South Korean opposition leader stabbed in neck

Lee, who heads the main opposition Democratic Party, was stabbed on the left side of his neck by a man who lunged out of the crowd as he was walking with journalists on Tuesday morning. Emergency officials have said he is not in a critical condition, although his exact status is unknown.

Pictures in South Korean media showed 59-year-old Lee lying on his back on the ground with his eyes closed, as officials crowded around him and one pressed a cloth against his neck.

Democratic Party party spokesman Kwon Chil-seung said the politician was being flown to Seoul National University in the capital, after receiving emergency treatment at Pusan National University Hospital.

Medical staff at the latter hospital suspected damage to a jugular vein that carries blood from the head to the heart. “There is concern that there could be large haemorrhage or additional haemorrhage, according to medical staff,” Kwon said.

The attack, seen in video footage and photographs, unfolded while Lee was touring the site of a proposed airport in Busan.

The assailant, wearing a paper crown with Lee’s name on it, initially approached the politician asking for an autograph. He then attacked him with a weapon that was between 20 and 30cm (8 and 12 inches) long.

Arrested at the scene, the assailant has refused to answer police questions about his motives, according to daily Busan Ilbo.

Karti Chidambaram Questioned Again In Chinese Visa Money Laundering Case

Karti Chidambaram Questioned Again In Chinese Visa Money Laundering Case

Karti Chidambaram appeared before probe agency ED today for a fresh round of questioning

New Delhi:

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram appeared before the Enforcement Directorate today for a fresh round of questioning in a money laundering case linked to issuance of visas to some Chinese nationals in 2011, official sources said.

The 52-year-old legislator from Sivaganga Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu was questioned in this case on December 23 last year and the central agency recorded his statement under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

He again deposed before the investigating officer of the case at the ED headquarters in central Delhi, officials said.

The money laundering case, filed under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), stems from a CBI FIR.

The probe pertains to allegations of Rs 50 lakh being paid as kickbacks to Karti and his close associate S Bhaskararaman by a top executive of Vedanta group company Talwandi Sabo Power Ltd. (TSPL), which was setting up a power plant in Punjab, according to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR.

According to the CBI, the work for setting up the power project was being executed by a Chinese company and was running behind schedule.

A TSPL executive had sought re-issuance of project visas for 263 Chinese workers for which Rs 50 lakh allegedly exchanged hands, according to the CBI FIR.

The CBI had last year raided the premises of the Chidamabram family and arrested Bhaskararaman even as Karti was questioned by it.

Karti Chidambaram has earlier said that the ED probe was a “fishing and roving” enquiry and that he has submitted documents to the agency in the past. He had called the case “most bogus”, asserting he was “certain that he never facilitated even a single Chinese national in their visa process, let alone 250.”

He had said this case an attempt to target his father senior Congress leader P Chidambaram through him.

This is the third money laundering case against Karti Chidambaram with the INX Media and Aircel-Maxis cases being probed by the ED for some years now.

Congress seeks ECI appointment for INDIA bloc leaders delegation to discuss VVPAT issue

New Delhi: Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh wrote a letter to the Election Commission of India on Tuesday seeking an appointment to meet the delegation of INDIA bloc leaders to discuss the issue of Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT).

The letter stated, “…a request for an opportunity for a 3-4 member team of INDIA party leaders to meet with you and your colleagues and talk a few minutes to put forward our point of view on VVPATs. Surely, this is a perfectly reasonable and legitimate request.”

As stated in the letter, the INDIA parties’ delegation requested several times for a meeting to discuss Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) -related concerns through a memorandum. Referring to ECI’s clarification of the delegation’s memorandum as ‘generic’, the letter stated, “There was no meeting or hearing provided to the INDIA Parties’ delegation despite repeated requests.”

“On October 2, 2023, a follow-up representation was sent by us through counsel. The representation raised specific concerns which remained unaddressed in the ECI’s clarification of August 23, 2023. No response was received on the same,” the letter mentioned.

The letter added that the delegation sought an appointment again on December 20, 2023, to “discuss and provide suggestions on the use of VVPATs” based on a resolution passed at the meeting of leaders of INDIA parties held on December 19, 2023. “We have been trying to meet with the ECI to hand over a copy of this resolution and have a discussion but have not been successful so far in doing so,” the letter stated.

The fourth meeting of the Opposition’s INDIA bloc, held in Delhi on December 19, 2023, passed the resolution on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the suspension of MPs from Parliament.

“INDIA parties reiterate that there are many doubts about the integrity of the functioning of the EVMs. These have been raised by many experts and professionals as well. There is widespread demand for a return to the ballot paper system,” a statement of the bloc said after the meeting.

It suggested that “Instead of the VVPAT slip falling in the box, it should be handed over to the voter who shall then place it in a separate ballot box after having verified his or her choice. 100 per cent counting of VVPAT slips should then be done.” It further said that this will restore the full confidence of the people in free and fair elections.

"Death Of Test Cricket": Aus Great Warns ICC, BCCI On 'Irrelevant Legacy'

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh has raised concerns over the future of Test cricket after South Africa named a second-string squad for their upcoming Test tour of New Zealand. The Proteas will play two Tests against the Kiwis, with uncapped batter Niel Brand will lead the side consisting of just three players — Keegan Petersen, David Bedingham and Zubayr Hamza — from the ongoing home series against South Africa. The top South African cricketers are contracted to play in the second season of the SA20, the T20 league launched by CSA and Indian Premier League investors, which clashes with the tour.

According to a CSA ruling, no player contracted to SA20 franchises is eligible for selection for the Tests.

Taking to Instagram, Waugh has slammed the International Cricket Council and top cricket boards, including the BCCI, for not caring about Test cricket.

The 1999 World Cup-winning captain, Waugh, vouched for equal match fee for all Test players as a step towards securing the future of Test cricket.

“Is this a defining moment in the death of test cricket. Surely the ICC along the cricket boards of India , England and Australia must step in to protect the purest form of the game. A premium ,equal match fee for all test players might be a good starting point History and tradition must count for something. If we stand by and allow profits to be the defining criteria the legacy of Bradman , Grace and Sobers will be irrelevant,” Waugh posted on Instagram.

Despite having to travel with a makeshift squad, Proteas Test coach Shukri Conrad said he was confident that the team would be competitive.

“The players selected for this tour have every chance of challenging New Zealand,” said Conrad, who pointed out that most of the players had shown their ability while playing for South Africa A in recent series against West Indies A and India A.

Brand, 27, was born in Johannesburg but went to high school in England at King’s College, Taunton.

He has a solid first-class record with 2906 runs at an average of 39.27. He is also a capable left-arm orthodox spin bowler who has taken 72 wickets at an average of 30.81.

South African squad:

Neil Brand (capt), David Bedingham, Ruan de Swardt, Clyde Fortuin (wkt), Zubayr Hamza, Tshepo Moreki, Mihlali Mpongwana, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Raynard van Tonder, Shaun von Berg, Khaya Zondo.

Tsunami observed at S. Korea’s east coast after Japan’s massive earthquake

Between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday, tsunamis of a smaller scale were also observed along the east coast

Tsunami observed at S. Korea’s east coast after Japan’s massive earthquake

Seoul: A tsunami reaching as high as 85 cm was observed off South Korea’s east coast in the aftermath of a powerful magnitude-7.6 earthquake that struck Japan’s Noto Peninsula, the weather agency said on Tuesday.

At least 24 people have died after a series of quakes struck the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas in Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture on Monday, reportedly prompting thousands to evacuate.

A major tsunami warning was issued but was removed on Tuesday morning.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), about four hours after the quake, a tsunami wave, measured at 85 cm at its highest point, was observed off the port of Mukho in the eastern coastal city of Donghae, 182 km east of Seoul, at 8.35 p.m. on Monday night, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday, tsunamis of a smaller scale were also observed along the east coast, with the nearby cities of Sokcho and Samcheok experiencing waves as high as 45 cm and 33 cm, respectively.

The county of Uljin along the lower part of the east coast saw the tsunami waves rise as high as 66 cm, said the KMA.

Following the Monday quake, the first tsunami was observed off South Korea’s eastern coast in less than two hours, in the coastal city of Gangneung, where the waves were measured as high as 39 cm.

The KMA said tsunamis with waves lower than 10 cm had been surging toward the east coast as of 8 a.m. on Tuesday, adding that tsunamis were gradually ebbing but people on shore areas still have to take caution.

“If no stronger earthquake occurs, it is unlikely that tsunamis higher than those observed so far will come in,” a KMA official said.

It marks the first time South Korea has experienced a tsunami on its coasts since July of 1993, when a magnitude-7.8 earthquake off Japan’s Hokkaido sent tsunamis toward the country’s east coast measuring 2.76 meters at the highest point.
