S Jaishankar meets Lloyd Austin in US.

Washington:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has met US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and held a productive conversation with him on deepening bilateral defence cooperation, including in the co-production of defence articles, and exchanged perspectives on a variety of security issues.

He also met Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

After his meeting with Austin at the Pentagon on Friday, Mr Jaishankar posted on X, “Productive conversation on our bilateral defence cooperation. Useful exchange on global security challenges.”

“I was glad to host Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar at the Pentagon today to discuss US-India cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region,” Austin said.

The Pentagon said the two officials exchanged perspectives on a variety of security issues, including recent developments in East Asia and the Indian Ocean region.

“Austin and Jaishankar discussed opportunities to deepen bilateral defence cooperation, including expanded defence industrial cooperation and co-production of defence articles; streamlined logistics procedures to enhance operational cooperation; and continued implementation of the India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X),” said Pentagon’s Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh.

In the meeting with the Commerce Secretary, they appreciated the significant progress in technology collaboration and economic partnership this year.

“Agreed to enhance their momentum,” Mr Jaishankar said.

A day earlier, he had meetings with National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

He also interacted with the business community over luncheon on Thursday at the US India Strategic and Partnership Forum and the US India Business Council (USIBC) on Friday.

“A stimulating meeting today with the US defence industry at @USIBC. Discussed how strategic convergence, technology collaboration and easier-to-do business are coming together to transform our defence partnership,” Mr Jaishankar posted on X.

He also had a chance to meet members of the US Congress and think-tank representatives.

“This year, of course, I think, the big event is still in a sense the determining context is our prime minister’s visit (in June). A lot of what we’ve been doing since then has been to realise the various agreements and understandings that were reached,” Mr Jaishankar told Indian reporters at a meeting at the Indian Embassy here.

“A lot of our discussions were in stock-taking to assess the progress to see what is it we should be doing more or where is it that has not been the progress matching expectations. We hope now to take that entire process forward into the 2 2 meeting, which will take place a few weeks from now,” he said.

“We look forward to welcoming secretaries Blinken and Austin to India,” he added.

In a statement, USTR said that Tai and Mr Jaishankar took stock of recent developments and positive momentum in the US-India trade relationship following the resolution of seven long-standing disputes at the World Trade Organisation and India’s reduction of tariffs on certain US products.

“They also discussed their interest in working more constructively on the broader WTO agenda, including reforming the organisation to serve the needs of all people,” said the statement.

“Tai and Jaishankar shared views on India’s important role in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework as well as potential sectors for further collaboration on supply chain resilience, including critical minerals,” USTR said.

The two leaders agreed to remain in contact on these and other issues as the respective teams continue planning the next meeting of the US-India Trade Policy Forum, it said.

On Saturday, Mr Jaishankar is scheduled to have interaction with eminent Indian-Americans from across the country at the India House.

Indian Diplomat Stopped From Entering UK Gurdwara By Khalistani Extremists

Indian Diplomat Stopped From Entering UK Gurdwara By Khalistani Extremists

A pro-Khalistani activist was seen blocking Vikram Doraiswami’s car in the purported video.

New Delhi:

The Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, was stopped from entering a gurdwara in Scotland by Khalistani extremists. The incident comes amid a row over Canada accusing India of involvement in the killing of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

According to a purported video going viral on social media, a pro-Khalistan activist was seen blocking Mr Doraiswami from entering the Glasgow Gurdwara on Albert Drive.

The video shows two men near the High Commissioner’s car in the parking area. One of them is seen attempting to open the car door, which has been locked from the inside. The high commissioner’s car then leaves the gurdwara premises.

Indian High Commissioner was invited by the gurdwara managing committee. A longer version of purported video shows the Khalistani extremists threatening the gurudwara managing committee staff as well.

There is no immediate reaction from the Indian government. As it is related to the security of the high commissioner, sources say that a police complaint has been filed.

A row erupted after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s alleged that “Indian government agents” were involved in killing of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing. India rejected Trudeau’s charges as “absurd”.

Trudeau has offered no evidence to support his allegation against India, but reports said this was a shared information among an intelligence alliance also including US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Rejecting the charge, India has accused Canada of providing safe haven to terrorists.

Tensions had been brewing between the two countries since Prime Minister Narendra Modi scolded Trudeau over rising secessionist activities in Canada, during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of G20 summit in Delhi. In 2018, India had reportedly handed him a list of nine Khalistani operatives.

Governor Hochul declares state of emergency amid New York storms

Governor Hochul declares state of emergency amid New York storms

New York: New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency across New York City, Long Island, and surrounding area after torrential storms flooded subways and streets and delayed flights.

Ophelia’s remnants soaked New York City with heavy rain early Friday, and caused flash flooding in parts of the city, Xinhua news agency reported.

A flood watch is in effect through 6 a.m. Saturday for the entire tri-state – New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, with rainfall rates of one to two inches per hour expected at times.

Strong storms have shut down swaths of the Big Apple’s subway system, flooded some streets and highways, and cut off access to at least one terminal at the LaGuardia Airport.

A number of subway lines were suspended Friday morning with other lines suspending service through flooded stations, especially in Brooklyn.

“There is only extremely limited subway service available because of heavy flooding. Service is suspended at many stations,” the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)’s subway account posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Hochul’s announcement on Friday was followed by a similar order from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who asked residents to shelter in place during the worst of the storm.

“I want to say to all New Yorkers, this is time for heightened alertness and extreme caution. If you are home, stay home. If you are at work or school, shelter in place for now,” Adams said.

Parts of New York City saw five inches of rain as of 11 a.m. Friday. In Central Park, it was the most rainfall seen since the remnants of Ida swept through two years ago.

Video footage showed cars stuck in the flooded streets at the Red Hook neighbourhood in the Brooklyn borough. Some people were working to clear a drain in flood water.

A game set for Friday night between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets was postponed due to severe weather.

Adams called the weather “dangerous” and said it’s not over.

“We could possibly see eight inches of rain before the day is over,” he said.

Electoral bonds are ‘legalised bribery’, says Chidambaram

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday described electoral bonds as “legalised bribery”

Electoral bonds are ‘legalised bribery’, says Chidambaram

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday described electoral bonds as “legalised bribery” and claimed that, as their fresh tranche opens on October 4, it will be a “golden harvest” for the BJP.

The government on Friday approved the issuance of the 28th tranche of electoral bonds that will open for sale for 10 days beginning October 4.

The decision comes ahead of assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram. The poll dates in these states are likely to be announced soon.

In a post on X, Chidambaram noted that the 28th tranche of the electoral bonds will open on October 4 and said, “It will be a golden harvest for the BJP. Going by the past records, 90 per cent of the so-called anonymous donations will go to the BJP.” “The crony capitalists will open their cheque books to write out their ‘tribute’ to the lord and master in Delhi,” the former Union minister said.

Electoral bonds are “legalised bribery”, Chidambaram added.

Electoral bonds have been pitched as an alternative to cash donations made to political parties as part of efforts to bring transparency to political funding.

The sale of the first batch of electoral bonds took place in March 2018. The State Bank of India (SBI) is the only bank authorised to issue electoral bonds.

Electoral bonds can be purchased by Indian citizens or entities incorporated or established in the country.

Registered political parties that have secured not less than 1 per cent of the votes polled in the last Lok Sabha or legislative assembly elections are eligible to receive funding through electoral bonds.

The Congress had alleged on Tuesday that the electoral bonds scheme is one of the most “diabolical acts” of the Narendra Modi government as it undermines the electoral system and democracy in the country.

E. Brian Dobbins to produce film on OceanGate’s Titan Submersible

Deadline reports that Dobbins will co-produce the fictional project, with the screenplay crafted by MindRiot’s Justin MacGregor and Jonathan Keasey.

E. Brian Dobbins to produce film on OceanGate’s Titan Submersible

Los Angeles: A feature film based on the tragic story behind OceanGate’s Titan submersible is being developed by “Blackening” producer E Brian Dobbins and MindRiot Entertainment.

According to entertainment news outlet Deadline, Dobbins will serve as a co-producer on the fiction project, which will be penned by MindRiot’s Justin MacGregor and Jonathan Keasey.

The Titan submersible went missing during a deep sea underwater excursion near the wreckage of the Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean in June 2023.

The submersible lost contact with its mother ship 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive, and four days later, a remotely operated underwater vehicle discovered debris near the Titanic wreck, and the Titan submersible was believed to have imploded.

All five of the crew members aboard the Titan died; they were British businessman Hamish Harding; British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman; former French Navy diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet; and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.

“The Titan Tragedy is yet another example of a misinformed and quick-to-pounce system, in this case, our nonstop, 24-7 media cycle that convicts and ruins the lives of so many people without any due process.

“Our film will not only honour all those involved in the submersible tragedy, and their families, but the feature will serve as a vessel that also addresses a more macro concern about the nature of media today,” said Keasey.

The project is part of MindRiot’s upcoming slate of docu-series, including one based around Seattle’s underground rap scene.
