Who Was Jaahnavi Kandula, Indian Student Killed By Police Vehicle In US

Jaahnavi Kandula, 23, was from Andhra Pradesh.

US has assured of a fair probe after a video showing a cop joking about the death of an Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula in Seattle after she was hit by a speeding police car went viral. The Indian Consulate in San Francisco had expressed concern over the handling of the case. The video shows officer Daniel Auderer laughing about the deadly crash and saying there was no need for a criminal investigation against his colleague Kevin Dave, who was driving the car.

Who was Jaahnavi Kandula?

The 23-year-old was from Andhra Pradesh and pursuing a master’s degree from the Northeastern University campus in South Lake Union.

She went to the US from Bengaluru on a student exchange programme in 2021 and was due to graduate this December.

Ms Kandula’s family is deeply distressed by the revelations. Her grandfather told NDTV that the family had not recovered from loss and the policeman’s behaviour makes it worse. “How can anyone speak like that after a tragic accident?” he asked.

What happened on January 23?

Ms Kandula was hit and killed by a police car while crossing the street. According to The Seattle Times, Kevin Dave, the police officer driving the car was going 119 kmph and the graduate student’s body was thrown more than 100 feet.

Ms Kandula was taken to Harbourview Medical Centre, but died due to her injuries.

How the police officer on the scene reacted?

TheSeattle Times said that officer Auderer was called to the scene and his body camera recorded audio from a call he made to a colleague.

“But she is dead,” the officer is heard saying before laughing. “No, it’s a regular person. Yeah, just write a cheque,” he says, before laughing again.

“Eleven thousand dollars. She was 26, anyway. She had limited value.”

After the Seattle Police Department released the footage on Monday, it led to outrage on social media. “Sue the Police department…that’s how they will learn to respect dead,” one user said on X (formerly Twitter).

“If this was an American citizen killed on Indian soil then USA would have shaken up Indian government to the roots! Those policemen should be punished in prison or their licence should be permanently suspended,” said another.

What officer Audrer said after the outrage?

Officer Auderer said his comments were taken out of context. Jason Rantz, a radio host, said he has a written statement from the police officer saying his comments were meant to mimic how city attorneys might try to minimise liability for the woman’s death.

But Mr Kandula’s family is surprised why this information was not revealed earlier. “We have lost our child but this is beyond shocking,” her grandfather told NDTV.

Sergeant JT Moore has been praised by the police department for showing exceptional bravery in saving the life of the driver and pulling him away from the harm’s way.

According to the police, Sergeant Moore responded to a crash shortly after 1am on Saturday and found a car on fire off the side of the road near a forest.

Sergeant Moore ran towards the car with a fire extinguisher and was trying to put out the flames when he noticed the driver was still inside.

He quickly jumped in and pulled the driver to safety, away from the flames that had engulfed the car.

“To say we are proud of Sgt JT Moore would be an understatement,” the police department said on Facebook.

“We commend Sgt. Moore for his life-saving actions, all while putting himself in harm’s way,” the department’s post further said.

US Assures Probe Amid Outrage Over Video Of Cop Joking On Indian's Death

India Flags Video Of Cop Joking On Andhra Girl's Death, US Assures Probe

Jaahnavi Kandula, 23, was killed after being hit by a speeding police car in January.

Washington:

The US government has assured India of a quick and fair investigation into the death of Andhra Pradesh student Jaahnavi Kandula in an accident in Seattle, reports news agency PTI. The Indian student was killed after being hit by a speeding police car in January.

A video released by Seattle Police Department showing a cop laughing while talking about the accident has sparked outrage. The US government swung into action after Indian consulate raised the issue and sought action against those responsible for Jaahnavi Kandula’s death and also those heard joking on the video.

In the video, Officer Daniel Auderer can be heard laughing about the deadly crash and also says that there was no need for a criminal investigation against his colleague Kevin Dave, who was driving the car.

US lawmakers and Indian-Americans have expressed outrage over the death of Kandula and the video.

“Jaahnavi Kandula came here for graduate work from India. She was killed on a crosswalk by a speeding police car, and officer Auderer said her life had ‘limited value.’ I thought of my dad who came here in his 20s. Mr. Auderer, the life of every Indian immigrant has infinite value,” Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna said.

“Anyone who thinks that a human life has “limited value” should not be serving in law enforcement,” Khanna said.

Indian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal said: “This is appalling. I hope to see justice for Jaahnavi Kandula’s family and accountability for those involved.”

In a letter to the Kandula family, Seattle City Mayor Bruce Harrell said that the comments made by one person do not reflect the feelings of the city or the communities that call it home.

“We recognise that Jaahnavi’s death is a loss for our whole community – the loss of a young woman who had so much life ahead of her to do amazing things and share that joy with loved ones,” Harrell said in his communication to the Kandula family.

Senior administration officials are believed to have assured India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, that the entire incident has been taken very seriously by them.

They are monitoring its investigation from Washington DC the progress of the case to ensure that there is adequate accountability.

Ghulam Hassan Bhat is former chief of Jammu and Kashmir police

New Delhi:

Ghulam Hassan Bhat led the police force in Jammu and Kashmir, among the toughest jobs in the country. But nothing could have prepared him for those 10 steps he took last evening. Those steps led him to the body of his young son Himayun, a senior police officer killed in an encounter with terrorists in Kashmir’s Anantnag.

A video of Mr Bhat walking up to Himayun’s body and laying a wreath on it has shattered hearts. The retired cop’s composure despite his crushing loss, his heavy steps and a short pause for one last time at his departed son sum up the human cost of terrorism.

Himayun Bhat, a deputy superintendent with Jammu and Kashmir Police, was among three senior security officers killed in a gunfight with terrorists in Anantnag. Colonel Manpreet Singh from Chandigarh and Major Ashish Dhonack from Haryana also lost their lives in the encounter that is still on.

Himayun reportedly suffered heavy injuries in the gunfight and succumbed due to heavy blood loss.

The last rites were held in Budgam last evening, with people attending in large numbers. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and police chief Dilbag Singh paid tribute to the police officer.

“Paid tributes to JKP’s DySP Humayun Bhat, who laid down his life in an anti-terror operation in Anantnag. I salute the indomitable courage and supreme sacrifice of Col Manpreet Singh & Major Ashish Dhonack. Entire nation stands firmly with their families in this hour of grief,” the Lieutant Governor’s office said in a post on X.

Himayun is survived by his wife and a son they welcomed just a month back.

On social media, the video of Mr Bhat’s farewell to his son evoked strong reactions, with many describing the site as “heart wrenching” and saluting the sacrifice of the young police officer.

Domestic abuse can be mental, physical, economic or sexual in nature. The importance of communities and families and colleagues calling this out…supporting women to feeling less like sacrificial victims for their family’s reputations or judging them for putting their need for safety before the needs of what’s better for the kids…The saddest part being – certain women being the perpetrators of these atrocities as a result of generational trauma .. women against women- while ignoring the integral role men play in supporting victimised women.”

She continued, “This is not a war of the sexes but instead a conflict of values. Always lovely catching up with the beautiful Malala Yousafzai. A heart-wrenching speech by Oprah [Winfrey]. A room full of caring thought leaders Francois Pinault – Salma [Hayek] – Vivi, Lauren Sanchez, Wendi Murdoch, Kim Kardashian Elsa Collins, Julia Garner, Lauren Santo Domingo, Nicole Kidman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kimbal Musk, Christiana Musk, Derek Blasberg and sorely missed but present in spirit and always supporting societal enhancement and cultural shifts @edward_enninful …a fantastic performance by @florenceandthemachine and the most fun after party for which I came prepared with breakfast!”

Ahead of festive season, Nepal to import 20,000 metric tonnes of sugar from India

Kathmandu: Nepal government is set to import 20,000 metric tonnes (MT) of sugar from India ahead of the upcoming festivals, including Vijaya Dashami and Deepawali to meet the domestic demand. Although Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies has asked the Finance Ministry to give customs waiver for importing 60,000 MT of sugar to meet the local demand, the Finance Ministry has given permission to import only 20,000 MT for the time being.

According to Finance Ministry spokesperson, Dhaniram Sharma, the Ministry has given 50 per cent discount on customs duty, which means 15 per cent less from the earlier imposed 30 per cent customs duty.

Two companies, Salt Trading Corporation (STC) and Food Management and Trading Company, both would import 10,000 MT sugar each for the upcoming festival season, according to Sharma. However, divisional manager of STC Brajesh Jha said that it had asked the government permission to import 50,000 MT of sugar.

According to Jha, Nepal’s domestic demand for sugar stands at 3,00,000 MT and it needs to import a huge quantity of sugar mainly from India. There are 12 sugar factories in Nepal that produce around 1,00,000 MT of sugar.

According to an estimate, Nepal imports at least 70 per cent sugar from India. Besides, thousands of tons of sugars are brought through illegal channel without paying customs duty.

Sugar is available in the black market in Kathmandu and the prices ranges from Nepali Rupees 100 to 125 per kg, where as it costs around Rs 40 – 50 in India.
