Trent Bridge’s pavilion end renamed after Stuart Broad

Broad’s Test record boasts an impressive 604 wickets, ranking him fifth in cricket history, surpassed only by Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, James Anderson, and Anil Kumble.

Trent Bridge’s pavilion end renamed after Stuart Broad

Nottingham: The Pavilion End at Trent Bridge is set to be renamed in honour of legendary England fast-bowler Stuart Broad. The former right-arm pacer retired from international cricket after this year’s Ashes series, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Overall, Broad has 604 Test scalps – the fifth most in the format’s history, behind only Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, James Anderson and Anil Kumble. He also took the sole Test hat-trick to have been taken at Trent Bridge, against India in 2011, and the best bowling figures in the venue’s near 200-year history – 8/15 against Australia in 2015.

“When I first visited Trent Bridge, as a kid with dreams of pulling on the Nottinghamshire and England jerseys, I could never have imagined I’d be fortunate enough to enjoy so many memorable moments in the game.”

“It’s a bit surreal to think that part of the ground where I fell in love with cricket will now bear my name. Playing for Notts has meant so much to me, and I’ve been so grateful that, wherever my career has taken me, I’ve always been able to come home to Trent Bridge. As someone who is Nottingham born and bred, this is an incredibly proud moment for myself and my family,” said Broad in a statement.

Broad took 190 wickets in 43 appearances for county and country at his home ground. Across his career, he claimed 1,268 senior scalps. Apart from being an Ashes winner four times, Broad was also a member of England’s 2010 T20 World Cup winning side and won the 2010 County Championship, 2022 Division Two title and two one-day finals with Nottinghamshire.

“Stuart’s achievements at the highest level are quite remarkable – it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever see another English bowler match his record over the past 15 years, let alone one from within our county’s borders.”

“Throughout that time, Stuart has been the perfect ambassador for Nottinghamshire – not just through his deeds with the ball, but also through his unstinting commitment to the cause for his county and his continued championing of Trent Bridge on the world stage.”

“It feels only fitting that the end of his home ground where he recorded some of his greatest achievements will now serve as a permanent honour to his cricketing career,” said Nottinghamshire Chairman Andy Hunt.

Cricket World Cup 2023: 5 Emerging Players To Watch Out For

The Cricket World Cup, which starts in India on October 5, will bring together the cream of the white ball world. The crowds will hurry to watch established stars like Ben Stokes, Virat Kohli and Trent Boult but they will also be on the lookout for the new generation of players to emerge from the tournament. AFP picks out five who will be vying to make a name for themselves.

Noor Ahmad (Afghanistan)

It is always exciting when someone a little bit different comes along and 18-year-old Noor is certainly that, a left-arm wrist spinner with a high action and good control as well as decent pace. He made his Under-19 debut for Afghanistan when he was just 14 and was only 17 when he made his full ODI debut against Sri Lanka last year and then took 4-10 against Zimbabwe in his only T20I thus far. Noor starred for Gujarat in the IPL and is in demand from numerous franchises around the world – in India he will offer important back-up to his idol and influence Rashid Khan.

Expert view from Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan: “That little kid, he just wants to learn. He has got the opportunity now and I am so, so happy he has been delivering. It’s great news for Afghanistan cricket.”

Matheesha Pathirana (Sri Lanka)

Since the retirement of the great Lasith Malinga after the 2019 World Cup, Sri Lanka have been looking for a shock bowler who can take wickets and tie up the batsmen at the close of the innings. In Pathirana they appear to have found the most like-for-like replacement possible. Also a slinger, with an even lower arm action than his model Malinga, the 20-year-old speedster with a penchant for yorkers, stepped into the fast lane when MS Dhoni pulled him into the Chennai IPL squad late in 2022 as a replacement for Adam Milne. With a perfect sense of theatre, he took the wicket of Shubman Gill with his first ball. He only made his ODI debut against Afghanistan in June but if Sri Lanka lift the trophy for the second time it will surely be part due to ‘Baby Malinga’.

Expert view from Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood: “He absorbs information very quickly, and he’s very quickly able to apply that to his game. He does it his way.”

Gus Atkinson (England)

When England won the 2019 World Cup, they swore by pace. In Jofra Archer and Mark Wood they had two quicks who could go beyond the 90mph mark on a consistent basis. Wood is back again but with Archer still recovering from a long-term elbow injury — he will be in India an official reserve — the mantle has been handed to Atkinson. The 25-year-old paceman broke through this year with some fine early season performances that earned him an England call-up for the ODI series against New Zealand in September. He only took one wicket in three matches but it is the promise of a 95mph bowler that is exciting the English.

Expert view from former England captain Alastair Cook: “He doesn’t look like he uses that much effort to get the ball down at a decent lick. It looks like there is a bit more untapped pace.”

Teja Nidamanuru (Netherlands)

If it is the dream of every Indian cricketer to play in a World Cup, not many of them would expect to do it for the Netherlands. Such is the case for 29-year-old Nidamanuru who was born in Vijayawada in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh but brought up in New Zealand — before hitching his wagon to the Dutch. Nidamanuru qualified for them in May 2022 and struck an impressive half-century on debut against West Indies. But it was his 76-ball 111 against the two-time World Cup winners in Zimbabwe in June as the Dutch tied the 375 target, that marked him out as one to watch. The West Indies, who lost the game in the Super Over, missed out on the World Cup for the first time with the Dutch taking their place at the top table.

What he says: “It’s surreal to even just be sitting here and talking of playing in a World Cup. The road to it has been hard but it feels worth it.”

Towhid Hridoy (Bangladesh)

From his days in the Under-19s, Hridoy was picked out as a 50-over gem and this may be the moment for the wristy middle-order dasher to take Bangladesh to their first ever World Cup final. Now 22, Hridoy began to enjoy T20 franchise success before being brought into the national side for the T20 series against England in March, guickly followed by the ODI series against Ireland. He has now chalked up five 50s in his 17 ODIs and, perhaps using a bat given to him by his mentor Mushfiqur Rahim, there may be more to come in India.

Expert view from Bangladesh assistant coach Nic Pothas: “He has a high ceiling in terms of his skills. He has a lot of potential and a desire to learn. I am excited for what he can do.”

India, Argentina sign Social Security Agreement

India, Argentina sign Social Security Agreement

Buenos Aires: India and Argentina on Friday signed a Social Security Agreement (SSA). The agreement was signed by India’s Ambassador to Argentina Dinesh Bhatia and Argentina’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship Santiago Cafiero in the presence of Argentine Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security Raquel Kismer de Olmos.

The SSA applies to legislation in India concerning old age, survivor’s pension and permanent, total disability pension for employed persons as well as to legislation in Argentina concerning contributory benefits of the Social Security System, as per a release issued by the Indian Embassy in Argentina.

The agreement provides detached workers, i.e., employees working in another country on a temporary basis, and their family members with rights to contributory benefits such as cash allowance for retirement or pension, rent, subsidy or lump sum payments as per local legislation without being subject to any reduction, modification, suspension, suppression or retention.

It establishes the legal framework regulating insurance period i.e., period of services credited with contributions, contributory benefits and export thereof, in respect of detached workers, including crew members of airlines and ships.

The economic and commercial ties between India and Argentina have grown exponentially in recent years.

Several Indian companies, including TCS, Infosys, Crisil, Bajaj Motorcycles, Royal Enfield, Hero Motors, TVS, Glenmark, and Godrej have investments in Argentina exceeding USD 1 billion.

Argentine companies including Globant and Techint also have large operations in India. The number of  Indian professionals working in Argentina for Indian as well as multinational companies under intra-company transfers for the short or long term is steadily rising.

There is also a growing number of Argentine nationals who are seeking employment in India. These growing people-to-people exchanges have necessitated a legal framework to protect their rights, especially those related to social security contributions, as per the official release.

The Indian Embassy in Argentina said the Social Security Agreement has been signed after detailed yet speedy negotiations, particularly expedited in 2022.

The agreement would protect the rights of professionals and workers against loss of benefits or contributions made towards social security in both countries and thus facilitate greater movement of professionals and the labour force. This is yet another step forward in building a Strategic Partnership between the two countries which share deep traditional bonds of friendship, as per the release.

FinMin notifies Oct 1 date for implementing amended GST law provisions for e-gaming-Telangana Today

Finance Ministry has notified October 1 as the date for implementation of the amended GST law provisions for taxing e-gaming

FinMin notifies Oct 1 date for implementing amended GST law provisions for e-gaming

New Delhi: The Finance Ministry has notified October 1 as the date for implementation of the amended GST law provisions for taxing e-gaming, casinos and horse racing.

According to the changes to the Central GST Act, these supplies will henceforth be treated as “actionable claims” similar to lottery, betting and gambling and subject to 28 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on full face value of bets.

The amendments to Integrated GST (IGST) Act makes it mandatory for offshore online gaming platforms to take registration in India and pay taxes in accordance with domestic law.

In its meetings in July and August, the GST Council, comprising finance ministers of Centre and states, had approved amendments to the law to include online gaming, casinos and horse racing as taxable actionable claims, and clarified that such supplies would attract 28 per cent tax on full bet value.

Parliament last month passed amendments to the Central GST and Integrated GST laws to give effect to the Council’s decision.

The Finance Ministry has now notified that October 1 will be the appointed date for implementation of these provisions.

The GST Council in its meeting in August had decided that the amended provision to classify these supplies as actionable claims and clarifying the taxation provisions would come into effect from October 1.

A review of the implementation was proposed to be carried out after six months, which is April 2024.

S Jaishankar Schools Canada On Vienna Convention As Ottawa Disregards It

S Jaishankar Schools Canada On Vienna Convention As Ottawa Disregards It

S Jaishankar spoke about threats being received by the Indian Embassy and Indian missions in Canada

Washington DC:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterated the stand that India is ready to look at any information or evidence shared by the Canadian side regarding its allegations about the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Mr Jaishankar also spoke about the threats being received by the Indian Embassy and Indian missions in Canada as well as violent threats to Indian diplomats, schooling Ottawa about the Vienna Convention.

“Right now there is such an environment where there is a kind of pressure on our Embassies, our High Commissioners and our Consulates. Violence is being propagated against them…How can they carry out the work of visa in such an environment?… This is a matter of law and order,” Mr Jaishankar highlighted.

Amid breaches of international treaties by Canada, Mr Jaishankar added, “Under the Vienna Convention, it is the responsibility of every country to provide security to its embassy and those working in the embassy. Don’t make it bilateral. This environment is not in India…Social media postings, protests and threats are happening in Canada. They (the Canadian government) should take action there.”

Mr Jaishankar however, stated that the doors for looking at something are not shut provided there must be something to be looked at.

His remarks comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, last week, alleged that the Indian government is involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India has outrightly rejected the claims, calling it ‘absurd’ and ‘motivated’.

When asked if the issue of Canadian allegations was raised during the meeting with Secretary of State Anonty Blinken and NSA Jake Sullivan, Mr Jaishankar said, “My understanding is that the word used by the Canadians is allegation…I have already answered it…We’ve always said that look if there is information let us know. I want to make one thing very clear. It’s not that our doors are shut to looking at something”.

“If there is a requirement for us to look at something, we are open to looking at it. But, I then expect somewhere, some pointer, something for me to look at,” he said during a press conference in Washington DC on Friday.

Notably, Canada has yet to provide any public evidence to support the claim about the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India has suspended its visa services in Canada, following Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s allegations of Indian involvement in the killing.

Amid strained ties, India has also issued an advisory for its citizens and those who are travelling to Canada to exercise “utmost caution in view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence” in the country.

India aiming for eighth SAFF U19 title against Pakistan in final showdown

India and Pakistan clashed in a SAFF final just once before, during the 2011 SAFF U16 Championship. At the Dashrath Stadium, Pakistan secured a 2-1 victory, marking their sole SAFF title to date.

India aiming for eighth SAFF U19 title against Pakistan in final showdown

Kathmandu: India is on the hunt for their eighth SAFF youth men’s title as the Blue Colts take on Pakistan in the SAFF U19 Championship Final at the Dashrath Stadium in Kathmandu on Saturday at 17:15 IST.

The final will be streamed live on the Sportzworkz YouTube Channel. Both teams showed great resolve to emerge victorious on penalties in their tantalizing semi-finals on Wednesday.
While India beat hosts Nepal 3-2 after a 1-1 draw at the end of 90 minutes, Pakistan played goalless against Bhutan before edging them 6-5 in the shoot-out to reach their third SAFF final in history, as per a press release from All India Football Federation (AIFF).

India and Pakistan have met only once in a SAFF final before. That was in the 2011 SAFF U16 Championship, where Pakistan ran out 2-1 winners at the very same Dashrath Stadium to clinch what is still their only SAFF title.

As far as the higher age groups are concerned, India will look to defend their title from last year which was held in the U20 format in Bhubaneswar. For Pakistan, this is their first-ever appearance in the tournament.
Seemingly excited before the big final, India head coach Shuvendu Panda expressed his expectations from the game in the pre-match press conference.

“I am quite sure this is going to be a very good match. Of course, I do not go into the history between India and Pakistan. We are just concentrating on the final. I know they are a very good side, very disciplined and tactically strong. People always enjoy an India-Pakistan match, and I hope they will tomorrow as well,” he said.

Panda’s counterpart Shadab Iftikhar said, “Any final is a special game. You do not know when the next final is going to come along so you should enjoy it. I do not think many expected Pakistan to be here. It’s an absolute honour to be part of this moment. Hopefully, this is just one of many.”

India had beaten Bangladesh (3-0) and Bhutan (2-1) to top Group B before their thrilling semi-final win over the hosts in front of a partisan crowd. Panda explained that he expected a different sort of contest than what panned out in the semi-final.

“Nepal is an aggressive side. They focus more on attacking. However, Pakistan are a defensive side that goes for counter-attacks. Every game is a different situation and we are ready to face the challenge. Being in the final is great motivation for the boys.”

Like India, Pakistan also topped their group with a 1-0 win over Nepal and a 1-1 draw with Maldives. Iftikhar’s boys, who were put under real test by Bhutan’s quick attack, have conceded only once in the tournament.

Sharing his thoughts on the opponents, India captain Ishaan Shishodia said, “While coming into the competition, we didn’t know much about how the teams play. But now, we have seen Pakistan’s three matches and we know about them. Our coach has given us all the information we need to get the win. We feel confident.”

For the large majority of the Indian squad, this SAFF U19 Championship is their first international tournament representing their nation, and September 30 is going to be the biggest day of their young careers. The first trophy is always special, no matter what level of competition.

“First of all, when we came here, our only goal was to lift the trophy. And finally, we are one step closer and the last obstacle is Pakistan. Everyone in the team is motivated. It’s a match we all will remember for the rest of our lives,” shared Shishodia.

Panda, who has guided this batch of players since 2021, placed every ounce of trust in each of his 23 Blue Colts, who will create history for themselves and the nation should they pass the final test. The day has finally arrived.

“Definitely, we are here to make history because we have been in this process for the last two years, working hard for this moment and this day. I have two hundred per cent faith in my players. We will give our best and do everything possible to try and bring the trophy home,” concluded Panda.

Indian-American Congressman launches Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain Caucus

Washington: In a bid to promote religious freedom and combat discrimination, Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar has launched the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain (HBSJ) American congressional caucus.

Thanedar, the founder and chair of the caucus, is joined by 27 other members of the US Congress, both from Republican and Democratic parties.

Stating that the HBSJ communities have made significant contributions to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of the US, Thanedar said on Friday that the launch of the caucus is a “statement of commitment”.

“A commitment to stand against religious discrimination, to propel the wheels of inclusion, and to cultivate a nation where diversity is not just tolerated but celebrated,” he said while addressing an event in Washington.

The group will address cultural misunderstandings and promote interfaith dialogue and harmony, in addition to supporting initiatives to promote well-being, education, and empowerment of the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jains in the US.

The caucus will also be looking at combating discrimination and promoting religious freedom for the HBSJ community and ensuring their accurate representation and inclusion of perspectives in policy discussions.

“This caucus will create a platform to have the discourse, engage in action, dispel the misinformation and disinformation of our culture and society, to express religious freedom, protect our existence, and speak the truth about who we are by pushing back on hate and bigotry,” Thanedar, who represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional district in the US House, said.

A US congressional caucus is a group of members of Congress that meet to pursue common legislative objectives.

After entering the ‘Samosa caucus’ of Indian-Americans in the US Congress in 2023, he had said that an “inclusive America is a stronger America”.

Ravindra Jadeja’s sister optimistic about his form for ODI World Cup

Rajkot: Ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup in India Ravindra Jadeja‘s sister Naynaba Jadeja said that the star Indian allrounder is in great form and hoped that he will display an excellent performance in the upcoming tournament.

While speaking to ANI, Naynaba hoped that the 34-year-old’s batting and bowling performance would be good in the forthcoming tournament.

“I hope that Ravindra Jadeja will play excellent cricket in this ODI World Cup. He is in great form. Starting Asia Cup to IPL, he has displayed an excellent all-round performance. I hope that his batting and bowling will be good in the upcoming tournament as well,” Nainaba Jadeja told ANI.

Nainaba added that her wish is to see Jadeja on the field no matter what role he serving in a match.

“My wish is to always see him on the field be it as a bowler or as a batsman, he should be visible on the field,” she added.

Jadeja’s sister also wished luck to other Indian players who are included in the ODI World Cup squad and said that the Men in Blue are in great form.

“The way Ravindra Jadeja has played cricket, there is a lot of hope that in the upcoming ODI World Cup, he will play his best cricket for India. I hope that India’s other batsmen and bowlers taking part in this World Cup will be able to perform in the tournament. Our batsmen are in great form and the bowlers are also doing their duty,” she added.

“Ravindra has proved to be a better batsman than before. He has shown his talent in batting and is working very hard. Be it ODI or Test cricket, an all-rounder always performs well. Whenever he gets a chance, whether he is batting at number 7 or number 8, he has tried to play his best for the team,” she concluded.

In the ODI format this year, Jadeja has picked up 15 wickets with a bowling average of 31.73. With the bat, the allrounder has scored 189 runs after playing 15 matches with an average of 27.00.

The upcoming ODI World Cup will start from October 5 and the first match will be between England and New Zealand. However, India will start their campaign against Australia on October 8 at MA Chidambaram in Chennai.
