'Deeply Shocked': 'RRR' Star Jr NTR Returns From Earthquake-Hit Japan

Jr NTR, who spent the last week in Japan, said he was “deeply shocked” by the earthquakes.

Hyderabad:

“RRR” star Jr NTR on Tuesday morning said he had returned from Japan and wished for its swift recovery after a series of powerful earthquakes hit the island country.

The quakes struck the western region of Japan, leaving at least eight people dead and damaging buildings, vehicles and boats, with officials warning people in some areas on Tuesday to stay away from their homes because of a risk of more strong quakes.

Jr NTR, who spent the last week in Japan, in a post on X said he was “deeply shocked” by the earthquakes in the country.

“Back home today from Japan and deeply shocked by the earthquakes hitting. Spent the entire last week there, and my heart goes out to everyone affected. Grateful for the resilience of the people and hoping for a swift recovery. Stay strong, Japan,” the actor wrote on the microblogging site.

“RRR”, a period action drama also starring Ram Charan, had emerged as the highest grossing Indian film upon its release in Japan in 2022. The SS Rajamouli directorial had raised over 410 million yen (Rs 24.13 crore approximately) at the Japanese box office.

On Monday, the quakes, the largest of which had a magnitude of 7.6, also started a fire and collapsed buildings on the west coast of Japan’s main island, Honshu, causing the country to drop its highest-level tsunami alert after issuing one following a series of major earthquakes.

Aftershocks continued to shake Ishikawa prefecture and nearby areas a day after a magnitude 7.6 temblor slammed the area on Monday afternoon.

Eight people were confirmed dead in Wajima city, officials said. Seven others were seriously injured, while damage to homes was so great that it could not immediately be assessed, they said.

Kyodo news agency reported at least 13 deaths had been confirmed.

Israel’s friends planning for post-Israel era: Iranian FM

During a briefing session on Sunday, Amir-Abdollahian provided members of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission with a comprehensive report on the latest developments in the region arising from the Israeli regime’s war of aggression against the Gaza Strip.

Zahra Elahian, a committee member, told IRNA that the foreign minister said the Al-Aqsa Storm operation, launched by the Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas on October 7, was a “turning point” for the Resistance front in the region.

“Today, the Zionist regime is in such a state that even its friends do not hold hope for it and are thinking about a post-Israel era,” Elahian quoted the top Iranian diplomat as saying.

The foreign minister also pointed out that the United States is currently facing unprecedented pressure at home and abroad over its support for the Israeli regime, she added.

Elahian said that Amir-Abdollahian also provided lawmakers with a detailed report on the ongoing diplomatic efforts to support the Palestinian people, including negotiations with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and Jordan.

US statesmen facing serious challenge regarding Gaza war

Speaking at a ceremony at Tehran University on Monday night, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that the Israeli regime is pursuing dreams that would not come true.

“They announced that they would quickly destroy Hamas, but this did not happen during this time. They announced that they would disarm Hamas through military, air, ground, and sea operations, but that did not happen,” he stressed, adding that the Zionists failed to advance their plans.

Today, the rulers of the occupying Zionist regime and the American statesmen who talked about the destruction of Hamas are sending messages to Hamas and negotiating with Hamas in third countries on how to control Gaza after the war and how to exchange Palestinian prisoners with Zionist prisoners, he further stressed.

“This shows that the resistance has moved in the right direction and the resistance has been able to bring a great victory,” he added.

Today, in our region, the culture of resistance and the concept of resistance are deeply intertwined with the concept of security, both at the national, regional, and global levels, Amir-Abdollahian said, emphasizing that the memory of martyr Soleimani will not be forgotten in the resistance culture.

Japan quake toll reaches 24, search on for survivors

Houses fallen by an earthquake are seen in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture, Japan Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.

Tokyo: The number of people who have died as a result of a series of strong earthquakes, with major ones measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, hit central Japan and the surrounding areas to 24 as search operations continued for survivors, authorities said on Tuesday.

On Monday, the earthquakes struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture at a shallow depth, reports Xinhua news agency. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has officially named it the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

Since Monday, Japan has been hit by at least 155 quakes. According to the Wajima city authority, the victims included a male teenager. A large-scale fire broke out around the famous tourist spot Wajima morning market, engulfing approximately 200 buildings. The city also experienced building collapses, with 14 cases of people being buried.

As more damage reports and information about people trapped continued to come in regarding other municipalities, injuries were reported in Niigata, Toyama, Fukui, and Gifu prefectures due to collapsed or damaged buildings.

Calling the rescue of those impacted by the earthquakes a battle against time,Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Tuesday said that the government has already dispatched a number of self-defense force troops to the impacted areas and will continue to provide assistance.

Meanwhile, all tsunami advisories in Japan have been removed, the JMA said in its latest update on Tuesday morning. Following the temblors, a major tsunami warning was issued by the Agency for the Noto region, urging people to evacuate immediately. Tsunami warnings were also in place for Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa prefectures.

The first waves reportedly hit the coast just over 10 minutes later after the earthquake struck. Tsunami waves of up to 4 feet hit a number of areas along the country’s western coast. Currently, some 45,700 households are without power in Ishikawa prefecture, according to the Hokuriku Electric Power company on Tuesday.

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said that four bullet trains, whose high-speed journeys were halted on Monday, have now resumed service to their destinations, reports CNN. The high-speed trains had been stranded between the central cities of Toyama and Kanazawa.

After being stationary for more than 11 hours, two trains arrived at the Toyama station at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, officials said.

Another two trains traveling in the opposite direction arrived at the Kanazawa station in Ishiwaka prefecture. Nearly 1,400 passengers had been stranded inside the high-speed trains, NHK said, citing Japan Railways West. Japan is one of the most seismically active nations on Earth, owing to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet.

The 9.0-magnitude earthquake which hit Japan in 2011 resulted in a tsunami – which tore through the country’s north-eastern coastal communities, killing almost 18,000 people and displacing tens of thousands. Those tsunami waves triggered a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima power plant, causing the most serious nuclear accident since Chernobyl.

Japan earthquake death toll rises to 24

According to emergency services, at least 50 more people suffered injuries of varying severity.

The most difficult situation is in Ishikawa Prefecture, which is closest to the epicenter of the ongoing earthquakes.

More than 200 houses are engulfed in fire there, over 100 residential buildings have collapsed, and people may be trapped under the rubble, TASS reported.

Rescuers and firefighters are working on the spot, and units of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces have been sent to the region to help eliminate the consequences of the tragedy.

Since Monday, more than 150 earthquakes of varying strength have occurred in Japan, the most powerful of which had a magnitude of 7.6. The tsunami threat for the entire western coast of the country remained for more than 20 hours. The earthquake was the most powerful to hit this part of Japan since 1885.

Mohamed Salah Sends Liverpool Three Points Clear Atop Premier League

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool stretched Newcastle’s miserable run with a 4-2 victory at Anfield to open up a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League on Monday. Jurgen Klopp’s team should have run out even more convincing winners as Martin Dubravka saved Salah’s first-half penalty among 10 stops. But Salah made amends from the spot after he, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo had netted in the second half to inflict a seventh defeat in eight games on Newcastle.

Liverpool head into the Premier League’s winter break five points clear of title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal, with Aston Villa posing an unexpected challenge in second place.

“A special game, special night,” said Klopp. “It was a sensational game from my team. We started extremely lively. Everyone saw Dubravka or we ourselves made sure the score didn’t get too clear.

“Super game. I loved so many aspects of the game bar the goals we conceded.”

Newcastle, by contrast, remain down in ninth and 11 points off the top four as the spotlight grows on Eddie Howe.

The Magpies have the second worst away record in the Premier League this season with just five points from 10 games.

Howe’s men were fortunate not to be blown away by an embarrassing scoreline in stormy conditions at Anfield as Liverpool registered the highest expected goals ever in a Premier League game of 7.53.

“We’re battling to get our best levels back. The effort and determination was there. As long as we continue to see that we’ll be fine,” said Howe.

“We’re missing a lot of players and we’ve had a lot of tough fixtures in a congested December.”

Dubravka denies Darwin

Dubravka has struggled to deputise for the sidelined Nick Pope as Newcastle’s form has slumped in recent weeks while battling an injury crisis.

But the Slovakian was in top form as he denied Darwin Nunez on a handful of ocassions.

Luis Diaz did have the ball in the net midway through the first half, but the goal was ruled out for offside against Nunez.

Diaz was then upended in the box by Sven Botman. But Dubravka bailed out the Dutch defender by denying Salah his 150th Premier League goal for Liverpool from the spot.

The Egyptian, who was playing in his final game before heading out to the African Cup of Nations, has now missed four of his last 10 spot-kicks for the Reds.

“I thought ‘are you going to be leave for the national team with that performance?'” said Salah of his first-half display.

“I just had to really focus, step up and make the difference and managed to do so.”

Finally Liverpool’s pressure told early in the second period as for once Nunez showed a cool head to pick out Salah for a tap in.

But completely against the run of play, Newcastle equalised just five minutes after falling behind.

Alexander Isak timed his run to perfection to latch onto Anthony Gordon’s through ball and the Swedish striker slotted confidently past the advancing Alisson Becker.

That shock did not change the course of the game as the one-way traffic towards the Newcastle goal continued.

Nunez’s night ended in frustration as another golden chance came and went with his final touch as he headed wide.

Klopp sent on Diogo Jota and Gakpo and they delivered what Nunez could not in front of goal.

Jota teed up Jones for a tap in before Gakpo’s scuffed finish from Salah’s cross wrong-footed Dubravka.

Botman’s header briefly brought Newcastle back within one goal.

But any hope of a remarkable fightback was extinguished in controversial fashion as Jota won a second penalty despite a delayed reaction to contact from Dubravka.

Klopp could not watch on the touchline, but this time his talisman did not disappoint to ensure the start to 2024 was a very happy new year for Liverpool.

Russia Rounds Up Migrants At New Year's Eve To "Prevent Crime": Report

Russia Rounds Up Migrants At New Year's Eve To 'Prevent Crime': Report

President Vladimir Putin said in December that Russia has more than 10 million labour migrants (File)

Moscow:

Russia’s police have detained thousands of migrants across the country in New Year’s Eve raids with scores of them facing deportation, Russian media reported on Monday.

About 3,000 migrants were detained in Russia’s second-largest city of St. Petersburg during checks “to prevent crime,” Russia’s RIA state news agency reported.

“As it turned out, more than 600 of the migrants have been in Russia with various violations of migration legislation,” RIA cited an unnamed law enforcement agency source as saying.

More than 100 people faced deportation, RIA added.

Russia’s SOTA online news outlet said a man from Tajikistan who was dressed as a Santa Claus was among migrants detained in Moscow.

In the west-central Russian city of Chelyabinsk, Russia’s top investigative organ, the Investigative Committee, said it was opening a criminal case against three migrants for an “act of hooliganism” against Russian servicemen and their wives.

“A crowd of drunken migrants attacked two young men demobilized from the front line, one soldier was hit with a baton,” the Committee said on the Telegram messaging app.

“It is also noted that the migrants insulted the wives of veterans of the special military operation.”

Russia calls the war it unleashed on Ukraine in February 2022 a “special military operation.”

The Committee said it also opened investigation into “illegal actions of migrants” in the Sverdlovsk region in Russia’s Ural mountains and in the Moscow region.

Many migrants predominantly from neighbouring Central Asian countries such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia, come to Russia in search of work.

President Vladimir Putin said in December that Russia has more than 10 million labour migrants.

“This is not an easy problem,” Putin said during his annual press conference.

Jagan Reddy's Sister YS Sharmila To Join Congress

Jagan Reddy's Sister To Join Congress, May Get Big Role In Andhra Pradesh

New Delhi:

YS Sharmila, founder president of YSR Telangana Party and sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, will be joining the Congress this week, sources have said. This comes shortly after the Congress swept the Assembly polls in Telangana, ending the Bharat Rashtra Samithi dominance in the state.

According to sources, the Congress leadership will give Ms Sharmila an important role in Andhra Pradesh ahead of the state polls next year, alongside the Lok Sabha election. The move, it is learnt, is aimed at reviving the Congress in Andhra Pradesh. The party hopes that those willing to leave YSRCP may now join the Congress at a time key opposition party Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is struggling to hold its influence.

Ms Sharmila first hit headlines back in 2012 when Telangana had not been carved out of Andhra Pradesh. Against the backdrop of the statehood movement gathering steam, her brother Jagan Mohan Reddy parted ways with the Congress and formed YSCRP. He was joined by 18 MLAs and a Congress MP resigned. This paved the way for several bypolls. With Mr Reddy in jail after being arrested on corruption charges, his mother YS Vijayamma and sister YS Sharmila led the campaign. The YSCRP swept the polls.

Nine years later, in 2021, Ms Sharmila said she had political differences with her brother. She also stressed that YSRCP has no presence in Telangana. In July that year, she announced the formation of the YSR Telangana Party and started campaigning against the erstwhile K Chandrashekar Rao-led government.

Earlier this year, Ms Sharmila had announced that she would not contest the Telangana election. She had then said that the Congress is well-placed to win the election and she did not want to undermine it.

According to Congress sources, the party’s voteshare in Andhra has dropped abysmally over the years and is now hovering around just 1 per cent. Ms Sharmila, on her part, has fallen out with her brother and is learnt to be facing a funds crunch to continue her party activities.

Congress leaders agree that there is hardly any time left to bring about a turnaround in the party’s Andhra fortunes. But the party hopes that giving Ms Sharmila a big role, such as the state Congress chief, may benefit the party at a time when it is gearing up for the all-out fight against the BJP.
