Islamabad: Supporters seeking the release of imprisoned Pakistani former premier Imran Khan on Tuesday broke through a ring of shipping containers locking down the capital Islamabad, battled police, and ignored a government threat to respond with gunfire. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowds and at least one person has died in clashes.

Scores more have been injured, including journalists who were attacked by Khan supporters. Dozens of Khan supporters beat a videographer covering the protest and broke his camera. He sustained head injuries and was being treated in a hospital.

Shortly after midnight, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had threatened protesters that police would respond with live fire if protesters fired weapons at them. “If they again fire bullets, the bullet will be responded with the bullet.” he said. Khan, who has been in jail for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases, remains popular.

His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or PTI, says the cases are politically motivated. Authorities say only courts can order the release of Khan, who was ousted in 2022 through a no-confidence vote in Parliament. He has been imprisoned since his first conviction in a graft case, in August 2023, and has been sentenced in several cases. Khan’s supporters were around 10 km (6.2 miles) from their destination, the city’s Red Zone that houses key government buildings.

Naqvi said Khan’s party rejected a government offer to rally on the outskirts of the city. In a bid to foil the protest, police have arrested more than 4,000 Khan supporters since Friday and suspended mobile and internet services in some parts of the country.

On Thursday, a court prohibited rallies in the capital and Naqvi said anyone violating the ban would be arrested. Travel between Islamabad and other cities has become nearly impossible because of shipping containers blocking the roads. All educational institutions remain closed.

Terrorists claim capturing Khan Tuman in Syria

Elnashra, quoting sources affiliated with the Syrian opposition, reported that terrorists had taken control of Khan Tuman and Zitan towns on the southern outskirts of Aleppo.

On the other hand, the terrorists have claimed to have captured a scientific research center in the west of Aleppo.

This claim comes as Sputnik announced that the Syrian army has started a heavy counteroffensive on the outskirts of Aleppo and Idlib towards the areas that the terrorists have taken control of in the last two days.

Over 400 Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists were killed in Syria’s Aleppo and Idlib in the past day, Captain 1st rank Oleg Ignasyuk, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties in Syria, said earlier on Friday.

Bumrah dismisses in-form Head, India need two more wickets to win Perth Test

Perth: India stood on the cusp of their biggest victory on Australian soil after reducing the hosts to 227 for 8 at tea on day four of the first Test here on Monday.

Skipper Jasprit Bumrah (3/42) and Mohammed Siraj (3/54) did most of the damage on the fourth day while Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy played the support act to perfection with a wicket apiece. India had set Australia a mammoth 534-run target on day three.

The in-form Travis Head (89) was dismissed by Bumrah with a delivery that was pitched on length and just kept on climbing as the batter went on a compulsive drive only to edge it behind stumps. Bumrah’s exalted celebration said it all.

Mitchell Marsh (47) was also batting well before Reddy capped a good Test match with a delivery that didn’t give the batter enough room to cut and the inside edge was dragged on to the stumps.

Australia’s most dependable batter in this WTC cycle Alex Carey (30 batting) kept frustrating the visitors but Washington removed Mitchell Starc (12) at stroke of tea to take India closer to a famous win.

In the morning, Siraj bowled a couple of incisive spells to remove the seasoned Usman Khawaja (4) and out-of-form Steven Smith (17). Khawaja’s mistimed pull off Siraj was well taken by IPL’s three million dollar man Rishabh Pant running backwards.

But then India’s new nemesis Head started counter-punching in the presence of Smith, who was trying his best to dig in with desperation to come out of his current rut. However Siraj, who had poor series against New Zealand at home, was all over the Australian batters on a pitch that has ‘misbehaved’ considerably with variable bounce coming into play.

If Khawaja was disposed with a delivery that got big on the southpaw opener, Smith got a delivery that was pitched on perfect length and deviated enough to kiss his outside edge as Pant completed the formalities diving to his right ending a 62-run stand.

Smith and Marnus Labuschagne’s dip in form during this World Test Championship cycle is a major cause of concerns for the hosts. Smith, in fact, did away with his trigger movement towards the off-stump. knowing fully well that he could be a leg before candidate whenever Indian bowlers attack the stumps on a pitch with variable bounce.

Head, who got a beauty from Harshit Rana in the first innings, knew that survival wasn’t an option on a deteriorating track and he didn’t let the loose balls go unpunished as anything pitched up was driven and the short ones were cut disdainfully.

His fifty came with a perfect ramp over the keeper’s head and needed only 63 balls to achieve that feat.

New Delhi: Firming up its India presence as Apple diversifies its vast supply chain and research outside of China, the iPhone maker has set up a new research and development subsidiary in the country.

The research and development facility would reportedly focus on research, design, testing and providing support to third-party manufacturers. The move to establish a R&D facility in India is significant as this will help the tech giant connect better with the local manufacturing ecosystem player, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and create India-specific products and solutions, according to industry players.

Apple currently have R&D facilities in the US, China, Germany and Israel. The company did not immediately comment on its India future plans regarding research and development. According to Prabhu Ram, VP-Industry Research Group, CyberMedia Research (CMR), just as China powered Apple’s growth in the past, India is poised to do the same over the next decade.

“Key to this growth is not just retail and marketing, but also robust R&D operations. By focusing on India-centric R&D, Apple can fuel the next wave of innovation, catering to the aspirations of Indian consumers and beyond,” Ram said. Apple is fast forwarding its manufacturing plans in India and Vietnam. Buoyed by the ease-of-doing business and friendly local manufacturing policies, Apple’s ‘Make in India’ iPhones are breaking all previous export records.

The company is set to open four more own-branded retail stores in India, according to its CEO Tim Cook. “We continue to be excited by the enthusiasm we’re seeing in India, where we set an all-time revenue record. This has been an extraordinary year of innovation at Apple,” said Cook during the quarterly earnings call (Q4 fiscal year 2024).

“We can’t wait to bring four new stores to customers in India. We’re passionate about education and believe technology has a vital role to play in both helping teachers to inspire their students and students to learn about the world around them,” said Cook. The tech giant is on course to surpass the FY24 figures of exports from India, reaching over Rs 50,000 crore (more than $6 billion) in the first six months this fiscal (FY25), according to latest industry data.

The iPhone exports from India surged to cross $10 billion in 2023-24 from $6.27 billion in 2022-23. Overall, the iPhone maker’s India operations reached $23.5 billion in value in the last fiscal (FY24). Apple assembled $14 billion of iPhones in India in last fiscal, exported more than $10 billion worth of devices.
