No evidence linking PM Modi, EAM Jaishankar to criminal activity in Canada

No evidence linking PM Modi, EAM Jaishankar to criminal activity in Canada

New Delhi: The Canadian government on Friday clarified formally the allegations linking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to criminal activities in Canada.

The statement emphasised that no evidence supports such claims and sought to dispel speculation surrounding the matter. The clarification came from Nathalie G. Drouin, Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council and National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Canadian Prime Minister.

“On October 14, because of a significant and ongoing threat to public safety, the RCMP and officials took the extraordinary step of making public accusations of serious criminal activity in Canada perpetrated by agents of the Government of India. The Government of Canada has not stated, nor is it aware of evidence, linking Prime Minister Modi, Minister Jaishankar, or NSA Doval to the serious criminal activity within Canada. Any suggestion to the contrary is both speculative and inaccurate,” the statement read.

This statement comes after heightened diplomatic tensions between India and Canada.

Earlier in October, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of conducting covert operations on Canadian soil, which he claimed posed significant risks to public safety.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), according to Trudeau, had gathered credible evidence implicating Indian agents in activities ranging from surveillance and coercion to involvement in serious crimes. Trudeau called these actions a violation of Canada’s sovereignty and demanded they cease immediately.

India, however, has consistently denied these allegations, describing the accusations as “absurd and baseless,” dismissing them as part of a deliberate strategy by Canada to discredit India. Recently, Ottawa’s proceedings before the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security on October 29, 2024, drew sharp criticism from New Delhi.

During the session, Canadian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, David Morrison reportedly made remarks implicating India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah in targeting pro-Khalistan activists in Canada.

India responded with a strong diplomatic protest. At a media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “We had summoned the representative of the Canadian High Commission yesterday. A diplomatic note was handed over in reference to the proceedings of the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security in Ottawa on October 29, 2024. It was conveyed in the note that the Government of India protests in the strongest terms to the absurd and baseless references made to the Union Home Minister of India before the Committee by Deputy Minister David Morrison.”

IPL 2025 Auction: Pant, Rahul, Iyer to push the bar high in Jeddah on opening day

With months of off-field strategy and rigorous scouting, it will all come down to pure business as 10 franchises would look to get the best possible squads for the 2025 season and beyond

IPL 2025 Auction: Pant, Rahul, Iyer to push the bar high in Jeddah on opening day

New Delhi: One of the gala events of the cricketing world – the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction – will take centre stage in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

With months of off-field strategy and rigorous scouting, it will all come down to pure business as 10 franchises would look to get the best possible squads for the 2025 season and beyond.

In all, 577 players including 367 Indians and 210 overseas will be testing their fate to fill the maximum of 204 slots (70 overseas) available for the upcoming season. Among Indian players, 48 are capped and the remaining are uncapped professionals while 197 capped overseas and 12 uncapped foreign players will be up for grabs.

This year, three players from Associate nations will also test their luck. The auction proceedings will kick off with the first set of marquee players featuring the likes of Indian stars Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer – all three of them led their respective teams last season but were not retained by their respective franchises – with a base price of Rs 2 crore.

It is anticipated that Pant could be one of the most expensive players in the tournament’s history with Delhi Capitals having the advantage of using the right-to-match card (RTM). The other set of marquee players includes Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj.

At the same time, Mitchell Starc, who received the highest-ever bid at an IPL auction, Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, David Miller and Kagiso Rabada are the five overseas players across two sets of marquee lists.

A total of 82 players (after the addition of Jofra Archer) have marked themselves under the top price bracket of Rs 2 crore and will hope to make the headline in the two-day mega event.

Among others, 27 players are in the Rs 1.5 crore, 18 in Rs 1.25 crore, 23 in Rs 1 crore, 92 in Rs 75 lakh, eight in Rs 50 lakh, five in Rs 40 lakh and 320 are in with Rs 30 lakh price tag After bringing down the curtain to his glorious red-ball career nearly three weeks before turning 42, England veteran pacer James Anderson took everyone by surprise as he registered himself at a base price of Rs 1.25 crore in search of his first-ever IPL franchise.

In contrast, Bihar’s 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi will head into the auction as the youngest player for this edition. The southpaw has played five first-class matches for his state and two Youth Test matches for India Under-19s, scoring a century against Australia Under-19s last month.

Among the uncapped Indian players, all eyes will be on Ashutosh Sharma, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Vaibhav Arora and Mahipal Lomror. Ashutosh and Mahipal impressed with their attacking stroke-making for Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru last year with the former having the advantage of bowling left-arm spin.

Delhi batter Angkrish has a solid chance to get a contract for the second consecutive season after showing a glimpse of his talent for title-winner Kolkata Knight Riders. At just 19, the top-order batter has the potential to further nurture his skills by sharing a dressing room with international stars and become a vital member of the franchise.

Angkrish’s former KKR teammate Vaibhav Arora is another such candidate to fly high in the auction after a stellar season including 11 wickets in 10 matches. He proved himself as a reliable pace-bowling option in the powerplay by hitting the hard-lengths with the new ball.

He is likely to be one of the hottest picks among franchises looking to add a domestic pacer to the squad. Slots and purse available for each franchise: Punjab Kings will have the maximum purse of Rs 110.5 crore to fill 23 spots in their squad after another disastrous season for the franchise.

Chennai Super Kings (Rs 55 crore), Gujarat Titans (Rs 69 crore), Lucknow Super Giants (Rs 69 crore), Mumbai Indians (Rs 45 crore) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (Rs 45 crore) will each have a maximum of 20 spots available to complete their squads.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Rs 83 crore) and Delhi Capitals (Rs 73 crore) will eye to add 22 and 21 players to their portfolios while Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 51 crore) and Rajasthan Royals (Rs 41 crore) will have 19 slots available to frame their squads.

Mumbai: The rupee stayed in a straightjacket for yet another week, trading at its near all-time low of 84.07 against the US dollar on Friday amid firm American currency and unprecedented foreign fund outflow.

Forex traders said, the indication of some recovery in domestic equity markets prevented the fall in the local unit.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the local currency opened at 84.07 against the greenback, trading flat at previous day’s closing level in initial deals.

On Thursday, the rupee had settled flat at 84.07 against the US dollar.

The local currency has been struggling to recover since October 11, when it closed at its lowest level of 84.10 against the dollar.

Analysts said the selling rush by foreign investors in pursuit of better gains from the Chinese market has been preventing the rupee’s recovery, while higher US treasury yields have triggered the fear of slower interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve.

Also, uncertain geopolitical scenario ahead of the US presidential election steered investors towards safe-haven bets, they added.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was higher by 0.03 per cent at 103.95.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, climbed 0.24 per cent to $74.56 per barrel in futures trade.

On the domestic equity market front, Sensex rose 44.38 points, or 0.06 per cent, to 80,109.54 points. The Nifty inched up 27.35 points, or 0.11 per cent, to 24,426.75 points. Both the indices closed lower on Thursday, extending their slide for the fourth straight session.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Thursday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 5,062.45 crore, according to exchange data.

Gambhir's Coaching Record Receives Big Verdict From Ex-India Star: "Unfair…"

Former India middle-order batter Ajay Jadeja on Saturday defended head coach Gautam Gambhir from the criticism he has received following the 0-3 drubbing against New Zealand, saying it’s “unfair” given the short time he has been in the new role. Gambhir, the hero of the 2011 World Cup title triumph, took over the reins of the India team in July after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended. Following a bright start against Sri Lanka in the T20I series, India lost the ODI series to the home side. The Test team then thrashed Bangladesh 2-0 before a nightmare outing against New Zealand put Gambhir under massive scrutiny.

“I think you are being unfair to him… If you will start judging people on the basis of their coaching role or whatever way it is being looked at, it is too short a time to for people to be judged,” Jadeja told PTI Videos in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of FICCI Turf event on Saturday..

“If you are not convinced that he is good, then one performance here or there will be able to convince anyone. I don’t think it is the time to judge him, it is the time we should enjoy him,” added Jadeja, known for his exploits in the 50-over game where he scored over 5000 runs in 196 ODIs.

India’s massive 295-run win against Australia in the first Border-Gavaskar Test at Perth following the no-show against the Kiwis has come as a huge morale-booster for the side and Jadeja felt Gambhir should not be judged within six months of his appointment.

“So, there are phases and it will come, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. So, I won’t go into that direction and start judging him (Gambhir) in six months.

“You knew what you were asking for and what you were getting. He is a very clear-cut person and he has made it clear throughout his life. So, what your are seeing now is what everyone expected of him to do.” Jadeja said that regular Test skipper Rohit Sharma’s return for the second Test at Adelaide from December 6 after missing the opening game will boost India’s confidence.

“Him (Rohit Sharma) coming back to the team will surely boost India’s confidence, for sure. He is a leader, when the chips were down, team was going down, he stood up there as the leader and now when the team is going up, he will be again there as the leader.”

Asked whether KL Rahul and Rohit should swap batting slots in the second Test after the former had a formidable outing in the Perth game, Jadeja said, “I have no details of what the team is thinking right now, no views on who should bat at what number. Rohit Sharma has always been an asset to the side wherever he bats.”

Opening the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul scored 77 in the second innings at Perth, helping India to set a massive 534-run target. Some experts have opined that Rahul should open in the Adelaide Test as well, while Rohit should in at one-down.

Iran’s exports to Eurasia grow by 2.5 times in four years

Under the administration of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran’s foreign policy has further prioritized strengthening relations with Eurasian countries to access global markets.

According to Mohammad-Ali Dehghan Dehnavi, head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO), Iran’s decision four years ago to enter into free trade with Eurasia has led to a significant reduction in tariffs. Since then, trade with member countries of the EAEU has risen by 2.5 times.

The free trade agreement between the EAEU and Iran was signed on December 25, 2023, in St. Petersburg, Russia. This agreement aims to reduce or eliminate tariff and non-tariff barriers while supporting economic and trade interactions. Following the signing of the final document of the free trade agreement, 87% of the tariff codes for commercial goods between Iran and the EAEU will be reduced to zero.

The Eurasian Economic Union held its annual meeting on September 30 and October 1 in Yerevan, Armenia, with a high-level delegation from Iran representing both the public and private sectors. During the meeting, Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref emphasized that Iran is committed to expanding economic relations at both bilateral and multilateral levels with EAEU member states.

Figures from Iran’s Customs Administration show that exports to EAEU member countries saw 16% increase in the first five months of the current calendar year (March 20 to August 20). The volume of exports to these countries reached 2.2 million metric tons, a 35% growth compared to the same period in the previous year.

Syrian army says prepping for major counteroffensive in Aleppo

The Syrian military says its forces have undertaken a redeployment operation in the northwestern city of Aleppo as part of preparations for a major counteroffensive against foreign-sponsored Takfiri terrorists who have launched a surprise offensive on government-held positions.

“The large numbers of terrorists and the multiplicity of battlefronts prompted our armed forces to carry out a redeployment operation aimed at strengthening the defense lines in order to absorb the attack, preserve the lives of civilians and soldiers, and prepare for a counterattack,” the army said in a statement on Saturday.

The statement added that Takfiri militants had not been able to establish fixed positions in Aleppo city due to the army’s continued bombardment of their positions.

The army promised to “expel them and restore the control of the state … over the entire city and its countryside.”

The Syrian military had earlier stated it had inflicted heavy losses on foreign-backed terrorists led by the Hay’at Tahrir al-Shams (HTS) Takfiri group in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib over the previous few days.

According to three military sources cited by the Reuters news agency, Syrian authorities closed Aleppo airport and canceled all flights on Saturday.

The pro-government al-Watan daily newspaper reported airstrikes on the edge of Aleppo city targeting the supply lines of terrorists.

It posted a video of a missile landing on a gathering of militants and vehicles, in a street lined with trees and buildings.

Twenty militants were killed in the airstrikes, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Aleppo residents also reported fierce clashes between terrorists and government forces. Some fled the fighting to save their lives.

While bakeries were open on Saturday, schools and government offices were closed, according to Sham FM radio station, as most people stayed indoors.

HTS-led terrorists carried out a surprise assault in the Aleppo and Idlib countryside on Wednesday and overran a number of villages and towns before entering Aleppo on Friday.

On Friday, Syrian state television said Russia was providing the Arab nation’s military with air support.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011, with Damascus saying the Western states and their regional allies are aiding terrorist groups to wreak havoc in the Arab country.

Terror outfits are seeking to hinder the Syrian government’s efforts aimed at consolidating security and stability in the country, which is also under the Israeli regime’s regular aggression.

Israel has been the principal supporter of terrorist groups that oppose the democratically-elected government of President Bashar al-Assad since the foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria in March 2011.

‘Take it down immediately’: Sunil Gavaskar warns of legal action over fake article

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar

New Delhi: Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has strongly denied writing an article attributed to him on a cricket website and has threatened legal action against those responsible.

The website, Cricket Ception, published a column on Friday evening titled “A New Era in Leadership: Bumrah’s Captaincy and Kohli’s Leadership Revive Team India,” falsely claiming it was written by the former captain.

Gavaskar addressed the issue on Instagram on Saturday, sharing a video where he clarified that he had no connection with the article and demanded its immediate removal.

The cricket legend also asked the website to issue a public apology, warning that failure to comply would lead to legal action.

In the video, Gavaskar stated: “Hi, this is Sunil Gavaskar, and I want to say that there is a website, Cricket Ception, which has printed an article under my name. I have to say that it is completely fake. I have not contributed that at all, and I want to tell that website to take it down immediately. Issue an apology. If you don’t do that, I will give the matter to my legal team. So don’t believe a word of what you’ve read. This is a completely fake article attributed to me.”

Gavaskar also urged fans to be cautious about misinformation online, writing, “Never believe everything you see on the Internet #alwaysverify” in the caption of his Instagram post.

The controversy arose during the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Perth Stadium, where India delivered a dominant performance under stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah.

Leading from the front, Bumrah picked a dazzling 5-30 as India stretched their to over 100 at tea on day two of the first Test after bowling out Australia for 104. It was also the third-lowest score for Australia in Tests at home since 2000.

Cryptocurrencies huge risks to financial stability: RBI Governor-Telangana Today

Cryptocurrencies huge risks to financial stability: RBI Governor

File Photo

Washington: Cryptocurrencies are huge risks to financial stability and monetary stability, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shantikanta Das said on Friday, asserting that it may create a situation where the central bank may lose control of money supply in the economy.

“I am actually of the opinion that this is something which should not be allowed to dominate the financial system. Because it has huge financial stability risks, it has huge monetary stability risks, it also poses risks to the banking system. It also may create a situation where the central bank may lose control of money supply in the economy,” RBI Governor Shantikanta Das said during his appearance at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a think-tank.

“If the central bank loses control of money supply in the economy, how does it check liquidity available in the system? How does a central bank control inflation by squeezing money supply or by losing money supply in times of crisis? So, we see crypto as a big risk, and there has to be an international understanding because the transactions are cross-country,” he said in response to a question.

“There has to be (an) international understanding on this issue, being fully mindful of the huge risks associated with cryptocurrencies. It is not something which I feel it’s not something which should be encouraged. This view is not a very popular view, but I think as custodians of financial stability, it is a major concern for central banks world over. Governments are also becoming increasingly aware of the possible downside risks in cryptocurrencies,” Das said.

India, he said, was the first country to raise questions about cryptocurrencies. In the G20 under the Indian presidency, there was an agreement to develop an international understanding with regard to how to deal with this whole crypto ecosystem. Some progress has been made in this regard, he added.

“I think more work still needs to be done. From India, from the Reserve Bank’s perspective, I think we are one of the first central banks which very clearly voiced its serious concerns about the so-called cryptocurrencies. We see them as big risks, huge risks to financial stability. There are good reasons why we are saying that,” he said.

“First, we have to understand the origin of cryptocurrencies. The origin was to bypass the system. Cryptocurrencies have all the qualities of money. The fundamental question is, are we as authorities, are governments comfortable with privately issued cryptocurrencies which have all the features of currency issuance. Currency issuance is a function, a sovereign function. So the bigger question, larger question is whether we are comfortable with crypto, which has characteristics of being a currency, or whether we are comfortable with having a private currency system in parallel to the fiat currency,” he added.

“Obviously, if a certain part of your economy is getting carved out and it is dominated by the crypto assets or the private crypto assets, then the central bank loses control over the entire monetary system. So therefore, it will lead to a huge amount of instability in the monetary system. It can also promote a huge amount of instability in the financial sector. So there are very big risks,” he said.

“So therefore, in India, we have been articulating that we have to deal with this very carefully. In fact, we have articulated that countries of course, it will depend on individual countries taking their own decisions. But we feel that it has to be very strong, it is something which I think should be very cautiously and very carefully dealt with,” Das said.
