in public institutions, including headscarves.

A law commonly known as the “burqa ban” was adopted by the Dutch government in January 2012, which banned all face coverings with offenders facing fines of up to 390 euros. However, this prohibition does not apply to other types of face coverings like the ones worn for sports or health.

The EU itself has tried to limit Muslim women too. In a controversial ruling in October 2022, the Court of Justice of the European Union granted companies the right to ban headscarves. “The internal rule of an undertaking prohibiting the visible wearing of religious, philosophical or spiritual signs does not constitute direct discrimination if it is applied to all workers in a general and undifferentiated way,” the court ruled.

With the recent Quran desecration acts in Sweden and Denmark, the French president’s tendency to blame immigrants for economic and social disorder, the Hungarian Prime Minister blaming diseases on foreigners and other similar instances of Islamophobic sentiments among European politicians, it seems that authorities in Europe have turned discrimination against Muslims into an active policy. As a Muslim, you are always in the wrong and you need your lifestyle to be fixed, whether you try to lead a peaceful life in your home country or are forced to immigrate once your home is decimated by the West.

Golf: Sharma hangs in to stay in contention at Irish Open

Shubhankar Sharma endured a testing mid-round crisis to salvage the day with a two-over 74 that kept him in the hunt for his first DP World Tour title since 2018

Kildare: India’s Shubhankar Sharma endured a testing mid-round crisis to salvage the day with a two-over 74 that kept him in the hunt for his first DP World Tour title since 2018.

Sharma, who led after the first round and co-led after the second, dropped to T-4 at 10-under with a birdie on the last hole.

He trailed the leader Hurly Long of Germany by three shots with halfway co-leader Jordan Smith (73) in second at 12-under and four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy (66) in third at 11-under.

India’s other challenger this week, Manu Gandas missed the cut.

Sharma shared the fourth spot with Kiwi Ryan Fox (66), Frenchman Julien Brun (69), Scottish pair of Grant Forrest (69) and Calum Hill (72) and England’s Ross Fisher (74).

Sharma, starting the day in the final group and at 13-under, opened with five pars before he dropped a double bogey on the Par-4 sixth. Another bogey followed on the eighth and he turned in 3-over with no birdies.

On the back nine, the two-time DPWT winner, who logged the best-ever result by an Indian at the Open in July at T-8, fought back. He birdied the 10th, before giving away two shot on the 12th and the 13th. He birdied the 17th and closed at 74.

Long will take a one stroke lead into the final round with past champion and World Number Two Rory McIlroy just two shots back.

Long, of Germany, carded a two under par round of 70 on the Palmer North Course at the 2006 Ryder Cup venue, with a birdie at the last taking him to 13 under par, one stroke ahead of England’s Jordan Smith, who also birdied the 18th to sign for a one-over par 73.

Four-time Major Champion McIlroy started the day eight strokes off the pace but carded a six under par 66 to post an early clubhouse target of 11 under par at The K Club, the same venue where he claimed a famous Irish Open victory in 2016.

McIlroy will go in search of a third victory on the 2023 Race to Dubai, with Long seeking a maiden title and Smith hunting a third DP World Tour crown, following on from his win at last year’s Portugal Masters. McIlroy earlier won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and the Genesis Scottish Open.

Three-time DP World Tour winner Ryan Fox matched McIlroy’s six under par 66 to move into a share of fourth place.
Shane Lowry is one of a number of competitors on eight under after signing for a level par 72.

Hyderabad emerges GCC hubs of India

Hyderabad is now emerging as one of the sought after cities in the country for Global Capability Centres (GCC) of multinational companie

Hyderabad: Having already established itself as India’s most preferred investment destination for global companies, Hyderabad is now emerging as one of the sought after cities in the country for Global Capability Centres (GCC) of multinational companies.

In the first half of this year, Hyderabad has been successful in impressing MNCs to set up seven new GCCs and to expand four existing ones, all in diverse fields. The only other city that matched the total of 11 in this aspect was Bengaluru, where three GCCs were expanded and eight new ones were announced.

According to NASSCOM’s India GCC Trends half yearly analysis report, Hyderabad, along with Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune, have emerged as key innovation hubs.

Besides assessing the developments in the first half of the year, the NASSCOM GCC trends report puts the spotlight on automotive, aerospace and defense sectors. According to the report, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and NCR are the three major hubs for aerospace and defense GCCs. These cities account for more than 80 per cent of the total GCC units in the country.

Bengaluru and Hyderabad house 75 per cent of the total installed talent in aerospace and defense GCCs. At present, though Bengaluru is ahead in terms of GCC units distribution in the aerospace sector, Hyderabad is fast catching up.

Nearly 22 per cent of the aerospace and defense GCCs have their centres in three or more cities. ER&D, IT, and BPM functions have approximately 62 per cent, 12 per cent and 26 per cent of the total installed talent in aerospace and defense respectively. Approximately, 50 per cent of the total aerospace and defense GCCs in India are US-based.

In the automotive sector, Hyderabad stands fifth among the cities in the country with GCC units distribution.

KL Rahul reflects on recovery: Embracing the ‘boring’ side of physiotherapy after prolonged break from game

KL Rahul reflects on recovery: Embracing the ‘boring’ side of physiotherapy after prolonged break from game

Colombo: Indian middle-order batter and wicketkeeper KL Rahul on Sunday recalled his journey back into the team after sustaining an injury and how time away from the game helped him discover love and enjoyment for training.

India will take on arch-rivals Pakistan in their Asia Cup Super Four clash in Colombo on Sunday. KL will also be making his return to the team after not featuring in the Asia Cup group stage due to a niggle.

Talking about his return from injury in a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), KL said, “I am feeling good. It is good to be back with the team. It has been quite some time since I have been away. I am glad everything worked out on schedule, happy I could tick all the boxes.”

Talking about his thigh injury, which happened during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and his franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 1, he said that he suffered a full tendon tear. After scans made it clear that the injury was big, KL had no choice but to undergo surgery.

“I tried chasing a ball, but my tendon snapped. I had a full-fledged tear, my tendon ripped apart from my quadriceps. When it happened, my family, franchise and everyone had their fingers crossed hoping it was not something big, but a small strain that could go in two weeks. But after scans, we realised it was a full tear and it became clear that I could recover from it after going under the knife. It took us a few days to decide where I was supposed to go for surgery and who was the best surgeon and I would like to thank BCCI, physios, and doctors who made sure I got the best treatment and surgery. You need the support of people at such times and I had it,” said the batter.

KL highlighted the need for rest and recovery time after surgery and how one must respect his/her body for undergoing a “big repair”.

“During the surgery, you have to respect that your body has gone through something big, a big repair and you must give it enough time to recover. Skills-wise, I knew I needed just a few weeks to get back in touch. I gave myself 2-3 weeks to get back to playing cricket and get the skill part of it. The big part was to feel confident in my own body, stay pain-free, free in movement that needed a lot of intensity. I knew I had to keep wickets on my comeback. Me and physios were concerned about it and there was a question mark in my head. When you are squatting down for every ball, it needs a lot of strength in your quads.

You need your body to support you and feel pain-free,” said KL.

The batter said that getting over the fact and a mental battle that he could feel pain was a big challenge for him, but it happened as he took things step by step under the guidance of trainers, and physios of the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

“Sometimes, you fight a mental battle where you feel you might feel pain and it does not let you focus on skills. Getting over that fear and pain was a really big challenge. It can only happen when you take things step by step. NCA trainers, and physios guided me, on when to step up, and step down. That is how skill took place, I started sprinting, but during that process, I developed a small niggle just before I could come back, which was a big downer. I was ahead of the schedule and felt I could come back before the Asia Cup and give myself some time. But that niggle pushed me back two weeks. There were ups and downs during recovery. I was ready mentally, this helped me a lot,” he said.

“When I had surgeries and injuries previously, I found myself bored, not knowing what to do, not having any motivation to wake up and do physio. It becomes boring and frustrating. But this time, it did not happen. I do not know what it was, but I managed to get the motivation to do the boring stuff. Being away from the game for such a long time, I wanted to enjoy something as boring as physio, which is not as rewarding as playing a game of cricket. I tried to enjoy each day as it came, it made it easy. It felt that time went by quickly. There were a couple of weeks that felt really long, but mostly it was happening really fast. I was training, improving every day so I felt motivated to go back and train,” he added.

On a concluding note, KL said that he is happy being back on the side and getting back his rhythm.

“Happy to be back in the team, get back that rhythm of playing for 50-overs, 100-overs, wicketkeeping for 50 overs, batting as long as my time needs and getting back that adrenaline. We are playing some quality teams in the coming days, I hope all goes well. I am confident, and have prepared well,” KL signed off.

Amazon to invest $15 mn in nature-based projects in Asia-Pacific-Telangana Today

Amazon to invest $15 mn in nature-based projects in Asia-Pacific

New Delhi: Amazon on Monday announced to invest $15 million in nature-based projects to support communities, climate resilience, and biodiversity in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

The company will invest its first $3 million from the fund’s APAC allocation to support nature-based projects in India.

Amazon will be working with the Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS) to support communities and conservation efforts in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is home to more than 30 per cent of all of India’s wildlife species, including the world’s largest population of wild Asiatic elephants and tigers.

Amazon’s funding of $1 million will help CWS establish the ‘Wild Carbon’ programme, which will support 10,000 farmers in planting and maintaining one million fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal trees.

“To protect the region from the impacts of climate change and preserve biodiversity, we will need both large-scale and local action – and we’re committed to investing in both,” Kara Hurst, Amazon’s Global VP for Sustainability, said in a statement.

Amazon’s direct contribution will allow CWS to partner with 2,000 family farms and plant 3,00,000 trees over three years.

CWS will also use project funds to develop state-of-the-art monitoring systems using drone and remote sensing technology and on-the-ground surveys to verify program outcomes, advancing research on the potential positive impact of farmers on reforestation opportunities.

“Amazon’s support enables us to plan and build a programme that is self-sustaining in the long term. The farmers will receive upfront support to select tree types that serve both their livelihoods and the wildlife, whilst also receiving technical assistance, agroforestry training, and support for replanting failed saplings,” said CWS Executive Director Dr Krithi Karanth.

Further investments in projects located in India and other APAC countries will be announced in the coming months, the company said.

This funding comes from Amazon’s $100 million Right Now Climate Fund, which was established in 2019 to support nature conservation and restoration projects that improve climate resilience and biodiversity while driving social and environmental benefits in the communities where they operate.

Philippine Nobel Winner, Journalist Maria Ressa Acquitted Of Tax Fraud

Philippine Nobel Winner, Journalist Maria Ressa Acquitted Of Tax Fraud

After the verdict was announced, Ressa told reporters she felt “good” about the decision.

Manila, Philippines:

Philippines Nobel laureate Maria Ressa and her news site Rappler were acquitted of tax fraud by a trial court on Tuesday, in another legal victory for the embattled journalist.

Ressa, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 alongside a Russian journalist, is head of Rappler, which earned a reputation for its intense scrutiny of former President Rodrigo Duterte and his deadly war on drugs.

After the verdict was announced, Ressa told reporters she felt “good” about the court’s decision.

Ressa’s acquittal was expected after she was cleared of similar tax charges nine months ago.

Those charges stem from a 2018 government indictment that accuses Ressa and Rappler of dodging tax payments after failing to declare proceeds of a 2015 sale of depositary receipts to foreign investors.

Ressa, 59, is currently on bail and was convicted in 2020 for cyber libel in one of several cases against the website filed by government agencies. She maintained those cases were politically motivated.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who has been in office for 14 months, has said he would not interfere in the court cases against Rappler.

Rappler is still operating unhindered pending its appeal against a closure order from the securities regulator.

The Philippines is ranked 132 out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index, describing its media as “extremely vibrant despite the government’s targeted attacks and constant harassment” against journalists that are “too critical”.
