Opposition Bloc INDIA Pushes For Caste Census In First Tactical Meeting

This is the first meeting of the INDIA alliance’s coordination committee.

The INDIA opposition alliance has “agreed to take up the issue of caste census”, Congress leader KC Venugopal said Wednesday evening after the bloc’s coordination committee met in Delhi. The group, banded together to present a united opposition front ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha election, will also “start process for determining seat-sharing”, he said.

Only 12 of the 14  parties named to the bloc’s highest decision-making body were present today. The biggest absentee was the Trinamool Congress, whose nominee – Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee was “conveniently” summoned today by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with its inquiry into alleged irregularities in appointments to government schools.

Mr Banerjee’s absence was significant because his party had refused to support the bloc’s intention to push the government to conduct a caste census; Trinamool boss and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had opposed adding this demand to a joint political resolution, sources told NDTV.

Sans the Trinamool’s presence, INDIA decided to push for a caste census call now and speak to the party later – a decision that will almost certainly not go down well with Ms Banerjee.

“The parties present in the meeting agreed to take up the issue of Caste Census,” INDIA said, while also slamming Mr Banerjee’s absence as “vendetta politics”.

“Abhishek Banerjee… could not attend the meeting due to a summons by the Enforcement Directorate, arising out of the vendetta politics of the Bharatiya Janata Party.”

On Caste Census

After the July meeting INDIA passed a resolution called for such a census; all parties flagged “hatred and violence against minorities” and called for a “fair hearing for all socially, educationally and economically backward communities… as a first step, implement the caste census”.

A caste-based survey is being conducted by the Bihar government led by the Janata Dal (United) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, both of whom are INDIA members. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has called it a move that will help the disadvantaged, and it was upheld by the Patna High Court last month.

The viability of a caste census is now being argued before the Supreme Court.

On INDIA Seat-Sharing

“The coordination committee decided to start the process for determining seat-sharing. It was decided that the member parties will hold talks and decide at the earliest,” the bloc said.

INDIA contested its first elections last week – seven bypolls across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Kerala, Bengal and Jharkhand. Eyebrows were raised after it was revealed that the bloc would fight each other in three of these seats – in Kerala, Bengal and Uttarakhand.

Overall, the bloc sneaked a 4-3 win over the BJP but questions over the levels of unity within refused to go away, and could be heightened by backing a caste census despite a member party’s objection.

After its Mumbai meet, INDIA had said it does plan to contest future elections together but added an immediate caveat, saying it would be “… as far as possible”.

Media Blackout?

Meanwhile, the opposition group has also formed a sub-committee to select news organisations to boycott; “… sub-group on Media to decide upon the names of the anchors on whose shows none of the INDIA parties will send their representatives,” their statement said.

Rescue workers in Libya retrieve bodies after catastrophic floods

More than 5,300 bodies have been counted in the Libyan city of Derna and the toll is expected to increase significantly and may even double, a minister in the regional administration said on Wednesday, after the city was hit by catastrophic floods.

The floods were caused by a huge Mediterranean storm that burst dams, swept away buildings and wiped out as much as a quarter of the eastern coastal city.

Video footage showed Libyan Red Crescent volunteers carrying bodies from rubble piles, through bushes, and across streams.

Photographs showed the devastating aftermath in Derna, with buildings reduced to rubble, and volunteers trying to push trucks that got stuck in the mud.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya said on Wednesday in a tweet that at least 30,000 individuals were displaced in Derna.

Naseem’s unavailability will hurt Pakistan badly ahead of their must-win clash against Sri Lanka on Thursday. Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in a virtual semifinal on Thursday, with the winner progressing to Sunday’s final against India. The Pakistan Cricket Board named 22-year-old Zaman Khan, who is yet to make his ODI debut, as Naseem’s replacement in the 17-member squad, while also calling up fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani.

“Right-arm fast bowler Zaman Khan has replaced Naseem Shah in Pakistan’s 17-player squad for the ongoing men’s ODI Asia Cup 2023,” the PCB said in a statement.

Naseem suffered the injury during the game against India, and left the field after bowling 9.2 overs without any wicket.

“Naseem injured his right shoulder during the match against India. He continues to be monitored by the team’s medical panel that is taking all necessary precautions keeping in mind the ICC men’s Cricket World Cup 2023,” the PCB said.

India piled up their joint-highest ODI total of 356 for two against Pakistan, who also missed the services of Haris Rauf due to side strain. He did not bowl when the game was completed on the reserve day on Tuesday. “Haris Rauf, who did not bowl on the reserve day of Pakistan vs India contest as a precautionary measure, continues to recover well after he felt discomfort in his right flank on the first day of the match,” the PCB updated.

“These two fast bowlers are our assets and the team’s medical panel will provide them the best possible care ahead of the all-important World Cup.”

These Are The Most In-Demand Positions In India, As Per Jobs Report

These Are The Most In-Demand Positions In India, As Per Jobs Report

Domestic non-IT firms report highest jump in job openings. (Representational Pic)

India has seen highest increase in data science and analytics jobs in non-IT sector, with banking, financial service and insurance (BFSI) recording one-third of these job openings, according to a report released by Great Learning, an online learning platform. The document further said that the growth has been driven by new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and big data analytics. These technologies have given a boost to operations like risk management, fraud detection and customer service.

Business analyst remains the most in-demand position this year by volume.

The 2023 Jobs Report said share of information technology sector in data science and analytics jobs has seen a significant decline since last year. Great Learning attributed this fall to global recessionary trends, especially in the US and Europe, where a lot of IT sector clients are located.

Domestic non-IT firms report highest jump in job openings compared to 2022.

The report also said that jobs in retail and consumer packaged goods (CPGs), and pharma and healthcare sectors have gone up.

The jobs report painted a grim picture for senior-level professionals, saying there is a decline in job openings for them.

“The number of data science & analytics jobs was primarily skewed towards professionals in the 2-5 years and 5-7 years experience bracket. These two categories have even historically favoured because of their adaptability and lower cost to organisations compared to more senior age groups,” said the report.

It also noted that “professionals in these brackets have relevant skills and practical experience, giving them an edge over freshers”.

Though the number of data jobs have dropped, Bengaluru continues to hold the largest share, but the country’s tech capital is reaching a saturation point. According to the jobs report, companies are moving to other locations, such as Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad and Chennai.

“India is in the midst of a massive digital transformation supporting business operations globally, and there is a considerable push towards embracing data-driven decisions to achieve more efficient business operations. This year’s report has sprung some surprises – but once economies rebound, we can expect data science and analytics jobs in India to grow further and open up more unique job profiles,” said Great Learning co-founder Hari Krishnan Nair.

IAEA governors unlikely to issue anti-Iran resolution: Iran nuclear chief

Iran’s nuclear chief has said that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors is unlikely to issue another resolution against the Islamic Republic.

Speaking on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday, Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said the IAEA Board of Governors meeting in Vienna on September 11-15 may see political moves against Iran but the agency will not adopt any anti-Iran resolutions.

“Any political move may be made by any group at any moment,” he told reporters, adding, however, “the current trend does not indicate a push towards a resolution or actions, which would coerce Iran into taking strong and decisive legal reactions.”

The remarks came after the European Union claimed that Iran has not taken necessary steps to return to its commitments under the 2015 US-abandoned nuclear agreement and that no progress has been made in implementing the March joint statement between Tehran and the IAEA.

Eslami said that it is not possible for the European countries to renege on their own obligations under the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but expect Iran to fully honor its commitments.

“Our measures are in line with the Strategic Action Plan to Counter Sanctions,” he asserted, referring to the law, which was approved by the Iranian parliament in December 2020 in a bid to counter illegal sanctions imposed on Iran by the United States and its Western allies after US unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018.

The legislation required the Iranian administration to restrict the IAEA inspections and accelerate the development of the country’s nuclear program beyond the limits set under the JCPOA.

Eslami said, “As long as they (the Europeans) fail to fulfill their obligations and sanctions are not completely removed, it is natural that we will continue the same trend, something that is also evident in the agency’s report.”

He also noted that Iran has been cooperating with the IAEA “patiently” and “transparently” in the face of the enemies that have fabricated a case against Iran and leveled accusations at the country.

Iran and the IAEA are in a dispute triggered by the agency’s Israeli-influenced accusations, which were leveled against Tehran’s peaceful nuclear activities. The IAEA insisted on investigating what it claims to be “uranium traces” found at “undeclared nuclear sites” in Iran.

“The four issues related to the safeguards agreement have been reduced to two. We are still holding talks (with the IAEA). Necessary clarifications have been made and we have submitted many documents to the agency,” he emphasized.

According to a report in late May, during technical negotiations between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog, the case of one of the alleged “undetected” sites raised by the agency (known as Abadeh) has been closed.

This brings the number of cases concerning the alleged “undetected” sites claimed by the IAEA to two, the report said, adding that IAEA’s claims about uranium particles with 83.7 purity found at the undeclared nuclear sites in Iran have also been settled.
