"Extremely Dangerous" Murderer, On The Run For Two Weeks, Caught In US

'Extremely Dangerous' Murderer, On The Run For Two Weeks, Caught In US

Brazilian murderer Danelo Cavalcante was surrounded by dozens of officers

Philadelphia:

For two weeks America held its breath as fugitive Brazilian murderer Danelo Cavalcante dodged drones, helicopters and law enforcement from the FBI to Border Patrol, only to be cornered Wednesday by a police dog which subdued him with just a “minor bite wound.”

Blood streaming down his face and clad in a Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt that he had apparently stolen during his days on the run, the diminutive Cavalcante was surrounded by dozens of officers clad in military-style gear in images shown on US television.

Pennsylvania state police revealed the details of his arrest at a press conference after he was dramatically caught in thick underbrush by the K9 unit in rural Pennsylvania, where he had spent days dodging law enforcement.

“Last night, shortly after midnight, a series of events started to unfold,” Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens of the Pennsylvania state police told reporters in Chester County.

A burglar alarm went off within a police perimeter, drawing law enforcement’s attention, and an aircraft picked up a heat signal in the woods, Bivens said.

With a storm breaking overhead the aircraft had to retreat, but in the morning police moved in on their target.

“They had the element of surprise. Cavalcante did not realize he was surrounded,” Bivens said.

The 34-year-old still refused to surrender and instead tried to crawl away through thick underbrush while still clutching a stolen rifle, Bivens said.

At that point law enforcement released their K9 unit which “subdued him and team members… moved in. He continued to resist but was forcibly taken into custody,” Bivens said.

An eyewitness described the surge of energy as police closed in.

“We basically just saw them storming, checking the tree lines, checking the stream and out of nowhere everybody started to congregate back by the shed and here they were already bringing him out,” store manager Jim Martin told NBC Philadelphia.

Footage on CNN showed heavily armed officers in camouflage handcuffing the Brazilian national and removing his shirt, revealing a large tattoo on his back, before placing him in the back of a police vehicle.

Cavalcante, who had been convicted of murdering his girlfriend — stabbing her dozens of times in front of her children — had just begun his sentence on August 31 when he climbed over the prison wall and cleared two razor-wire fences.

Measuring just five feet (1.52 meters) tall, Cavalcante had raised the stakes on Tuesday by entering a private garage to steal a .22 caliber rifle with a scope — then dodging pistol gunfire from the pursuing homeowner to get away.

Police declared him “armed and extremely dangerous.”

Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan told reporters one of the first calls made after Cavalcante’s capture was to his victim’s family, “who as you can imagine have been living in a complete nightmare.”

“They can now finally sleep again,” she added.

Police long struggled to narrow down the fugitive’s location in the heavily wooded area. However, Cavalcante repeatedly popped up on private security cameras and even trail cams meant to monitor wildlife, turning his escapade into a kind of grim reality TV show.

Stealing from houses, he succeeded in finding clothes, food, the rifle, a van and somehow even managed to get shaved. At Wednesday’s press conference, police said that they would replace the Eagles hoodie for whoever Cavalcante had allegedly stolen it from.

On Tuesday, after the rifle theft, authorities set up roadblocks in the rural roads around Bucktown, Pennsylvania, where elite SWAT police and armored vehicles were also deployed.

In addition to flooding the search zone with messages warning residents, a decision was taken early Tuesday to close area schools.

Defending against criticism that the police were inept in the manhunt, Bivens had called Cavalcante the “proverbial needle in the haystack.”

The director of Lundale Farm, some 40 miles (64 kilometers) outside of Philadelphia, said police were “walking through our property, walking through the woods.”

She said the area has “trees, creeks and bridges and all kinds of corners (where) you could sneak around.”

Police had upped the reward for information on Cavalcante’s whereabouts, from $20,000 to $25,000. Cavalcante is also wanted for murder in Brazil, where his name is officially listed with a different spelling: Danilo Souza Cavalcante.

It was not immediately clear if the newly recaptured convict would face new charges in the United States.

But Pennsylvania authorities were in celebratory mode, a large group of officers in camouflage even bunching up for a victory photo around the handcuffed Cavalcante.

“Our nightmare is finally over and the good guys won,” Ryan told the press conference.

"Deeply Troubling": India On US Cop Laughing After Indian Student's Death

'Deeply Troubling': India On US Cop Laughing After Indian Student's Death

Jaahnavi Kandula was a master’s student at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus.

New Delhi:

India has urged the US to conduct a thorough investigation into bodycam footage of a Seattle cop joking about the death of an Indian student after she was hit by a speeding police car.

Jaahnavi Kandula, 23, was killed in January after being hit by a police vehicle driven by Officer Kevin Dave. He was driving at nearly 120 kmph on the way to a report of an overdose, the Seattle Times newspaper reported.

Kandula was a master’s student at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus.

In a video released by the Seattle Police Department on Monday, another cop can be heard joking and laughing while discussing the accident.

In the clip, Seattle Police Officers’ Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer, in a call with the guild’s president, can be heard saying, “She is dead” before bursting out into laughter and calling Ms. Kandula “a regular person”. He further said, through bursts of laughter, “Yeah, just write a check. Eleven thousand dollars.”

The clip ends with him saying: “She was 26 anyway, she had limited value”, getting her age wrong.

Indian Consulate in San Francisco termed the handling of Kandula’s death in a road accident as “deeply troubling” and sought action against those involved in the case.

“We have taken up the matter strongly with local authorities in Seattle & Washington State as well as senior officials in Washington DC for a thorough investigation & action against those involved in this tragic case,” the mission said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“The Consulate & Embassy will continue to closely follow up on this matter with all concerned authorities,” it added.

Kandula hailed from Andhra Pradesh and had been pursuing her master’s degree at Northeastern University in Seattle, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser launched to support her family.

“The family has nothing to say. Except I wonder if these men’s daughters or granddaughters have value. A life is a life,” her uncle, Ashok Kandula, was quoted as saying on the page.

France orders Apple to halt iPhone 12 sales over high radiation concerns

France’s radiation watchdog has ordered American tech giant Apple to immediately withdraw all iPhone 12 models from the country’s market due to their lack of compliance with European regulations on electromagnetic wave exposure to humans.

In a press release on Tuesday, the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) said testing found that the popular smartphone emitted far more electromagnetic radiation than the amount the European Union regulations allow to be absorbed by the body.

ANFR notified Apple of its decision to ban iPhone 12 sales after the tests showed the smartphone’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was above threshold radiation levels and said they had to be removed from the French market as of September 12.

“Apple must immediately take all measures to prevent the affected phones present in the supply chain from being made available,” the agency said.

“For phones already sold, Apple must take corrective action as soon as possible to bring the affected phones into compliance. Otherwise, it will be up to Apple to recall them.”

The regulator said accredited labs had found that iPhone 12 devices exceeded the SAR value mandated by the EU, which is four watts-per-kilogram (W/kg) when held in hand or in a trouser pocket.

Jean-Noel Barrot, the French minister of digital affairs, said in an interview with the newspaper Le Parisien that a software update would be sufficient to fix the radiation issues linked to the iPhone model, which the California-based company has been selling since 2020.

“Apple is expected to respond within two weeks,” he added. “If they fail to do so, I am prepared to order a recall of all iPhones 12 in circulation. The rule is the same for everyone, including the digital giants.”

Barrot also stressed that the French watchdog would pass on its findings to regulators in other EU member states, saying, “In practical terms, this decision could have a snowball effect.”

The French government has over the past years obliged digital retailers to display the radiation value of products on the packaging of cell phones, tablets, and other electronic devices.

Introduced in October 2020, the iPhone 12 has been a popular model due to a lower price point than the subsequent models.

Earlier on Tuesday, Apple announced the iPhone 15 line of devices, featuring the USB-C connector in order to comply with an EU mandate adopted in 2022.

"Played With 12 Players…": Malinga's Post On IND-SL Game Is Viral

India beat Sri Lanka to reach the Asia Cup 2023 final© AFP

The Indian cricket team defeated Sri Lanka to book their spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final but the performance from young spinner Dunith Wellalage earned him praise from both experts and fans alike. He took a brilliant five-wicket haul that included the prized wickets of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and then played a gritty knock of 42 from 46 deliveries to almost take his side to victory. Although he fell short, Wellalage received a massive compliment from legendary Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga.

Malinga took to social media to say that considering the all-round performance of Wellalage, it felt like Sri Lanka were playing with 12 players and even predicted that he can be a big star in the future.

“It’s fair to say that SL played with 12 players today. That’s how good Dunith was,” Malinga wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “He’s got a brilliant head on his young shoulders to go with his all-round skill set. I believe he’s on his way to becoming the most important player for SL in ODIs for the next decade.”

“For me, Virat Kohli is the No. 1 batsman. I am very happy to have got those two (Kohli and Rohit) big wickets. I trust my basics, and trust myself,” said Wellalage in the post-match press meet.

The 20-year-old said he was trying to bowl a wicket-to-wicket line against a set of experienced batsmen.

“The batters were set and India had got off to a fabulous start. I just tried to bowl wicket to wicket. Once we got those three wickets in three overs, we were able to put India under pressure.

“There was turn and when you put the ball in the right area, you could unsettle the batsmen. But I would have been happier with a win,” said Wellalage.

"Extremely Dangerous" Escaped Murderer Steals Gun, Outwits US Manhunt

'Extremely Dangerous' Escaped Murderer Steals Gun, Outwits US Manhunt

Authorities have set up roadblocks in the wooded, rural area around Pennsylvania

Philadelphia:

Schools outside Philadelphia were closed and residents told to lock their doors Tuesday after an escaped Brazilian murderer dodged gunfire to steal a rifle from a home and was declared “extremely dangerous.”

Danelo Cavalcante, who made a daring escape from Chester County Prison nearly two weeks ago, has become the subject of fear and fascination for Americans as he avoids police dogs, drones, helicopters and special armed units.

Authorities set up roadblocks in the wooded, rural area around Bucktown, Pennsylvania, where elite SWAT police and armored vehicles were also deployed.

Although police have failed to corner the convicted killer, the Brazilian national has popped up repeatedly on residential security footage and even nature cameras set up to monitor wildlife, turning his criminal exploits into a grim reality TV show.

Since climbing over his prison wall on August 31, the 34-year-old has been able to steal new clothing, food and a van which he later abandoned, and managed to get a shave.

On Monday night, he raised the stakes by breaking into a home garage near Bucktown and taking a .22 caliber rifle with a scope and flashlight attached to the weapon, Pennsylvania police spokesman George Bivens told a press conference.

The homeowner confronted the fugitive and opened fire with a pistol but appeared to have missed the fugitive, who got away.

Cavalcante’s jailbreak came a week after he was sentenced to life for slaying his girlfriend by stabbing her dozens of times in front of her children in 2021. He is also wanted for murder in Brazil, US police say.

Cavalcante’s mother, who lives in rural Brazil, told the New York Times in an interview that she wasn’t surprised he was able to give the authorities the slip — just as he did in Brazil after allegedly killing a man there.

“His training was his suffering,” Iracema Cavalcante told the paper, recounting her son’s poor, rural upbringing.

She also despaired about him facing life in prison in the United States, saying “it’s better to die soon” than to “go to a place and suffer and die in that place.”

Cavalcante, just five feet (1.52 meters) tall, is “considered armed and extremely dangerous,” Bivens said.

In addition to flooding the search zone — a wide area west of Philadelphia — with messages warning residents, a decision was taken early Tuesday to close schools in the Oakland J. Robert school district.

“We’re not evacuating homes at this point. We’re asking residents to be vigilant and, again, lock their doors,” Bivens said.

The police spokesman said there were around 500 officers, including heavily armed tactical units, combing the area, but that they are hampered by the wooded terrain.

Defending himself against criticism that the police have been inept in the manhunt, Bivens called Cavalcante the “proverbial needle in the haystack.”

Helicopters buzzed over an area that included Lundale Farm, some 40 miles (64 kilometers) outside of Philadelphia. Its executive director, Becki Patterson, said police were “walking through our property, walking through the woods.”

She said the area has “trees, creeks and bridges and all kinds of corners (where) you could sneak around.”

“It’s been very stressful.”

Police have upped the reward for information on Cavalcante’s whereabouts, from $20,000 to $25,000.

There have been several sightings of the convict so far, including some in which he was shirtless, while in others he is wearing a hoodie.

Police say Cavalcante had changed his appearance, shaving off the dark beard and mustache seen on his original “wanted” poster.

Police also said that the escapee had abandoned a stolen 2020 White Ford Transit van, reportedly taken from a dairy in West Chester. He’d apparently run out of fuel.

Prison officials last week released a video showing how Cavalcante was able to escape.

It shows the convict, then wearing a white T-shirt and jeans, crab-walking up two parallel walls and then climbing to the roof before making his way over two razor-wire fences.

Former Indian Footballer Bhaichung Bhutia To Join Pawan Chamling's Party

Former Indian Footballer Bhaichung Bhutia To Join Pawan Chamling's Party

The former footballer has accused the SKM of rampant corruption.

Gangtok:

Bhaichung Bhutia, the former Indian football captain, is set to join the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party, the main opposition party in the state led by former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, ending a week-long speculation about his political future.

Mr Bhutia is currently serving as the working president of the Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP), the regional party that he founded in 2018. He was the party’s face in the 2019 assembly elections but lost his bid to win a seat.

The ‘Sikkimese Sniper’ said that he is in talks with the SDF about merging HSP with the party. He has also said that he will consult with other party leaders and members before making a final decision.

“There are still some leaders to meet and the merger of two parties will not happen immediately, it will take time. I have not fixed a date to join SDF or merge yet, that will happen after a thorough discussion,” Mr Bhutia said.

Mr Bhutia threw his weight behind the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) in the previous election and even met with Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay ahead of the 2019 vote. However, the former footballer has accused the SKM of rampant corruption.

“We were all in support of Parivartan’s promise made by Prem Singh Golay in 2019. We had tactically fielded candidates where the SKM had weaker candidates in constituencies. We wanted the Parivartan as much as SKM did. However, in these 4 years, the Parivartan has failed under Golay and SKM. They are now full of corrupt leaders and businessmen who in the past ruined 25 years ruling SDF party,” he said.

The 32-seat Sikkim assembly is set to go to polls in 2024. The SKM, a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), currently occupies 19 of the 32 seats in the state assembly.
