Did Sri Lanka Reveal Key Weakness In Virat Kohli's Game? Stats Show This

Virat Kohli was unable to score big during India’s Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday and his dismissal once again exposed a worrying trend when it comes to the star batter facing left-arm orthodox spinners. Kohli could manage to score just 3 runs before getting foxed by Dunith Wellalage as the ball stopped on its way to the bat and he could only manage to mistime it straight to Dasun Shanaka. Wellalage dismissing Kohli was just another reminder of his rough patch against the left-arm orthodox in the ODI format since 2021. After facing 159 deliveries, the Indian batter has scored 104 runs at an average of 13 and a strike rate of 65.4.

The shot to which he fell on Tuesday was reminiscent of his manner of dismissals on previous eight occasions to left-arm spin.

Kohli, however, wasn’t Wellalage’s sole victim of the night. The 20-year-old spinner secured his maiden 5-wicket haul, single-handedly dismantling a formidable Indian batting lineup and bagging the prized wickets of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya.

He provided Sri Lanka with much-needed breakthroughs, dismissing Shubman Gill for 19. Gill got completely bamboozled by the spin as the ball rattled his off-stump. After picking up Kohli’s wicket, Wellalage struck thrice more.

Skipper Rohit was bamboozled by a ripper from the left-armer and ended up getting clean-bowled for 53.

He bagged his fourth wicket of the match after removing KL Rahul and brought up his maiden five-wicket haul after scalping all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

"Sea Dumping Bodies": Libya Minister Says Flood Death Count May Double

'Sea Dumping Bodies': Libya Minister Says Flood Death Count May Double

Bodies were washing ashore in eastern Libya on Wednesday.

Libya:

Bodies were washing ashore in eastern Libya on Wednesday, swelling the death count from a storm that swept whole neighbourhoods out to sea, with thousands already confirmed dead and many thousands more still missing.

Swathes of the Mediterranean city of Derna were obliterated by the flood torrent, unleashed after rains from a powerful storm burst dams above the city on Sunday night. Whole multi-storey buildings were swept away with sleeping families inside.

The “sea is constantly dumping dozens of bodies”, Hichem Abu Chkiouat, minister of civil aviation in the administration that runs eastern Libya, told Reuters by phone.

“We have counted more than 5,300 dead so far, and the number is likely to increase significantly and may even double because the number of missing people is also thousands,” he added.

Tens of thousands of people had been made homeless, he said, appealing for international aid and adding that Libya did not have the experience to deal with the aftermath of such a disaster.

Officials say at least 10,000 people are feared missing or dead, though tolls of dead confirmed so far vary. Tariq Kharaz, a spokesperson for the eastern authorities, said 3,200 bodies had been recovered, and 1,100 of them had yet to be identified.

At a hospital in Derna on Tuesday, scores of bodies wrapped in blankets were laid out on the floor in corridors or outside on the pavement, for residents to try to identify them.

Mustafa Salem said no one had been found alive from his entire extended family which lived in homes close together near the river valley, opposite a mosque.

“People were asleep and no one was ready,” he told Reuters. “We lost 30 people so far, 30 members of the same family. We haven’t found anyone.”

The UN migration agency, the International Organization for Migration, said at least 30,000 people had been displaced in Derna.

“The most important thing for the search teams is that we need bags for the bodies,” Lutfi al-Misrati, the director of the search team, told Al Jazeera in a phone interview.

The devastation was clear from high points above Derna, where the densely populated city centre, built along a seasonal riverbed, was now a wide, flat crescent of earth with stretches of muddy water gleaming in the sun, all its building swept away.

While Reuters was on the road trying to return to the city on Wednesday, aid convoys and trucks carrying bulldozers could be seen heading in.

Satellite photographs of the city from before and after the disaster showed that what had been a narrow waterway through the city centre was now a wide scar, with all the buildings that had run along it gone. Buildings had also been swept away in other parts of the city.

Rescue operations are complicated by deep political fractures in the country of 7 million people that has lacked a strong central government and been at war on-and-off since a NATO-backed uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

An internationally recognised Government of National Unity (GNU) is based in Tripoli, in the west, while a parallel administration operates in the east, including Derna.

Libya’s Tripoli-based Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah called the floods an unprecedented catastrophe. Libya’s Presidential Council head Mohammed al-Menfi has called for national unity.

The bodies of dozens of Egyptian migrants who were among the victims of the storm in Libya arrived on Wednesday in Beni Suef, about 110km (68 miles) south of Cairo, Egyptian media reported.

Governments including Egypt, Qatar and Turkey have rushed aid to Libya. The Italian defence ministry said it was sending two military planes, carrying firefighters and other emergency rescue personnel, and a navy ship.

The United Arab Emirates has sent two aid planes carrying 150 tonnes of urgent food, relief and medical supplies to eastern Libya, the UAE’s state news agency WAM reported.

According to the Gregorian calendar, the date falls in the months of August or September.

When will Ganesh Chaturthi be celebrated this year?

There is some confusion about the date of the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi, like Janmashtami and Raksha Bandhan. This year, the 10-day-long festival will begin on September 19 and continue till September 28.

As per the Hindu calendar, Vinayak Chaturthi will begin on Monday (September 18) at 12.39pm and end at 8.43 pm on Tuesday (September 19).

Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi holds immense spiritual and cultural significance. Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is believed to bless his devotees with wisdom, success, and good fortune. Green Tribunal Ban On Motorboats In Lakes Of Madhya Pradesh

Green Tribunal Ban On Motorboats In Lakes Of Madhya Pradesh

The Upper Lake is an important source of drinking water for Bhopal.

BHopal:

The National Green Tribunal has ordered that cruise boats and other motor propelled boats stop operating in the Upper lake in Bhopal. The order came after environmentalist Subhash Pandey approached the tribunal, highlighting that a cruise vessel has been permitted in the “Bhoj wetland” by the Madhya Pradesh government.

The wetland is also a Ramsar site with international importance and has two lakes — Upper lake, also called Bhojtal (Bada Talaab) and Lower Lake or Chhota Talaab.

Spread over about 31 km, the Upper Lake is an important source of drinking  water for the city. About 12 lakh people of Bhopal are dependent on this water body.

Upper Lake also has a great importance when it comes to local climate, vegetation, ground water depletion and ground water contamination of the surrounding area.

It has more than 15 kinds of fishes and several vulnerable species including turtles, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates.

More than 2,500 migratory birds from across the world used to come regularly to this wetland for breeding and dispersal of seeds, leading to maintenance of biodiversity along their routes.

The tribunal said no permanent construction will be allowed within the “Zone of Influence” of water bodies/wetlands and if any permanent construction has been raised, it be demolished.

Dr Subhash C Pandey, an environmentalist, had alleged serious damage and deterioration at the “Bhoj Wetland” and other water bodies due to operation of motorised boats and cruise boats.
He also said small cruise vessels with passengers act as floating colonies that pollute water bodies with sewage, waste water and other contaminants. A mid-sized cruise vessel can consume 150 tonnes of fuel each day and dump toxic waste in water.

In the Bhopal Master Plan, 2005, it was said that no recreational activities should be permitted in the water of Upper Lake since it is fundamentally used for drinking. Recreational activities may adversely affect the quality of water.

Even so, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has started organising cruises in rivers, lakes and water bodies, which mainly comprise river Narmada and its tributaries.

Lankan Presidemt Asked Mamata Banerjee If She Would Lead INDIA. Her Reply

Lankan Presidemt Asked Mamata Banerjee If She Would Lead INDIA. Her Reply

Kolkata:

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — on way to Spain to seek investment — had an impromptu meeting with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Dubai airport. The conversation between the two leaders, apparently, was all politics and on the occasion, the President asked a crucial question that’s uppermost in the minds of many.

“Can I ask you a question,” Mr Wickremesinghe is heard saying in a short clip that was circulated online. On Ms Banerjee’s acquiescence, he said, “Will you lead the Opposition alliance? We all are wondering”.

“Oh my goodness,” the Bengal Chief Minister said, completely taken aback. Then laughing, she added, “It depends on the will of the people, you know… If people support us, we can be in position (power) tomorrow.”

The Opposition Front INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) is currently being run by collectin=ve leadership and who it will finally choose as the face to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi has intrigued many.

The Front leaders have maintained silence, remarking that there are many who are eligible and a call can be taken when the time comes.

The leadership question has earlier proved divisive for most opposition fronts, with many leaders not seeing eye to eye with the Congress, the largest national party in the grouping.

This time, the Congress has been careful to keep to the background, ceding the pole position to other leaders including Ms Banerjee, her Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar and Maharashtra’s Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray.

Sources said  Mr Wickremesinghe also gifted a painting to Mamata Banerjee.

Government allocates Rs 1,650 cr for 75 lakh additional LPG connections under Ujjwala

Government allocates Rs 1,650 cr for 75 lakh additional LPG connections under Ujjwala

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday allocated Rs 1,650 crore towards the release of an additional 75 lakh free LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) over three years ending March 2026.

As per the existing modalities of Ujjawala 2.0, the first refill and stove will also be provided free of cost to Ujjwala beneficiaries, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told reporters after the meeting of the Union Cabinet.

He said Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the extension of PMUY for the release of 75 lakh LPG connections over three years from Financial Year 2023-24 to 2025-26.

The total financial implication will be Rs 1,650 crore.

A targeted subsidy of Rs 200 per 14.2 kg LPG cylinder for up to 12 refills per year is being provided to PMUY consumers.

With the release of an additional 75 lakh connections, the number of PMUY beneficiaries will go up to 10.35 crore.

The total financial implication will be Rs 1,650 crore. This includes Rs 2,200 per connection (14.2 kg single bottle connection/ 5 kg double bottle connection), and Rs 1,300 per connection (5 kg single bottle connection).

An official release on the Cabinet decision said some eligible households still do not have LPG connections.

This is due to multiple reasons – new households are formed every year as a result of rising population, marriages, migration, nuclearisation of families, leftover households, extremely remote locations etc.

There is demand for 15 lakh PMUY connections as of August 31, 2023.

Last month, the government on Tuesday announced a Rs 200 per cylinder cut in prices of domestic cooking gas to soften the impact of rising inflation on households.

A 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in the national capital cost Rs 903.

For Ujjwala beneficiaries, the price of an LPG cylinder is Rs 703 after considering the continuing Rs 200 per cylinder subsidy.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched by the Prime Minister in May 2016 to provide LPG connections to women of below poverty line (BPL) families.

PMUY has majorly contributed to increase in LPG penetration in the country from 62 per cent in 2016 to near saturation now, the release said.

North Korea fires two ballistic missiles as Kim visits Russia

North Korea has reportedly fired two short-range ballistic missiles as the country’s leader Kim Jong-un visits Russia to have a meeting with his Russian counterpart.

The South Korean military said on Wednesday its radars had detected “two short-range ballistic missiles fired by North Korea from the Sunan area towards the East Sea at around 11:43 to 11:53 today”, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.

“Our military has strengthened surveillance and vigilance in preparation for further launches while maintaining full readiness by closely cooperating with the US,” the military added.

The Japanese coast guard also confirmed that two ballistic missiles were launched.

Japan’s top government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters that the missiles “appear to have fallen outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone but we are analyzing details”.

Kim is in Russia with his top military officials and is set to meet President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday for talks focused on defense cooperation.

According to media reports, Russia is aiming to purchase artillery shells from North Korea, while Pyongyang is looking for help in upgrading its Soviet-era military equipment, especially for its air force and navy.

“Fascinating: a launch without Kim Jong (-un) in the country. A first,” US-based analyst Ankit Panda wrote on X.

“Starting in 2019, KJU stopped attending every single publicized launch (and sometimes his presence was deliberately obscured),” Pandit wrote. “There’s precedent for launches without Kim, but not without Kim in-country.”

North Korea has conducted a string of weapons tests so far this year, the last one involving two short-range ballistic missiles last month.

Also last month, North Korea failed to launch a space satellite into orbit in its second attempt.

South Korea and the United States have continued bolstering military cooperation, staging joint exercises as well as naval drills with Japan off the Korean peninsula.

Pyongyang views the joint military drills as a rehearsal for invasion, maintaining a strong military as a deterrence force.

Current relations between Pyongyang and Seoul are at their lowest point in years, and diplomacy is stalled after failed attempts to discuss the North’s denuclearization.

Gill Breathing Down Babar's Neck, Hits Career High ODI Ranking

India opener Shubman Gill jumped to second position, among batsmen, in the latest ICC ODI Players’ Rankings on the weight of his performances in the ongoing Asia Cup. India are yet to taste defeat in the Asia Cup and much of their success has to do with handsome contributions from batsmen, especially the top order comprising skipper Rohit Sharma, Gill and talisman Virat Kohli. Gill isn’t the only Indian on the move up the rankings for batsmen, with Kohli rising two places to eighth and Rohit jumping two spots to ninth in the latest standings.

For the first time in more than four and half years, three Indians feature inside the Top 10 of the latest rankings for batsmen.

Gill already has two half-centuries in the tournament, aggregating 154 runs.

His handsome returns in the ongoing tournament has taken him to a career-best second place in the rankings for batsmen. He trails Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who sits top of the pile currently.

According to the ICC standings, Gill has closed the gap with Babar considerably, with the margin now narrowing down to just 103 rating points.

The Pakistan captain tops the batting charts with 863 rating points while Gill currently sits second with 759 points.

One has to go back to the beginning of 2019 to trace the last time India had three players inside the Top-10 rankings for batsmen.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan featured in the Top-10 then alongside Rohit and Kohli in January =, 2019.

Pakistan, which currently occupies the joint top spot in ODI rankings with Australia, have three of their players in the Top-10 of the batting charts.

However, Imam-ul-Haq has dropped one place to fifth and fellow opener Fakhar Zaman has slipped three spots to be on 10th.

Currently in the form of his life, India spinner Kuldeep Yadav has climbed the bowling charts to be in the 7th spot, on the back of his nine wickets in the Asia Cup.

Star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has also moved up four places to sixth in the standings for all-rounders.

Will Apple's Switch To USB Type-C Impact It Financially? Explained

Will Apple's Switch To USB Type-C Impact It Financially? Explained

Apple unveiled iPhone 15 range with USB Type-C ports.

Apple made a major switch in its latest gadgets, including the iPhone that accounts for more than 80 per cent of the smartphone industry’s profits. It is one of the most-talked-about thing in the tech world, since Apple earns a substantial revenue from the accessories that third party vendors make for its products. So, how does this change impact the revenue of Apple, one of the most profitable companies in the world.

How Apple earns through Lightning port?

Apple introduced Lightning port in 2012, with the launch of iPhone 5. It was a huge improvement compared to micro-USB interface, which was mainstream that time.

When accessory makers build peripherals and cables for iPhones, they need to apply for Apple’s Made for iPhone (MIF) for certification. That certification is mandatory for an accessory to be sold through Apple’s official retail channels.

Since the introduction of Lightning port more than a decade ago, Apple has earned tens of millions of dollars per quarter, according to a Bloomberg report.

Apple’s official financial data has revealed that its revenue from wearable devices, home products and accessories has grown from $30.6 billion to $41.2 billion in the last three years.

“During the application process, the product design needs to be modified repeatedly until all the parameters are up to Apple’s standards, which can take three to five months,” The National Business Daily said in a report.

Then there are the fees that companies have to pay to Apple. In addition to Apple’s $99 annual membership fee, manufacturers who apply for MFi certification also pay $2,060 per factory audit, according to the Science and Innovation Board Daily.

Additionally, Apple earns from the chip that’s added to the Lightning cables.

Will switch to Type-C hurt Apple’s revenue?

There are speculations that Apple’s cash inflow will be affected after ditching to Lightning port. But some reports say the company may develop a certification chip specifically for the USB-C interface, which will be used in this year’s iPhone 15 series phones and related MFI accessories.

So, it might be possible that the existing Type-C cables may not be recognised by the new iPhones, or is not able to fast-charge it.

Russia Will Win Against 'Evil' In Ukraine, Says Kim Jong Un

Kim Jong Un said he was confident Russia would win in Ukraine.

Vladivostok, Russia:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday via a translator that he was sure that the Russian army and people would triumph against “evil”, in what he cast as the West’s imperialism in the war in Ukraine.

Before proposing a toast to President Putin’s health, the victory of “great Russia”, Korean-Russian friendship and the health of all those present, Kim said he was confident Russia would win in what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

“I am deeply convinced that the heroic Russian army and people will brilliantly inherit the tradition of victory, confidently demonstrate invaluable dignity and honour on the fronts of the special military operation,” Kim Jong Un said via a translator before raising a glass of wine.

“The Russian army and people will certainly win a great victory in the sacred struggle for the punishment of a great evil that claims hegemony and feeds an expansionist illusion,” the North Korean leader added.

Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un were offered a menu including duck and fig salad, crab dumplings, sturgeon and beef with a choice of Russian wines, according to Kremlin reporters.

Western intelligence agencies suspect that Russia is looking to acquire North Korean weapons and ammunition to use in its military campaign in Ukraine, something both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied.
