"After The India Match, We Were…": Pakistan Coach On Team Morale

Pakistan bowling coach Morne Morkel feels that Pakistan spinners will make a comeback against Sri Lanka after a disappointing overall display in the Asia Cup. Pakistan are up against the reigning Asia Cup champions who are still well-placed to defend their title if they can return to winning ways. By virtue of a superior net run rate to Pakistan, Sri Lanka are well placed to reach this year’s final and can earn a place in the decider by not tasting defeat in their final Super Four match against Babar Azam’s side on Thursday.

A win will have them qualify with ease, while a tie or no result will also see them progress as there is no reserve day scheduled for the final two Super Four matches.

Sri Lanka’s match against India was a reflection of how well the pitch will work in favour of the spinners. Pakistan’s pacers have dominated the entire Asia Cup but Morkel feels that Pakistan’s spinners are up for the task that lies ahead.

“The conditions are spin-friendly and I think our spinners are working really hard at the moment. They will be the first to put up their hands when it is needed. They are all match-winners and experienced players. They know how to make comebacks,” Morkel said in the pre-match conference.

He also reflected on the absence of their star pace bowler Naseem Shah in a must-win clash against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup, but feels it is an opportunity for the replacing players to step up and show character.

Earlier in the day, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ruled out Naseem from the entire Asia Cup due to a shoulder injury that he sustained on the reserve day of their clash against India. Young right-arm fast Zaman Khan has stepped up to fill his shoes.

“Obviously, it is a big blow (absence of Naseem). It is unfortunate that he picked some little niggles. But what a fantastic opportunity for the guys you know coming in. After going down against India, it’s a must-win game for us tomorrow. I’m quite excited to see new guys stepping in and showing some character,” Morkel said.

The former South African pacer went on to talk about how important it is for bowlers to reflect on their performance after and the way this defeat will prepare them for the World Cup.

“After the India match, we were bitterly disappointed. For me, it is very important for the bowlers to do a bit of self-reflection, ask yourself the hard questions where did you go wrong? Yes, credit must also go to the Indian batters. They put us under pressure early. Those are fantastic lessons for us before the World Cup. We are gonna grow from this and come back stronger,” Morkel signed off saying.

Mexico Discusses Aliens After Lawmaker Presents 'Extra-Terrestrial' Bodies

Mexico Discusses Aliens After Lawmaker Presents 'Extra-Terrestrial' Bodies

Remains of an allegedly ‘non-human’ being on display in the Mexico parliament.

Mexico City:

Mexican lawmakers heard testimony that “we are not alone” in the universe and saw the alleged remains of non-human beings in an extraordinary hearing marking the Latin American country’s first congressional event on UFOs.

In the hearing on Tuesday on FANI, the Spanish acronym for what are usually now termed Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), politicians were shown two artifacts that Mexican journalist and long-time UFO enthusiast Jaime Maussan claimed were the corpses of extraterrestrials.

The specimens were not related to any life on Earth, Maussan said.

The two tiny “bodies,” displayed in cases, have three fingers on each hand and elongated heads. Maussan said they were recovered in Peru near the ancient Nazca Lines in 2017. He said that they were about 1,000 years old, analyzed through a carbon dating process by Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM).

Similar such finds in the past have turned out to be the remains of mummified children.

Maussan said it was the first time such evidence had been presented.

“I think there is a clear demonstration that we are dealing with non-human specimens that are not related to any other species in our world and that all possibilities are open for any scientific institution… to investigate it,” Maussan said.

“We are not alone,” he added.

Jose de Jesus Zalce Benitez, Director of the Scientific Institute for Health of the Mexican navy, said X-rays, 3-D reconstruction and DNA analysis had been carried out on the remains.

“I can affirm that these bodies have no relation to human beings,” he said.

UNAM on Thursday republished a statement first issued in 2017, saying the work by its National Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry with Accelerators (LEMA) was only intended to determine the age of the samples.

“In no case do we make conclusions about the origin of said samples,” the statement said.

Lawmakers also heard from former U.S. Navy pilot Ryan Graves, who has participated in U.S. Congressional hearings about his personal experience with UAP and the stigma around reporting such sightings.

Congressman Sergio Gutierrez, from President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s ruling Morena party, said he hoped the hearing would be the first of other similar events in Mexico.

“We are left with reflections, with concerns and with the path to continue talking about this,” Gutierrez said.

In recent years, the U.S. government has done an about-face on public information on UAP after decades of stonewalling and deflecting. The Pentagon has been actively investigating reported sightings in recent years by military aviators, while an independent NASA panel studying UFOs is the first of its kind by the space agency.

NASA is set to discuss findings from the study on Thursday.

Maussan faced swift backlash and criticism from skeptics on Wednesday who questioned the authenticity of his presentation.

“This could really hurt efforts to take the issue seriously,” said a user of X social media platform, formerly known as Twitter. “Why didn’t they wait until a scientific paper was ready to publish it?”

Luxury Cruise Ship Carrying 206 Passengers Stranded In Remote Part Of Greenland

Luxury Cruise Ship Carrying 206 Passengers Stranded In Remote Part Of Greenland

The cruise was scheduled to run from September 1 to September 22.

A luxury cruise ship with more than 200 passengers and crew on board is stuck in a remote part of Greenland after it ran aground, the Independent  reported. The operator of the cruise ship said all its passengers are “safe and well”  but a rescue ship will not be able to arrive until Friday. The three-week cruise left on September 1 and was scheduled to return to port on September. 22. The cruise ship charged as much as $33,000 from the passengers for the trip, according to the New York Post.

As per Forbes, the expedition cruise ship called the Ocean Explorer became stuck Monday around noon, more than 850 miles from Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

”On Monday afternoon West Greenlandic time, the Arctic Command received a message that the cruise ship Ocean Explorer was grounded in the Alpefjord in Northeast Greenland, and that the ship is not immediately able to be freed by its own help,” Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command (JAC) said in a statement.

The Joint Arctic Command also revealed that the ship had so far been unable to free itself despite Tuesday’s tides.

Aurora Expeditions, the ship’s operator, said there was no immediate danger to anyone on board or to the surrounding environment, and there were enough supplies aboard the ship.

”The nearest help is far away, our units are far away, and the weather can be very unfavorable. However, in this specific situation, we do not see any immediate danger to human life or the environment. Of course, we are following the situation closely and take this incident very seriously”, Brian Jensen of the Danish military’s Joint Arctic Command added.

However, more concerning is the fact that several cases of COVID have been reported on board among the mostly elderly passengers, most of whom are Australian, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

”Everyone’s in good spirits. It’s a little bit frustrating, but we are in a beautiful part of the world. We’re sitting right near the glacier when we open our window,” Steven Fraser, a retired Aussie travelling with his wife said.

”We do have a couple of cases of Covid, but there’s a doctor on board … a lot of people on board are quite elderly,” Mr Fraser added.

An inspection vessel, the Knud Rasmussen, is en route toward the grounded cruise ship and is expected to arrive on Friday morning, authorities said. The Joint Arctic Command said it has asked a nearby cruise ship to remain in the area to provide assistance in case the situation changes, reported Insider.

Built in 2021, the Ocean Explorer is an Infinity-class vessel that can accommodate 134 passengers.  According to Aurora Expeditions’ website, the ship was “purpose-built for expedition travel to the world’s most wild and remote destinations.”

Its next voyage, a 12-day trip set to depart from Argentina on October 30 and travel throughout Antarctica, costs $13,395 per passenger, as per the Post.

Ex-India Star Points Out "One Thing" That Could Go Against Ishan Kishan

Former India batter Aakash Chopra feels Ishan Kishan‘s inability to rotate strike could against him as a middle-order batter, going into the World Cup. Kishan, who scored 82 during the group stage match against Pakistan, did not get the chance to bat in India’s first Super 4 match. Against Sri Lanka, Kishan was promoted from no. 5 to no. 4, scoring 33 runs off 61 deliveries as India posted a 213-run total. While analysing the match, Chopra pointed out Kishan’s tendency to play too many dot balls, which was earlier called out by former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan.

“Ishan Kishan did not get out to Dunith Wellalage. He was batting alright, although one thing is going to go against Ishan Kishan. He was sent at No. 4, made to bat slightly up the order, as the left-arm spinner was bowling well, which makes a lot of sense. Irfan Pathan was also talking about it on commentary that he is unable to take that many singles. He was playing too many dot balls and this was when you got to bat in the first 20 overs, although the pitch was slightly slow,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“The pitch was slow because the square is the same even though the pitch might be new. You couldn’t roll the pitch after watering it. So it becomes a spinner’s paradise and we saw that, but Ishan Kishan’s ability to rotate strike was a question and it will remain a question mark,” he added.

Chopra, on the other hand, was all praise for KL Rahul, who scored a century on his return to action, for checking all the boxes as a middle-order batter.

“KL Rahul looked the most comfortable till the time he was batting. He uses his feet against the spinners and plays the sweep as well. I mean he has got that kind of ability and because of that he validated once again why you want him to be a part of the team in the middle order,” he said.

Kerala: Two-day holiday in Kozhikode following Nipah outbreak

Kozhikode: In the wake of the Nipah outbreak in this north Kerala district, a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions here on Thursday and Friday.

The holiday was declared by Kozhikode District Collector A Geetha who in a Facebook post said educational institutions can arrange online classes on the two days for students.

However, there will be no change in university exams schedule, she added. A 24-year old health worker became Kerala’s fifth confirmed Nipah case on Wednesday since its recent outbreak.

Meanwhile, a 24-hour control room was set up in the neighbouring district of Wayanad following the Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode The Wayanad district administration also constituted 15 core committees to lead the prevention and surveillance activities and effectively deal with emergency situations.

The virus strain seen in the state was the Bangladesh variant that spreads from human to human and has a high mortality rate, though it is less infectious, the government said.

The condition of all 76 people who are in the high-risk contact category remains stable, State Health Minister Veena George had said.

The government had also said that 13 others who have mild symptoms are now being monitored in the hospital, and only a 9-year old child – among those infected – is in the Intensive Care Unit.

It had said that monoclonal antibodies have been ordered from ICMR to treat the child. It is the only available anti-viral treatment for Nipah virus infection, though it has not been clinically proven yet.

A review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was also held in the wake of the outbreak of the brain-damaging virus.

The high-level meeting chaired by the CM analysed the situation thoroughly and “we have come to the conclusion that all the possible prevention measures are in place and there is no need to panic”, George had said.

The minister had also said the WHO and ICMR studies had found out that the entire state of Kerala is prone to getting such infections, not just Kozhikode.
People living in forest areas have to take the highest precautions, George had said, and added that the latest case of the Nipah virus originated within five kilometres of a jungle area.

Four more wards – three in Villyapally panchayat and one in Purameri panchayat- in Kozhikode district had been declared as containment zones yesterday in addition to those announced on Tuesday.

Considering the serious nature of the disease, the Kozhikode administration had on Tuesday declared seven village panchayats-Atanchery, Maruthonkara, Tiruvallur, Kuttiyadi, Kayakkodi, Villyapalli, and Kavilumpara- as containment zones.

Trump legal cases expose corrupt political system in US: Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the numerous criminal cases lodged against former US president Donald Trump as “politically-motivated persecution” on behalf of his Democratic rivals, which exposes the corrupt political system prevalent in the United States.

Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum gathering in Vladivostok on Tuesday, Putin said the numerous court cases filed by US judicial authorities against Trump were political revenge by his rivals which showed the existing fundamental corruption rooted in US politics.

“As for Trump, for us what is happening in today’s conditions, in my opinion, is good because it shows the rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to teach others democracy,” Putin said.

Trump, who is the frontrunner Republican candidate for the 2024 US presidential elections, is stuck in a mire of criminal cases lodged against him. Among other things, he is charged with making an attempt to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Biden.

“Everything that is happening with Trump is the persecution of a political rival for political reasons. That’s what it is. And this is being done in front of the public of the United States and the whole world,” the Russian leader added.

Trump, who used to claim to have good relations with the Russian president, has vowed to end the Ukraine war if re-elected.

“We hear Mr. Trump say he will solve pressing problems in a few days, including the Ukrainian crisis. Well, this cannot but bring happiness. This is good,” Putin said.

Meanwhile, Pertinent to Putin’s argument, on Tuesday, the GOP speaker of the Republican-led House of Representatives gave the go-ahead for an impeachment investigation into US President Joe Biden.

Democratic lawmakers have denounced the Republicans’ move as an attempt to take revenge against Biden, who is a Democrat, for the double impeachment of Trump in 2017 and 2019 during the latter’s presidency.

Asia Cup: Who Will India Face If PAK vs SL Super 4 Match Gets Washed Out?

Rain has affected many matches in Colombo during Asia Cup 2023© AFP

The stage is set, with the Asia Cup 2023 set to find out which team will join India in the final of the tournament. Rohit Sharma‘s men secured two impressive victories — against Pakistan and Sri Lanka — in the Super 4s to book their ticket to the final. Pakistan and Sri Lanka remain the other two contenders while Bangladesh have already been knocked out. It’s been an intriguing journey for teams in the Asia Cup, with rain hampering their preliminary plans. But, what happens if the Super 4 match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan also gets washed out?

Is there a reserve day in place?

The Asian Cricket Council had put a reserve day in place for the India vs Pakistan Super 4 match but no such arrangement is in place for the Sri Lanka vs Pakistan match. A 20-over-per-side contest would need to be held on Thursday for the match to find a winner between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

What happens if rain washes out play?

Rain has already impacted many matches in the Asia Cup 2023 and it could be the case with the Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Super 4 match too as there’s rain forecast in Colombo on Thursday.

What has to be noted is that in the case of a complete washout, it would be the Sri Lankan team that goes through to the final because of a better Net Run Rate in comparison to Pakistan.

At present, Sri Lanka are placed second in the Super 4 points tally despite being on the same points (2) as Pakistan. Both the teams have won one game and lost one game apiece. But, the magnitude of Pakistan’s results see them sit third with an inferior Net Run Rate in comparison to their Super 4 opponents.

Sri Lanka’s NRR stands at -0.200 while Pakistan’s is at -1.892. Hence Pakistan need the match to be held today as the only way for them to qualify for the final is by beating the Lankans.

It also has to be noted that never in the history of the Asia Cup has there been a final between India and Pakistan, arguably the two most fierce rivals in the game.

Thanks to their 100% result in the Super 4 stage, India are through to the title decider and would look to extend their Asia Cup title tally (in the ODI format) to 7. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, sit on 5 titles in the 50-over format while Pakistan have won the tournament twice.

Return Property Papers To Borrowers Within 30 Days Of Repayment: RBI To Banks

Return Property Papers To Borrowers Within 30 Days Of Repayment: RBI To Banks

Regulated Entities would compensate borrower at the rate of Rs 5,000 for each day of delay

Mumbai:

The Reserve Bank on Wednesday directed banks and financial institutions to release all original movable or immovable property documents and remove charges registered with any registry within 30 days after full repayment of a loan by the borrower.

Failing to comply with the direction, Regulated Entities (REs) would compensate the borrower at the rate of Rs 5,000 for each day of delay, RBI said in a notification.

RBI noted that REs follow divergent practices in release of such movable or immovable property documents leading to customer grievances and disputes.

As part of Fair Practices Code and to make things uniform, RBI asked “REs to release all the original movable/immovable property documents and remove charges registered with any registry within a period of 30 days after full repayment/settlement of the loan account.” In case of delay in doing so, it said, the RE would communicate to the borrower reasons for such delay.

The borrower shall be given the option of collecting the original movable/ immovable property documents either from the banking outlet/branch where the loan account was serviced or any other office of the RE where the documents are available, as per her/his preference, it said.

The timeline and place of return of original movable/immovable property documents will be mentioned in the loan sanction letters issued on or after the effective date, it said.

In order to address the contingent event of demise of the sole borrower or joint borrowers, RBI said, REs shall have a well laid out procedure for return of original movable/immovable property documents to the legal heirs.

Such procedure would be displayed on the website of REs along with other similar policies and procedures for customer information, it said.

With regard to loss/damage to original movable/immovable property documents, the notification said, REs would assist the borrower in obtaining duplicate/certified copies of such documents and would bear the associated costs, in addition to paying compensation.

“However, in such cases, an additional time of 30 days will be available to REs to complete this procedure and the delayed period penalty will be calculated thereafter (i.e., after a total period of 60 days),” it said.

The compensation provided under these directions would be without prejudice to the rights of a borrower to get any other compensation as per any applicable law, it said.

These directions would be applicable to all cases where release of original movable/ immovable property documents falls due on or after December 1, 2023, RBI said.
