Kohli's Simulation, Iyer Faces… – Ind's Tactics For SA 2nd Test Revealed

Virat Kohli looked a million dollars as he did extensive simulation for South Africa’s left-arm pacer Nandre Burger but Shreyas Iyer‘s problems seemed to continue while facing a barrage of short balls at nets on Monday. On the New Year’s Day, it was business as usual for Kohli, who had an extended session lasting close to an hour. First, he was at the centre nets against bowlers and then he faced high-intensity throwdowns for about 20 to 25 minutes at outside nets. Kohli is known to come to nets with specific purpose and on Monday, it seemed he wanted to extensively bat against a left-arm pacer. Since the Indian team’s pace bowling roster doesn’t include a left-armer, a net bowler was summoned and Kohli faced a good 25 to 30 deliveries from him in between playing against Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, R Ashwin and Avesh Khan.

Kohli was repeatedly seen putting in a big stride forward and at times walking a couple of steps to whip the bowler through mid wicket.

However, the only problem here was that the youngster provided by Cricket South Africa (CSA) was at least 15 clicks lesser in terms of pace compared to Burger, who took seven wickets on debut in the opening Test at Centurion.

The net bowler’s lack of pace allowed Kohli to read the inswing and then walk down a couple of steps to flick him through mid wicket.

In match situations, Kohli won’t get so much time to come on the front foot.

A six off Ashwin was majestic and the way he played Bumrah, with so much time at his disposal, was a treat.

Iyer’s shortcoming

Shreyas Iyer’s weakness against short ball is well documented. But the Mumbaikar wasn’t amused one bit when the question cropped up during the ODI World Cup at home.

However, the Centurion Test once again exposed his shortcomings against bounce.

He continues to have serious issues while facing anything that’s remotely above his waist line. He looked iffy while batting and as Nuwan Senaviratne, the Sri Lankan left-arm side-armer, bowled one from 18 yards, Iyer reacted late while trying to pull the delivery and was hit on the fleshy part of the stomach.

For a brief period, he stopped batting, looked in pain and was given water before he resumed his job.

All three throwdown specialists bowled to him from 18 yards, and he didn’t for once look solid and display enough confidence even though he is an automatic choice in this playing XI.

Shardul bats in the nets

After being hit on the left shoulder during Saturday’s throwdown session at Centurion, Shardul Thakur was back at training, albeit strictly as a batter.

Shardul wasn’t seen bowling but he did bat at centre net as well as throwdown nets.

He didn’t seem in any discomfort and was looking good as he tackled the short balls.

India trail the two-match series after suffering a heavy defeat in the opener.

Karimnagar: Custom milled rice becomes boon for millers

Instead of returning the total quantity of CMR rice to the government, millers are holding back some quantity and making money by selling it in other States at higher price

Karimnagar: Custom milled rice becomes boon for millers

Instead of returning the total quantity of CMR rice to the government, millers are holding back some quantity and making money by selling it in other States at higher price

Karimnagar: The practice of Custom Milled Rice (CMR) has become a boon for rice millers. Though CMR has to be returned to the government within the stipulated time-frame, some of the millers are delaying the supply.

Instead of returning the total quantity of CMR rice to the government, millers are holding back some quantity and making money by selling it in other States at higher price, sources in the Civil Supplies department said.

On the other hand, the rice shortfall, which develops with shifting of the rice for other purposes, has been replaced by the Re.1 a kg rice supplied to white ration card holders through fair price shops by the government.

Millers are purchasing the Re 1 rice from brokers by spending Rs.2,200 to Rs.2,400 per quintal. Brokers purchase the rice from the public at Rs.10 per kilogram, the sources added. Since it takes time to collect rice from the public, the return of CMR rice is being delayed. In the meantime, about 2.66 lakh quintals of paddy went missing in a few rice mills in Huzurabad and Jammikunta areas. This came to light during an inspection carried out by the Task Force and Enforcement officials from Hyderabad on Thursday.

A total of 5.41 lakh quintals of paddy was allocated to rice mills during the 2022-23 Vanakalam and Yasangi seasons. About 42 percent paddy (Rs 52.13 crore worth) went missing, officials said. About 53,000 quintals of paddy was allocated to a rice mill in Huzurabad and 26,000 quintals of crop was not there in the mill. In another mill, 18,000 quintals of paddy went for milling as against the 24,000 quintals earmarked for it. Not a single grain was found in another mill which was allocated 18,000 quintals. Out of 66,000 quintals earmarked, 32,000 quintals disappeared in a rice mill.

There was a shortfall of 87,000 quintals as against 1.60 lakh quintals allocated to a rice mill in Jammikunta. In Illandakunta, 85 quintals went missing as against 2.20 lakh quintals earmarked to a rice mill. Task Force and Enforcement OSD Prabhakar Rao, who led the team, said a report would be submitted to higher officials and further action would be based on instructions from above.

In June 2023, the then Peddapalli collector Sanjeeta Satyanarayana formed 19 special teams along with Tahsildars and Civil Supplies officials to inspect rice mills in the district since 2.34 lakh tons of CMR rice (Rs.750 crore worth) of the last four seasons were pending with rice millers.

Based on the Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumari’s instructions, the Collector formed teams. Irregularities were found in the inspections by the teams. Similar irregularities were found in other parts of the erstwhile Karimnagar district as well.

Officials opined that lack of frequent checking by officials was the main reason for the misuse of CMR rice.

It was the responsibility of officials to check frequently how much quantity of paddy was allocated to a particular mill, milled crop and remaining paddy. However, no such checking has taken place. Taking it as an advantage, millers are misusing CMR rice.

Acceptance Of Nawaz Sharif's Nomination Papers From Lahore Seat Challenged

Acceptance Of Nawaz Sharif's Nomination Papers From Lahore Seat Challenged

Mr Sharif is already being tipped as the prime minister by the military establishment

Lahore:

The acceptance of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers from Lahore’s National Assembly seat for the general elections was on Monday challenged by senior members of jailed former premier Imran Khan’s party, saying the three-time former prime minister was disqualified for life by the top court in 2017.

Mr Khan’s party approached the appellate tribunal after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rejected the nomination papers of Mr Khan and 90 percent of important leaders of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. The ECP, however, approved the candidature of Sharif from two National Assembly seats from Mansahara and Lahore.

The returning officers who are bureaucrats have en masse rejected the nomination papers of the PTI leaders from across the country apparently on the direction of the military establishment.

On Monday, several PTI leaders including former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, PTI President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, former federal ministers Moonis Elahi and Zartaj Gul challenged the rejection of their papers in the election tribunals of the high court.

The Returning Officers have rejected the nomination papers of a record of over 3,500 candidates for the national and provincial assembly seats.

On Monday, Advocate Ishtiaq Ahmad filed an appeal before the Lahore High Court’s appellate tribunal challenging the candidature of Mr Sharif for being declared disqualified for lifetime by the Supreme Court.

“The acceptance of Nawaz Sharif’s paper is illegal and unlawful as in 2017 the SC had disqualified him for lifetime in the Panama Papers case,” Advocate Ahmad said and added that under the law of the land, the 73-year-old Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader can’t contest Feb 8 polls.

Mr Sharif is already being tipped as the prime minister by the military establishment for the fourth time.

According to political observers, the military has removed all legal and other hurdles on his way to becoming the premier for a record fourth time.

“The military establishment is making sure that Imran Khan and his party couldn’t even contest the polls and all required measures and tactics it has made so far have fully exposed the military,” they said.

Meanwhile, the ECP claimed that the nomination papers of Imran Khan for two National Assembly seats in Mianwali and Lahore cities were rejected on “moral” and other grounds including his conviction in the Toshakhana corruption case.

The preliminary list of candidates will be displayed on Jan 11 and candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by the next day.

The electoral symbols will be allotted on Jan 13 while polling for the general elections will be held on Feb 8.

The PTI has termed the rejection of nomination papers of most of its candidates including its founder Imran Khan on flimsy grounds as “state terrorism.” “Returning officers are accomplices & reason why PTI had requested ROs from the Judiciary & not bureaucracy. Some group members may not be aware but bureaucracy including deputy commissioners signing illegal restraining orders for PTI leadership have been appointed ROs by the interim setup, adding more hostility to the already perpetuated situation,” a PTI spokesperson said.

PTI Chairman Gohar Khan said the state machinery is in full swing against PTI’s candidates whose proposers and seconders or themselves are being openly harassed, assaulted, and pushed back from ROs’ offices.

“This is the worst kind of misuse of authority and abuse of process. It is a flagrant failure of ECP in the performance of its constitutional duties. We strongly condemn and deplore this. But Tigers will stay steadfast till February 08 and thereafter.”

Iran a role model of strategic support for Palestine

Mushaal Hussein Mullick criticized the double standards of the West towards Islamic countries, especially the Gaza war.

We appreciate Iran’s support for the oppressed nations, including the Muslim people of Palestine and Kashmir, she said.

The blatant violation of human rights and international laws by the Zionist occupying forces has reached its peak in Gaza, she added.

We are witnessing a massacre and the silence of international bodies, especially Western countries in the face of the Zionist regime’s crimes, she noted.

The Islamic World needs serious steps to strengthen unity and gain common interests, however, she said.

The West must understand that the world is like a small village, therefore, for the stability of economic, strategic, and political relations, the existence of peace and tranquility is inevitable, she stressed.

Role of Martyr Soleimani in boosting prowess of Palestinians

Before the Resistance groups in the Gaza Strip became more organized, the local people and residents in the West Bank had to confront the Zionist enemy using only stones and basic resources during the first intifada.

During that time, the modern Israeli military could easily enter Palestinian areas with minimal resistance and pressure on the native population to either leave their homes or submit to the will of Tel Aviv.

However, following the second intifada, there was a shift in the battlefield dynamics and an increase in the vulnerability of the regime in occupied Palestine.

The former commander of the Quds Force, in collaboration with Lebanese Hezbollah, had the opportunity in the late 1990s to train exiled forces of the Hamas movement in Lebanon in weapon manufacturing and combat tactics against the Israeli enemy.

Now, over two decades since Tehran began its military support to the Resistance in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian groups have gained the capability to defend themselves using various types of missiles, intelligence-driven drones, and anti-armor weapons, effectively countering the Israeli war machine in Gaza.

Martyr Soleimani played a prominent role in strengthening the deterrence power of the Gaza Strip

After the Israeli occupying forces withdrew from the Gaza Strip, control of the Palestinian territory was handed over to the Palestinian Islamic Resistance movement, Hamas. Tehran began providing material and spiritual aid to the Palestinian groups after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, but its significant involvement can be traced back to the Oslo Accords, which marked the effectiveness of the new generation of resistance and the legitimacy of armed struggle against the Israeli enemy.

The development of relations between Iran and the Hamas movement began with the presence of high-ranking leaders of the Palestinian group during the Tehran Conference (1990-1991). Just one year after the formation of this strategic relationship, the then prime minister of the Zionist regime, Yitzhak Rabin, exiled nearly 420 key figures of Hamas to Lebanon, due to the prominent role of this Palestinian group during the intifada.

At that time, the Quds Force of the IRGC and Lebanese combatants played an important role in training Hamas forces in weapon-making, combat tactics, creating secret tunnels, and urban warfare.

Some personalities affiliated with the Resistance Axis and Israeli officers believe that Martyr Soleimani traveled to the Gaza Strip many times in secret and individually played a role in strengthening Gaza against possible attacks by the Israeli military.

Role of Martyr Soleimani in boosting prowess of Palestinians

Rocket power of Gaza Resistance lasting legacy of Martyr Soleimani

Due to the complete siege of the Palestinian territories by the military spying apparatus of the Zionist regime, it was not possible to directly purchase or create an assembly line of weapons inside the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

On this basis, Martyr Soleimani followed the two strategies of creating a secret network of arms transferring and producing all kinds of defensive weapons with minimum facilities in his agenda.

The Resistance arms transfer network followed the transfer of arms to the Palestinian forces from three routes namely Sudan, Egypt, and Libya.

In one of these cases, the Egyptian security service announced the transfer of 138 Grad rockets from Libya to the Gaza Strip.

According to the Washington Institute, Quds Force and IRGC forces sometimes left rocket-making equipment near the waters bordering Gaza for Palestinian forces to pick up these packages near the shore.

For example, some military commanders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad were trained in Lebanon and Iran to produce short-range Al-Qassam rockets from simple and civilian materials.

Today, the Ezzeddin al-Qassam and Saraya Al-Quds battalions are equipped with weapons such as Shahab and Al-Qasef drones or Qassam, Fajr, Badr, Qassem, Grad, and Baraq class missiles that can attack the defense system. Challenge the Iron Dome and remove it from the distance.

The ranges of Resistance missiles are estimated between 3 to 250 km, which means that they can target different parts of occupied Palestine.

According to published statistics, it is estimated that between 4 and 5 thousand Palestinian rockets have been fired towards the occupied territories since October 7th.

The most important achievement and legacy of Martyr Soleimani in the path of empowering Palestinian groups is the establishment of a network of equipping the West Bank and Gaza Strip Resistance in various ways.

While Tel Aviv and some of Iran’s regional rivals tried to inflict a serious blow on Tehran’s strategic relations with the Palestinian Resistance through religious sedition or civil war in Syria, Martyr Soleimani never provided military-financial aid to the Palestinian Resistance. It did not stop the forces of the Hamas movement.

For Haj Qassem, the Palestinian issue was never associated with the mere view of “national interests”, but he followed the support of the Resistance groups as a “religious duty”. Now, the result of Lt. Gen. Soleimani’s foresight can be clearly seen during the Al-Aqsa Storm Operation.

Role of Martyr Soleimani in boosting prowess of Palestinians

The successful Al-Aqsa Storm Operation resulted from Martyr Soleimani’s efforts

Now, the Resistance forces can penetrate 24 kilometers deep into the occupied territories, inflicting irreparable blows on the regime’s military-security structure, and impose a long and attrition war on the Israeli enemy.

According to the estimates made by the economic institutions of the regime, the cost of Israel’s war and the resistance of the Gaza Strip has crossed the border of 50 billion dollars. Also, following the implementation of the unification of the fields policy, the proper performance of the Yemeni National Army in the urbanization of Eilat and Lebanon’s Hezbollah on the northern front has disrupted the economic life in the occupied territories.

Now it is possible to consider the successful Al-Aqsa Storm Operation and the excellent performance of the Resistance Axis on different fronts as one of the results of Martyr Soleimani’s strategy towards the Palestinian issue.

From the Tehran conference in 1990-1991 until the 22-day war in Gaza, Soleimani always sought to provide financial aid and weapons to Palestinian groups and create a joint operations room between them to provide the necessary ground to defeat the Zionist enemy.

These aids caused the Palestinian Resistance groups to be gradually recognized as influential players in the development of the Levant region.

This great commander firmly believed in this path to the extent that in a letter to the financial officer of the Quds Force, he requested that his wages be allocated to the Palestinian issue until the final victory of the Palestinian brothers against Israel.

Martyr Soleimani’s sincere and non-stop assistance to Palestinian groups has made them gradually become self-sufficient in the production of defense products and defend their motherland and the first Qibla of Muslims.

Years of efforts to defend the Quds cause made the Leader of the Islamic Revolution speak about his role in equipping the Palestinian Resistance and the martyrdom of the Palestinian leaders, hours after the martyrdom of this Iranian commander.
