Watch: Fuel spill on Kushaiguda-Nagaram road in Hyderabad turns dangerous for motorists

Hyderabad: A fuel spill, reportedly from an oil tanker, on the Kushaiguda – Nagaram road on Saturday turned dangerous for several motorists, especially two-wheelers.

Nearly 25 two-wheelers skidded and fell resulting in minor injuries to few people. No major accidents were reported.

According to sources, the fuel tanker which came from ECIL towards Keesara, due to unknown reason, spilled some fuel on the busy road.

Though it was noticed immediately, and the DRF team from GHMC and local police reached, few motorists had fallen by then.

On being alerted by motorists, Kushaiguda police rushed to the spot and diverted the traffic and spread sand and sawdust over the fuel. Normal traffic resumed later.

The Kushaiguda police said the vehicle from which the fuel spilled was yet to be identified. No case was booked.

Iran: US-Zionist plot in Syria aims to destabilize West Asia

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the resurgence of Takfiri terrorism in northern Syria is part of an American-Israeli project that aims to spread insecurity in the West Asia region.

In a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday, Araghchi said the international community bears responsibility for combating the vicious scourge of terrorism.

He added that Iran, Russia and regional countries, particularly Syria’s neighboring states, must maintain vigilance and improve coordination to “thwart this dangerous plot and counter terrorists’ measures in Syria.”

The Russian foreign minister, for his part, briefed his Iranian counterpart on his assessment of the latest developments in Syria.

Lavrov called on all sides to take more coordinated steps to combat terrorism and urged close consultations between Tehran and Moscow.

The top Iranian and Russian diplomats reaffirmed their countries’ firm support for Syria’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as the Arab country’s government and army in their fight against terrorist groups.

Araghchi and Lavrov stressed the importance of pursuing the issue within the framework of the Astana talks and emphasized that Iran, Russia and Turkey are required to hold more coordination as the guarantors of the Astana peace process.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allied terrorist factions advanced into sections of Syria’s second-largest city of Aleppo on Friday, seizing areas including al-Hamdaniyah, al-Furqan, and al-Zahraa after two days of heavy clashes, according to local sources. However, Syrian forces quickly launched counter-operations to repel them.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based monitor, said Russian warplanes had launched raids on areas of Aleppo city for the first time since 2016 to stop terrorist advances.

Local media said on Saturday that the Syrian Army forces continue to repel attacks by foreign-backed terrorist groups in the country’s northwestern areas.

The Syrian military, backed by Russian air power, launched retaliatory strikes against terrorist positions on the outskirts of Aleppo and the eastern countryside of Idlib.

All set for IPL auction, Pant and Arshdeep likely to break the bank

There will be INR 641.5 crore cumulatively in kitty of 10 teams with 204 possible slots to be filled but one can be rest assured that all eyes will be trained on Pant’s name when it comes up

All set for IPL auction, Pant and Arshdeep likely to break the bank

Rishabh Pant and Arshdeep Singh

Jeddah: The bids on Rishabh Pant could well soar like his audacious no-look six at Perth as he seems poised to become the highest paid player among the 577 who will go under the hammer at the two-day IPL mega auction starting here on Sunday.

There will be INR 641.5 crore cumulatively in the kitty of 10 teams with 204 possible slots to be filled but one can be rest assured that all eyes will be trained on Pant’s name when it comes up.

Punjab Kings, with INR 110.50 crore in their coffers, are ready to outbid the other franchises. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with INR 83 crore, can be another serious bidder, so can be Delhi Capitals, who have INR 73 crore and a Right To Match (RTM) card to get their skipper for past few seasons back.

However, it is reliably learnt that Pant doesn’t want DC to flash the RTM card as their parting of ways has not been the most pleasant and he no longer feels a part of the franchise. His comment that “my Retention wasn’t about money for sure” is a reflection of his thought process.

But the biggest question will be whether Pant can become the first Indian player to breach the INR Rs 25 crore mark? The answer lies in how the 10 franchises are stacked up and how they are looking at their team composition. A Chennai Super Kings (CSK) or Mumbai Indians (MI), with only Rs 45 crore, wouldn’t even be going for the star keeper-batter.

But Punjab Kings, known for changing their team every two years, have kept their entire purse on advice of their head coach Ricky Ponting, who wants to reunite with his favourite player. There are 81 players bracketed in INR two crore category base price and two sets of marquee players but one can trust the current India internationals to breach the million dollar mark (INR 8.5 crore).

If Pant would be the cynosure of this auction, Arshdeep Singh, with a staggering 96 T20 International wickets in three seasons, can easily have multiple teams going for him. Punjab has the RTM card but they wouldn’t know where the bidding stops as it could be north of Rs 20 crore.

Fast bowlers — both Indian and foreign — will be in high demand during the two days while in case of batters, most of the star Indians save Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are taken. Iyer is believed to be Delhi Capitals’ choice for captaincy.

Pant, Rahul and Iyer are three potential captains as RCB, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are also going to shop for possible leaders. Among Indians, Ishan Kishan will keep the auctioneer busy although MI might not be in a position to shell out Rs 15.25 crore like last time as they need some good bowling support for Bumrah.

The other interesting name would be Mohammed Shami, who Sanjay Manjrekar thinks won’t attract too many bidders, something the player didn’t take too kindly to. He is playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and how his bidding goes would be noteworthy.

Other names to watch out:
Khaleel Ahmed: Those who won’t be able to get Arshdeep can go whole hog for Khaleel. Since Yash Dayal has also been retained by RCB, Khaleel could end up getting handsome bids. He hasn’t exactly shown his potential over the years but it is the demand-supply equation that can get him a million dollar deal.

Deepak Chahar: Injuries have pegged him back in past few years but there is no better swing bowler in Powerplay overs in Indian conditions like Chahar. Multiple franchises could bid for him. He has played Ranji Trophy and picked up a five-for and has not been unfit so far.

Avesh Khan: He had 19 wickets last season for Rajasthan Royals and went for Rs 10 crore. He might once again fetch a bid as good as that if not better.

Harshal Patel: It is that time of the year when people are left stunned as Harshal’s name comes up and he walks away with a million dollar contract. He will once again be a hot property even though he is no longer considered good for national selection. But 24 wickets last season mean that he won’t be ignored.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Indian seam and swing bowlers controlling powerplay overs are a rare commodity and experience isn’t readily available in the Supermarket. He might not grab eyeballs but if he remains under Rs 10 crore, he could still be a bargain buy and world knows MS Dhoni (CSK’s ‘Real Captain’) likes experienced blokes around him.

Jos Buttler: It is unlikely that Yashasvi Jaiswal will get to pair up with his favourite ‘Jos Bhai’ but the Englishman, in the absence of Ben Stokes, could well be the highest paid foreign player. It won’t be a surprise if RCB, factoring in the batting paradise at Chinnaswamy and the short side boundaries, go the distance for him with INR 83 crore in kitty.

Liam Livingstone: Livingstone is one player, who could certainly be on Punjab Kings’ RTM radar as well as on wish-list of some of the other franchises. He will certainly fetch a good sum.

Kagiso Rabada: Kagiso Rabada will always be in high demand in the IPL Universe. The Delhi Capitals could once again want the pacer back and Punjab would have the option of RTM. Mumbai Indians wouldn’t mind a good pace partner for Bumrah.

LinkedIn fined $335 million for privacy violations in ad tracking

London: Microsoft-owned professional networking platform LinkedIn was on Thursday fined 310 million euros (around $335 million) for privacy violations related to its tracking ads business.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (IDPC) issued the under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The inquiry examined LinkedIn’s processing of personal data for the purposes of behavioural analysis and targeted advertising of users who have created LinkedIn profiles.

The decision, made by the Commissioners for Data Protection, Dr Des Hogan and Dale Sunderland, concerns the lawfulness, fairness and transparency of this processing.

The decision includes a reprimand, an order for LinkedIn to bring its processing into compliance, and administrative fines totalling 310 million euros, the Irish regulator said in a statement.

DPC Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle commented that the lawfulness of processing is a fundamental aspect of data protection law and the processing of personal data without an appropriate legal basis is a clear and serious violation of a data subjects’ fundamental right to data protection.

The networking platform had sought to claim (variously) “consent”, “legitimate interests” and “contractual necessity” based legal bases for processing people’s information — when obtained directly and/or from third parties — to track and profile its users for behavioural advertising.

However, the DPC found none were valid. LinkedIn also failed to comply with the GDPR principles of transparency and fairness.

In a statement, LinkedIn said that the IDPC reached a final decision on claims from 2018 about “some of our digital advertising efforts in the EU”.

“While we believe we have been in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we are working to ensure our ad practices meet this decision by the IDPC’s deadline,” the company said.

Man throws liquid on Kejriwal during rally, detained; AAP points finger at BJP

AAP lashed out at the BJP-led Centre for the incident and said this is the third “attack” on Kejriwal in the last 35 days.

Man throws liquid on Kejriwal during rally, detained; AAP points finger at BJP

Former Delhi chief minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal reacts after a man allegedly splashed some liquid on the former during his padyatra, in New Delhi, Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024. Kejriwal was greeting people standing behind a cordon when the man approached him and splashed the liquid on him, following which the security personnel swiftly overpowered him.

New Delhi: In a security scare, a man splashed some liquid on Arvind Kejriwal during his ‘padyatra’ in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Saturday, with AAP claiming that it was spirit and the “attacker” wanted to set the party supremo afire.

While police said water was thrown at Kejriwal during the public event that was organised without their permission, the BJP strongly refuted Chief Minister Atishi’s accusation that the accused was a worker of the saffron party.

AAP lashed out at the BJP-led Centre for the incident and said this is the third “attack” on Kejriwal in the last 35 days.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Ashok Jha, a serving bus marshal at Delhi Transport Corporation’s Khanpur Depot, has been detained.

“Further examination of the person is in progress to find out the reasons behind this act,” a statement from the Delhi Police stated.

Sources claimed that Jha (41), during interrogation, said that he was frustrated as he was not getting his salary for the past six months.

Jha claimed that during the formation of AAP, he gave a donation to the party, but was upset with its “fake promises”, the sources said.

The AAP national convener was holding the padayatra in the Savitri Nagar area that falls under the Greater Kailash assembly segment.

Police said that around 5.50 pm Kejriwal was shaking hands with some followers standing behind a cordon when Jha attempted to throw water on him. He was immediately caught as the police staff were nearby, they said.

Kejriwal and the security personnel accompanying him were later seen wiping their faces.

Proper police deployment, both in plain clothes along with rope party for crowd control and in uniform, was made, the statement said.

At a press conference, Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that the man held for attacking Kejriwal had a matchbox in his hand. He claimed the liquid that fell on Kejriwal and him was spirit as they could smell it and an attempt was made to “burn him (Kejriwal) alive”. “A man threw spirit on him. We could smell it and there was an attempt to burn him (Kejriwal) alive. The man was carrying spirit in one hand and a matchbox in the other hand. He threw spirit that fell on Kejriwal and me… but he could not start the fire. Our alert volunteers and the public caught him,” he claimed.

In a post on X, Bharadwaj also alleged that the attacker was connected with the BJP. After the incident, Kejriwal targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying he should try to stop crime in Delhi instead of stalling his march.

“Will crime in Delhi reduce if you stop me? Will shoot-outs in Delhi spot… will women and businessmen become safe…,” he said on X.

Chief Minister Atishi alleged that a BJP worker attacked Kejriwal and claimed the saffron party seems to be frustrated after losing the Delhi elections for a third time.

“Today, in broad daylight, a BJP worker attacked @ArvindKejriwal ji. BJP is seen to be frustrated after losing the Delhi elections for the third time. BJP people, the public in Delhi will take revenge for such cheap acts. Last time, the BJP got eight seats, this time Delhi people will give BJP zero seats,” she said in a post on X.

AAP had earlier alleged that some “BJP goons” tried to attack Kejriwal during his padyatra in Vikaspuri in October.

“Delhi is facing a complete breakdown of law and order under the BJP’s rule,” it said, adding that if the former chief minister is not safe in the national capital, where will the common man go? The Delhi Police comes under the purview of the Union home ministry.

The BJP strongly refuted the AAP’s accusations.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said the incident of throwing “water” on Kejriwal was an old tactic of the AAP. “Delhiites are asking why such incidents happen with him only”, he said.

Party spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said the BJP condemns any kind of violence. But as Delhi BJP chief earlier pointed out, a “demoralised” Kejriwal could plan something like this to claim an attack on him and that suspicion has now been proved, he said.

AAP leaders hit out at the BJP for the incident.

Its Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha said that Kejriwal raised his voice against the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Delhi on Friday, and he faced the “cowardly” attack the next day.

“This is highly condemnable. There is no place for violence in democratic politics. Arvind Kejriwal has the blessings of crores of people,” he said.

Delhi AAP MLA Naresh Yadav gets 2-year sentence in 2016 desecration case

Chandigarh: A court in Punjab’s Malerkotla district on Saturday awarded a two-year sentence to AAP MLA from Delhi’s Mehrauli Naresh Yadav in a 2016 case of desecration of the Quran. The court of additional district and sessions judge Parminder Singh Grewal convicted Yadav in the case on Friday and pronounced the verdict on Saturday.

A fine of Rs 11,000 was also imposed on Yadav who appeared before the court when the sentence was pronounced.

The court upheld the two-year sentence of two others — Vijay Kumar and Gaurav Kumar — and acquittal of another accused Nand Kishore by a lower court.

Yadav has been convicted under Sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

Yadav was acquitted in the sacrilege case in March 2021 by a lower court. However, complainant Mohammad Ashraf filed an appeal against his acquittal.

On June 24, 2016, torn pages of the Quran were found scattered on a road in Malerkotla. This led to violence and burning of vehicles by an angry mob. Four persons, including the AAP MLA, were arrested in the case.

Initially, the police had booked Vijay, Gaurav and Kishore. Later, AAP MLA Yadav was arrested in the case.

Perth: India on Saturday took control of the opening Test against Australia, thanks to Jasprit Bumrah‘s five-wicket haul which had the hosts shot out for 104. Meanwhile, Indian openers’ — Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul — solid start help team extend the lead to 130 runs by tea.

Building on the 46-run first-innings lead, Rahul (34 batting, 70 balls) again displayed good technique while Jaiswal (42 batting, 88 balls) also showed that he had learnt his lessons from the first innings during their unbroken opening stand of 84 runs.

Rahul’s on-drive off Pat Cummins can easily be called the shot of the match but it was heartening to see Jaiswal put in a big stride forward while driving Mitchell Starc through covers apart from getting under the bounce and playing the ramp shot.

Jaiswal curbed his urge to drive on the up initially and that was the best part about his batting. Once he had defended enough deliveries, the Australian pacers didn’t have any option but to try either short or full length which he utilised well.

The whip over midwicket to hit Starc for one-bounce four and then induce a grin from the pacer by telling him “You are slow” spoke volumes about how fearless the current generation of Indian cricketers is.

In the case of Rahul, he kept a very loose bottom-hand and that helped with the deliveries, even the ones that took the thickish edge only to fall way in front of the slip cordon.

Unlike times when he has had issues, Rahul didn’t do a front-foot press across the off-stump and his trigger movement was late allowing him to switch on front and backfoot easily.

In the morning, India captain Bumrah deservedly got his 11th five-wicket haul while debutant Harshit Rana bowled a fiery opening spell to dismiss the hosts for 104 at the stroke of lunch despite a stiff last-wicket resistance from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

The Indian team would be a touch disappointed that they couldn’t get a handy lead, which seemed to be on the cards once Australia were reduced to 79 for 9. But Starc (26 off 113 balls) shielded Hazlewood (7 not out off 31 balls) admirably during their 25-run last-wicket stand that lasted 18 overs and got the lead below 50 (46 runs), making it a contest of who bats better in the second innings.

The day began on a bright note as Bumrah (5/30 in 18 overs), bowling the second over of the day, got one to rear up from back of the length and Carey’s edge carried at a good height to Rishabh Pant behind stumps. The skipper’s celebration was understated as he purposefully strode back to his bowling mark even before Nathan Lyon had arrived.

Markets skid after early trade rally

Mumbai: Stock markets gave up early gains and were trading lower on Friday amid sharp fall in IndusInd Bank shares and relentless foreign fund outflows.

The BSE Sensex climbed 130.56 points to 80,195.72 in early trade. The NSE Nifty went up by 36.9 points to 24,436.30.

However, the selling pressure soon dragged both the indices down. The BSE benchmark traded 197.47 points lower at 79,875.03 and the Nifty quoted with a cut of 89.20 points at 24,310.20.

From the 30 Sensex pack, IndusInd Bank plunged 15 per cent after the firm reported a 40 per cent decline in September quarter net profit at Rs 1,331 crore, pulled down majorly by concerns on asset quality.

NTPC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Steel, and JSW Steel were also among the laggards.

From the blue-chip pack, ITC jumped over 3 per cent after the diversified entity reported an 1.8 per cent increase in its consolidated net profit to Rs 5,054.43 crore in the second quarter ended September 2024. ITC’s revenue from operations jumped 15.62 per cent to Rs 22,281.89 crore during the July-September period.

Axis Bank, Asian Paints, HCL Technologies, ICICI Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the other big gainers.

In Asian markets, Seoul, Shanghai and Hong Kong traded higher while Tokyo quoted lower.

The US markets ended mostly higher on Thursday.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 5,062.45 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought Rs 3,620.47 crore shares.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.24 per cent to $74.56 a barrel.

In an uninspiring trade, the BSE benchmark dipped 16.82 points or 0.02 per cent to settle at 80,065.16 on Thursday. The Nifty skidded 36.10 points or 0.15 per cent to 24,399.40 in a volatile trade.

New Delhi chokes under toxic smog as air quality remains at hazardous levels

Residents of India’s capital, New Delhi, found themselves surrounded by a blanket of smog on Friday as the air quality plunged to “hazardous” levels.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) figure, as reported by the Swiss group IQAir at 0100GMT, stood at a “hazardous” 545.

IQAir had previously named New Delhi the world’s most polluted capital just last year.

Local resident Nitin lamented the dire situation, saying masks were necessary when leaving the house and the air quality meant his elderly parents were housebound and his children’s schools were shut.

The toxic smog has left many suffering from burning sensations in their eyes, sore throats, and shortness of breath.

Despite the implementation of anti-pollution measures, the capital struggles to rein in its escalating pollution crisis.

Each winter, the city grapples with smog – a lethal cocktail of smoke and fog – as cold air traps dust, emissions, and smoke from unauthorized agricultural fires.
